Rangers Recap: Goalski, Lundqvist Help Rangers Defeat Hurricanes, 4-3

With the Rangers down 3-2 midway through the third period, Ranger fans everywhere were taking steps closer and closer to the edge of the cliff. The entire season was flashing before our eyes as it appeared the Blueshirts were going to lose yet another key game in the standings. But just as they did often in the first half of the season, they fought back and they fought back hard. Effort, desire and desperation all factored into the comeback and eventual shootout victory. A win like this is exactly what they needed confidence-wise, and now they have to build off of it.

The Rangers came out firing tonight in Carolina, and for the second straight game got on the board first when Brandon Prust's goal just 2:08 into regulation gave them an early 1-0 lead. The play was sparked by Sean Avery's strong move to the net, where his attempted wraparound slid through the crease and right to a crashing Prust. The Blueshirts grabbed instant momentum from that goal and continued to pepper goaltender Cam Ward with constant shots. Ward, though, rose to the challenge and did not let another in.

Henrik Lundqvist was just as good down the other end in the first period, but unfortunately was beat by Jay Harrison on a breakaway at 16:35. Well, maybe I shouldn't say that since Harrison's shot hit the post and then bounced off Henrik's back and into the net. So yes, typical Rangers' luck came into play and despite dominating the first twenty, New York found themselves tied going into the intermission.

The second period was more closely played as the Hurricanes had awoken, but I still gave the Rangers the edge as far as chances and time of possession went. Both Ward and Lundqvist were putting on a clinic in net, so it was no surprise that it took a deflection by Ryan Callahan late in the second to finally give the Rangers a 2-1 lead. The goal came on the powerplay when Mats Zuccarello perfectly placed a point-shot low for Callahan to redirect; that's just what the alternate captain did and Ward basically had no chance of stopping it.

But that lead did not hold up for very long as Jussi Jokinen found the top corner on Henrik Lundqvist at 3:32 of the third. About three minutes later Jokinen scored again when he was left wide open by Michael Sauer, and that would give the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead. Time was going on and on and still no answer from the Rangers. Then, just when we thought they were down and out, Wojtek Wolski made a strong move into the slot and threw a shot on goal that was deflected by a Carolina defender and into the net. That tying tally came with just under two minutes left in regulation.

Overtime was very entertaining with consistent back and forth action, but once again both goalies stood on their heads and stopped everything that came their way. Neither one of them was going to budge, so to a shootout we would go to find the winner of this one.

Star-divide

Just before the beginning of the shootout, while the ice was being cleared off by the Zambonis, Wojtek Wolski skated over to the corner of the rink where back-up goaltender Martin Biron was watching the game. The two stood there and chatted for a good minute or so before Wolski headed back to the bench.

Well isn't it funny that Wolski turned out to be the only scorer in the shootout for either team, and ended up winning the game for the Rangers with a laser of a wrist shot over the glove of Ward. Does Biron get an assist on that?

Staying on the topic of Wolski, I said earlier on twitter that he has been one of the Rangers best players as of late. Well ain't that the truth. He finally looks comfortable on this team and has confidence with the puck. When he has possession, it is very difficult to knock him off the puck. He showed that tonight and he showed it Sunday against Philadelphia as well. Watch out for Wojtek GOALSKI, because he could turn out to be a very important player for the Rangers in the final months of the season.

Besides Wolski, the other player that stood out to me tonight was Mike Sauer on defense. He'll probably take the blame for the third Hurricanes' goal, but besides that I thought he had one of his best games of the season, if not THE best. He's now learning how to join the offense and get shots to the net, and he is picking it up rather quickly too. Just look at the tying goal; he may not have scored it, but he was standing right there if there was a rebound. Silent player, but a very effective one.

Speaking of defensemen, Marc Staal left the game after the second period and did not return. Many thought it was because of the high hit his brother applied on him when Marc had his head down along the boards, but it turns out it was just a twisted knee that he suffered early in the game. Doesn't seem too serious and I would fully expect him to play Friday in Washington.

Last but not least, we cannot forget about Henrik Lundqvist and his 30 saves. Without him I think the Rangers lose this game.

In my opinion, this is the biggest win of the season for John Tortorella's squad and I'll tell you why. The Rangers remain in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, but are now eight points ahead of ninth place Buffalo and only one point behind the sixth place Habs. They are in decent position considering how frequently they have lost as of late, and they will have a chance to carry on the momentum Friday when they visit Ovechkin and the Capitals.

Very surprising coming from Callahan.

Not a “dirty” hit in my opinion. Staalsy’s head was down, Eric might have hit him high but it was with the shoulder, not the elbow.

