Flyers Add Versteeg
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into Philadelphia.....
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 5-10,190-pound right wing Kris Versteeg from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a first-round and a third-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.
Read the full release:
All Philly had to give up for a guy who helped Chicago to the Cup last year was a 1st and 3rd round pick? Wow.
Give Holmgren credit - this will make the Flyers an even tougher out in the playoffs this year, if they stay healthy and get reasonable goaltending.
This move makes it all the more interesting to see what Glen Sather will do - not that Versteeg would have been a fit with the Rangers - but the forward depth that Philly has is pretty remarkable.

1st and a 3rd…about the same thing for Fisher.
20 goal, 40 point guy, 3rd full season, can kill penalties and has some decent speed.
That’s actually a steal in my opinion. Figure the Flyers are going to be in the top 5 teams, so it’ll be a lower 1st-round pick.
As you said, depth is insane. Richards, Carter, Briere, Giroux, Leino, Hartnell, Versteeg, Betts, Riems, Zherdev (at times). At this point, unless their goaltending goes into a complete nose-dive, you’d have to think they’re a lock to represent the east for the cup again. Nobody else is remotely close, unless the Bruins do something dramatic with Toronto’s 1st-rounder (which should be top 5).

bob is a fraud and boucher is hot and cold still no goaltending untill they get some its 1975 forever ..

(Just gonna repost what I wrote in Hobbit's fanshot)
Well I am not sure they did not overpay, but there is something to say for having been there before which Versteeg certainly has. Plus if they wanted to they could throw this line up out there:
Zherdev/Richards/Versteeg
Hartnell/Briere/Leino
JVR/Carter/Giroux
Pronger-Carle
Timmonen-Coburn
Mezsaros-O’Donnell
Bobrovsky/Boucher
That is incredibly scary.
deff not a good sign
this def is not a good sign for us. I mean were not a cup contending team but holy shit do you not wanna play Philly in the playoffs. As much as i hate them with all my passion , there way to skilled up front to lose to any of the eastern conference teams unless Washington picks up their play dramatically and fixes their goalie situation as well. 2 good fowards gone for draft picks in the past 2 weeks , makes me wonder what we can grab for cheap as well , to help solidify a strong playoff push !
Its Just Pain !!!!!!! Black and Blue Baby!!!
We would have to finish 8th most likely to play them, I don’t see us finishing 8th because if we are playing poor enough to finish there I think it is far more likely that we would drop out of the playoffs altogether.
yea our perfect playoff position is 6th honestly
if we can grab the 6th seed and play either boston or Montreal ill take that any day over playing philly or tampa bay . And i wanna point something out its like a trend that the really strong offensive teams have goalie issues look at philly , washington, tampa bay, all strong teams with serious number 1 goalie concerns !

could relate to...
those teams can spend money elsewhere rather than have a 6.5 million dollar goalie like us.

I’d say goal tending is the least of Washington’s worries at this point. While they haven’t determined which kid (Varlamov, Neuvirth) is the #1 goalie, neither have done a bad job. The problem with Washington at the moment is offense — or lack of it. They’ve averaged less than 2 goals a game since about December and are on pace to tie their team record for getting shut out. The kids are good enough to backstop a team with “normal” offense but not a team with the substandard offense that they’ve shown, as of late.
Will the Rangers get 6th place or might they even do better? The Pens are in 4th at the moment. Will they hang on despite the injuries to key players? Until this weekend, it seemed that Fleury in goal was singlehandedly keeping them afloat with great games.

That was literally over ten years ago, he’s 38, he doesn’t play defense and he cannot get by on his raw skills anymore. I am all for 1994 nostalgia but wanting Kovalev NOW is idiotic.
Nowhere in my signature
Does it say to go out and aqquire Kovalev. I have every right to have “In Kovalev We Trust” as my signature. I’m not bothering anyone, it’s simply a sign of loyalty to my favorite New York Ranger.

Come on, you wouldn't like to see him in Ranger Blue one more time?
Look at what happened to the Avalanche when a clearly past his prime Peter Forsberg returned. They didn’t say “What is this 37-year old has been doing”, they welcomed him with open arms. Same thing whem Michael Jordan came back to the NBA and Mario came back to the NHL. Kovalev may no longer be the All-Star he was a few season ago, but think of all the nostalgia that will be brought back.

