Marc Staal will miss tonight's game, ending his streak at 247 games played. Ruslan Fedotenko will return to the lineup tonight. Kris "Lobster" Newbury has been placed on waivers so the Rangers can return him to the AHL if they want to.

I know dbmaven was asking around on twitter…anyone know why Newbury needs waivers all of a sudden?

Good question.

Contrary to what some believe, I like how Newbury plays. He plays gritty with an edge. He can hit, fight, win F/O’s, and he plays with heart. Although others don’t see it, he is another Avery / Prust type player. I do not see how another team would not take him. If he stopped taking stupid penalties at the wrong time, he might get more attention.

by nathansfamous on Feb 25, 2011 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

I think I figured it out

Capgeek says he’s been on the NHL roster for 28 days (see their daily tracker).

Once a player passes 30 cumulative days on the roster, or plays in 10 games, he has to pass through waivers again.

While they could send him down now without subjecting him to waivers right now, it’s possible they’re preparing to send him down on Monday, which would exceed the 30 day limit and require keeping him on the roster for 48 hours while waivers clear. By doing it now, there will be no waiting period.

I thought it might be related to ‘30 days’ in some way, but I couldn’t figure out a what, how or why. That makes sense. Thanks.

McDonagh and Girardi will be the top pair for the Rangers tonight.

If it were McDonagh for Gomez straight up we won that trade.

by CrazyRangerFan on Feb 25, 2011 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

if you look deeper it was Gaborik and McD for Gomez and Higgins. If you look even deeper than that it was Gaborik McD and prust for Gomez

lol, yeah in a sense, I knew he did it to sign Gabs.

Me too, I am excited to see how he handles Ovechkin line.

By the way… wouldn’t you fucking know it… Backstrom is back from his thumb injury tonight for Washington. Mike Green still likely out with the flu. They get their top line center back though (of course).

sitting Backstrom out on one of my FHL teams…..we have played him very well this year.
got Thornton and Getzlaf rolling tonight, so hopefully this will be a good move…

but i get your point…….let’s not let him be that guy (i.e. Datsyuk)

It says a lot about MCD to be move up to first D pair. If he keeps up his pace of development, the sky is the limit.

Make us proud McD

I’ve started calling you Staal Jr, this is your first big test.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Feb 25, 2011 1:34 PM EST reply actions

Washington gets back Backstrom and Green tonight, per ESPN.

This will be a challenge, but McD has been impressive and should hold up. Looking forward to the Prust Boyle Fedetenko line being back again.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Feb 25, 2011 1:39 PM EST reply actions

Already brought it up but yes it should be a big test for McD.

Glad we get to see Eminger again to see if he can wrestle a roster spot away from Gilroy or even MDZ. Hope we get to see Prust Boyle Fedotenko tonight.

and the other line would be Avery Prospal Christensen I assume?

by CrazyRangerFan on Feb 25, 2011 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

Getting Fedo back is good. Containing 8 wihtout Staal will be problematic methinks.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 25, 2011 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

I'll be rooting for Eminger.

I know the reasoning behind playing Del Zotto over him, but I still think Eminger should be in for his solid defense through the first half of the season.

by Chris McShane on Feb 25, 2011 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Is that reasoning that Del Zotto is a better player now

and in the future?

Because he is. Eminger is nice. He is what he is, the last guy on the roster

by dar9898 on Feb 25, 2011 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

well in the future mdz will be better.

but right now, id give the edge to eminger

When it comes to playing defense, I completely disagree.

I wrote a FanPost about the whole thing a couple weeks back and got some good responses from those who favored Del Zotto’s playing time. I just don’t think he belongs in the NHL right now. Watching him constantly cough up the puck or pass it to the opposing team near the net this year has been frustrating.

Just wait

until Callahan becomes the Rangers’ next Chris Drury

by dar9898 on Feb 25, 2011 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

isn’t callahan a bit old to win the LLWS?

And a bit too young to decline rapidly

But his career matches up pretty well with Drury so far and his physical attributes and skill set are similar. If he stays with the Rangers, we’ll see how kind fans are to a native son visibly declining after his prime. Then we can compare that with how they responded to a similar player several years before.

by dar9898 on Feb 25, 2011 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

there's a difference though

callahan isn’t coming in after he beat us in the playoffs the years before and signed a big cap strangling contract that fans will see as a major black hole on why the team hasnt been as successful

This! Rangers have a bad history of rushing after guys who play well against us in big spots assuming they will repeat that for us. Nathan Lafayette anyone?

by DieselCane22 on Feb 25, 2011 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

But Drury is a collosal failure here. We need to be rid of him next year no matter what. I don’t want to Redden him but I don’t know any other way. He’s a class guy and a great teammate but he basically can’t play anymore. He has to be gone for this team to completely move forward.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 25, 2011 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t want to Redden him but I don’t know any other way

You can’t Redden him, his NMC means he’s not going to Hartford. The other way you’re looking for is one of three:

a) he retires on his own
b) they “force” him to retire
c) they buy out his deal.

Those are the options. Who knows if any of them will happen.

how does an organization

“force” a player to retire…it seems kind of cheap and makes the organization looks petty

Agreed but you can’t allow total dead weight to be on the team either. Hopefully it’s a buyout to me thats the most amicable but it HAS to happen. Or they get creative somehow, can you take his salary off the books without him retiring if he agrees to go to Hartford but not actually play or he coaches or personal services? something of that nature? They need to get creative around the CBA if they can.

those were through injury purposes

those guys were really beat up and couldn’t physically compete…while drury may have seen a rapid decline in his play you cant really go to him and say “maybe its time to hang it up, you can’t do it anymore and we need the cap room”

technically

those guys claimed they could still compete. their teams denied it.

by dar9898 on Feb 25, 2011 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

well

all athletes will say that they can still compete but those three had major injuries and they were convinced. If drury had a greater concussion history or some real bad knee problems (which he may I don’t know the extent of his knee surgery) then i think its more probable for the team to force him out

I don’t think Callahan’s perceived value will ever be at the height of Drury’s though. Drury had a lot go right for him in his career, the Calder, scoring a bunch of game winners in the playoffs on a stacked Avs team, having a couple of career years in Buffalo that offset his exile to Calgary. Cally is obviously adored by the Rangers fanbase and probably thought of highly for his specific role around the league, but I doubt he ever gets the type of money that Drury was offered.
