Saturday Night Special: Quick Hits, Uneducated Speculation

WASHINGTON DC - FEBRUARY 25: Brian Boyle #22 of the New York Rangers controls the puck in front of John Carlson #74 of the Washington Capitals during the first period at the Verizon Center on February 25 2011 in Washington DC. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images)

My wife is out of town this weekend, so I've been on Daddy duty all day, did I miss anything?

Kidding. Love the trade, another "no-brainer" for the Rangers. Glen Copperfield does it again. Nick will have a full breakdown and analysis of the deal in the morning, and then I'm sure we'll be talking about it in the game thread during tomorrow's game.

Tomorrow's game is on MSG, and both the Tampa feed and MSG feed will be available on NHL Center Ice.

Good news on the Derek Stepan front, he was fined but not suspended by the NHL (Ranger Rants)

Derek Stepan was somewhat relieved to learn today he has been fined an undisclosed amount for his shoulder-to-face hit on Mike Green in last night’s 6-0 win at Washington but not suspended.

Ruslan Fedetenko and Marc Staal are also sitting out tomorrow.

A couple of the beat guys have said that Glen Sather will not be speaking to the media tonight, as he often does after trades. That tells me he isn't done dealing, and Jesse Spector says Sather is going full bore after Brad Richards. Rumors about Michael Del Zotto and Evgeny Grachev as the main pieces of the deal. Stay tuned, it's going to be an interesting 48 hours.

Is it possible to be sick of Brad Richards before he even comes here?

Have a good night kids, see you tomorrow.

[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 02/26/11 8:03 PM EST According to AHL Transactions, Del Zotto has been returned to Connecticut.

I've suggested this before

But given our FA history, I like the idea of giving something up to get a test drive on Richards. Let him finish the season, hopefully see if he’s enough to get Gabby back on track, and make sure it’s gonna work. Then, lock him up in the offseason when we know it will work. It’s not like we’re the Isles or the Oilers – playing in a crappy arena in the middle of nowhere, where we have to have to worry that no amount of money will keep him here. If it’s a good fit for both sides, I don’t think we’ll have a problem locking him up.

We’ve got ALOT of prospects in the system. They’re not all gonna make it to Broadway – this seems like a great way to use a couple of them to fill a big hole.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 26, 2011 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

MDZ doesnt make sense in a Richards trade

they just traded for goligoski who fills the same role as MDZ. they’d need to replace Richards, so a young center makes sense. The Stars would probably start with Stepan and settle for Anisimov.

Good Point

I wasn’t saying it HAD to be MDZ, just that I have no problem giving up a couple of our mess of prospects for the chance to make sure Richards works before we give him a big offseason contract. I’ve been for including AA or Step in any Richards deal. If Richards is our #1, one of Step and AA are gonna be stuck in a 3rd line roll. It’s a nice luxury to have, but not worth holding up the deal over – especially if we’re thinking of bringing back Boyle too. I agree Step is the guy we should hold on to.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 26, 2011 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

Step can move to wing, there’s nothing that says either Step or AA becomes expendable. In fact, if Step is going to win 35% of his faceoffs, he should be on the wing.

I expect him to improve on the dots

he’s very responsible defensively and is fully capable of being a very good two way center.

See John

that’s where I would have to disagree with you. Gologoski is close to a upper tier d-man. MDZ… mmm me no think so. He will get there and any team will take two good young defensmen these days, just saying. Now, I have a feeling its going to come down to MDZ and AA or Grachev, which I dont mind, bur thats just me.

Why do people think we need a "test drive" on Richards?

The guy has maintained a relationship with Tortorella since they parted ways.
He won a Stanley Cup with Torts as the coach.
He’s had a fabulous season – and the guys he’s been playing with aren’t as talented as Marian Gaborik. There’s no question he’s a 1st line center – no doubt whatsoever.

