The Flyers have placed Niky Zherdev on waivers. I think everybody here knows my opinion so I'll spare everyone another post outlining why.

Should the Rangers claim Zherdev (or Craig Rivet)?

Discuss.

snag him. hes free. all we do is complain about no skill on this team.

we would be stupid not to jump on this.

ZHERDEV > NEWBURY.

plain and simple.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

At this point, there’s almost no reason not to try and claim him. Expiring contract, Gaborik is lost for who knows how long, and there’s really no better options. Pick him up, put him together with Prospal and EC, and hope they find a way (they’re gonna be poor defensively though…) or have Prospal/Boyle/Zherdev so they have a little toughness and better defense and then have Aves/EC/Prust as the 4th line (don’t like splitting up Boyle/Prust, but Prust could use fewer minutes for a while considering how banged up he is).

No thanks on Rivet, unless there’s evidence Staal is hurt long-term.

by Caerid112 on Feb 23, 2011 4:48 PM EST reply actions

What could it hurt, he has an expiring contract we have the cap space and we need goal scoring. I know he does not mesh with Torts but maybe he could light a fire under his ass who knows its worth a shot. And if he doesn’t work out well sit him in the press box or whatever. the only drawback I could see happening is that Z could bring a bad attitude into the locker room and the whole team concept goes to shit but I dont think that would happen so, why not bring Zherdev back. Plus I would be cool to use my Zherdev jersey and actually have him on the team lol.

while thinking about this a lot today

I’ve persuaded myself to say that we could use Zherdev a lot more than we could use some other players that are out there…he’s got the skill that we all need and if we could put him on a line with stepan and zucc who would do the gritty work to get him the puck and besides he’s cheap and wont cost us pick/prospects

I was thinking if we did claim him maybe set up the lines like so:
Dubi/AA/Cally
Wolski/Stepan/MZA
Avery/Prospal/Zherdev
NewB/Boyle/Prust

It’d kind of look like a poor man’s Flyers, rolling three lines with two-way capabilities and no strictly “defensive” third line. There are worse ideas in the world.

speaking of people getting waived....

The Buffalo Sabres placed captain Craig Rivet(notes) on waivers on Wednesday in a bid to clear their books of a defenseman who has spent much of the season struggling to get playing time.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=AjwhQPMbhlcVAXKqbuztmy17vLYF?slug=ap-sabres-rivetwaived

so if the Sabres can waive their capitan, why cant we?
i mean obviously Dru is in a slightly different situation…and Rivet is making half the money that Dru is (3.5m)…but why don’t we have the balls to do it….

who knows, maybe now that he’s injured it doesnt matter much…does his NMC factor into being able to waive him? Technically we’re not actually moving him if we waive him, are we?

Guess I'm in the minority

I want nothing to do with Zherdev. Been there, done that.
I’m just as frustrated as the rest of you with this team’s inability to score consistently, but I don’t think it’s worth taking on that kind of baggage. Reeks of deperation. And I can’t imagine Tortorella would be too crazy about bringing him on board, especially considering how many times he’s praised the character and “compete-level” of this team.

What are those younger guys doing with the minutes

Zherdev was a #4 overall pick, cause he has a skill set like few other players in the world. He doesn’t know how to APPLY it to a winning team all the time, but when he can, he can bring EXACTLY what this team needs. It’s a low risk high-reward situation. Everyone’s concerned he’s going to “hide” again when the going gets tough. I think that’s going to be hard to do. When you watch our team enough, you’ll see most of the good hiding spots have been taken.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 23, 2011 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

To me, it’s completely about the “why” more than the “who.”

If we’re claiming him as an offensive ‘savior,’ and planning on giving him 20 minutes a night alongside Dubinsky, hell f-ing no to claiming him.

If we’re claiming him to fill out the bottom of the roster, 8-10 ES minutes a night against Charmin-soft opponents, with some splashes of PP time…I’ve got no issue with it.

We already have Zherdev part Deux, only he wears #26 and he actually can score in the shootout. Otherwise they are the same player, once every 10 games they do something dazzles you, and then disappear again. No room for two of those guys. Pass. Why do Ranger fans constantly want to add proven losers

I agree. This Ranger team has played very well for most of the season without Prospal, Callahan and Dubi’s injury stretch, not to mention Gaborik. Now that Ganorik is out indefinitely, everyone wants to occupy that spot with another no-show talent who already had his shot once before with this club.
Forget about the “he’s practically free, what could it hurt” rationale. You like the black and blue collar identity this team now has. You talk about trades and guys who can and won’t fit, then you want a guy like Zherdev back?? Friggen bunch of flim flammers. lol

Amen. I was wondering the same thing when reading this thread.

