Rangers Recap: Devils Shutout Rangers 1-0, Chico's Heart Filled With Glee

NEWARK NJ - FEBRUARY 18: Goalie Henrik Lundqvist #30 of the New York Rangers makes a save during the second period of an NHL hockey game against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center on February 18 2011 in Newark New Jersey. Devils won 1-0. (Photo by Paul Bereswill/Getty Images)

Sorry for the short recap, but let's face it, not much to say in a 1-0 game, and I'm in the middle of moving this weekend, so I had to catch the game on the DVR.

The Devils got a goal from Ilya Kovalchuk in the second period, and Johan Hedberg made it stand up as the Devils defeated the Rangers 1-0 at the Prudential Center in Newark tonight. Kovalchuk's goal came after a miscue by Marc Staal.

Rangers made life pretty easy for Hedberg, mustering just fifteen shots on goal, and none on a power play in the third with Kovalchuk in the box for high sticking Wojtek Wolski.

The only thing I hate more than losing to the Devils is having to suffer through it on the Devils feed. Chico Resch is hands down the worst announcer in hockey, and quite frankly I'm not sure how someone who seems to see so little of what goes on on the ice still have a job. When Kovalchuk high-sticked Wolski in the face, Chico said "Well I guess you could call it high-sticking if you have to." I literally almost put a hole in my wall. He is a clueless homer.

Not much else I can say, have at it in the comments.

For more on the game, check out the Rangers vs Devils recap from TSN

Sucks about having to listen to Chico

Today was a rare simulcast with one MSG carrying each set of announcers. It didn’t have to be…

In a similar vein, I wish we could have just declined the HD broadcast and saved it for a rainy day. I’d gladly watch a few games on mute in exchange for never needing the relegation channels.

I’ve been telling you guys about Resch for a while. He’s an abomination to broadcasters everywhere!!! Every goal the Rangers score is a lucky goal!! Every goaLthe devils score is the highlight of the century!!!

Whole team was flat. Zuke was one of the only forwards with any spark to his game. Even Avery seemed invisible.

Gaborik must be happy he got that fluke goal against the Kings. Now he can spend the next 8-10 games working on his triple toe-loop instead of actually trying to do anything.

Just lifeless.

worst game of the year!!! lousy flat.. looked liked they got smashed last night???

i guess that happens when you have a bunch of youngins together..

if we dont et on a streak here soon. we will miss the playoffs to atlanta or buffalo.. sad but true.. all rebuilding teams below us except atlanta would be a shame for us not to make the playoffs and for our young players to take it to the next level.

gabroik just glides all day.. no shots on goal..

most of his goals against lowsy teams and 3 ghoal games this year… where has he been when it comes to passion and clutch and goal scoring in big moments and down the stretch when i t counts nowehere.. exactlly my point i dont know if he fits on this club with his style of fancy dancing and he still cant even get open and produce and score for us!!! you see why i like kovalchuk. explosive… hard working gabroik? what does he do? waits to be a star and feed him the puck .. kovy goes for it..

i found what the rangers are lacking and thats star power and expllosive players with skill and all around game… every team has that and us???? still searching..

Kovy's burst

on that goal is a clinic for Gaborik. Oh yea, he sucks on breakaways. How long has it been since he’s made you go, wow with his speed? Whatever happened to Gabby’s famous burst through the mid-zone? Its gone and we’ve seen enough to know that it is, in fact, history. Sad thing is, so has every other GM in the league. Whenever we go up against a team with a true star the contrast with Gabby is embarassing. I’m no fan of Kovi and no way would I want to pay that price for any player, but his effort puts Gabby to shame.

But, then again, I’m one of those guys who was criticizing his play the second half of last year. His numbers are deceptive.

by voice22 on Feb 19, 2011 2:31 AM EST up reply actions

salary cap hit
I’m no fan of Kovi and no way would I want to pay that price for any player, but his effort puts Gabby to shame.

The fact, though, is that the Rangers have a larger cap hit for three players this season than the Devils do for Kovalchuk.

  • Marion Gaborik – $7.5 million
  • Chris Drury – $7.05 million
  • Henrik Lundqvist – $6.88 million

Scott Gomez’ average annual salary cap hit was $7.36 million.