Giving up anything at all to get him for 2 months is quite frankly the height of folly. Wait for July 1 and get him then. If he really wants to be here, the deal will get done.

by dbmaven on Feb 26, 2011 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

What the hell is the point of paying through the dick for a rental player when there’s no chance of this team making an impact on the playoffs, especially since he and Gaborik are having concussion issues which is by far the most inconsistent and difficult injury to predict?

Or, as I’ve seen others state, it’s just a smoke-screen to be saying they’re going after Richards so that they can work on another deal.

I hate trading for rentals. Unless he signs a contract extension the trade in my opinion is an automatic loss. Even with the extension I wouldn’t want to give up a Stepan, MDZ, etc type of player. I just don’t think he’s that essential to the Rangers winning a Cup.

by dbmaven on Feb 26, 2011 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

Why give up anything for Richards?

This team isn’t going to the finals with or without Richards. I don’t understand why you give up anything when he’ll be a FA this summer. If he wants to be a Ranger he’ll sign here (you know Sather will back up the Brinks truck). Maybe Sather is getting pressure from Dolan to make the playoffs, he certainly interjected himself in the Melo trade. MDZ is a coveted asset, every team that deals with the Rangers ask for him. Why give him up for anything other than a player of equal upside and age (Stastny), sweetening the pot with 1st round pick and Grachev and Gilroy. Grachev is playing much better the last two-three months, but is expendable given Hagelin and possibly Kreider in the fold for next year. If you held a gun to my head I’d sign off on Grachev and a 1st for Richards, based on weak draft and extra 2nd. BTW- Slats moving Sanguinetti for a 2nd is filthy, Bobby Sags is in the ECHL now, banished from the AHL.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Feb 26, 2011 8:21 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Dolan wouldn't know Richards if he was front row at a JD & the Straight shots show

Richards is a smoke screen to steal Stastny from the all of a sudden completely inept Colorado front office. Statsny will be so perfect in NYC. Avs will choke when Slats says he’ll trade for Richards instead & that’s where AA will go.
If if if we do end up with Richards, I’d bet it would be that extra 2nd rd pick conditionally if he resigns maybe a #1

No way we’re paying the price unless we’re in it for the long haul. We’ll have the exclusive singing period this summer to get it done before anyone else can get involved. He will replace AA with consistency, leadership & better #‘s.

For the final pair we’ll have Gilroy, Tank, Eminger, Mccabe, McIllrath to choose from &that’s not including any other FA’s or prospects stepping up. I hate to see MDZ go but i think it’s clearly a risk/reward world at the trade deadline.

Actually that includes 2 free agents. McCabe, Gilroy.

Unless the Stars extend Richards before he becomes a free agent I don’t see how it benefits the Rangers to acquire Richards now for a future great defenseman and Anisimov right now. I love this team, but they aren’t about to win the cup with Richards.

by voice22 on Feb 26, 2011 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

I'm with you...

I don’t see where all of this patience for MDZ comes from. Everyone seems so certain he is going to become a phenomenal defenseman, but I don’t see it. He just lacks that hunger to succeed that you see with other fresh d-men like sauer and mickey D. I also think Richards has a lot more to offer this team. The Rangers are really hurting for a true center like Richards. I see a lot of people saying that they dont see how he will make the difference on this team…
How many one goal games have we let slip away? How many low scoring games have we been a part of lately? The Rangers work hard offensively but they simply lack the talent that Richards could bring to this team. In my opinion, this guy could be the difference in those games. This guy could be the one who consistently puts pucks on sticks when it would be difficult not to score. Look at last nights game for example…Christensen’s goals very uncharacteristic of the Rangers. Beautiful passes that Christensen would have had to been asleep on not to put home. Now if passing like that WAS characteristic of this team….think of the possibilities.

by NYRGrady on Feb 26, 2011 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

yeah i dont understand the patience for MDZ either. its not like MDZ is 20 years old or anything. oh wait….

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 27, 2011 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

Sure, he's young...

