Rangers Analysis: McCabe a Key Piece to Rangers' Playoff Puzzle
On Saturday the New York Rangers acquired 35-year-old defenseman Bryan McCabe from the Florida Panthers. The veteran blue-liner was a target of GM Glen Sather's for at least a month leading up to the deadline, as he felt the Blueshirts' young and inexperienced defensive corps was lacking something - something that McCabe would instantly add to the lineup and help this team in their push to the playoffs. The move was not necessary and I think I have made that quite clear over the past few days. However, Sather obviously wants more out of this season than just youth development. He wants to do some damage in the playoffs and he wants to make a run for it all. McCabe is one step forward in that direction.
Before being traded to the Rangers, McCabe played 48 games with the Florida Panthers this season. In that time he recorded five goals and seventeen assists for a total of 22 points, and also was a plus-3 rating. He averaged between 21 and 22 minutes of ice time per game with the Panthers, which is about what Ryan McDonagh is getting now-a-days on the Rangers. I make that comparison because it likely means McCabe will assume a spot on the second defensive pairing here in New York. Factor in some time on the powerplay and Bryan may even see his minutes go up while playing under head coach John Tortorella.
McCabe is essentially a rental, as his current contract will expire this coming July when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. He actually began his career as a member of the New York Islanders in the mid-90s, and over the years has made his way to the Canucks, Blackhawks, Maple Leafs, and Panthers. But for now he will call New York home for the time being, and hopefully he will make the stay worthwhile.
One part of his game that has been a mainstay on all of the teams listed above has been leadership. In fact, he was named captain of the Florida Panthers after only his first season there. He was well respected by the younger players and was looked upon as a role model and a mentor. In addition to adding other things to this Rangers lineup - which we will get to in a minute - he is going to be a great guy to have around in the locker room for players like Ryan McDonagh and Michael Sauer. I wouldn't even be surprised if Marc Staal and Dan Girardi quickly develop a bonding relationship with Bryan as well.
Now to discuss how McCabe will contribute on the ice.First and foremost, coach Tortorella is most definitely going to use the Ontario native at the point on the powerplay. That's one of the aforementioned things that Glen Sather felt was lacking on this team, but McCabe will in fact be a threat with the man advantage. He has a hard shot that he knows how to get to the net through traffic, and based on the high number of assists he's tallied throughout his career, I think it's safe to say he knows how to move the puck around on the powerplay as well. Of course he will have to adjust to "Tortorella's powerplay", but the foundation skill is already there.
That's another positive about McCabe; he will not have to be taught much at all. See with guys like McDonagh and Sauer, being that they are in their rookie year, there is a lot of coaching going on during practice and even during games. That will not have to be the case for McCabe, as he will simply be expected to go out there and perform. I know he hasn't played a single game with the Rangers just yet, but the expectations will be extremely high from day one, which will most likely be this afternoon versus the Lightning.
As far as McCabe's play in the defensive zone goes, he is no Nik Lidstrom or Chris Pronger, that's for sure. At the same time, though, he is not going to be costing the Rangers goals either. He will get the job done in front of Henrik Lundqvist just fine, and that of course is in addition to contributing offensively as well. What I like about McCabe is that he plays with grit and with his heart on his sleeve. He'll protect Lundqvist and will even drop the gloves if he has to. In my opinion, you can never have enough of those types of players on one team.
Taking all of this into consideration, getting McCabe for Tim Kennedy and a third-round draft pick was an absolute steal by Glen Sather. Bryan will make this team stronger than they already are in more than just one area of the game. He's going to be a key asset in the Rangers' push towards the playoffs, and quite honestly, out of all the options out there to fill that role, he was probably the Blueshirts' best considering the cost. Hats off to Glen on this one.
Something tells me that Sather is not quite done just yet, though. As I said in the opening paragraph, the general manager has made it clear he wants to go far in the playoffs based on this acquisition alone, but McCabe only quenches one of the Rangers' many thirsts. There's still that high-scoring centerman that has yet to be brought here to New York, and with $3.8 million in cap room to play with after this trade, Sather is going to pursue all options before 3 p.m. on Monday.

