Rangers Recap: Powerplay Clicks as the Rangers Snap Slump with Win over Penguins
The afternoon began like most contests have for the Rangers during their losing skid, with the Penguins scoring the first two goals of the game in the opening five minutes. What happened next, though, was a little different from what we are used to seeing. The Blueshirts actually turned things around with five unanswered goals, three of which came on the powerplay, to put an end to the dreadful losing streak and grab a needed two points in the standings. I know this may be an obvious thing to say, but I will say it anyway: it's about time.
It only took two minutes for the Penguins to get on the board first when Deryk Engelland's long slapper deflected of the back of Steve Eminger and past Henrik Lundqvist. Like they were in Atlanta on Friday, the Rangers were scrambling defensively on this play, and despite Lundqvist making two to three saves originally, Pittsburgh still was able to find the back of the net. That's when I think most of us assumed the losing streak was going to stretch to seven games.
And if you didn't believe so then, you probably did once Nick Johnson scored on an odd-man rush exactly three minutes later. The Blueshirts lost the faceoff and then allowed Jordan Staal, Dupuis and Johnson all to come storming down the ice without any series challenge. To top it all off, Lundqvist let the fluttering shot go off his glove and into the goal and just like that it was 2-0.
Thankfully Brian Boyle came up with a huge answering goal within the same minute, deflecting a Marc Staal point shot perfectly into the bottom corner of the net. That made it 2-1, but Ryan Callahan's powerplay tip-in at the midway point later tied the game at two. Some credit must go to head coach John Tortorella here for calling a timeout after the Penguins' second goal. He stayed composed on the bench and regrouped his squad. Clearly it worked.
The Rangers picked up where they left off 1:34 into the second period with Brandon Dubinsky perfectly setting up Vinny Prospal for a tap-in at the side of the net. Both Pittsburgh defensemen collapsed to Dubinsky, so heads up play by Prospal to get to the net where he knew he would be left wide open. Also, what a beautiful pass through traffic by Dubinsky. I think it went unnoticed by the MSG Network staff how great that feed actually was.
Ryan Callahan (second goal of the game) and Artem Anisimov followed that up with back-to-back powerplay goals to extend New York's lead to 5-2. That added up to three powerplay goals on the afternoon, which is a season high within one game for the Rangers. Coincidence that all three tallies with the man advantage occurred because of players going to the net? I think not.
Brett Sterling gave the Penguins a miniscule amount of hope by scoring a goal five minutes into the third period to make it a 5-3 game. Shortly after that, Pittsburgh was given a four-minute powerplay, which was an enormous opportunity for them to get back into the game. However, the Rangers shut the door defensively, as did Lundqvist in net, and they came up with the clutch kill to preserve their lead and eventually earn the victory.
Alternate captain Ryan Callahan was named the first star of the game and deservedly so. This was by far Callahan's best effort since returning to the lineup on February 1 (also against the Pens), as he picked up points on three of the five Ranger goals that were scored. Again, the biggest thing here was that he continuously went to the net and/or took advantage of linemates being there. Sometimes it takes a leader to pull a team out of a slump, and that's just what Captain Cally did today. (I consider him to be the primary captain with Drury out)
Speaking of leaders, how about the performance by Marc Staal on defense in this tilt? Marc has no question struggled a bit since returning from All-Star weekend, but he was completely lights out this afternoon. Whether it was against his brother or any other player leading the Penguin rush, he always seemed to be there to make the smart play in order to break it up. That's Marc in a nutshell right there.
Although he only had one assists, I really like Brandon Dubinsky's game as well. He played a real gritty game. Well, I guess he always does but today there was a little extra push/momentum carrying him forward. This isn't the first time we've seen Callahan and Dubinsky both stepping up to the plate at a crucial time for the Rangers.
Before I put a wrap on this, it is also worth mentioning that Wojtek Wolski and Dan Girardi both apparently left the game with injuries. While Girardi's situation was a little mysterious since he was not on the bench for the second half of the third, Wolski was legitimately hurting. He said after the game that he tweaked a rib muscle and hopes to skate on Tuesday.
Well it's finally over, folks. The worst stretch of the entire season has finally come to an end, but the Rangers now need to build on this moving forward. It's one win, great, but they need to make it into three or four in a row here. They are safe in seventh for now, but there are teams quickly creeping up on the in the Eastern Conference standings.

