Joe Nieuwendyk Has Lost His Mind, Afternoon Links

Marc Staal.

Brandon Dubinsky.

Derek Stepan.

According to Larry Brooks in the NY Post, that's what Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has informed the Rangers the price would be for Brad Richards. Three cornerstones of the franchise for a player the Rangers can have for just the cost of his contract in July.

To spin a popular phrase.....What? No Lundqvist?

[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 02/24/11 12:50 PM EST GABORIK104LIFE also had this in a Fan Post, props to him, he was posting it while I was writing this up, thanks!

Apparently, Joe also asked for The Statue of Liberty, the Chrysler Building, a Nathans Franchise, and to change the title of the Sinatra classic to "Dallas, Dallas".

Even Defending Big D, SBNation home of the Dallas Stars, is speculating on whether the price may be too high.

Puck Daddy has a different spin on it:

Now, this news could have been leaked for many reasons. As a public flogging of Nieuwendyk for his asking price. (Y! Sports Nick Cotsonika reports that "Joe Nieuwendyk denied he discussed specific players with Rangers regarding Richards." Which is expected.) As a way for the Stars to set the price for all the teams, or for the Rangers to scare away other suitors by leaking an exaggerated version of it.

Finally, some comic relief:

Despite my promise to never ever link anything on the Bleacher Report, this is quite comical: This Penguins fan (surprise surprise) wants everyone to lay off Matt Cooke, and even finds a way to quasi-compare Matt Cooke to Gordie Howe. Seriously.

He gives up Neal and Niskanen for Goligoski…but wants THAT for Richards’ expiring contract?

Adam Sandler said it best. “The Price is WRONG, BITCH!”

I don’t want us signing Richards because the contract demands would be ludicrous.

Giving up young, core players for him at this point is just about the dumbest motherf**king thing Sather could possibly do besides re-signing Redden and Drury for 8 million a year.

Nieuwendyk didn’t get as hosed in that trade as everyone makes it out to be. The Stars wanted Goligoski, and Neal was much, much more expendable than any other forward on the team. I’m telling you, at least the past 18 months, Neal isn’t as freaking awesome as everyone makes him out to be.

Also, I’m pretty sure Joe was more than happy to give up Niskanen and that contract.

That is likely true on the level of hosing, but still think Shero won the deal based on what his team has/needs.

no doubt he was happy to get rid of Niskanen at 1.5 mil next year as his game has fallen apart the last year.

by Michael Gleich on Feb 24, 2011 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think everyone is overlooking the Stars needs here.

Joe went after Goligoski and offered up Neal. It was perfect for both sides. It was one of those trades that filled needs on both teams.

I could swear I saw on Defending Big D before the deal happened an article talking about how the Stars didnt need GoGo or another offensive defender, but a defensive one?

Gut instinct on Richards: Moved or Stay?

by Michael Gleich on Feb 24, 2011 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Well, we need both.

Some think that what the Stars really need is a big, stay-at-home guy that provides a presence in front of the net. They have a guy in Nicklas Grossman who is working on that, and Mark Fistric is physical — but that true #1 guy? They don’t have him.

They also needed a true puck-moving guy. Trevor Daley is great at providing speed and jumping into the play, but he doesn’t push the puck up the ice and he’s not a great passer. They also, aside from Brad Richards, do not have anyone to run the PP effectively.

Goligoski filled one of those two needs. The other one still needs to be filled, but Goligoski is really going to make a big difference on this team. You could already see the difference against New Jersey.

As far as Richards: He’s not being traded. That concussion is really going to mess things up, but even without it I doubt Nieuwendyk wanted to trade him. He wants to sign him long-term and he’s willing to take that risk of keeping him.

fair enough. do they try and swing a guy like Daley for a more stay at home type or look to the development route?

we have the opposite problem as we can develop stay at home shutdown guys but no puck movers, lol.

by Michael Gleich on Feb 24, 2011 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

Stars have Philip Larsen waiting, who is another offensive guy.

I doubt they want to move Daley. They really like him and just signed him to a six-year extension, for $3.3M a year, a few months ago and after signing that contract he’s only gotten better.

I’d be interested to see what he’d be willing to move, but personally I think they’ll wait it out and try to sign that guy this summer. If they have new owners and they sign Richards, then they have room to get a defenseman. Before Goligoski, the Stars had the lowest-paid defensive group in the NHL. So there’s room there.

I think they may take a chance on a guy like Craig Rivet on re-entry waivers. Possibly. Who knows.

This whole thing is laughable.

Joe knows - if he even did ask for this in the first place — that he isn’t getting this return in a trade. But when he says it’s going to take an astronomical trade to net Richards, he apparently means it.

What’s interesting is that he’s denied ever asking for any specific player in the first place.