That photo of McCabe is begging for someone to put a face in the way of that fist.

I think you hit the nail flush on the head here Nick, wonderful analysis of who McCabe is and what he can bring to the team. I am sure he will be anxious in his first game as a Ranger but there is a lot to like about what he can bring to the club. The biggest things for me are his shot, his leadership, and his toughness. He will protect his teammates, he will shoot bombs from the point, and he will be a great mentor to the pups we have on the blueline.
I also don’t think that Slats is done… unless there is a great blockbuster in the works that he is keeping hidden in a cloud of cigar smoke and trying to screw another GM, I hope that it is just a small deal that adds a good complimentary piece to the team.
I was joking about this with you on twitter before the McCabe trade was official… I wonder what number he is going to wear. ;)

Yeah I think it was confirmed he’s wearing #28. I agree that toughness is one of the most important things he brings to the team and I think that’s being forgotten by a lot of fans because they are only concerned about what he will do on the powerplay. He has a lot more to add than just a big shot.

I was saying on twitter that he should be sitting between McDonagh and Sauer. Imagine what lessons and experience he could share with those two?

Spot on.
I think this move gives them a chance to move up to the 5 seed. Even though they both won last night, Washington and Montreal aren’t lighting it up and if McCabe delivers even a little on the pp this could be a 95+ point team IMO.

The players say that their goal is home ice advantage, which means they would have to reach the four seed. I honestly can’t see that happening, but the 5th would be nice too.

I wrote a piece a while back as how I don’t see the Rangers contending for the next few years. I still stand by that we still are not ‘official’ contenders, I do like our chances better today.
You are spot on with what McCabe will bring. I think we just got better defensively, better offensively from the back line, better on the PP, better on experience and leadership in the room, better overall team toughness…Plus MDZ gets to back to where he needs to be and should have been for quite some time now.
Look at these stats….
Rangers rank 2nd in the league in hits
Tied for 2ndin shorthanded goals
Rank 7th in penalty killing
3rd in blocked shots
Tied for 6th in goals against
4th in road wins
Rank 8th with a plus-23 goal differential **** I think this is a big one to take notice of.
17 different players credited with at least one game winning goal this season, which is the most in the NHL.
5th in the NHL with 17 wins in one-goal games
1st in points when trailing after 2 periods.
Tied for 1st in wins when trailing after 2 periods.
That my friend, is a team that can play playoff hockey and win.
Then add these…
6th youngest team in the league
1st youngest defensive corp in the league (though that might be before McCabe)
…and the future looks bright!!

Totally agree with all of your assesments. When the season started I would have been satisfied with a team of young hard working players who made progress and maybe contended for a final spot. This team has done so much more than that. I think with this trade we can really do some damage in the playoffs and still have our young players grow and learn and really solidify our future.
Excellent analysis. The Rangers have definitely accomplished A LOT for one of the youngest teams in the NHL. It’s been some year, I’ll give you that.

But the addition of MacCabe does not turn us into a contender. I think he will help our PP but in reality Florida’s PP was dismal with him on it. If Gabby was here and if we even had Richards and maybe a few more pieces of the puzzle in place, this might make real sense. But as is, we got a rental defenseman who we’ve coveted, who must be resigned on the offseason at 35yrs old and we really are not quite ready for a serious cup run. I know we got him for nothing, should we have?
Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.
I know we got him for nothing, should we have?
Even forgetting about the playoffs for a second, we had a 3rd pair that Torts trusted so little that he’d been running our top 4 in to the ground, with Staal/Girardi getting 25+ and Sauer/McD getting like 20. This will ease some of their burden.