Marc Staal was awesome...
Offensively as well. Set up a 3 on 1 with a nice long pass to Boyle (who then squandered the 3 on 1 by shooting and not passing to MZA).
Wondering...
I wonder how many goals Callahan would have if his hand didn’t break and miss all those games.
all of those games where the rangers would have the pieces to win all came together today…lets hope they use this week to go over what went wrong and improve and what went right and build on it (hint: keep a man in front of the net on the PP, as well as having our D-men take simple point shots…it seems to work)

Slew Foot City
Anyone else notice Orpick’s slew foot of Gaborik on Prospal’s goal?
I only had access to the NHL channel here in Chicago so I had to listen to those two goober Penguin announcers. They have got to be the biggest homers I have ever head. They couldnt figure out “Why Prust is trying to pick a fight with Orpick” the next time they both on the ice after the slew foot. I will not complain about Sam and Joe again.
The Pens must be working on the slew foot in practice. Yet one more reason to be suspect of Mario’s hypocritical rants.
All that aside, after a miserable start the Rangers brought it on for the last 2 1/2 periods.I’ll take the 2 points thank you very much.

Wallace kicked Staal’s foot out while he was making a hard turn, almost made him do a full split (on the play where Wolski got hurt). I rewound on DVR, it was no accident.

The penguins seem to do it more than any other team the Rangers play. I will start watching the Pens when the y play other teams and see if they do it then too. It starts with Crosby and seems to go all the way down the line. Nasty habit- they are goingto seriously hurt someone.

Im here. A nice win for the Rangers. I am very happy for the team. Exactly the kind of game I like. Not a one goal exhausting game that they been playing. You have to remamber do this is a deplated Pittsburgh team
Amazingly enough, it was by far his best-spelled post yet, and somewhat close to a readable level of grammar.

Funny I was saying to myself during the game that if the Rangers win this one, the pen heads will all be crying about how they are missing players. Funny……the Rangers have done what they have this season with 40% of their team missing!!!!!! No whining, just go out and play!!! I guess when your a spoiled and coddled team, you don’t have anything else but excuses when you lose. From their hypocrite owner all the way down the the dregs they call fans, that organization is completely classless!!!

Uh I love the Rangers
But we were never short the kind of talent that the Penguins are missing now. It is no the same degree at all.
The guys we lost were just as important to us as those two are to them! Anyway, the real point is that you heard no excuses from this team.

oh I agree – but the statement wasn’t about importance to the team, it was about talent. This Rangers team has found some level of success, without ever having the talent like those two players on the roster.
Regardless – I went over to Pensburgh to check out some of the comments, and it’s an utter joke. Even during the game thread, it’s just full of statements like, “well this is our AHL team” – they just have nothing useful to say, and complain like effing babies, like they’re the victims of everyone else in the league.
I haven't checked out too many other sites but
it does seem to me that they are a little bit of a whine-fest at times. I like that the Banter is (for the most part) filled with honest assessments backed up with facts/sources rather than just a whoa is us/everyone is against us vibe that really leads to no good conversations.
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
They talk like we’ve never beaten them with Crosby and Malkin!!!!

First post evar for me, rejoice. Haha
Good to see the PP finally come to life. It looked like the success was really the result of simply having someone park their ass in front of the net and having good, low shots from the point. That’s how this team’s gonna have success on the PP without a bomb from the point.

We won a game we should have won
The score shouldnt have been 5-3 though. They have 1 player left who is a legit top 6 guy (Jordan) and then Dupuis who compliments crosby but without Crosby Dupuis is not top 6 material. This win was ours to lose and thank god we didnt.
Positives we faced a strong Pens defensive squad because most of their injuries are on offense meaning that we still scored more goals then I thought we would.
We were in control and had an effective power play by putting a guy in front of the net and getting shots in from the point when the top d guys collapse down. Who would have thought that would work?
Gaborik is starting to look good and Prospal seems to be finding him more which can only be a good thing if he starts to heat up.
Ryan Callahan, Vinny Prospal, and Marc Staal all of our assistant captains stepped up to lead us to this victory. They set an example by putting that puck in the back of the net and shutting down their offense and PP.
The bad
We let in 3 goals on a weak offense. We shouldnt have let in two of those goals it was an entire breakdown and hank let in that second goal which he should have had.
Thank god we won we needed it and we didnt let it slip away like i feared we were going to in the beginning.
Engelland’s shot was going wide by a foot, Eminger had lost his stick, yada yada. Lucky one there.

Lundquist did not look good.
This is a big reason why it was that close. Glad to see karma start to catch up with us. Gaborik looks like he’s lost half his speed. Not good.
past 2 games I thought Gabby was playing very well
and its no coincidence Vinny Prospal’s back skating well too.
Just a matter of time for Gaborik to explode.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Huh?
I agree that Hank looked shaky, but I thought Gaborik looked fantastic. I thought the game in Atlanta was the first game Gaborik really looked like he was was skating well, and that his great performance continued throughout todays game. There was a moment today when Gabby had the puck behind the net, and made a strong push out in front of the net to get a good chance. Thats not the type of play we have come to expect from Gaborik this season, but it shows a return to form.
Someone mentioned that that return of Prospal has a lot to do with it, but I’m not so sure. Gaborik just seems to be skating like a man whose hungry to score, and he really hasnt done that for some time. He seems to finally understand that his fate is in his own hands, and not in those of whatever linemates torterella wants to pair him with for the night. Of course, it doesnt hurt to have Prospal as one of those men, but it has more to do with the effort being put forth by Gaborik. Maybe Prospal gives Gabby a boost with his energy and enthusiasm for the game. Whatever it is, I hope it continues…

