Drury Out, Christensen In
From multiple sources (including the New York Rangers official twitter):
Torts says that Erik Christensen is back in lineup tomorrow and that Chris Drury likely won't make road trip due to sore knee
Drury won't be making the road trip with the team, Erik Christensen will be returning to the lineup tomorrow for the Rangers who travel to Montreal to face the Habs. Erik Christensen had a second degree MCL sprain, he was injured December 29th in a contest against the Devils. He was expected to miss 4-6 weeks and was reported as 'day-to-day' last night during the broadcast on MSG. Christensen had said that his knee was fine and that the only thing keeping him out of the lineup were his lungs (conditioning).
Torts on Drury: "He has had cranky knee and has progressively gotten worse...this has gone a few weeks & flared up again last night"
Torts: "He's played this game hard for a long time and I think it's a little bit of wear and tear...and it's just acting up on him now"
The captain is a scratch and 'likely won't make the road trip' with his knee. The Rangers have a 3-game road trip coming up: February 5th in Montreal, February 7th in Detroit, and February 11th at Atlanta. If Drury doesn't make the road trip altogether he stands to miss the next three games.
Torts also said the following about Christensen:
"He's a skilled guy and he's going to add to us, something we need, and I think he'll fit right in... he's excited to play." -via New York Rangers twitter feed

Sore knee. I think Torts was on the phone with Tanya Harding hoping to get some advice how he could turn Drury into the next Nancy Kerrigan. Yeah, went there.

This sounds like such a joke of a cover-up for making him a healthy scratch. I mean, are they trying to preserve his dignity or something?
And now we finally have a reason to call him ‘Captain Crutch’.
Nice to see EC back, hopefully he can provide an offensive jolt of sorts.

"Has Been Out, Never Will Be In"
This only matters if he plays with prospal and gaborik and gets it going; lines should be 1) Gabby/Christensen/Propsal 2) Dubinksy/Anisimov/Callahan 3) Zuc/Stepan/Wolski 4) Prust/Boyle/Avery. Roll four lines, if its a physical game give 4th line more minutes and move stepan in for Christensen on first line. Spot Zuc and Wolski on PP and after penalty kills to get there ice up.

Instead we have
Prospal-Stepan-Gaborik
Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan
Wolski-Boyle-Prust
Avery-Christensen-Zuccarello
Where you know that 4th line is going to get buried, w/ maybe 7 min a night. Wasteful.

Torts will figure this out. I worry that Sather is putting pressure on him behind the scenes to play certain guys. The MDZ thing the last few games doesn’t feel like Torts decision. For all the bashing Emminger gets, I’ll take his likelihood of being even for the game versus MDZ -1 or more.

You know
I’m in agreement with most that MDZ should be in Hartford while Eminger be in the line up. I did see the +/- stat that Eminger ATOI: 16:43 is a -8 (worst on the team), while MDZ ATOI: 20:47 is a -4 (2nd worst on the team).

How does that metric account for quality of opponent on ice? Eminger saw more time against better offensive players than Del Zotto.

When MDZ was struggling Torts spotted or sat him in 3rd periods for favorable matchups. Don’t recall that happening to Emingers to same degree.

Got it. I tend to fixate and remember the bad spots and think they were the norm. Looking past the numbers, I put MDZ on a bus to Hartford for the remainder (unless injuries require call up). He’s still a cornerstone for the team going forward, just needs more time to develop.
by Sather Sux Dolan SwallXws on Feb 4, 2011 3:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Meh, if he’s going down to the AHL to work on his problems, then he needs to stay down there regardless of injury call-ups. There’s probably plenty of cheap 7th D material Sather could pry away from a late-round draft pick.
Blueshirt Banter *It's just pain.*
Torts is a great coach but I don’t understand why he won’t roll four lines. I feel like this team would just bulldoze other teams if he did that. But I’m looking forward to seeing what this lineup can do. It’s probably a good thing the next couple of games are road games. The Rangers seem to like that.
This is great news. Drury just has been a shell of himself for a long time, maybe that concussion last year had more of an impact than we thought. In any case, at least we replace him with a scoring threat, albeit an inconsistent one.
Really? He was a shell of himself during the Olympics, which was after his concussion?

Good debate as to whether this gives him dignity or not. Of course we could all be wrong and he could ACTUALLY be hurt (somehow I doubt it).
This does give him some dignity but it doesn’t give the fans any, it insults our intelligence as you said on your blog leetchie. I think this is a little suspicious:
“He’s played this game hard for a long time and I think it’s a little bit of wear and tear…and it’s just acting up on him now”
Maybe I am trying to read between the lines when there is nothing there… but yeah, suspicious to say the least.

i dont doubt there is likely some factual basis to the knee, but the timing and the way they did it doesnt help.
if everyone believes it is a cover story then for me it actually makes it worse, whether there is a real injury or not.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 4, 2011 2:35 PM EST up reply actions
The problem is, regardless if the knee is acting up or not, the way they’ve handled other situations (the boggle with MDZ’s demotion/call-up most recently), it’s hard to trust them on merit alone.
Then you look at the team getting healthier, and his quality of play this season..and it just looks continuously worse. He just had the all-star rest, missed a good chunk of training camp and part of the season with broken fingers (during which he didn’t skate much)…and it’s acting up now? Not buying it.
Blueshirt Banter *It's just pain.*
How did they boggle MDZ’s call up? He came up because they were unsure about Girardi.

All very good points.
Not every player can play until he’s 38 or 40, Drury is definitely on the decline. Guys like Lidstrom and Recchi are very rare. I think there is a physical aspect of it, Drury has lost a lot of his speed and we all know what his wrist shot has looked like lately (looks like he is shooting a nerf puck). I am starting to get the gut feeling that he might consider hanging them up after this year instead of being bought out. Maybe that is just wishful thinking but I believe that Drury is a classy guy and may take the road that Naslund so admirably took.

