A quiet deadline for us was a good thing
Since we didnt get Richards

Add John Mitchell to the list of players to whom Kovalev has equal value.

Disapointed we didn't pull the trigger on Richards
If the price was AA, a prospect and a #1 that seems pretty fair. With Richards in the mix AA was an extra piece, We’re sitting on a ton of prospects so our non-lottery 1st rounder wasn’t a big deal. I can’t imagine WHO the prospect was that held this up.
It wouldnt be smart to give up that draft pick.

Why Not?
We’ve got more pegs then holes to fill these days. Nothings free, so you have to give to get. This is supposed to be a weak draft, if they want the pick, give it to them. I like what Richards can bring to our chances of a playoff run, and chance to test drive him on Broadway BEFORE we lock him up more then what the 19th overall pick MIGHT bring

Last few #19 picks
2010 – Nick Bjugstad, who played well for the US in the WJC
2009 – our own Chris Kreider
2008 – Luca Sbisa – ok, nothing to cry about missing out on that one (although other players who were available included Michael Del Zotto, Derek Stepan, Tyler Ennis and John Carlson)
2007 – Logan MacMillan – ditto
2006 – Mark Mitera – ditto, though it could have been Claude Giroux
2005 – Jakob Kindl (with sudden favorite Paul Stastny available with the pick, as well as Kris Letang)
2004 – Lauri Korpikoski – no comment, with Travis Zajac, Wojtek Wolski and Mike Green still on the board
2003 – Ryan Getzlaff (others available includef Ryan Kessler, Mike Richards and Corey Perry)
I short, there are always very good young players available at #19. They can be missed, but the way Gordie Clark has been drafting I would not want to deprive the Rangers of whoever he would draft at that position without making sure I got a good long term return.
We need the right players, more then just good players
I would argue that of all the players you named only maybe Getzlaf or Perry could bring what the Rangers need right now.
by BuckarooClub on Feb 28, 2011 4:24 PM EST up reply actions
Kesler’s probably the best player on the list.

You could argue that
And I get that Kessler plays 2-ways and you like that. But I think the Getzlaf, and to a lesser extent Perry, best fill OUR need right now, to CREATE offense. Make sense?

I'm glad we didn't overpay for Richards
AA, a #1 and a prospect was way too much to give for a rental. If we could lock up Richards to a reasonable contract as part of the deal (i.e., $5 million per year for 4 years), maybe, but I don’t think Richards was going to be amenable to that.
Even if we got Richards without giving up a center, we would have Richards, AA, Step and Boyle as our top 4 centers. So AA would still not be merely an extra piece. And even if there was no room at center, one of them could move to wing or be used in another trade to upgrade the team. Just because we have a lot of prospects and young players doesn’t mean we should squander them.
I’m just quite surprised by Joe N.‘s non-move. He’s trying to get a huge pay-back for a concussed 31 y.o. rental. He’s sitting on a questionable ownership status, and there’s almost no way Richards won’t want to at least TEST the FA market.
If Richards leaves come July 1, that’s a horrible move for Dallas.
That being said, I’m glad Glen had the balls to hang-up.
I like this team constructed as is – they’re young and growing together. Do we need a couple more pieces to be a true contender? Sure. But I know this group can get farther if given the time to grow together properly.
Here’s to the possibility of Drury retiring, and Redden voiding his contract to try and get back to the big leagues!
AA, grachev, 1ST……UM i would’ve done that n a heartbeat…..AA has done NOTHING recently grachev to me shows no improvment a 1st pick on a weak talented draft sooo y didnt sather pull the trigger
by Anthony Tamburro on Feb 28, 2011 4:07 PM EST reply actions
Because AA is still on a pace to score about 40 points as a 22 year old, Grachev has improved considerably this season, especially since his first stint with the big club, and a first round pick even in a weak draft can result in too valuable a player to give up for a rental.
and we can possibly sign him in the offseason. not to mention the concussion, and Gaborik is out, also with a concussion. Or, Joe N tried to Sather…. Sather
Rangers FTW!
by BleedsRangerBlue on Feb 28, 2011 4:14 PM EST up reply actions
i would have been concerned with the concussion and i would say if they asked anymore than that then yea i would not have pulled the trigger…he said he would b a Ranger if Dallas couldnt sign him or whatever the case maybe…along with tortz and steady ownership here good surrounding youth an all-star sniper to play with this could not have been a rental….but if anything we get him for free n the offseason just talk money which is fine too but still