…but his game just does not show promise. He just lacks the character… Everyone keeps worrying about his confidence after being sent to Hartford. Are poor MDZ’s feelings getting hurt? If anything, that should make him want it more! He should be playing as if he were possessed! Instead, he’s playing like a five year old who got his hands slapped by dad. He looks disoriented, out of place, and certainly not like a future star d-man.

by NYRGrady on Feb 27, 2011 12:47 AM EST up reply actions

if you give up on 20 year old guys that easily then youd never have a successful franchise. whine about how they always trade away their young guys way for overpriced over-the-hill vets but then when they do commit to youth nobody is willing to take the bumps that come along with it

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 27, 2011 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

okay...

Call me crazy…but even with richards, the rangers would still be a pretty young team with plenty of prospects coming up. They need some consistent offense, and this guy is natural enough to give it to them so long as he stays healthy. It is a void that they have needed to fill, and i wouldn’t fault sather for doing it at the expense of MDZ. If MDZ were to go, would we have a huge gap to fill? Would we be short on prospects and future stars? Would we be an old team or a franchise just trying to make things right for this year, ignoring the future? The answer to all of those questions is “no”.

by NYRGrady on Feb 27, 2011 1:07 AM EST up reply actions

we can’t just keep all 20 year olds because they might be something one day. like grady says, he hasn’t shown signs of being a future all star…if he did, that would be a different story and, yea, it would be too soon to “give up” on him.

by voice22 on Feb 27, 2011 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

wow didnt know we only gave them til they were 20 to show they have what it takes to be an all star. look at florida and what happened with michael grabner

and yes he has shown signs of being an all star one day btw

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 27, 2011 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

True

Plenty of young guys are showing that the Rangers have made a wise decision in investing in their youth. Unfortunately, not every one of these kids is going to flourish, so the Rangers need to be wary of putting to much faith in the youth. There are those that show promise, and there are those that don’t. We can’t be such slaves to the “commit to the youth” philosophy that we fail to weed out the weak ones. Del Zotto is wavering under the pressure, and it is not a good sign. I think the only thing he is showing signs of is that he will be perpetually unreliable…playing fantastic in some games…and costing us the rest.

by NYRGrady on Feb 27, 2011 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

i dont think you realize just how difficult it is for a 20 year old defenseman to play in the NHL

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 27, 2011 1:23 AM EST up reply actions

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 27, 2011 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

we have had patience with him. look, every draft year 30 teams pick up 20-something year old kids in the first four rounds…that’s like 600 kids under 24 years old. meanwhile, nhl hockey goes on all the time with teams competing for the cup. the question is, what makes you think that MDZ is the next leetch or Hall of Famer? We have depth right now to shake up our team. Mess was over 30 when he came to New York lets not forget.

by voice22 on Feb 27, 2011 1:22 AM EST up reply actions

how many 20 year old defensemen are in the NHL? 95% of them would be doing just as bad as MDZ is

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 27, 2011 1:26 AM EST up reply actions

i'm sure its tough...

…but his time in the NHL is shaping him. Perhaps he could have become something better, and maybe (just maybe) he still has that potential. But like everyone keeps saying…his confidence is hurting. Even more importantly, he doesn’t appear to be rising up to the challenge. If he were playing hungry, and made some mistakes I wouldn’t fault him. But he’s not…If MDZ has a bright future anywhere, it is probably in hartford.

confidence isnt the hardest thing to correct. and u cant say he doesnt want it because u see how distraught he is on the bench sometimes. he will be an NHL all star one day. book it

its totally worth it...

when people say that we are building for the future, I hope they do not mean past the end of richards career. this guy could be a cornerstone of a cup-worthy team in the next couple of years. Based on what we have seen from MDZ, waiting on him is a gamble…it seems more likely that he is destined to do the following: play fantastic in some games, but cost us the rest of them. No thanks. As far as putting Richards at number one center?…no brainer…

how do you know mdz doesnt have the drive?

do you talk to him? are you friendly with him? you have no idea. how many nhl defensemen are successful at 20 years old??

just look at tyler myers this year. hes awful. maybe buffalo should give up on him too. your giving up waaaaay to easily.