We should definitely not trade for Richards. And honeslty….I m not even sure if I want Richards once he hits free agency, unless its like a 3 year contract or something. He is gonna be 31 once the season starts and I can see him playing well for maybe 3 seasons or so, but then he will start declining. And my guess is that he will be asking for at least 5 years and same money or more then he is making now…..might not be worth it

Stasny

Watched a lot of him when I lived in Denver, on both DU and the AVs. One of my favorite players. He would look great in Blue and in my opinion a much better guy to get than Richards. Only problem is that the AVs paid him too much too soon. I would have to see the details but I don’t think I’d be against sending Gabby the other way.

Sather would be nuts to give up any one of Staal, Dubi or Step for Richards, let alone all three.

As for the possible Stastny deal, AA plus MDZ or a #1 for him seems fair. Giving up all three is too much. I think we are way too down on MDZ right now. He is only 20 and still has excellent potential. If the Avs want all three, they need to give us another good player back.

Richards

Aren’t the Rangers bidding against themselves if they try to get Richards? Who else is going to try to trade for him? To be honest I don’t think the Rangers are about to win the cup with Richards, so what’s the point in getting him now? Keep him away from free agency? Would you rather have Richards, or Del Zotto, the draft pick, and whichever other player for the future?

If the Stars re-sign him, fine. If another team signs him, fine. I’d be disapppointed like the rest of you, but I would much rather have Del Zotto, whichever player they draft, and whichever other player would need to be involved for the next bunch of years than Richards, honestly.

Who knows, maybe the Rangers even get him in free agency.

At this point, I really hope the Rangers don’t trade for Richards.

Since someone mentioned it before

Here is the blurb from the Denver Post:

Colorado coach Joe Sacco wasn’t made available to the media today, but the team said that Stastny, Hejduk, Jones, Johnson and Liles all didn’t practice because of “maintenance” days, which isn’t unusual, especially when a team is practicing again the next day.

However, with Monday’s trade deadline approaching, any absences can trigger speculation. But the team, in this case, said not to read too much into the off days for those players.

Who the hell knows. The team seems to have done well letting other players develop and adjust themselves, whereas they’ve taken a stick to MDZ.

Depends on the ransom. Keep in mind that teams seems to be overspending to acquire (or keep, in Byfuglien’s case) offensive D-men this deadline, so he might be able to fetch more than typical.

For instance, I like the kid, but it’s a no-brainer to give him up for a 25 year old #1 center that’s locked up for 3 more years.

It started with Anderson for Elliot…then Stewart/Captain Kirk for EJ (that one baffles me still). They had a young up-and-coming team and seem to just be panicking.

They're not very good.

They weren’t very good last year, and rode a super-hot goaltender all season long and into the playoffs.

Anderson came back to earth, and they got exposed. The funny part is they might be better this year than last year, despite the record difference.

I think they fall somewhere between the team that got them the pick for Duchene and their team last year. That being said, I thought a core on offense of Stastny/Duchene/Stewart was pretty damn good. I’m a firm believer in building up the middle on offense, so I wonder if they hold onto Stastny afterall, much the same way I think the Kings hold onto Schenn no matter what.

The players we did get helped us in the playoffs, but we payed a heavy price by getting rid of Gartner, Amonte, Marchant and prior to that James Patrick, Darren Turcotte and Doug Weight. But we would have given up nothing to get Kovalev and he would have done just as much if not more as MacTavish, Anderson, Noonan and Matteau

Or is Gilroy, Eminger and Christensen a good enough package?

Not even close

Two players the Rangers are trying to get rid of and a good player that’s a restricted free agent at the end of the year does not equal an all star.

I am having a pretty good laugh at the garbage Larry Brooks is reporting right now. Not sure where he gets this stuff from but for what its worth here is some generic info from a friend who works for MSG (but to be clear not directly with Sather or anyone involved in personnel) The office talk is YES Sather has had a conversation with Joe N. from Dallas about Richards NO player names were discussed as of yet (Sather was asking about his health and possible return .. thats pretty much it for now) No talk about renting Bryan McCabe as far as anyone knows and a call was made to Edmonton by Sather (no more details about that … hoping it was about Penner though)

I have been an advocate of getting Richards for the longest time and have made that clear on this board since early Jan. HOWEVER, the guy has a concussion and would be of limited value down the stretch and is not worth anything other than a high draft pick at this point. Let him get healthy and try and sign him in the offseason .. he is useless to us right now.

Bryan McCabe is old, slow and a defensive liability. Has a good shot on PP .. thats it… pass

Dustin Penner would provide size, grit and scoring on the wing and fits this team well.

Send MDZ down, play Eminger and get Penner … thats it for now

I wouldn’t put AA in the same class as Prust or EC in terms of offensive production. AA’s production has climbed dramatically from last year, he has it in him to be a 60 point player.

AA is on pace for 42 points. last year he had 28. hes on the up and i can easily see him putting up 20 goals and 55-60 points next year. hes got the size and talent.

i think most teams would take him on their third line