It’s funny, I’d like to see an interview with the 4th brother (Justin?), because the 3 in the NHL just seem so different. Marc seems like a pretty aloof guy, just a take things as they come, book-reading quiet kid. Then there’s Jordan who seems to fit the surfer-dude, life-of-the-party cliche (think Spicoli). Then there’s Eric, who comes off as a bit of a condescending douchebag, frat-boying cool kid.

Erics a traditional hockey player

Aside from the few “chosen ones” in every generation, who get a pass on physical play, no matter how good they are, alot of these guys realize that physical play is part of their game. As much skill as you might have, being able to beat a guy with your shoulder too will only help your skill game. I don’t think of it as being a douche, I think it’s just competitive nature coming through, and that’s something you need to have to be one of the best.

I don't think it was a dick move at all

Eric has never been afraid to play physical, and would have done the same to anyone. Agree that Marc should have had his head up, but I think Eric committed to playing the body before he knew his head would be down. Even with the new rules, this is gonna be a tough area to call, but in a situation like that, I’d like to see the checker get the benefit of the doubt. I’m a bit tougher on Marc then alot of other fans, but I think that hit could be a turning point for him. If he spent a little more time working on his puck control/skating and in the weight room, that never would have happened. If he put on the 10 pounds of muscle he needs, that wouldn’t have happened. Something tells me this might be the inspiration he needs.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 23, 2011 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

If Staal puts on 10 lbs of muscle

He might not be able to skate the way he does now. He’s a pretty slick skater [for a tall defenseman] especially going up ice with the puck. I don’t know if the trade off would be worth it.

But he’s agile now. And agility, lateral quickness is just as important in the post-lockout NHL

Look at othe guys his size

They’re all carrying 10 pounds more then him. If he’s playing Mike Greens game, maybe I agree with your argument. Honestly, the fact he HASN’T put a pound on since jrs is part of the reason I get down on him so much

Doesn’t matter what you hit the guy with; shoulder, elbow, pocketbook. If the head is the primary point of impact they get hurt and you have a date with Colin Campbell for a game of Wheel of Justice.

by SimpleManiac on Feb 22, 2011 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

Marc Staal’s head was down. Happened with Brian Boyle and Spacek (I think) recently, a guy gets his head down and he puts himself in a vulnerable position. No reason for a date with Colin Campbell in my opinion, (Marc) Staal has to keep his head up on that play.

i have to disagree with cally. Marc’s a lucky guy because his head was down on the play. you can attribute that to the distraction caused by the penalty taken on the play, but i still think Marc didn’t get hurt on the hit (which was a solid hit imo) and that’s what matters.

Tortorella: Staal twisted his knee in the first period, got worse as the game went on, him leaving not related to hit by his brother.

Zuke/Step/Wolski line played another really good game. They were our best line again, and Wolski with a garbage goal and that absolute beautiful shootout rip.

Zuke with a great shot/pass on the 5 on 3 power-play and Callahan with another great tip.

Hard to say anything negative about Sauer or McD, but Sauer did lose Jokkinen there. Gotta stay with your man. I think it’s says a lot about those 2 that it’s one of the few bad plays I’ve seen out of that pairing. Other than that they played terrific. I hope they don’t wear down or hit a wall, because Torts is asking a lot out of them. A lot of minutes and responsibility for 2 rookies.

Gilroy had a somewhat poor game IMO. Bad turnover that led to a goal, and I think he had a coverage miscue on Jokkinen’s power-play goal (I think he was replacing McD on LD so should have been out covering Jokkinen on the left there?) MDZ had a good effort, was very noticeable jumping into the offense, not too bad defensively (though he should have stayed back on the 1st goal. If your D partner is rushing up the ice, you gotta cover his ass.) But, damnit son, learn to hit the net. He missed a couple of golden opportunities from 10-15 feet out.

I hope Staal’s ok. If he’s hurt for any period of time, I think we’re done. Guys are already taxed out with the minutes they’re playing, and he’s been such a rock for this team.

Henrik…had a good game. Hard to fault him on any of the goals (breakaway, guy left alone in front, and a beautiful shot from inside the face-off dot) and he was perfect in the shoot-out. At some point though, he’s going to need to step-up and steal us some games. He hasn’t stolen a game in a while, and he needs to be that guy.

Lastly…this team needs more from Dubinsky. When Gaborik went down with the shoulder injury, Dubinsky turned into a man-beast for this team. Lately the only thing I’ve noticed from him have been undisciplined penalties. He needs to start dominating again, controlling the offensive zone, and being the man on the Rangers.