Myers has been anything but awful this year. He hasn’t been as good as last year overall, he’s still a healthy step above alot of d-men in the league.

Does anyone really think AA is going to be a Richards

No, I don’t think AA is going to be a 90 point center in his prime.

I do think 3 years from now they’ll probably give you the same production, with one on his way up, and one on his way down.

Who do you think is going to be better in 3 years, Stepan or AA? Because the other one is going to be a 2nd liner with less production.

but look, I like Anisimov, don’t get me wrong.

by voice22 on Feb 27, 2011 1:10 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed, Steps’ likely got the higher ceiling right now, given age and production this year. They could quite easily be 1a and 1b though.

Keep in mind, 2nd liner doesn’t necessarily mean drastically less production. RIbiero, the 2nd liner to Richards, has only 10 fewer points over the last 5 years, PPG .96 to PPG .86.

But where do they both play until then

While Richards, Step, AA, Boyle seems like a nice luxury to have, it’s not practical. If Richards is coming on, it seems like you make your pick of Step or AA for the second line, re-sign Boyle for third line duty, and make due with a cheap 4th line center – EC is under contract, Newbury showed he can hold his own their, and we still have another year of Colony Pizza Employee of the Month.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 27, 2011 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

Step and Boyle can both play wing. Richards can too for that matter, but you don’t sign him to move him.

I understand the reality, I’m just rejecting it and creating my own.

One potential risk is that if, say, Los Angeles signed Richards, he could be swayed to sign an extension with them before the end of the season and then we will totally miss out. Richards is 30 but injury aside is having a career year. He is great.

Stastny would obviously be a better deal, but unfortunately I have a feeling it is not going to happen.

Btw, if you missed it, Peter Stastny said this 3 days ago after the Avs trade:

"This young team was ready to challenge, almost, for a Stanley Cup this season. They were so good. All they needed was some more chemistry, and some synergies. Instead, they destroyed the team. I mean, that was a one-way deal. Mr. Armstrong will look like a genius. I don’t know what they were thinking in the Colorado organization. I should not have said this, but I’m so, so mad what they’ve done to this team. They’ve moved the team about two to three years back again

Maybe he will convince his son to push for a trade! (wishful thinking)

I'd rather have Stastny

There have been five members of the Stastny family in the NHL and the Rangers have never had any of them. I must have a Stastny on my team so I can die in peace. Plus imagine the chemistry between Gaborik, the best Slovakian in the NHL, and Paul Stastny, the son of the greatest Slovakian player of all time!

Stastny or Richards

Besides the fact that he has NY at the end of his name why wouldn’t any New York Ranger fan love this American SOB. He plays a solid two way game and is a playmaker through and through, and can find the back of the net. My skepticism would be at 6.6 million for 3 years is a hefty price for a guy that has yet to break the 80pt mark yet in his 4 year career.

On the flip side, Richards has and he will be worth signing for four years(barring his concussion). Stastny or Richards’ existence would phase AA out anyway, so my gut would say if we need to move AA, than so be it. Stepan is the second line center right now in his first year and has more goals than AA , imagine what he will be in 2 years or even the next. AA becomes expendable because he needs minutes to prove his worth. If we get one of these stud centers that just takes away from AA in my opinion. I like Stastny better but the fact that you guys want to avoid Richards is laughable, he is not Gomez, Redden or Drury, he is really good. If this thing happens either way we will be fine.

by louielounz1 on Feb 27, 2011 12:11 AM EST reply actions

Stastny is worth more than richards to us

He is 25 and a proven 70 point scorer (He had 79 points one season) he is about to enter his prime no question he will be an 80+ point player especially if he can connect with Gabby who is a 80+ point player. It would be our top 5 pairing to compete with the Sedin twins and that crazy good Midget and Stamkos in Florida. Again he is 25 and scores 70+ points. Only shitty part about his contract is that it doesnt lock him up till he is 30. Also I dont know if people have grand illusions that Richards is going to come here for 5-6 million but he is not. He is a 7.5-8 million dollar contract for a player who is past prime and going to enter the declining part of his career. He is a red flag to me.

