The Rangers Should Consider Zherdev

Now that Marian Gaborik is likely to miss significant time with a concussion, the Rangers need to weigh their options for a top six winger to replace him. However, options are limited and prices are steep. Kris Versteeg, a second line winger at best,  fetched a first and a third round pick from the Philadelphia Flyers. There are few ideal options on the market for the Rangers. Largely because they are going to need to balance their future when making a deal. They need help, but they can't afford to commit significant resources to a trade deadline acquisition.

Glen Sather will need to get creative.

Now that the Flyers have acquired Versteeg, Nikolai Zherdev has been a perpetual healthy scratch. We all know the story with Zherdev. Super talent, little to no consistency. But in limited ice time this year he has notched 15 goals and for all we now, he'll be so happy to be getting ice time that he'll manage to be an effective player down the stretch in the short time that he's needed.

The key to Zherdev is price. He is by no means an ideal option but with little use to the Flyers, he likely could be had at a nice discount. The Rangers and Flyers rarely, if ever do business. But it is certainly worth kicking the tires on him. Zherdev has proven to be an effective player at times in the past. The hope would be that the Rangers could catch lightning in a bottle.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Uhhh..Why?

There is no way in heck that the Rangers go after Zherdev. Torts hates him and he hates Torts. He is a Jekyll and Hyde player, feast or famine. We’ve already seen him tank the second half of a season and play the Invisible Man in a playoff series. Why would we want to see that again? Why would we bring in a player who would be a negative influence in the locker room?

by BeukeBOOM! on Feb 21, 2011 12:11 PM EST reply actions

its all about price.

if they can get him for next to nothing. no harm, no foul. taking a chance that won’t have any adverse effect. he underperforms? stick him in press box. no big deal.

Please NO! We already have a talented player with good hands, who shows up half the time, is soft, and doesn’t play defense. Christensen.

I’d pass on this as well. Rangers seem to be at this point just evaluating who is on the roster in terms of who will still be here in October. My guess at this point is that very little dealing is done, and that the Rangers will stick with the hand they were dealt. At this point, it is probably the smart move.

I agree, and would add that I’d much rather see Grachev get another chance to experience the NHL level of play than pour worse money after bad on Zherdev 2: The Sequel.

I’d get more enjoyment out of using $100 bills to light cheap cigars than watching the penultimate frustration of Zherdev being a disappearing phantom….at least I can watch the $100 bill go up in a column of smoke.

I’d rather trade MDZ for Penner, given Hemsky’s injury history. But that locks up cap space beyond this season, so that isnt a good move either. I would not trade a 7th round pick for Zherdev. Being that his is currently a Flyer, how do we not all despise him?

While Zherdev would be intriguing

like john said the flyers and rangers never do business and probably don’t exchange christmas cards, so my feeling is that the flyers will realize how desperate the rangers might be and will blow the market up for a player like zherdev and ask for way too much. I’d rather look out west, or outside the division if sather wants to bring in outside scoring help. I say stand pat and maybe give Grachev a decent shot on the second or third lines just to see what he could do

i always liked him

one of the better “disappearers” in the league, could have turned into the russian dani briere…i remember voros and dubi liking the dude (some playstation talk?) and i don’t reacall any rangers players trash-talking about him so idk about his bad locker room influence.

we’ve also seen how torts can change his attitude towards players (avery). dealing for him for the right price is not a bad idea imo, but i’m one of the few Z supporters out there, so i guess that’s not an objective opinion, and most fans would vote against. he’s not a fan’s player (nor is he a coache’s player when i come to think of it)….

You must have missed the last 30 games of the 08-09 season.

This POS did the ultimate turtle act, he wanted nothing to do with pressure/contact/playoff hockey and was invisible when it counted. At least Gabby puts up points consistently (if not goals). This turd has no place in this Rangers locker room. All he would be is a potential distraction to Torts, who needs to be focusing on getting more out of talented guys who will be here in the future (Wolski/Stepan/Zucc) and giving them more quality minutes. The only person benefiting from this would be MDZ, he’d get a bit of a reprieve from being Torts only whipping boy.

I agree on that if we can get Zherdev at a relative low cost its good. If he doesnt perform we could put him in the press box. Think that Hemsky or Penner will do more damage to our young roster players or farm..I would prefer Liles over McCabe, but the price is very important..