You forgot Hank leads the NHL in shutouts with 8. Although I like your enthusiam, I think the trade for McCabe basically guarantees we will finish somewhere 5-8th. But I don’t think it makes us much more a contender than we were yesterday. Look at the record for all of 2011 or since the all-star break. Wildly inconsistent. Can we really beat the Flyers or Penguins (when/if they are healthy). I don’t understand why a trade for Richards is even on the table?? He is coming back from a concussion which is a huge risk. Why give up a single puck for him when we can get him for nothing in July? Getting him now may not gain us a thing in the playoffs, it certainly is not going to get us a Cup in 2011. The team has finally been built correctly, why screw it up with a terrible trade, then have to overpay him in July since Sather would have to sign him to prevent him from being a “rental”? The only trade I like would be for Stastny due to all the things mentioned in other posts (age, points, tough, contract, etc) Do you guys think Avs would take Gilroy, Eminger, AA and a first rounder?
I agree with most of the article but...
I disagree that Sather made the trade just to get a rental veteran D for the playoff push. The Rangers needed a veteran defenseman to help the young guys in their development. If McCabe plays decent during the rest of the season I wouldn’t be surprised if Sather offers him a contract for 2011-12.
It is not out of the realm of possibility but he is 35 years old and was banged up this year. He probably still has a few years left in him after this season but don’t be surprised if he just turns out to be a ‘rental’ player. It would be great if he works out here enough to justify us trying to sign him again, if we can get him for a reasonable price (much less than the contract he is coming off of now) it might be worth looking into but I wouldn’t go beyond a one or maybe two year deal.

I agree....This year and a one or two year contract would be plenty....I think the days of Slats signing guys for 4 years is over
Especially because he would be 37 at the end of a two year deal… very few guys are worth keeping around when they hit that age, McCabe is good but he isn’t great.

It’s a better bet with a defenseman than it is a forward. I wouldn’t mind bringing him back for one year. Definitely not two.

I’m with you that it’s not guaranteed that he’ll be a Ranger next year. It all depends on how well he plays and what he’ll bring to the locker room. I just think that’s something Sather considered when he went for McCabe.
It’s a low risk trade so nothing is lost if it does not work out. But i definitely rather have a veteran guy on the blue line that can lead our young guys and help them in difficult situations than a guy like Gilroy. Nothing against Gilroy but I don’t see his future with the Rangers.
Don't know how much Richards will be worth the rest of the year with his concussion....Just wait til next year Slats and see how he feels...If not feeling well we can go after Jarret Stoll
Supposedly he's having better days
there’s no denying that him and Gaborik wold wreak havoc on opposing defenses.
If Sather can work out the trade, with an extension, it’s totally worth it.

Disagree completely. We don’t know how healthy he is, we don’t know how healthy Gaborik is. It’s not worth the gamble this season. Sign him in the offseason if it’s really deemed necessary, but let the kids lead the team this year.

McCabe was a no-brainer, both for the PP and his leadership. He will fit right in and it got MDZ back to Hartford so he can learn how to play pro hockey (thank God, lol). If Stastny is available, and he may be because he has 3 more years at $6.6M per, then I would send AA, MDZ, and a #1 for him. He’s 25, a #1 center, tough, locked up for 3 more years, has had 3 70+ pts already, and would fit in with this group perfectly. Don’t know if he’s available though. Logic would say no but then look at what the Avs traded for Johnson so who knows?
The Avs wanted a premier two way D because their defense was so awful. If Johnson can help improve their D and add 40-50 points a year in offense it could very well prove to be worth it. Shattenkirk while putting up impressive rookie numbers could also face a nasty regression like MDZ and the Avs got a reasonably well positioned 1st round draft pick as well.

From various tweets
McCabe will play with Eminger today.
So I’m assuming:
McD-Girardi
Gilroy-Sauer
McCabe-Eminger
Also, Del Zotto not actually sent to Hartford. Torts’ called it “just paperwork.”