They specifically said it was ‘wear and tear’ and it’s just acting up now. I mean, he’s getting the least minutes of his career (guessing, at least since his rookie campaign I’d venture), missed a bunch of time with his finger, during which it was reported he hadn’t even been skating (as per Sam and Joe during MSG broadcasts).
Even if something did happen to his knee…you’d think the Rangers would have a better PR staff to make something up so it didn’t sound so suspicious that even Captain Obvious said “you’re shitting me”.
Blueshirt Banter *It's just pain.*
Does the road trip include ATL since there are 3 days off and they will obviously come back to NY after Det?
Not too sure about that, they obviously can afford to come back to NY and get a few practices in between the 7th and 11th of February… I suspect Drury will skate with the team and will only miss the next two games.

The Rangers owe Drury nothing!
They paid him for his success and leadership he gave to other teams. He’s been an unmitigated disaster here in terms of production. You can argue whether its his fault or whether the team should have forecast this and not overpaid, but he has done nothing for the organization to make it better over the past two years. But you don’t throw gasoline on a fire, no new captain until next season. Great point thayt if he had any self awareness to how fans view him, he’d take a buyout or take a page out of Naslunds book. Go spread your pizza empire over the north east. He’s the last legacy of a failed past for this organization and has no place in its future.

"We play them a few more times this year"

It comes down to timing for me to be snarky about it. I think Dru is probably legitimately banged up and a little worn out (he isn’t getting any younger) and he could use the break to get healthy. Maybe the fact that EC coming back into the lineup affords the Rangers with the luxury of resting Drury because they have the extra bodies. I don’t mean to kick Dru when he’s down (I have been in his corner for a very long time) but this smells fishy to me. I hope he isn’t seriously hurt and that he proves us all dead wrong by coming back and contributing to the club more than he has. He’s been a reliable player on the fourth line but we all expect some kind of offense from him.

Also, they were just talking last night about how EC doesn’t have his legs yet and is still getting back into shape. It didn’t seem like he’d be back Saturday, sort of seems like he’s been rushed back. Drury got banged up the past two games. Seems like a coincidence.

Too much of a coincidence for me John. I understand your perspective on it, and it something everyone should take into the equation. But Drury isn’t exactly playing hard minutes, 8:43 last night, and 9:19 against Pittsburgh. He had the All-Star break before that to get healed up a little bit if he was already hurting and sore.

Hey, who doesn’t love a good conspiracy theory. Have to admit that the timing of the whole thing is just ripe to be picked apart though. Smoke, fire, and all that.
But it’s probably just been a nagging thing, and now that we’re finally getting healthy again he can take the time to rest it. For all intents and purposes I’d much rather have him than Avery at this point. Both of them aren’t going to get good minutes, but at least Dru can take a face-off and work the PK.

Granted, but if you can find where in the Devils game it even looks like he could’ve gotten hurt, I’d more willing to believe it’s not just an excuse. It just strikes me as odd that in the 23 games Drury’s been back, not once has either he nor Torts mentioned anything about him having some issues, nor has Drury been sitting out of practices, nor, as Caerid said, out of optional skates.

If Drury is on the IR, does that open up cap space?
He’s not on any type of IR, he’s just a scratch. I’m not fluent on the whole deal, but short-term IR allows you to bring up an extra player, but the player on IR has to be out for a certain # of games?
A player who has an injury that renders him physically unable to play for a minimum of seven days after that date of the injury can be placed on the Club’s Injured Reserve List. Once a player is placed on the list, the Club may replace said player on its NHL roster with another player. All determinations that a player has suffered an injury warranting injured reserve status must be made by the Club’s medical staff and in accordance with the Club’s medical standards.
# A player placed on Injured Reserve is ineligible to compete in NHL games for a period of not less than seven days.
LTIR is a whole other deal.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
I don’t like the fact that Zuke is on the 4th line, just like I hated when Wolski was on it last night.

It seems like a waste
When there was clear chemistry with the Wolski- Stepan- Zuccarello line. Avery can be plugged in LW on Boye’s line without losing much of anything that Fedotenko brought. And Christensen should play with Gaborik and Prospal.
I don’t see what that 4th line gives the Rangers. It seems like a random assignment of players.
Maybe this is the compassionate way to set up his retirement after the season.
Maybe its why they feel they can afford to look at souray.
One can hope, although those hopes usually end in disaster, aka the current pres.

I really doubt
Drury will retire. I think he’ll accept a trade first, to prove to himself and Rangers fans that he’s still an effective player.
Who would actually want to trade for a player on the decline carrying a monster contract is a different issue.
There are more conspiracy theories here than in a politcal thread on a hip hop forum
Maybe you’re right, but I think people are reading into it too much and giving the Rangers too much credit for being respectful or compassionate. Drury is not a franchise player that has been with the Rangers for 10+ years and is over the hill now but reluctant to retire. He has actually played 3 years, if you don’t include this one and you shouldn’t. He has been captain but certainly has never been the face of the franchise. The argument has been made this past week that Drury “can’t be scratched” because of the damage to team morale. If that is true, a bogus excuse would do the same damage because his teammates certainly know the real story. I don’t think Torts would hold back from a “Drury hasn’t been 100% and we are going to give the younger guys a chance” comment if that was actually the case.
But maybe you guys are right, we’ll see.
Is there somewhere to send mass emails with our line wishes?
I think if the banter had some address to mass spam a plea for the lines that the fans want to see it might be possible to get someone to pass a suggestion on to torts.