by Pballer505 on Feb 27, 2011 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

I prefer Stastny also, but it is pretty hard to say that Richards is “past” his prime when last year he tied his career high in points and this year he was on track to pass that before his injury. You are right about price though, the lowest and shortest we could probably do would be 4 years at $30m.

Unfortunately, we are talking about this as if Sather was in the driver’s seat, when he is not. This is a choice that will be made for us, because it is likely that Stastny’s availability has been overstated and it will be Richards or bust, for us.

by BigB22 on Feb 27, 2011 12:39 AM EST up reply actions

it is likely that Stastny’s availability has been overstated

and this may be understated… there’s absolutely zero official indication that he’s available – and here we are all acting like he’s almost on his way. If we get Stastny, I’d be ecstatic, but I just don’t see him moving.

Great post

+1000

First off, I really like AA a lot. But the fact is, Stepan is better than AA. If you think about it, either one of them probably needs 2 additional years as a 2nd line center before being able to be a #1 center. So should we have no #1 center for the next 2 years? Who can they learn under? Stepan can be a second line center for 3-4 years under Statsny or more likely Richards. We are doing AA no favors then, keeping him on the 3rd line for the next few years.

Next up, MDZ. I like him also and do think it is too early to give up on him – he has great potential. But let’s look at it another way. Rather than what he or Richards add by being on the Rangers, what do we lose in the future by not having each? By not having MDZ, we miss out on a potential Leetch-like player. Without him, we have Staal-Girardi, McD-Sauer, Valetenko- young gun to be determined. Even with uncertainty around the 6th man, that is a defensive squad that is going to rock the next 5 years. What do we have without Richards/Stastny? We have the same situation we are stuck with right now, no playmaking #1 center, nobody making beautiful passes to set-up Gabby, or other finishers on the PP.

The big question though is whether there is any reason to do this now, rather than July. In July, we can keep all those pieces plus have Richards, but there is the risk he signs elsewhere, especially at whatever team rents him. And Stastny could only be signed now, obviously.

Appreciated

And to answer your last question, I would say look at the Carmelo Anthony situation or Cliff Lee for that matter. Instead of the Yankees trading their prospect for Lee when they had the chance, they chose to stand pat and wait until the offseason. Well, bad move because not only did they lose that year, but they lost to the Phillies when the wooing began. The Knicks on the other hand probably could have gotten Melo in the offseason had the current CBA not F-ed everything up. It basically forced them to make a deal now and ensure that he was a Knick. With Sather…and you know Sather, he is great at trades and sucks at signings. He will go into a bidding war for him. I dont think he wants to do that. It’s just a lot safer to go this route now.

by louielounz1 on Feb 27, 2011 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

Lets be honest

We have a lot of spare parts. Would it really hurt us to give up some of these extra parts.. MDZ, Grech, AA or Gilroy to add a 1st line center of all-star caliber? For Dallas to let him slip away into Free Agency with nothing in return is crazy thinking, they will do their best to resign him before anyone gets thier best player for free. I’m all for it, Not only would we get a serious force alone he could really make our precious gabby better.

Pierre Lebrun on the timetable for a Brad Richards trade

“A source close to the situation figured this will be a Monday trade, if there’s a move at all. The Stars won their second straight game Saturday and are very much alive in the West playoff race. GM Joe Nieuwendyk may look at what he’s being offered Monday and decide that keeping Richards is a better investment for his team’s playoff run, even if that means losing him for nothing July 1. The Stars have not yet gone to Richards with any offers, but it will have to happen soon, possibly Sunday night.”

Hope they hang onto him or trade him to someone else.