I’d rather call up Kotalik than sign an inconsistent overpriced forward waived outright by one of the team’s primary competitors. The same gent who believed in the KHL being his preferred home no less than a year ago.

…and Craig Rivet? Giloy, Eminger > Rivet. Heck, perhaps even Redden > Rivet. The rest of the starting 6 better. What are we thinking, folks?

Exactly! No guarantees either way. But I can guarantee that Zherdev will be EXACTLY the same player we have all come to dislike. You think it’s coincidence the Flyers placed him on waivers? It upsets chemistry. Not everything has to be a desperation move with this organization. I’ve learned that watching this garbage go on for 30 years with this club. If you suck, throw money at talent, yet here we are with 2 cups in 38 years.

Stand pat, let the rest of the season play out. If you make it you make it. Personally I’d rather put another 20 games of NHL development under a prospects belt than Zherdev.

Zherdev

I see the argument, that he comes cheap on cap hit, nothing in players or picks, and has an expiring contract, and can this PP really not use a guy with those tools dishing and shooting the puck? That PP can’t get any worse, and can use a selfish shooter. I am just having flashbacks to the end of that season where Torts was pulling his hair out with him.

I wasn’t too keen on the idea of trading for Zherdev because I didn’t like the idea of giving something up for him… and I didn’t think it was in any way possible that the Flyers would do a trade with us, especially when both teams are in the playoff hunt. The other factor being how high the market price is… but this is a moot point now that he is on waivers.

I was also critical because Zherdev and Torts didn’t exactly ‘mesh’ well. Zherdev’s play and attitude fits into Torts’ system like a… well it just doesn’t work well, and there is evidence of it from their time together here.

That being said if we can pick him up on waivers, play him in a limited role (Powerplay, 3rd line) against soft competition I see no reason not to go for it. We need a little more skill injected into the lineup and if this falls into our lap there is no reason why we shouldn’t do it. The rewards outweigh the risks now, no reason why the Rangers shouldn’t roll the proverbial dice on this one.

To those of you endorsing Zherdev Part Deux

Your like school boys hot for their ex-girlfriend when she wears a low cut top or shakes her ass. You forget that the relationship was mostly horrible and she left you with crabs, with the exception of two or three minutes when you played “just the tip”. You also conveniently forget that up until yesterday she was banging your worst enemy and he got rid of her because it wasn’t that good. Seriously, move on people. (As a disclaimer to the thought police, you can substitute the ex-girlfriend for ex-boyfriend or make this a same sex couple, just trying to show parallel in human nature, not denigrate anyone/thing).

My fan emotions tell me

To pass on Zherdev, been there done that with him and it didnt end well. But for all the complaints of his last stint here, his reputation for loafing it and the idea that he doesn’t fit with the “new grinding identity” I look at the Rangers offense for the last 20 or so games and think the “new identity” is basically producing the same results results right now as the old non-identified teams of the recent seasons. And “right now” is the operative term, Zherdev shouldn’t be anything more than a solution for “right now”. So, what the hell if he’s unclaimed might as well take him. Would people rather see them sending assets of any kind to get McCabe who’d be playing a role of giving the offense and PP a shot in the arm?

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Feb 23, 2011 6:56 PM EST via mobile reply actions

No No No No No No No....

……….NO. We don’t need other teams’ cast-offs. Christensen and Eminger are quite enough thank you. U know what Zherdev’s most famous offensive weapon is? Its disappearing for weeks at a stretch. If he can’t succeed on the deepest, most successful reg season team in the league what makes you think he will make a lick of difference back in NY? He’s an unengaged floater who occasionally strikes but is mostly useless.

Flyers GM told the media that Zherdev and his agent weren’t happy about Zherdev’s situation with the Flyers(being a perpetual scratch every game specially when they got Versteeg) so they wanted out but no other teams were willing to give up any assets for him…

I don’t understand why people fail to see what an unnecessary mistake this move would be to try and get him …

He didn’t work out the first time, he performed this season as he performed for our team when he was here … he was good for the Flyers up until Christmas and then has disappeared just like he disappeared for us when the going got tough and the games are now more of a grind … he cannot help us no matter how talented he is because he’s not the type of player that will battle through games at this time of year and because of that he will fail … “But stick him in the press box or waive him” if he’s claimed off waivers he cannot be waived again this season by our team, he has to remain on the club from what I understand with the rules and he was already unhappy in Philly and wanting out of there because he was being scratched so WHY would you bring in a player that has shown he cannot help you during this time of year who will be a negative presence on the team if he’s scratched instead of a good teammate because he won’t be happy?