Don't forget
1 Calder, art ross, hart memorial, 4 gold medals and 2 Stanley Cups…yeah Forsberg can’t compare at all. He was probabily the best two way forward before Pavel Datsuyk came into the league

For real
Toronto is going nowhere fast. I thought they’d be fairly decent this year, with a stacked defense, Versteeg going via trade, and Gustavsson on the rise. But their goaltending blows— Giguere and Gustavsson only faced about 20 shots a night and would let in 3 or 4; and Kessel has underachieved the entire season.
Now Versteeg has the opportunity to play for another Cup contender. Good times for him.
I’d love him on the Rangers.
I still like our chances
Philly has had some great teams in the past and we’ve always given them a run for their money. If we do meet them in the playoff, we will be ready and we will win.

Awesome and here the Rangers sit with a lack luster offense about ready to fall out of the playoffs with the way their playing. In case I don’t want to throw up enough when I hear about Philly, now I have to possibly see them in the Cup again? Great Grand FANTASTIC!!
neither would i

Well said.
“Roh Roy!!” ;-)
If you look at their roster, they have so much depth that they can actually still be in the market – trading NHL level forwards with picks/AHL prospects – possibly for a veteran keeper. (Trying to think like Holmgren here and a run for the Cup)
And I despise the Flyers probably moreso than the Crylanders……
Though I despise them too, there is no denying that they really have something great going on in Philly and are in a great position to take the East, especially with the injuries that the Penguins have suffered.
I wouldn’t be shocked if they tried to add another goaltender, how much faith do they want to put in Boucher and their rookie Bobrovsky? Only glaring weakness on their entire team.

Versteeg has back issues doesn't he?
I know he missed time early in the season and Maple Leaf fans weren’t happy with his production, not sure if that turned around in the last few months. A 1st and 3rd is too much for a team like the Rangers to give up, not too much for a team like the Flyers who are probably going to the finals. Living in South NJ, I watch a ton of Flyers games. While they have tremendous offensive talent, you’d be surprised how often they run cold with the goal scoring, then put of a series of 5 spots. Could catch up to them in the playoffs considering the goaltending situation.

Good for the Flyers
They are going for it this year (and will come up agonizingly short as they always do) …
But they still have only a collection of sieves they can put between the pipes.
And with 17 players under contract for next year and only $1.7M in cap space they might have some problems keeping this lineup intact and still won’t be able to add an NHL caliber goal keeper.
It’s not all doom and gloom Rangers fans!
Can’t wait to watch that firesale lol I guess that’s the new style

Bobrovsky has not even played a full season in the NHL…..the jury is out on him in the playoffs. Other “perfectly fine” goalies offered up by the Flyers in the last 20 years have included regular-season warriors like Roman Cechmanek, whose five-hole widened considerably in the playoffs; Garth Snow, Ron Hextall, Ray Emery, Robert Esche, Antero Nittymaki, Brian Boucher, and Michael Leighton…..
I think it’s fair to say that goaltender is once again the Flyers’ biggest question mark and potential weakness; it’s far more likely that they will lose due to shoddy netminding than having either their forwards or defense underperform.
Prole art threat.

didn't use that word, merely implied Flyer goaltending is mediocre
They are not perfectly fine NHL players either. Bobrovsky is unproven, and Boucher is not that good.
Prole art threat.
by greifi griffie on Feb 15, 2011 5:51 PM EST up reply actions
We’ll see. They have been fine in the regular season, I doubt they’ll be as good in the playoffs. Rookies and career journeyman goalies tend to falter in the postseason.
Do they?
Or is just that bad goalies tend to falter in the postseason and good goalies tend to win while goalies who are just ‘average’ are a coin flip?
Flyer goalies are not good, generally speaking
And they’ve been a long-term problem for the Flyers since Bernie Parent. Yet they still try to win year after year without a good goalie, bless their filthy goonish hearts for that.
Prole art threat.

Are you saying that since the Flyers have had problematic goalies in the past, they must have problematic goalies now? Isn’t that a lot like saying the Rangers have had defensive problems in the past so they must have defensive problems now?
Crap, wrong button….my reply is below and out-of-sequence…..

by greifi griffie on Feb 15, 2011 5:50 PM EST up reply actions
I’m saying they have a stubborn front office that doesn’t believe goaltending makes that much of a difference in how their team finishes every year. Let’s put it this way: if you’ve got Roloson, Lundqvist, Neuvirth/Varlamov, Fleury, Thomas, Price, and Ward along with Bobrovsky/Boucher as the East’s playoff netminders, who would you say has the advantage?
I would rank the Flyers’ tandem 8th in the conference against those other goalies….curious to see how and why you would differ if you do.
Prole art threat.
I would say
That beyond the top 6 goalies or so in the league, there’s a lot of parity. And yes I would rank the Flyers tandem behind the starters of most of the playoff contenders; but the drop off is not that great after the first few elite goalies
