Deadline Passes, Rangers Acquire John Mitchell from Leafs

Don't know the details, that's all I got.

We'll talk about it tonight on Blueshirt Banter Radio at 8 PM

Sounds like its for a 7th round pick.

Update by Nick Montemagno:

In a trade being announced just after the 3 p.m. deadline, TSN reports that the New York Ranger have acquired depth center John Mitchell from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2012 seventh-round pick. Mitchell, age 26, has recorded 2 goals and 1 assist in 23 games played with the Leafs this season. As of late, he has been playing in the AHL, though, with the Toronto Marlies.

My guess is that GM Glen Sather maybe would like to have Mitchell as the team's extra forward as opposed to Kris Newbury. As of now, this is the only move the Blueshirts have made on this rather quiet trade deadline day.

3:03 pm — A minor deal comes in after the horn, as the Leafs have sent minor-league center John Mitchell to the Rangers for a seventh-round pick, according to Darren Dreger of TSN. Perhaps the Connecticut Whale need to fill the hole left by Tim Kennedy.

Ahh, didn’t know that. Does a player just have to be on the AHL roster at a certain point to be eligible? Doesn’t exactly sound kosher if that’s the case, but interesting nonetheless.

Sending them down saves cap

Then, i think we can bring them up on “emergency recall” without effecting cap.

I said it in the 1st thread. If the Stewart/Shattenkirk for EJ deal, the Neal/Goligoski deal, and the Kaberle deal were done TODAY, then it would have been big headline material.

A 1st, 2nd (conditional 3rd), and Teubert…for a year and 2 months of Penner. Penner better tear shit up for that trade to be even remotely close to equal.

Given that they gave JJ 4.5m, they might try to give Doughty 10. So cap space may become an issue.

Short-term, no, but if Teubert goes on to be a decent D, and 2 decent draft picks?

I think Edmonton fans are just tired of the perennial ‘rebuidling’ phase they always seem to be in.

Yup, that's part of it.

They traded one of their best players for a couple of dice rolls and the King’s 4th or 5th best D prospect. Hard to get excited about that. His money will help re-sign all of H.O.P.E. though.

The picks are this year

They are worth more to Edmonton who has lots of holes to fill, then LA he needs the last few pieces. I think it’s a pretty fair deal.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 28, 2011 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

I think they at least should’ve gotten a roster player instead of that 2nd rounder. Loktionov, Martinez, Clifford….something.

They’re burning the ELCs on their guys now, so unless they get NHL-ready guys with those picks, they’re losing out long term.

I was replying to someone who thought the picks were too much for LA to give up.

I don’t think it’s a bad move for Edmonton though, if it all plays out right. Let the kids play, and realize this is “their team”. Secure a second #1 overall pick. Try and add some veteran “character guys” to fill holes over the next season or two. The last part is gonna be the toughest. No one wants to go to Edmonton, but if the kids show enough promise, maybe they can find a few vets willing to get on board.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 28, 2011 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Not looking at their revenue/attendance numbers, but I could kinda see Edmonton having to sell off a few more young guys coming of ELC’s before they are ready to compete anyway.

I think George Carlin gets a say here:

Personally, when it comes to rights, I think one of two things is true: I think either we have unlimited rights, or we have no rights at all. Personally, I lean toward unlimited rights – I feel, for instance, I have the right to do anything I please. But, if I do something you don’t like, I think you have the right to kill me. So where you gonna find a fairer fucking deal than that? So the next time some asshole says to you, “I have a right to my opinion,” you say, “Oh yeah? Well, I have a right to my opinion, and my opinion is that you have no right to your opinion.”

Why Talbot?

He’s just back from injury himself, right?

by BuckarooClub on Feb 28, 2011 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

He’s been the better of the two between he and CJ.

Chances are, they coulda put a blowup doll in that chair though, they’re gonna ride Hank now.

…Rather ride the doll…but I digress…

by Caerid112 on Feb 28, 2011 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

Not so much who was better, or that it mattered

But if one of them is gonna come up and ride the pine, I’d figure it would be better to let Talbot, coming off injury, see some pucks. And CJ, who’s been getting the big workload, takes a little vacation on the pine.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 28, 2011 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Talbot will ride the bench and only see ice inemergency. They keep chad in Ct to play every game. Makes sense

by GAThingy on Feb 28, 2011 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

All I can say is….shit-can Sullivan and put Biron behind the bench.

by Caerid112 on Feb 28, 2011 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Sullivan actually seems to DO something

Maybe we give Biron the reigns of this thing and trade Torts to TSN for Pierre McGwire – then flip McGwire to the coldest, darkest KHL team ever to make him disapear.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 28, 2011 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Man alive, I’m lucky I read the 2nd part of the above, because as soon as I saw Pierre’s name…..I was going to unleash a post full of wrath, death-threats, and desires to crush bunnies.

Yup, he diagrams those fail-ass plays they try when we pull the goalie.

by Caerid112 on Feb 28, 2011 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

What's worse

Being the guy who DIAGRAMS the fail-ass play, or the guy who stands next to him, doing nothing, cause he’s got nothing better?

Guess Lundqvist is on his own now.

There must be a goalie out there that hasn’t been claimed by the Isles

Sather says price to acquire another veteran backup was pretty high. Thinks backup will only play 1 or 2 games rest of the season.

well…should we look forward to the draft?

It was apparent even with Biron that Henrik was going to play most of the games down the stretch. I see the back-up getting a game in if we’ve clinched a playoff spot near the end.

Shitty timing though, Conklin was on waivers a day or two ago, as was McElhinney. EIther could’ve filled the role adequately.

John Mitchell

Wasn’t he the Attorney General under Nixon and married to loose cannon Martha? Must be too long in the tooth to play many minutes. Actually, glad that Sather didn’t trade away the farm to get Brad Richards. Rotten luck that Marty Biron has a broken collarbone. He has been a great backup to the King.

by snark38 on Feb 28, 2011 5:21 PM EST reply actions

well im happy we didnt make any big trades..

im mad that biron is out for season.. how many games we got left? id say backup plays 1 or 2 max, maybe against west coast teams

I Miss Biron ALREADY. Hope there are no more shootouts for the rest of the season.

by XxC17xX on Feb 28, 2011 5:38 PM EST reply actions

Boring!

Call me crazy, but I kinda miss the bad old days when we’d go out and rent a former all-star only to watch them suck in the Blueshirt. You know its a boring trade deadline day when we are talking about blow-up dolls in goal and Drury. John Mitchell…uh, yeah…this will be the highlight of his career.

by BeukeBOOM! on Feb 28, 2011 5:51 PM EST reply actions

Is he good ? Are we gonna play him against buffalo ?

He is Kennedy’s AHL replacement.

by BigB22 on Feb 28, 2011 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Oh ….. ok well then I guess I don’t care . Should I ?

by XxC17xX on Feb 28, 2011 6:42 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Not at all. The only thing to take from today is that we didn’t trade away any important pieces for Richards, and that’s it.

Reddden & Drury Retire and become Rangers Coaches

How about if Redden and Drury retire (voiding their contracts) but are given assistant coaches jobs in Hartford at the same amount of money they would have made if they continued to play( i use the term play loosely here). They get their money, the Rangers get much needed cap space and only Dolan is out some cash? what da ya think?