This team, as flawed as it is, plays a hard, gritty game and they almost never give up … Zherdev has nothing that will mesh with the team the way it’s constructed … I really liked him when he was here but after I saw what he didn’t do once the Calendar turned to February I have no desire to ever see him wearing Ranger blue again

I don’t really want to add Zherdev but if we end up in the 8th spot and play #1 Flyers or face the Flyers in round 2 it could be good to have him if he will play extra hard against the team that waived him

This isn’t true …

  1. because Broussard is an ESPN NBA analyst, he knows nothing about Hockey and as such wouldn’t report anything about Hockey … if you go to his ESPN page there is only NBA stuff there …

In any case Brooks already reported that teams were asking the Rangers for Callahan, Dubinsky, Stepan, MDZ, Staal, Girardi, ect when it comes to trades … and that the Rangers are unwilling to part with their young core … specially for a player, Richards, who can be had for only money in the summer … getting Richards now will not make the Rangers into a Stanley Cup contender this season so it would make little sense for them to give up valuable young core players for him …

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO AND.........................................no.

This would be so stupid. Zherdev’s brand of lackluster, disappearing act hockey has no place on Broadway. Maybe back in the grim forgettable late nineties, early 00’s but not in the Era of Tort Reform.

Why poison our hardworking lineup with this floating, perimeter playing waste of a good hockey player?!

As I’ve stated earlier, I’d rather see us fall out of the playoff race than sign somebody like Zherdev.

And……….why is anyone thinking the Rangers could be dumb enough to trade away our assets for a guy shelved with a concussion whose starting the downslide of his career?

I hope that last tidbit is Eklund nonsense and not something Glen is trying to cook up.

There is little to no risk in signing Zherdev

What are we giving up?
Prospects? No
Picks? No
Players? No

If he doesn’t work you stick him in the pressbox and ride out the end of the contract

Yeah, stick him in the pressbox so he can be a negative influence on the team because he will be unhappy just as he was in Philly which prompted him and his agent to ask for a trade … our team doesn’t need that because Zherdev has proven that down the stretch he disappears and that’s where our team is at so he cannot and would not help us

by Claudia Matty Pepin on Feb 23, 2011 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

I think you are underestimating the personalities on this team

If you think that one winger picked up on waivers could destroy all of the chemistry that this team already has. Its not like he’ll be looked upon as some kind of savior, Z would be adding much needed scoring depth at a very reasonable discount. I don’t think its fair to compare the team he was on in 08-09 to this year because they are two different teams, with different mentalities. On that team he was expected to be our number one goal scorer and he couldn’t take the pressure, now he’d be asked to suppliment the goal scoring

Brandon......

……okay that was a little over the top…..you’re right I wouldn’t wish to miss the playoffs. I just don’t want any bandaids to take ice time away from developing kids.

Sure Zherdev wouldn’t destroy the team chemistry; its just….why put players on the ice who only give a spotty effort at best?

And whoever said, well if he doesn’t score he’ll fit right in needs to rethink that: here’s why. Brandon Prust goes eight games without a point. Okay, but during that stretch he’s a) hit everything in sight b) fought when its needed c) been a great locker room presence d) played smart good defensive hockey and d) killed penalties like a motherf**ker.

Same stretch for Zherdev: no points in a X amount of games, what ELSE is he giving you? Nothing, that’s what.

And that is just something we do NOT need in our lineup.

I’ll say it again: if he couldn’t find a niche playing with Briere, Richards, Giroux, Carter, Pronger, Timmonen, Leino, and whatever other talented bastards lurk in that awful orange and black uniform, he isn’t going to find one on the Rangers.

He’s a complete waste.

Zherdev Fun Facts

The only player to score more goals then him, since Z left Broadway, was Gabby last year.

Zherdev put up 23 goals next to his +6. He’s not the liability he gets made out to be. The worst thing that can happen if we pick him up, is he doesn’t score. If thats the case, he’ll fit right in. It’s worth taking a chance on. We need what he can bring BADLY.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 23, 2011 11:07 PM EST reply actions

What sounds like a more likely scenerio for a playoff run

Zherdev catches fire, and we ride his scoring to some wins through the first, maybe even second round ….

OR

We stick with what we have we get through two rounds of playoff hockey with no scoring, and through 3rd period comebacks….

Being able to comeback in the 3rd is good. Trying to win a series with 4 third period comebacks seems like a stretch.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 23, 2011 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

Zherdev catches fire……..

……..because Torts douses him in lighter fluid, calls his buddy Arnold (Gov. of California), who reprises a scene from “Running Man”, as he tosses a lit flare at the combustible soaked Niki in a corner of the locker room and says
“Need a light ?”