As a side note, Wade Redden’s average annual salary cap hit was $6.5 million. That albatross was waived in the 2010 preseason so the Rangers could get under the salary cap.

Other than Redden, all four of the salary cap hits mentioned above are in the top 20 salary cap hits in the league. At number 25 this year is Ilya Kovalchuk – $6.6 million.

But, that’s not your fault. It’s Glen Sather and James Dolan’s fault.

by Alan Wright on Feb 19, 2011 8:06 AM EST up reply actions

My mistake: $6.67 million

by Alan Wright on Feb 19, 2011 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

it’s way more than just cap hit – it’s actually salary, years, trade assets, and draft picks that all went into getting that one-dimensional player and making him happy.

by j-red on Feb 19, 2011 9:34 AM EST up reply actions

not that I’m condoning those awful contracts given out by Sather, but the Kovy signing was a gong show.

by j-red on Feb 19, 2011 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

That’s a fair point about Kovy’s more selfish, offensive-minded character, especially at the time of the trade.

However, I am seeing under Lemaire a much more balanced, two-way team player. Kovy and Lemaire have say this in interviews and I think the truth is out there on the ice as well.

But anyway, I was responding to Voice22 about salaries. It’s true the Devs gave up other concessions, but that’s natural for the premier players. Since the Devs generally haven’t gotten the #1 draft pick and usually don’t throw money around like Sather/Dolan, a pick-up like Kovy is quite rare.

Even when Mario Lemieux was drafted, the Pens threw away the rest of their season to get him. Devs didn’t. This year, they could have sandbagged the team after the Maclean debacle, but they didn’t.

If the Rangers want to sign player like they’re the Yankees, then they just don’t understand the team game or the salary cap.

But hey, the stadium sells out and the merchandise sales are great. This should be no surprise in the biggest city in the US, where the team has four generations of fans, and it’s primary geographic rivals- the Devils and Islanders – are competing for a discernably smaller niche market.

But hey, the Rangers sign big name players and fill the seats. That’s more important than anything else.

What a shame. What you guys really need are new owners who have a clue and give a shit, so your gritty team can actually show it’s heart.

you mean like the heart your team showed to start the season? come on dude give it up. we understand dolan sucks. so does newark.

Kovy’s contract was settled months ago through the league, even though similar contracts elsewhere were unproblematic. In truth, Lou Lamoriello did all the owners a favor. It’s said that he ordinarily hates those long, protracted contracts.

As to the Rangers’ contracts… yes, I bet people on this site are aware and do care. But even with a blog and many readers, you have no voice. Sather/ Dolan have done you wrong. Shameful.

gabroik should dealt like the leafs did for two first round picks in a better draft year like next? or good young prospects… we need to keep the youth but need an explosive player who can change the game and really create energy..

Ouch...

Yes, this was definitely a difficult game to DVR then watch, although I didn’t think it was necessarily boring. Hank had to make some tough saves and there was some decent hitting. It was more frustrating than anything else. One, because the friggin’ Devils somehow snapped out of their 1st half funk and now look like they usually look. Two, a Jaques Lemaire trapping team was tough enough to play against w/o a scarily-dominant Kovalchuk but the combo is why they are inexplicably being mentioned in the play-off hunt. And, third, tonight was without Brodeur in net, which is even more frightening.

As far as we’re concerned, I think plain and simple, we looked and really were just plain tired after last night’s game. The fact that we somehow had managed to go 8 – 0 in the second game of back-to-backs to start the season is even more incredible when you watch the past two games. We’re now only 8 – 4 which means we’ve lost the last four under that scenario. As much as I love the “grit” of this team, it’s definitely taking it’s toll in the 2nd half, and I think that stat demonstrates it. Plus, the fact that Staal had to play two consecutive almost-30 minute games didn’t help. Man, he looked tired, and not just on the Kovalchuk play. He fell earlier in the game, too and was sometimes uncharacteristically slow to get back in the play or even on the wrong side of the ice, at times.

Hopefully a day off will help b4 Sunday…no Chico, but no Sam/Joe/Brian either…bummer!

Is Torts going to have to go on some insane tirade

To get Gaborik to score in clutch situations? Is he going to have to yell at him as loud as he can on the bench? Is he going to physically confront him in the locker room? Is he going to have to unleash Derek Boogard on him?

