Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

"Obviously, not that good," Staal said when asked how he felt about the play. "He left the game later, and I’m not sure if it was because of that hit. I didn’t think it was a dirty hit; it was one of those plays where I finished my check coming down – it happens."---Eric Staal, regarding his hit on Marc Staal last night.

If I were Marc, I would act as if nothing happened when talking to Eric and during the next Rangers-Carolina game just wait for my opportunity and put Eric through the glass!!! (literally) I really wanna see Marc step up his physical game agianst Eric, it seems like Eric always plays him hard and Marc doesnt respond.

Clean Hit

Staal needs to keep his head up. I hate Micheletti, crying it was a head shot. It was a clean hit. Screw Maloney too in the post game with the predatory hit theory. They are trying to pussify the great sport of hockey. His head was down and he got caught, wouldnt be the first time or the last. Every player gets caught at some point.

Agreed, he blew him up, but there’s nothing really dirty about it. If it was Eric Cole instead of Eric Staal, I don’t think it gets 1/4 of the coverage.

Near to free

He’d fit easily under the cap ($536,685 hit over the remainder of the season – Flyers have already paid him the first $1.46 million of his contract). Any way you dice it, Zherdev is more useful than Newbury.

I would claim him I don’t see the downside. Doubt he gets to us though, wouldn’t be surprised if NJ claims him.

Kotalik

was just placed on re-entry waivers…

just saying.

Ugh yeah ill take zherdev over him any day…

by Mr. Avery to you on Feb 23, 2011 1:50 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Kotalik’s contract also does not expire after this season, and he’s a useless even strength player.

by KingHenrik on Feb 23, 2011 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

There’s a couple teams with priority that will should give him a look…St Louis, Carolina, Colorado…getting a 15 goal guy off waivers at the deadline isn’t an oft-presented opportunity, lazy w/ an attitude problem or not.

He hit his head on the ice

That to me looked worse then the shoulder to shoulder hit.

Plus this is a moot point since it’s his knee that’s injured and nothing to do with the head. Eric’s quote was taken before it was announced to be a knee injury.

Eric 26
Marc 24
Jordan 22

Maybe Eric is just that typical douchey older brother but I do agree Marc is plenty capable of laying him out. Something tells me mamma Staal doesn’t want to see a physical game between bros. So marc is that good boy who listens. I think he is old enough now to realize its time to step up against that tool Eric

by XxC17xX on Feb 23, 2011 2:00 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I certainly hope so. If I were in his situation I would certainly always play hard against Eric, but would not deliver punishing hits to him because he is my bro-I would simply take him out of the play. BUT….after what Eric has done last night and has been doing this season against Marc, I would respond with an eye for an eye attitude….more like two eyes for an eye LOL But thats just me……

Jared is actually in the Carolina system now. The Hurricanes got him for a draft pick this offseason.

And there cousin Jeff Heerema who apparently plays in the UK after also playing for Carolina ….nuts that family is all about this sport … I wonder if they watch football or baseball at all Haha

Not only are they talented there obviously successful seeing as out of the dozens of young kids they seem to of gotten themselves all drafted

by XxC17xX on Feb 23, 2011 2:41 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

And out of all the brothers he’s the only right hand shooter ….wierd

by XxC17xX on Feb 23, 2011 2:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

They should do a short documentary of this family

I agree with Mike_from_NNJ and efizzle201

I think Staal’s head hitting the ice did more damage than the hit itself and Micheletti was wrong to cry “head shot” (esp. before he saw the first replay).

But to add to the 2nd point, I find it extremely ironic that a guy like Micheletti, who is so notoriously guarded in his words, to say the hit was illegal (illegal – no / dirty – debatable). He’ll go way out of his way to complement other teams and players (i.e. The Senators and Kovalchuk pre-January) and remain positive to the point of not remotely criticizing Ranger players who are playing downright terrible (i.e. Del Zotto last night – “He’s trying so hard” – reminds me of lackadaisical Drury). But now, when he is clearly wrong, he want’s to open up this can of worms?!?

I guess he likes to pick his battles, just in the most logically inconsistent way imaginable (The only thing in his defense is calling out Crosby’s slewfoot on Cally).

P.S. – I was defensive of Micheletti early on mostly because I think that he had impossible shoes to fill in the hearts of most Ranger fans being J.D.’s replacement, but as time has went on, I have just found him to be increasingly insufferable.

Eric Staal is a beast!

I thought the hit was clean, hard but clean. Is it Just me guys or does Eric Staals’ game remind you of a young Messier? He’s even starting to look and sound like Messier.

Zipay just reported Staal is with the team in Washington, not limping, and has no concussion symptoms.

he still needs to destroy Eric in the next game which unfortunately wont be until next season or maybe in the playoffs

by MattPwrcf1 on Feb 23, 2011 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

hmmm...

the way things are now…we’d prob only have the chance to see them in the playoffs in the conference finals like the 7 vs. 8 matchup from last year, very unlikely.