Unless the ONLY skill guys we bring in are Richards, Lecavlier, and St. Louis, Torts will have a problem with them

As I’ve said before, Torts has some inner issues to work out. He needs be brought back to earth a little bit. If Zherdev came in and didn’t do anything, nothing is lost, if he can add some goals, and get back chemistry with Dubi, we get the goals we need AND Torts gets a reminder that you can win with guys who aren’t just full of “jam”

by BuckarooClub on Feb 24, 2011 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

Think you've got the wrong guy that needs an attitude adjusment.

Not one GM claimed him off waivers. So – it’s not the guy who’s being tossed around as a possible Adams candidate. It’s the player…

Just sayin’…

by dbmaven on Feb 24, 2011 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

Torts would be an AWESOME ECHL coach

He can preach his “jam” and conditioning, which is mostly what he knows. Take late round picks and turn them into NHL roll players down there. He’d be the best. He doesn’t seem to relate to skill players. It’s one thing to expect them to cover on D and stuff, but I don’t think he knows how to use them. People point to guys like Richards and Lecavlier in Tampa, but I don’t think it’s as much a case of him making them, as THEM being awesome and brining him along for the ride. Torts was a dick to the media guys last year, then it seems like he got a talking to in the offseason, and has been a bit more relaxed, and they all commented on that in the beginning of the season.
Torts hasn’t shown a real embrace or understanding of any of our skill guys, he just wants to break them into guys who play his game. Torts is starting to look like he could be the new Roger Nielsen – A guy who can turn ANY team into a .500 team.

We’re not really anywhere different this year then last year. Our safety net has come from team like NJ and Buffalo having tough starts then us establishing ourselves.

I submit the following:

1 – When Niki won his arbitration hearing, Darth Sather breathed heavily into his mask, and declared that he would walk away. And he did.
2 – During that entire free agency summer period, nobody bit on Zherdev. Not one NHL GM or team. Zero. None. If he was THAT good, wouldn’t SOMEBODY have taken a flier on this guy ?
Answer: Nope.
3 – Zherdev and his ridiculous agent(s) head for the KHL, where he posts a positively mediocre season. If he had all THAT TALENT, shouldn’t he have positively dominated and posted record numbers??
Ooops – not so much.
4 – The Flyers take a flier on him, at a significantly reduced price (roughly 1/2 that arb. award of only 1 year earlier. And now he’s a healthy scratch for how many games in a row?? And he and his agent are “unhappy with his situation” ? He didn’t deliver on a consistent basis, showed the same attributes that landed him completely out of the NHL for a year, and he’s unhappy?? YGBFKM

I don’t think it matters how much people think the NYR “need” him. Sather doesn’t. And he won’t. That bus left the station 2 years ago with bad feelings all around. It got a thousand miles away and ran off a steep cliff.

No more Broadway Sequels. Sorry.

incidentally i agree and don’t think we should bring him in

however, since we wouldn’t be giving anything up, i wouldn’t be too mad if we did
at least he would stop scoring goals against us every single frickin time we play against him

+1 year and 2 million
I don’t want this guy anywhere near our young guys and our team chemistry. I know our locker room is strong right now, but there’s no real good that can come of adding his personality into the mix.
I’m much more focused on the long-term growth of this team, and less concerned about how many goals Zherdev might add to our playoff push.

I’d prefer this team to battle with what they have. It’ll only make them stronger as a group.

Who does get along with Torts?

I’m just saying, it wasn’t a case of him being a guy who no one liked. He shouldn’t screw up any chemistry. If anything, I think that he might bring out the skill game in some of the guys we need to step up.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 24, 2011 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

yea, but didn’t he drink himself stupid on off nights? I heard rumors about his partying and don’t really want him around guys like AA.
Besides, this is a different team now – its’ clearly Torts’ team – he has reshaped it’s identity. I refuse to believe that the relationships would be exactly the same as they were two years ago.

by j-red on Feb 24, 2011 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

I just don’t see the benefit the way others do… He’s not going to replace Newbury in the 4th line checking role; a young guy is going to lose minutes over him. When looking towards the long-term goals of the team, he doesn’t fit. We’re not winning the Cup this year, so unless we’re getting a piece for the future, I think we should stand pat.

In my opinion, the benefits of letting this team fight and grow together, as is, down the stretch, outweighs the benefits of bringing on Zherdev as a rental.

by j-red on Feb 24, 2011 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

My sources are telling me that.....

Chris Brousard is tweeting that James Dolan had a sitdown with Carmelo Anthony and he will be suiting up for the Rangers and will play left wing. He also reports that Albert Pujols is open to a trade to the New York Rangers and has no problem becoming an enforcer on the 4th line so we can protect Prust and keep him out of fights.

Reporting that Andy Pettitte will come out of retirement and will sign on with the New York Rangers and play left defense. This is great news if it is true. We can use a vet to coach our young dmen like del zotto and sauer.. Hope this is legit.