Random stats - this year vs. last year

We have now played 60 games, and have 66 points.
Last year after 60 games, we had 59 points.

Last year, our record was 10 wins, 14 losses against divisional rivals.
This year, so far, it is 9 wins and 8 losses.

So – small steps, but in the right direction.

I have had to deal with being a SF Giants fan and an Oakland Raiders fan. They both sucked for pretty much the entire second half of my life. They finally started rebuilding in 2008 after years of being a disgrace. In two years the Giants won the world series and the Raiders went 8-8 and won every game against their division rivals.

by poopydoodie11 on Feb 19, 2011 4:00 AM EST reply actions

Don't Blame Chico . . . . . . . . .

If you were an islanders announcer and then got “promoted” to the devils you’d be just like Chico. He’s just happy to be in the “big” leagues.

Conversely, look at howie rose of “matteau matteau matteau” fame – he’s practically ready to call it a career in because the Islanders are soooo painful to watch. In fact, he’s been criticized for being too critical of the Ises on air.

Other than that, all I can say is the trap is back and we didn’t move the puck very well. It was SUPER FRUSTRATING to watch the Rangers passing – it seems they almost never got it tape to tape. Although, gilroy looked excellent carrying the puck out of the D zone. He really highlighted his ability to break the first forechecker and MDZ looked a bit more like his last season self at times.

As as far as Gaborik is concerned, I think the real problem is he’s an open ice player and the Rangers are seeing very little open ice this year. Dump and chase is not a style that plays to Gaborik’s strengths as a hockey player. On top of that, the Rangers D are not closing the gap effectively when the opposition is trying to gain the blue line which limits the number of odd man rushes the Rangers get; as does the collapse defense which leaves the points WIDE open and the lack of pressure there is helping the opponents trap the blueshirts in their own zone too often.

Final analysis – our defensive scheme is killing our transition game and that is killing our effectiveness and especially hurts gabby’s ability to affect the outcome of games.

by The_TIKKanen on Feb 19, 2011 4:14 AM EST reply actions

good thoughts. i agree that our playing style hurts gabs, but it helps many other plays on our team (dubi, cally, boyle, prust etc) so its a trade-off.

The only two names I heard all night

Was Zuke n Sauer and that’s not saying much. Even precious dub. N calli. MIA. That was by far the most depressing game ever. I have been complaining about the devils creeping up for a while now and everyone has reassured me they will never make it up to the playoffs but that cheap gutless Bitch trap system they play is just sending them up the latter quicker then ever. The only thing that would of made last night worse is Marty getting that shut out. Boyle and prust MIA the last few games. Mcd. Had some quick moves I like that he Rly stands out now only if he has decent awake forwards to pass to . And why in gods name were they using there normal strategy to pass several yards to the next player when clearly that doesn’t work with teams that don’t play that system . A bunch of del zottos passing from Lundquist to the opposing corner…..this game was so rough I needed tums and baby wipes after …Sunday is going to be worse let’s hope they prove us wrong …wake up ur players torts its time.

Devils fan here. I always try to read the opposing point of view of every game, and the consistent theme I read when the Devils win is that it’s because of the trap.

Of course it is smart to use it when you win, it’s very smart hockey. It is not very exciting however and it is absolutely frustrating to the opposition (which is a good thing, to frustrate them and get them off their game). I think you always read ‘the Devils win because of the %#$!ing trap’ because it is very frustrating to only get something like 15 shots on net and hardly get the puck in deep.

At least Henrik is back in form.

Looked sharp throughout, a couple great saves to keep them in it. They looked like a tired team last night, chasing the Devils all night long with virtually no sustained forecheck or cycle. AA has been more noticeable lately, that’s a good thing. They need to step it up tomorrow, need at least 1 point.

gotta agree

with the fact that the team looked bad – really tired actually…
and you cant play those 150 foot passes too a lone mann standing still on the offensive blueline, the devils were waiting for the pass everytime and won close too all the battles along the boards.. gotta say though – avery had a few really good shifts, but he was all alone out there when it happened – saw torts tried too put avery with gabby too wake him up, but still nothing happened..

i just gotta say with gabbys salary he`s got too put up some numbers and be a key player for us – right now he looks like he belongs in the AHL – IMO…

Can we get Marc Staal some rest?