Well, it’s a win. It should have been 5-0 with the compliment of players the Penguins put on the ice.
Henrik continues to look shaky at times. Ever since the all-star break he just hasn’t looked comfortable. Lot of scrambling around and not being in position, which is the antithesis of his game. The D wasn’t perfect, but when he gets scrambling around like that, he usually gets a few games off to work with Benoit Allaire.
Nice to see the PP do some good things. The Penguins forwards were very passive on our D tonight (even on the EV Boyle deflection goal) and we duly took advantage of it. They still haven’t shown they can score on the PP against teams with forwards who pressure up high, but it’s a start.
Biggest thing about this game, really, is the next game, and seeing if the kids can build on a win, however ugly it may be. It’s about finding ways to win games, whether it’s playing a healthy team or their AHL team.

Good win for the Rangers
I had to stop watching. Does anyone know why Eminger only had 4:08 of ice time? What he just benched?
He was pretty much at fault for that first goal
He lost his stick in a battle then tried to block a shot but turned his body towards the net letting it deflect in. When the shot was originally going wide. He might be rusty since he hasnt played in a while but we atleast won when MDZ wasnt on the ice is he a curse like Bieber?
he's not a curse
but mdz’s minutes come at the expense of guys who are better defenders right now. eminger is truly at the back of the pecking order, so he tends to yield higher leverage situations to his better teammates
Del Zotto is a good kid
Yeah he commits his share of mistakes, but then again who doesn’t?
by The Last Shall Become First on Feb 13, 2011 8:13 PM EST up reply actions
I’ve been asking, haven’t seen an answer. He was pretty obviously benched, his last shift came with 12 minutes left in the 2nd period. I’m not sure why though. As pballer says, Eminger was at fault for the 1st goal, which happened 2 minutes in. You’d think if you were going to bench the guy, he’d have just done it then.
I’ll go back and watch his last shift at some point and see if I can figure out why, for now it’s a mystery.

This was a must have win. Glad to see the PP coming to life. Our PP stats have been acceptable since the gang came back from the walking wounded list. Not sure why Torts punished Eminger and held him off the ice, but he was clearly at fault on the first goal, and embarassingly so. Guy needs to bust the rust off though and he should have been on the ice. Everybody but Gabby skated well. Staal was fantastic. Big win. I’ll give Torts another week of clemency before I start calling for his head again;-)

Gaborik
Gaborik needs to score. for over 7 mill, if he can’t score he needs to go. i see no other reason for him to be on this team other than his scoring ability. if he’s hurt then sit him out as long as it takes. atleast drury can win faceoffs, kill penalties and grind. hate to say it but for the money we could spend elsewhere, get rid of him before the rest of league realizes he’s overpaid.

Really?
You would rather have Drury in the lineup than Gaborik, in the over $7m category? 4 pts over 36? For what it’s worth, even though Gabs has scored in only a few games, the blowouts were blowouts because of him, and his goals are responsible for a handful of our wins this year, without which we’d already be on the outside of the playoffs looking in. Don’t tell me that Drury has saved some games for us with his penalty kill and faceoffs because both were just as good/bad when he was out.
what its worth
i dont want drury over anyone. that being said this team is gritty and plays a physical game. i cant tell you how many times i see gaborik thrown to his ass when he’s behind the net because he is a feather. or how many times ive see him whiff on one-timers and other shots a 7.5 million dollar player who is primarily on the team in snipe should drain. and for what its worth his playoff stats are 3 goals, 2 assist in 11 games so he hasnt exactly been known for being clutch in the post-season.

All the complaints you all have about Gaborik sound very familiar. Sound similar to the Caps’ fans criticisms of Alex Semin except that he at least can kill penalties. He was off to a great start but played injured throughout December and got an injury in January that essentially shut him down for a month. He just got back and has still not regained his effectiveness.

He just has to find the net to get some confidence, The stats say he had 4 shots on goal today but he had some in the 2nd and 3rd that missed the net or were tipped or blocked by the pens, he needs to at least hit the net especially on the shots where he is wide open
GG!!!!
I thought it was over after the first 2 pburgh goals,i was already thinking,Hanks getting pulled and at best it ends 2-0. It was great watching em charge back and being wrong.
Those pburgh announcers took biased unproffesional game calling to new levels!!! the absolute worst, they get called for a clear penalty and one of em keeps going on and on about not seeing it. They must of put up the Injured List graphic about 500 times!!, I think they put that up at least the 5 times we scored and then 495 more times when pburgh made mistakes.