Call me crazy...

But the rangers played well without Gaborik. Injuries to top guys gives hungry guys like Prust, Avery, Boyle, Zuke, Cally and Dubi more ice time. Weve said it before that Gaborik doesnt fit the hard nose dump and chase system and he has only scored in 10 games all year anyway. This season Gaborik himself was a hole in the lineup and I think the Rangers have the depth to survive without going crazy looking for a replacement.

by NJblueshirt on Feb 21, 2011 1:08 PM EST reply actions

I agree to a point

Our team did play well without him but lets be honest, We have yet to carry a 20 goal scorer by this point in the season…we are in need of help. Boyle is spotty, Avery has lost his scoring touch, as did Prust, Cally, Step, Zucc, and Dubi will have to carry the team. IMO we need one more scorer. At least a guy that can be a threat.

There should be reason for everything

And there was a reason why Zherdev was invisible at the end of 08-09.
Most of you probably don’t know but the guy is an alcoholic at his young age.
He was staying in the same building with Kalinin and they were drinking buddies.
Plus genious Sather added another alcoholic Antropov at the deadline and guess where he was staying? Of course with Zherdev whose Ukranian girlfriend had moved out by that time.
Now put together all these factors and you’ll get a reason why he was so horrible at the end of the season.
Buttom line, get Zherdev and keep him away from Anisimov and Grachev:))

No, No and thousand times, NO!!!!

Forget the fact that Zherdev’s 1) already demonstrated significant inconsistencies when he was in NY the first time 2) basically a “poor-man’s Kovalev” 3) relationship with our current coach is a question mark 4) salary vs. play would certainly be an inequtiable return on investment …generally speaking, the bottom line is all of this talk about us now suddenly needing a “top six forward” to replace Gaborik SCREAMS of deperation and short-sightedness. Much as I hate to type it, Gaborik has marginally, at best, been performing as a top six forward this season, so why are we now suddenly bantering about the burning need for someone of this caliber – which Zherdev clealry is not, even on a good day??

Either this team’s “identity” is based on a a “grind-it-out”, “built for the future”, “not-individual-based” team concept or not. Period. If not for the recent skid of losses that’s made our play-off bid a question mark, would we still be panicking like this while sitting comfortably in 5th or 6th place? I don’t think so..or at least I hope not…To hear Tortorella express such panic after yesterday’s loss is yet another example of his inability to truly and accurately see the “big picture” when it comes to the organizaion. For someone who won’t even comment on something as basic as an individual player’s performance right after a game for fear of being over-reactionary, where does he get off speaking about personnel needs w/o at least sleeping on it or waiting to hear more about Gaborik’s concussion?? Very hypocritical…

The whole thing stinks like yesterday’s diapers! I’m sorry, Mr Sather, that there’s now a chance some of that tantalizing play-off revenue may not be available to pay for “loyal?? minor-leaguer” Wade Redden’s disgusting salary while he contemplates his future European career, but either put up or shut up about the whole “buliding-from within” BS. Like many fans have posted on this blog, given the progress the organziation has made in several key areas (youth, leadership, cap-reduction, etc.), this season would likely already be considered a “success” if it ended today – sans play-offs. So, I ask you, why should that opinion and our personnel plans change now?…

Just needed to be coached

I think Zherdev just needed to be coached, and Torts came in with a very clear image of the team that didn’t include anyone not willing to suffer his tirades and fit his mold. He gets on guys like that. Remember that game Boyle (one of our most productive players this season) was literally getting punched in the shoulders by the guy as he ranted at him? Or when he gets on a 20 year old Del Zotto’s case mid-game (true, someone should talk to him, maybe send him down again, but not in the middle of a game when he needs every scrap of confidence he can get).

After Torts lost us the series against Washington, there was another player that didn’t fit the concept that he let go, too. Betts. And they acquired freaking Brashear! The guy who broke his collarbone. Now Betts is one of the top penalty killers in the league and leads teams in short-handed goals. But he didn’t fit Tort’s concept, either.