Maybe break Staal and Girardi up so that they aren’t playing 30+ minutes a game. On the Kovi goal, Staal’s legs seem to go out from under him and it wasn’t the first time last night. The whole team looked to be a gear behind all night and 3 more games in 5 nights doesn’t help

The knock on Girardi is that he is to slow. That is why he went undrafted. Nothing has changed. The Rangers fans just think to heighly of him. He simpply is not that good.

by big ale on Feb 19, 2011 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

Girardi was undrafted because he was injured for two straight seasons during his draft years. When Rangers scouts went to the Guelph CHL team to watch Callahan play and they were blown away by Girardi.

Anyone who says Girardi “simply isn’t that good” hasn’t been watching the games, or is blind to the fact that he is the only player on the roster other than staal equipped to play on the first defensive pair.

Sure he makes defensive mistakes, just like every other dman who isn’t Lidstrom, but “not that good”? Wow, thats just plain stupid.

but if Staal stops that puck on the line Kovi is breaking down the ice…but as their top d pair they do need to rest because they looked tired and slow last night

If it makes anyone feel better

Back in the mid 80s, my father got a ticket package to the devils for the family to enjoy some hockey closer to home. Out of the 12 games we attended the devils didn’t win any. Not a one.
Chico Resch was the net minder in most games and we sat behind him twice a game. Well i know he heard me and my sister loud and clear after every goal he surrendered when we chanted: WAY TO GO CHICO, WAY TO GO!

Calmer than you are.

I'm hoping ...

That this game will be a learning experience for our young team. Sure the Devils played a trap in the neutral zone, but they also collapsed their weak side D in their own zone. This should open up the weak side point man to walk in every time. I’ve heard Torts doesn’t use much tape for training, but this one should be a must. NY didn’t move the puck quick enough in the offensive zone to taker advantage, but it’s something they need to learn. Remeber the days of Rozi and Redden; they used to do the same thing and we got burned numerous times by the cross ice pass in our zone. Hopefully our coaching staff doesn’t chalk this up as a tired team on the second night of back to back, but instead breaks it down for the next time we play these guys.

by bleed'n blue on Feb 19, 2011 11:02 AM EST reply actions

From the opening faceoff, it was obvious the Devils wanted this game more, and they played like it. Torts said it best – we were a step slower than them all night long.
Fact: our "star" player (purportedly Gaborik) was no factor whatsoever; their offensive star (Kovalchuk) was dominant.
16 total shots on goal aint gonna cut it.
Nice to see a strong effort from Hank; unacceptable that he has to be PERFECT for them to have any chance at winning.

12 days ago I predicted New Jersey would end up finishing LESS than 5 pts out of a playoff spot, despite starting the year a miserable 10-29-2. Now I’m getting a sick feeling they may actually sneak into the playoffs.

Devils- Last 17 games: 14-1-2
Rangers- Last 17 games: 6-10-1

I don’t like where this is going…and I don’t particularly like our chances on Sunday either.

by AZRangerFan on Feb 19, 2011 11:05 AM EST reply actions

Shitty game. Our guys looked deflated out there. I actually think Michaletti hit the nail on the head when he said Marc Staal and Girardi looked worn out. In the second half of the season its going to be impossible to keep up their level of play when they are playing 30 minutes 2 nights in a row.

The Devs were on us all night. They gave Ranger Defenseman no room in the D zone, and our neutral zone play was pathetic, more so than usual. We couldn’t keep the puck in the zone, and didn’t get any good scoring chances because of it.

Side note: Christian Thomas nets his 44th of the year last night, and Kreider gets 2 goals against northeastern. Hagelin got an assist. All three play again tonight.

Bright side?

We lost to the hottest team in the league over the last 20 games by 1 goal. Lemaire is unbelievable – this is the same team that was the worst in the league in the first half. I hate to say it but I see game 82 this year as a playoff game against them – winner will be in, loser will go home.

Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!

Torts in a coaching slump?

The Rangers have not been good in first periods for the last 5-7 games—I think a coach should notice that sort of pattern. Games like last night make me wonder if Torts ever pays attention to the Rangers opponents. Lemaire is the king of the trap, yet the Rangers looked surprised to face it, and had little ability to circumvent it.

