Gaborik Has a Concussion

Breaking News: Marian Gaborik is out with no timetable for his return with a concussion.

Gaborik concussion. Torts not sure when it happened. Probably not this game

Torts: He's been off

New York Rangers star right winger Marian Gaborik has a concussion. He left the game today after the first period and didn't return. Gaborik hasn't been himself lately, this might very well be the reason why. Gaborik has 17 goals and 21 assists in 46 games this year for the Rangers, which puts him second in points on the team behind Brandon Dubinsky. There is no doubt that the Rangers will miss him and his offense in the home stretch. There is no timetable on his return. The team is expected to make a call-up from the Connecticut Whale.

Andrew Gross
Tortorella says no timetable on Gaborik, not sure when it happened, doesn't think it was in this game. Says there will be a call-up.
Jesse Spector
Concussion for Gaborik. Said he didn't feel well after first period. Tortorella unsure when injury happened.

What this means for the team here in the home stretch is unknown right now. Will the Rangers have to become buyers instead of holding steady like they have been with the trade deadline rapidly approaching? Will the club go after some secondary scoring? We'll have to wait and see what unfolds.

We'll provide you with more details as they become available.

I don’t undertand how they diagnose a concussion. Is there a way to tell for sure that’s what it is? I can’t think of any headshots he took recently, but other teams do play him physically because they know it works.

Sorry to hear this, feel better Gabby.

Probably a few symptoms to look for

Like dizziness, nausea, short term memory loss, bad balance, and general “I feel like shit”-iness.

On the flip side, this could lead to even more offensive struggles and more Ls. Only time will tell

I wouldn’t do a a damn thing at the dead line. Let this team play out the season the way they look now and see how they do. I think they’ll play better than what most people are thinking. The Rangers played their best hockey when Drury and Gaborik were both out. Guys like Boyle, Callahan, and Dubinsky stepped up their own game and led this team and I think they’ll do it again.

by AveryGod on Feb 20, 2011 4:54 PM EST reply actions

I agree. Nothing is a boring move, but right now, would be the best move as far as deals.

by Joe1969 on Feb 20, 2011 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

Actually...

this makes even more sense than the pulled groin explanation. It really looks to me like he’s been playing with a concussion and afraid to risk going into the boards. Not only that, but when a player has concussion symptoms it often hurts to walk…the heels hitting the ground jangle the brain and make a person nauseous. This explains why he’s been drifting. I couldn’t really figure out what was up with him at all…if anything this shows his character.

Is it time to pull the trigger on a deal? If we’re going to do anything this year we need a hardcore veteran blue liner and a scoring threat. Either that or we just stick with this core and see what happens the first quarter of 2011-2012 before making a move.

by voice22 on Feb 20, 2011 4:56 PM EST reply actions

If he was playing even though he knew there was a chance he had a concussion, it may show character, but it is also ill-advised and self-destructive, IMO.

to be real

the team has talent and if we could find a right pairing of lines we could win without Gaborik
call a spade a spade, Gaborik hasnt won us any games this year besides when he goes off
Gaborik is a great player, last year he carried this team
whatever the reasons are, this year isnt his year
I expect a 40 goal season from him next year

its Henrik Callahan Dubinsky Anisimov Wolski Stepan MZA Avery Boyle Prust
Stall Girardi Sauer Gilroy McD its all their time to step up and these guys can all play at a high level
not enough talent to beat Philly or top NHL teams, but we can beat teams around the 6 seed
when Gaborik was gone the first time, I thought the team played pretty well

IMO I think its time to give up on Christensen. He is barely noticeable on the ice these days. His game is feast or famine but mostly famine. I understand he has talent but his inconsistancy has me thinking we should play someone else instead. Trade him or send him down already.

Horrible timing, but if the guy has a concussion he cannot try to play through it. His personal health and well-being is more important than the game. Rangers may just want to focus on developing younger guys from this point on in the season because they aren’t going ver far in the playoffs playing like this anyway.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Wade Redden is the forgotten man on Broadway this season, banished to the AHL in the preseason to delete his $6.5 million salary-cap charge from the Rangers’ ledger.

Saturday night, the 33-year-old defenseman got to enjoy a special occasion in his year in the wilderness, playing in Whale Bowl, an outdoor game at the University of Connecticut’s football stadium. Redden notched an assist in the Connecticut Whale’s 5-4 shootout loss to the Providence Bruins.

After the game, Redden told the Daily News that when this season ends, and he tries to chart a course back to the NHL, he will consider walking away from the remaining three years and $16.5 million on his Rangers contract.

“That’s one of the options,” Redden said. “There’s that, there’s coming back here, there’s going to Europe. I don’t know. It’s a lot of money, but at the same time, I don’t want to – it’s only a short time that you have a career, so you want to be at the highest level as long as you can. Obviously, the money isn’t the No. 1 thing.”