As JM82 above said, I was initially worried when the Rangers were down 2-0 at the beginning of the game but they got the two goals back before the end of the first period. And 3 unanswered goals in 2nd period after that! A victory could have not come against a more deserving team. (I must admit I dislike the Penguins intensely.)
Relieved to see power play goals, which is something I almost never see my hometown team ever do.
Very nice game by the Rangers.

we can be friends I HATE the pens and I dont mind the Caps much either lol

Finally!
We get a good power play and win the game! I feel like I deserve a Medal of Honor, though not the only one, for watching NHL Network and getting stuck with the Pittsburgh clowns for two and a half hours. Nothing more professional than saying shit like “Lundqvist was looking for his crown flopping around on the first goal” and complaining about every Penguin who falls, looking for a penalty, and wondering why they didn’t get one. My favorite part was seeing “The Flower” wilt during the 2nd period and hearing how Lundqvist was struggling and no mention of how they had some goalie problems. Besides the injuries, Pittsburgh has some obvious issues right now in net and have only 1 win on the road since Cyndy’s injury as well if I heard correctly today.
"...AAAAnd In Goooalll, Numbah Thirteee, Hhennnrikk LUNDqvisst!!!"
Living in the Pacific Northwest, but rocking my Rangers jersey every game.
It wasn’t pretty against a depleted Pens team but who cares? A win is a win. Dubi, other than the 4 minute penalties, was great. Didn’t show in the score sheet but he did all the work on Cally’s 2nd goal and got nothing (pts) out of it. He played great though.
Dubi and Boyle camping in front of the net on the two PP units. Very nice.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

Two stuffed Penguins at the game?
Did I really see two morons dressed as Penguins mascots?
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

Avery
I have to give credit to Avery. He was all over the place and has become quite the playmaker. I think he often goes unnoticed when he’s not being a pest, but his play has really shined recently and I think yesterday’s game was one of his best yet.
When he gets the puck behind the net, I can’t help but think something will happen. Gretzkyesque, one could say…
He seems to be getting better with age
He has picked up that portion of his game definitely. I am starting to get comfortable with knowing he is on the ice to do more then just cause ruckus.
+1

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
His work along the boards reminds me of tikannen or jan erixon
i wish more people in hockey would notice that then the image they all hate him for.
Calmer than you are.
Antics wise, he is very similar to Tikkanen. I do miss that crazy finn
Rangers FTW!

Pittsbourgh Announcers
I also had to watch the game on NHL network and got to listen to the two clowns from FSN Pittbourgh. Man, talking about awful! One of them kept complaining about Cris Letang going for 2 min. and not Avery for about 20 times. Also, I have missed the third Rangers goal like by 30 seconds and of course, the was no replay! Also, at the beginng of the game there was only one, Pinguins’ starting lineup, as if they were playing by themselves!
I was pissed when Gaborik missed the empty net
I would’ve just love to see him score again, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Somewhat fitting
I agree but when he missed, my first thought was " that sums up his season right there!"
AA
One guy who seemed to have a real good game under the radar was Artem Anisimov. Not only did he score PP goal, he had much more productive jump in his legs, made some very effective hits, and killed penalties very well. Lately, he’d been trying too much to beat guys 1 on 1, often w/ a futile spin-a-rama that never clicked. He tried that once this game, but outside of that, played a very solid game. Good for him and us!
Hoping for a big trade!!
Would love a big trade with LA.
We have what they need(Gaborik) to be a contender now,
Im not a expert like a few other readers here ; ) so bare with me on this one..
The trade: Gaborik, Prospal, Avery ,Grachev and Del Zotto
for: Brown, Williams, Stoll, Shenn and J.Johnson
Dubinsky – Stepan – Brown
Wolski – Anisimov – Callahan
Zucarello – Stoll – Williams
Fedotenko – Boyle – Prust
Staal – Girardi
Johnson – Sauer
McDonagh – Gilroy
Im hoping for Drury to retire because of a bad knee.
Avery is my favorite player but torts dont want him : (
I know its not gonna happen but i wish
A trade
Rangers send Gabby, MDZ and Eminger to Minnesota for Havlat, Cam Baker and #1 draft chois this year.We get a scorer back plus a good deffansman to stabelize our defance. To top it we get a high draft chois for the future. What do you think ?
Callahan
.
Dude was a beast Sunday. Just wanted to drop by and give your boys their due. Rangers played tough after a shaky start. The fans at MSG were pretty solid as well. Worst treatment we got was getting booed in the hallway by a bunch of little kids.
.
.
Looking forward to our next meeting March 20.

Thanks. I use a Sony DSC-H20. It’s small, has good zoom and great image stabilization in case, like me, you don’t have the steadiest of hands while watching the game.