Lastly, Torts needs to play his third pair at least as much as he did last night. Benching Eminger 2 games ago along with the decrease in Gilroy and DZ’s minutes has resulted in him overplaying Staal and Girardi. Torts has done a much better job overall this year with this team, but he appears to be running in circles a bit right now. Here’s hoping he gets picked up by the players a little bit.

Prole art threat.

Interesting Point
Games like last night make me wonder if Torts ever pays attention to the Rangers opponents.

Well, if you believe what he says in postgame press conferences, then the answer is a resounding NO – he doesn’t pay attention to the Rangers’ opponents, as he’s stated on numerous occasions.
Remember, he’s an arrogant son of a bitch. His “system,” if executed properly, should be successful against ANY opponent. No need to ever adjust the game plan based on who they’re playing. He’ll just “go with his gut” during the course of the game, juggling lines every 5 minutes or so if things aren’t going well.

I have been saying this. He thinks that “one size fits all” works but IMO it dose not. You have to know youre players and know what they do well and what they dont and coach them acordenly Olso you have to know youre opponens and their style and adjust acordenly. If not youre Defensiv style is going to get you alot of one gole games and mostly loses.

After almost 50 years of watching Ranger’s hockey on the tube and having been forced to listen to some of the clowns doing the games for the other teams when the games aren’t a New York feed, I was forced, after about 15 minutes of the first quarter, to mute the sound and watch the remainder of the game without sound. These two morons that the Devils have as announcers must be the worst announcers EVER, ALL-TIME, to do any game!!!
I used to think that Jeff Rimer and Dennis Potvin were the worst, but Cangelosi and Resch make them look like Pulitzer prize winners! They must have to pay the Devils to let them do the broadcasts.

Chico Resche...

… is more important than the fact the Rangers played a totally lifeless game.

How many times has Chico been mentioned so far on this blog? 12? 15? That’s much more important than shots on goal, offensive possession, or blocked shots.

by Alan Wright on Feb 19, 2011 3:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions

The Rangers were lifeless and were utterly stymied by the Devils last night. It is silly to complain about Chico to this extent, but you have to understand how frustrating it is for a lot of people to have to swallow this loss in addition to having to hear Chico’s voice. He is a homer, not a god-awful one, but there is little doubt that he is one.

So Rangers fans will be frustrated by the loss and go after Chico Resche, not saying it makes sense, but you have to understand how it is all connected. For those guys who had to listen or watch the Devils broadcast last night this was like sleeping all day Christmas Day, running down the stairs on the 26th, and opening up the biggest present only to find a dead puppy in there. That may be a bit extreme, but so are emotions at times, especially after a gutting loss like last night.

I think Chico’s still got a while to catch Errey.

I think John did a fine job with his recap if you want to read about how dominant your team was last night, even if Henrik wouldn’t allow him to write things like “you got stomped” like a random fan boy would write.

Jim had the recap last night, he’s in the middle of a move, and didn’t have time to write a dissertation on how lousy we were/great you were. You’ll get over it.

Watching the Devils with a 1-0 has to be the most frustrating experience in hockey. If I were a Devil fan I suppose I’d take the win and try to defend 2 points as “exciting”, but the play on the ice would bother me.

Get to the red line and dump it in. Send in one forechecker, place two forwards between the red and blue lines and line the D up on the red line. Keep the opposition from getting to the red line. Rinse, repeat.

Rangers need to make some decisions on Defense soon

No doubt everyone noticed how tired Mark Staal looked (and Giradi too) last night. This is partially a result of the MDZ debacle … namely Torts does not trust the third pair (MDZ & MG) and is forced to play the top two even more. This team will not make the playoffs with 4 defenseman being overplayed … particularly the top 2 … just won’t happen. Why on earth is this kid (and Gilroy) still on this roster? … last night each missed a wide open net either of which meant at least1 point possibly 2. Neither is getting it done offensively and have been left off the PP. Team plays better with Eminger. I believe they are being showcased as trade bait but their pairing is costing the Rangers almost nightly in one way or the other.
Sather – make the deal for Richards … helps Gabby, helps faceoff %, helps give vet leadership, Plays PP and Point and is a young 30 soon to be 31 … sign to a 4 year deal and end it … I think Drury is just about done anyway