Redden had the option to walk away when the Rangers assigned him to the minors after he cleared waivers in September. He knew then that accepting the demotion would mean a full season in the AHL, as the Rangers would risk being stuck with half of his salary charged to their cap for the life of the contract were he to be claimed on re-entry waivers.

“That’s the reality, I guess,” Redden said. "Obviously, you’d rather be in the NHL and have an opportunity there. Things didn’t work out in New York, but we’ll see. When I came down, and talked with my agent and other people that I respect and get advice or whatever from, coming here for a year was kind of my mind-set and I didn’t ever really expect to get called up or picked up on waivers. So it isn’t like I’m disappointed that it hasn’t happened….

Well, it’s obvious he’s been playing poorly, so instead of making him a healthy scratch, they’re calling it a ‘concussion’ as a way to take him out of the line-up while preserving his integrity.

Yes, I’m kidding after what happened with Drury. I’d like to find out when this happened though. Is this something that happened a while ago and he’s been playing through it, or is this recent? It sucks, because he’s such a specially talented player with just a horrible injury history, and we got spoiled last year with him mostly healthy.

Also have to look into Newbury being called up. From all accounts Grachev has been playing really well in the Whale and with this team lacking scoring, I figured he’d be the 1st guy summoned to fill-in. Is it a sign they’ve decided to let Grachev finish his AHL season while playing confident hockey, instead of trying to fit him onto the NHL squad to the detriment of his development? If that’s the case, I hope they do the same with MDZ.

No, it really was a joke.

But as I said with the Drury injury, is this something that he’s had for a while that was either 1)undiagnosed, which I doubt since Ramsey is one of the top guys around or 2)they’ve known about it and either forced or let them play with it, which is criminal on both accounts, especially with concussions. History has proven you don’t dick around with a concussion, no matter what a player says, if they don’t pass the tests with flying colors, you don’t play.

there's a difference between soft and injury prone

And while Gaborik may not be a callahan type player, he is not “soft” which is an insult, I’ve always taken exception when a player is called “soft” or “gutless” because they don’t play a certain style or because they don’t knock everybody over to get the puck. I have no doubt that Gaborik has been playing hard and trying his hardest and this year was just a down year for him, I may be in the minority there, but I would never question Gaborik’s toughness

Well said 8k

Though I would say that Gaborik has avoided the high-traffic areas and more than likely has avoided contact when he could, but what highly skilled pure sniper doesn’t? He doesn’t have the strength of some other players so he has to elude contact, he has to play that way to be effective. He isn’t going to muscle his way into scoring areas and absorb hits, he is going to use his speed and skill to get into those areas when he is healthy, which clearly he hasn’t been.

Insulting Gaborik for being ‘soft’ because he gets injured is a not only ignorant but it is profoundly cruel. I tend to wonder if he was Canadian or American would so much of the fan base question him as much as they do now. Has it occurred to any of the doubters that he has been playing through a concussion for at least one game (who knows how many more)? How many of us know what it is like to go through the physical therapy of all the injuries he has had and to come back each time, knowing it might happen again, and be worse than it was before. Any and every hockey player that steps out onto the ice is tough. It is a tough fucking sport, it has hard ice, merciless frozen discs of rubber, fast moving sticks, and men with blades strapped to their feet.

for all of those calling for gaborik to be traded

Think twice…after what happened to marc savard and gabys already shaky injury record there will be a lot of GMs passing on him. “Concussion” is now a red flag word that teams, will not want to sell for, and even if it is one concussion, it makes the second, third, and fourth concussions all that easier to get. So even if Gaborik is traded in the offseason his value has taken a significant hit today

No joking about this one..

I chide Gabby for a number of things, but head injuries are serious. Rangers need to play this smart to protect Gabby’s health and value to this team or another down the road. I had a very bad drunken slip and fall in college; concussion, fractured skull with some bleeding on the brain, it was a nightmare. I would get headaches and nausea if I was in a car that moved too fast, got up too quickly out of a chair, lights/sound all threw me off… I was miserable for about three months. Not to mention almost 90 days of sobriety during my junior year of college, lots of Mary Jane during that time. Let’s all hope that a few weeks from now we can be back to debating his playing style and jam level when he’s back on the ice.

when and where did gabby get hurt??? trade bait just like rosival and i love it

send him to la, san jose, somewhere like that and get back draft picks or a prospect center or powerplay d man,.. lets go rangers…

we have good youth coming up with chemistry

Again

No GM will take any chance on Gaborik now with him having a concussion…it is too risky to send draft picks/prospects for a guy who just suffered a concussion

"Don't look now, but there's one too many people in this room and I think it's you." Groucho Marx

"He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot" Evgeny Nabakov on Garth Snow

In Prust We Trust

"Kovalev would work with Tortorella like a kitty would work in a microwave.

A lot of smoke and desperate clawing at the door. It wouldn’t work. It would just be a big, hot mess." -Dig Deep

by NYRANGER on Feb 21, 2011 11:51 AM EST reply actions

He doesn’t help us win games. That’s the point of hockey.
