NHL Trade Deadline Open Thread III: Wideman To Capitals

WASHINGTON DC - FEBRUARY 25: Vinny Prospal #20 of the New York Rangers celebrates after scoring a goal during the third period against the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center on February 25 2011 in Washington DC. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images)

Good Afternoon Everyone:

Here is your third open thread of the day. There will be a new thread at the top of every hour, with updated information from the previous hour.

Let's try and avoid all the Fan Posts and Fan Shots about trades, so we can keep all the information to the threads.

Remember, a full recap of the day's events and more tonight on Blueshirt Banter Radio at 8 PM

Have at it kids.....

Update by Joe Fortunato:

11:47- The Washington Capitals kicked off their expected buying-spree by grabbing Dennis Wideman from the Florida Panters. The Capitals sent a 3rd round pick and Jake Hauswirth back the other way.

Richards rumor of the hour: There are people saying that the Rangers are close, there are people who are saying that the Rangers walked away and everything in between. We won't know until anything happens, so keep that in mind when you see all the rumors. Don't forget that Brad Richards is the hottest topic at this year's deadline. All we know for sure is that he would only waive his NTC for one team, and it's the Rangers.

It's noon now, so the trades will be coming in rapid-fire, make sure to keep it here for all the updates.

Staal and Callahan

are in vastly different classes. Callahan plus a blue chip prospect and 1st round pick could make sense for the Rangers

we have so many good prospects now where not going to be able to keep them all have to pick and choose now.

by Ed B 96 on Feb 28, 2011 12:15 PM EST reply actions

Chicago had to gut the team because Tallon didn’t know how to send a fax. He ended up non-tendering all of his RFAs by accident and paid a premium to keep his young players.

by caonenine on Feb 28, 2011 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

It’s hard to equate how horrible that mistake was in real-life-terms.

by Caerid112 on Feb 28, 2011 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Well, Thomas still has another year of CHL before he can go to the AHL, so you can expect him to be there for another year while presumably Werek, Hagelin, and Kreider sign in the offseason.

by The Blue Seats on Feb 28, 2011 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Why? He comes to camp, if he makes the team, great! If not he goes to the AHL for seasoning. I want Kreider playing Pro Hockey next year. Enough of this NCAA nonsense. Time to develop kid!

by caonenine on Feb 28, 2011 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

yea, that NCAA nonsense was so bad for Stepan and McDonagh’s development, wasnt it?

by Michael Gleich on Feb 28, 2011 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Lot of people don’t realize how an extra year of development works out. Stepan, McD, Staal (OHL). You rush Kreider, you get stuck with Grachev 2.0 or the next MDZ project.

by Caerid112 on Feb 28, 2011 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

Krieder is already dominant at NCAA level. He is also a year behind Step, so it makes sense to pull him to the Pros after this season. Puts them on the same schedule, right?

by The Blue Seats on Feb 28, 2011 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

by caonenine on Feb 28, 2011 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

Grachev

Is still just 20. He hasn’t really been rushed. And he’s had to deal with a role change from center to winger

by dar9898 on Feb 28, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

MDZ wasn’t exactly rushed. The Rangers thought he was ready, he sure looked ready the first 30 or so games of 2009-10. MDZ will be fine. He just needs to mature a little, which is not unheard of for a 20 year old.

by caonenine on Feb 28, 2011 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

Don't know if I'd go that far

MDZ made the jump from juniors to the pros and he never once looked ready to play in his own end from juniors through the end of his rookie year.

by dar9898 on Feb 28, 2011 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

Here’s the difference

MDZ came in too early, and is now in the AHL.

McD spent an extra year in school and a few months in the AHL, and has actually filled in for Staal against 2 of the top offensive teams in the East.

by Caerid112 on Feb 28, 2011 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair, McD is filling an easier role. Offensive DMan is the rarest commodity in the NHL so it would make sense that it is the hardest thing to develop into. All the Rangers are asking McD to do, and I love the player and think he’s fantastic, is play solid in his own zone.

Sorry I touched a nerve with the NCAA comment. But personally I feel it is a bit overrated. It seems to be a league that is inferior to the CHL, but I could be way off base there

by caonenine on Feb 28, 2011 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Also, the fact MDZ is in the AHL as a 20 year old doesn’t make him a bust. He still has plenty of time to develop.

by caonenine on Feb 28, 2011 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair

McDonagh is actually much more developed as a player in general than Del Zotto, whether he’s playing as a defensive defenseman or not. And he’s also facing a lot tougher competition than Del Zotto has been able to handle. There is nothing at all about McDonagh’s role that is easier than facing the cupcake competition MDZ has.

by dar9898 on Feb 28, 2011 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

Again, I wasn’t trying to diminish McD but to say that McD is working out and MDZ isn’t, therefore MDZ is a bust, is too simplistic. I think the role MDZ is asked to play makes a huge difference.

by caonenine on Feb 28, 2011 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

+1 especially the last point.

by The Blue Seats on Feb 28, 2011 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

he was a winger in Junior so it was not a position change, unless you think he played center over Hodgson and Duchene.

He clearly turned a pro a year too early and I dont want to hear about how he had nothing to learn in Juniors because everyone knew he had issues he needed to work on beyond scoring totals.

by Michael Gleich on Feb 28, 2011 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yes he was a winger in juniors for one season

But he was a winger with Hodgson and Duchene and a pretty stacked Brampton team. Maybe he didn’t need to refine his abilities much for them to have success. One season with a very talented supporting cast might not have been enough

It seems like recent draft picks don’t count towards that list, only signed players. A lot of older Whale players that are creeping into the non-prospect stage of their careers (ages 24+) are RFAs after this season. I expect alot of them to be gone in the summer.

by caonenine on Feb 28, 2011 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

He does have his niche, but he is taking a roster spot from someone next year, and with the emergence of Wolski and Zuke, he is rather useless. His contract is very movable. I don’t dislike the guy, but i have other plans moving forward. Hopefully the brass does too.

by The Blue Seats on Feb 28, 2011 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

I’d hold him and move him draft day. That skill will come in handy while we’re fighting for points, better to have 3 than 2 guys.

Not opposed to getting rid of him, just wouldn’t do it just for the sake of doing it.

Notice the difference...

.. between Melo and Richards, as far as how the players handle it. Melo saying “if it doesn’t work out in NYC, I will take the Nets” vs. Richards decisive “I will only waive for NY” shifts who has the leverage. Kudos to Richards because “NY or bust” puts Sather in the driver’s seat. At 2:59, Joe N may realize it is Sather’s best offer, or be empty handed in July. Hopefully Sather doesn’t blink and his best offer is reasonable to us fans.