Nobody tracks ‘unforced turnovers’…for credited giveaways though:

43 games – 225 giveaways before the trade (5.232 per game)
18 games – 81 after the trade (4.5 per game)

28.39 SOGF, 30.05 SOGA per game before the trade
32.39 SOGF, 28.44 SOGA per game after the trade

But keep in mind that teams that are constantly trailing like the Rangers have been post-trade will tend to outshoot their opponents.

Well

Those numbers don’t necessarily mean we don’t miss him. As George said, teams that are losing tend to outshoot their opponents. So the swing in shots for versus against isn’t necessarily as great as it sounds. It corroborates neatly the amount of time the team has spent trailing opponents after the trade.

This is no accounting for JAM, though. It’s well known among spaghetti monsters and statisticians alike that the only skaters who can produce JAM are North American

Z can give us those in bundles. If he pulls another disappearing act, so be it. We’ve got a team full of guys who disappear. He’ll just be another name on the list. Z isn’t a long term solution to our scoring problem, but he’s one of the best quick fixes I’ve heard mentioned in a while. If Zherdev and Dubi can show some of the chemistry they had the first time around, maybe we can get in, and even sneak by someone. If it doesn’t work, atleast we tried. It comes down to Torts though. The Torts way hasn’t gotten us there so far. He’s gotta do what’s best for the team, and put his ego aside.

hello everyone my name is Anthony i have a few thoughts about this season and next season

by Anthony Tamburro on Feb 21, 2011 4:36 PM EST reply actions

ill start with recent news a big NO! to zherdev, trades THIS year, but next year is the year we start moving foward or at least try to. i say IF we dont get Richards n the offseason, i say we go the same line-up as its been minus prospal. we need all the cap space we can get ive been reading this site since hossa became a free agent after reading for a good time now i figuered it was time to submit my thoughts. so here goes as i said already i hear a lot of people are interested n Penner i am too cuz if we can trade for him NEXT year baring any injury nd IF Redden voids his contract which i saw on snyrangersblog i think we can squeeze him in cuz i mean he is younger than richards and NEXT year he won’t cost us that much cuz of the last year of contract and if we can hang on to that extra 2nd rd pick we have a shot, although it may take a little more. if drury can pull a naslund we will b so much closer than the 3-5 yr span i saw on an post it would b 2-3 yrs. w/o drury we would have richards n w/o redden 3.5 n prospal we have penner w/o giving up great core players n assets minor very minor changes so i say we try that course cuz this year doesnt have a pool of great free agents but next year its pretty good i believe, ive been looking on cap geek which also includes sharp? but we will see

Penner-Richards-Gaborik
Dubi-stepan-callahan
wolski-anisimov-zucc
fedo-boyle-prust

w/o-christensen (possibly to EDM) which would b more money saved at the end of that year so patience can b huge n w/o moves this year n this off season

no way we are getting penner unless dubi or del zotto is involved cause renney loves dubi but nice try .

Antropov might cost assets and he has a terrible contract. Zherdev is UFA after this year, 2 million dollar cap hit and won’t cost serious assets, I really don’t see the downside.

And next

Come hell or high water.

Well Cup, but only without Zherdev. Every Ranger fan would and should give up the chance at a cup if it meant keeping that miscreant away.

In other news, Whale win again. 2-1 Grachev nets his 14th and Redden ripped the game winner in OT.

They’ve been on a solid winning streak since Newbury/Dupont/Weise have been back. Looking at stat sheets and highlights its tough to tell how Grachev is progressing, but he looks hot/cold with 5 shots one night followed by nothing the next. Still only 20, so he’s still got some time on his side. Hopefully they make the playoffs, should be good for his development.

No thanks

Zherdez doesnt make us a cup contender so I pass on him. He has proven his lack of effort time and again. I would not want him infecting this young team. I’d take missing the playoffs this year if we can get younger talent by trading away Prospal, Christensen, Avery &/or Emminger. Some contender might think some combination of those guys could put them over the top. They dont put us over the top so trade em high.

Just asking.....

What about M. Ribiero. I don’t have time to llook up his contract right now, but he is decent. Last 10 goals came when Dallas was either down by one or tied. I know he is 31 but what is the upside / downside. Especially since we had talks with Dallas.

Sorry, spellin—Ribeiro and he has 2 years left @ 5 mil per year. Oh well.