Speaking of defensemen, Marc Staal left the game after the second period and did not return. Many thought it was because of the high hit his brother applied on him when Marc had his head down along the boards, but it turns out it was just a twisted knee that he suffered early in the game. Doesn’t seem too serious and I would fully expect him to play Friday in Washington.

I don’t know about that. Missing half a game due to injury is pretty serious. And, even though they say he was pulled for the knee and not the upper body collision, Staal’s probably due for a neuro exam after slamming his head. With their franchise player’s health in question, I expect the Rangers to be as conservative as possible. Sixth through 10th place positioning in the conference isn’t worth any risk to the core of the blue line.

by dar9898 on Feb 22, 2011 11:55 PM EST reply actions

I agree that they will be careful

but the sentiment seems to be that his knee got worse and worse as time went on during the game, and they wanted to rest him.

Hopefully it’s not nagging, but with our luck this season his leg will probably fall off … he will fall (because he’s missing his leg) and get a concussion as a result of THAT fall.

and then Hank will be skating to leave the net because of course we are losing in that game late in the 3rd, he trips over Staal, he gets a concussion, and then the Rangers still manage to comeback and win in a shootout and give 50% of New York heart attacks.

Good point; they need to take care of these injuries much better than they have instead of letting lingering or nagging issues become 10+ games on IR.

The whole season has been poor from the PR standpoint of how they’ve handled some of the injuries. Drury, long-term knee issue that nobody knew about until, hey, he has to sit. Dubinsky’s leg fracture that nobody knew about…that amazingly healed in 2 weeks, and he didn’t look healthy in the first number of games he was back? Prospal’s knee…though he’s looked better, there were a couple games there where he looked like he was going to wind up hopping on one leg…now lingering concussion issues with Gaborik that the team seems to have known about, but did nothing about it? Can add Prust to this list. If they don’t make him take some time off he’s going to wind up collecting disability by the end of the season.

Seems they’ve either misdiagnosed, ignored things, rushed guys back, or let guys play when they shouldn’t. A lot of it seems to stem from the scramble to try and hold onto a playoff spot.

one piece of advice for Zucc from somone with about 1/100 of his talent

It seemed that cam ward has solved Zucc’s “slow mo wizardry” by coming out aggressively and staying upright longer, this seemed to throw MZ(A) off enabling Ward to force him wide. So on the next shootout its time for Frodo to speed things up a bit which would force aggressive goalies to back pedal faster and could lead to more openings

i dont know

Cam ward is not representative of most nhl goalies. He’s quicker, more athletic and more well-positioned than most. He can wait for MZA to slow deke and then react to the real move, but most goalies can’t hold that long

by dar9898 on Feb 23, 2011 9:27 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

what I think

Is that goalies are starting to watch tape of shooters and their shootout moves. So other goalies will look at MZA last night and, to me at least, he seemed a bit startled by Ward’s aggressiveness and they will start playing, him more aggressively than they normally would. In my opinion, some goalies approach the shootout like pitchers, coming up with strategies for different shooters

You could see Ward knew the move and was expecting it. Most goalies bite on the deke to the backhand, which allows Zuke to quick pull it back to the forehand and spank it home. Ward didn’t bite, he played it like Lundqvist would – just don’t friggin’ move until they shoot.

by Caerid112 on Feb 23, 2011 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

It was all an elaborate ploy to catch Ward flatfooted so Wolski could beat him.

EC – elaborate move involving dekes to both sides
MZA – slow motion move involving dekes to both sides
Wolski – comes in wide, rips it.

ehhh EC had him beat. if you watch the puck came off his stick a bit while he was on his forehand, and it slowed him down enough to let ward get the leg over.

ward really is an amazing goalie though

Oh I think goalies have been watching tape for a while. Or at least team personnel have been and informing goalies of moves and tendencies. They’d be negligent if they didn’t.

And I still think other goalies can’t get away with waiting like Ward did. Lundqvist can, but e.g. Brodeur would not be able to recover in that kind of time.

by dar9898 on Feb 23, 2011 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

Yup

It’s interesting b/c I think you’re right, yet up until facing Ward, EC and MZA were still able to beat ‘em, which goes to show you how even more incredibly effective the dekes must be when you actually have to stare them down vs. prepping for them from video. I actually think EC did a good job last night of trying to mix it up vs. MZA, who basically came in with the idea of using his same slow-down and quick-stick to the left move. It was only a matter of time before some goaiie not only knew he was going to use it, but clearly positioned himself to anticipate it. Ward was basically almost in front of the right post (from his perspective) when MZA started in on him, so essentially Ward just stayed there waiting for MZA to end up shooting at that side, which is why he’s an All-star.

Goalski did the right thing by just ripping one instead. In fact, his whole meeting thing w/ Biron before the shot brings up an interesting strategy ploy. Why not have all 3 shooters, together, meet w/ “Coach” Biron before it starts and actually coordinate all three of their moves as a unit (1 guy dekes, 1 guy shoots, 1 guy does a spin-a-rama, whatever?) Wouldn’t that be pretty wild to see?

by mgweissman on Feb 23, 2011 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

I think wolski wasn’t intending to do what he did, rather he pounced on an opportunity, ward was way off his angle on that shot leaving gloveside wide open. Just before the shot you can see wolski notice this as he almost flubs it beginning a deke, looks up and sees ward then rips it.

by teknics on Feb 23, 2011 1:56 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Good point..

I hadn’t noticed that. I think either Joe and/or Sam made the same point during the game about Ward’s glove side, but I initially disagreed as it looked like Ward’s glove was in decent position, but you may be right about Wolski’s decision change…

im not worried

about zukes penalties – he didnt nail it perfect last night, maybe he Did get a little rattled when cam stayed with him all the way, but with a better shot off the backhand it would have gone in – he just missed the goal…

and relax – he has plenty off other penalty shots in his bag of tricks.. fleury was lucky and off course good when he picked up the save in that shootout – but that was close – he stopped it with the back end of his pads… and there is plenty more….

Seemed like Ward was hip to Zuke’s move that he had been 5 of 5 with. Interesting to see what happens in the future. Will MZA have to bring out new tricks, or will he stay with the one move and just do it so well few goalies can stop it?

MDZ

Anyone else think that MDZ played one of his better games of the season? Made a great play on a 3 on 1 (did get beat by cole with his speed, but Id have to watch the game again to be sure DZ wasn’t just caught a little flat footed) and he made a couple of other good plays on defense. Don’t remind about the nets he missed tho lol.

Yeah he had a a pretty solid game

For Michael Del Zotto. But you have to remember he received sheltered minutes and should have been fresher than the other guys due to his lack of ice time. When Maurice was able to get Cole out on the ice versus MDZ, MDZ wasn’t completely “turnstiled” by Cole as he’s been treated by some other opposing forwards this season. So that’s an improvement.

And I didn’t see the goal off the Gilroy turnover, but where was MDZ then? I’m guessing up ice before his partner had cleared the zone.

by dar9898 on Feb 23, 2011 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

Absolutely

Oh, yeah, MDZ looked very good last night, especially on that 3 on 1. Not only perfectly timed to break it up, but he did it in a way where he was able to get right back up on his skates instead of being down and out afterwards. Solid! I’m still not exactly sure what Emminger did to incite Tortorella’s ire, but in any event, it’s good to see MDZ getting the time to play during key situations of the game….speaking of which, how about the play of McDonagh and Sauer? Man they were awesome out there, especially killing penalties. That’s huge in that we wouldn’t have to always try and keep a spent Staal/Girardi pairing out there for the kill. Nice to see…

by mgweissman on Feb 23, 2011 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

DZ looked better, but he still got burned on speed rushes by Cole twice in overtime….I’m not upset about him missing the net on those two shots, because he was getting into good position to take those shots in the first place. His pinches on both missed shots were perfectly timed, which is a good sign….that was one of his strengths early on in his rookie season, looking for shots in the right situations. He will hit the net soon for this team if he keeps playing smart like this in the offensive zone.

Prole art threat.

Newbury is the last forward on the roster. He’s not replacing Gaborik. When Gaborik is injured, each forward moves forward a space. If anything, Dubisnky, Wolski or Callahan are “replacing” Gaborik. Everyone else just follows in one spot behind along the train. If you can put Zherdev on the roster, then there’s no need for Newbury and the team’s talent improves by the difference between those two.

But a team lower in the standings will probably claim Zherdev.

Zherdev is talented. The Flyers have a ton of talent but thrive on Jam. Zherdev has no Jam. In fact, Zherdev decreases existing Jam levels 10% just by walking in the room.
(notice Jam is capitalized, it is that important to winning it must be set apart from other words that are far less important).

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

UMM.. HELLO!!

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

Goddamn it

The courage wolfski image changed because I didn’t upload it properly.

Thing had 12 recs. 12! I am uploading it with photobucket so that it stays here for you guys. There is a chance they will use that url for something that is offensive, because the site has some very offensive memes on it. I thought it was wise to take it down. By the way what the shit am I doing awake at 6:34 AM?
