Drury Out Six Weeks, Del Zotto Stays

According to Andrew Gross and several other sources Chris Drury is going to undergo knee surgery and will miss the next six weeks.

Andrew Gross
Chris Drury (left knee) will be out six weeks. Will undergo surgery.

We'll update and provide more information as it becomes available. Fluid had been drained from Drury's knee recently. Drury played in 23 games this season and has registered 4 assists and 23 shots. To say this has been a rough season for Chris Drury would be an understatement. If Drury is gone for six weeks the Rangers should look for him to return sometime in mid-to-late March. Coach John Tortorella voiced his displeasure with everyone who thought the Drury injury was fabricated. I will be the first to apologize for insinuating the 'convenience' of the injury, I wish Drury the best of health and a fast and complete recovery. The Rangers could use him in the playoffs. Join me for more after the jump...

Star-divide

In other news Michael Del Zotto apparently impressed coach John Tortorella with his play enough to stay with the big club. The news is that he will not be sent back down to the Whale. Steve Eminger has been a healthy scratch at the expense of Del Zotto getting playing time. What this means for Eminger we will have to wait and see, there is no reason to think why the Rangers wouldn't hold onto him as a solid option for a seventh defender.

Arthur Staple
Also, Michael Del Zotto sticking with , according to John Tortorella. Not being sent down anytime soon.

UPDATE: Torts sounds off on Drury's injury (from the official site of the New York Rangers)

“He tried like hell to keep on playing, but it’s just gotten to the point that he can’t,” Tortorella told reporters at the MSG Training Center. “He tried to play on it. We tried playing him. It didn’t work out.”
“They’re going to go in, scrape his knee, take a look at it,” Tortorella informed the media. “They really haven’t pinpointed anything. That guy has played hard for a long time and I just think it’s worn on him. It certainly has not been getting better.”

The exact nature of the injury is not known at this time, but it is clear that Drury requires arthroscopic surgery to evaluate and hopefully fix what is preventing Drury from dressing for the Rangers. Chris Drury has missed 33 games due to injury this season.

I do not want to see any Ranger player hurt, I have to admit I am glad Drury is not taking up ice time away from someone who might be able to score atleast one goal this year.

Should never feel ‘good’ about anyone getting injured, especially the captain of our team. I understand why you might feel that way but keep in mind that Drury plays hard and is a good guy.

no

It is not life theatening. it cannot be pinned on a single event. He will get top notch medical care. He will still be stealing his 7 mil from the rangers. Hois life will continue just fine and dandy.

Oh yeah, and the rangers don’t have to figure out ways not to play him.

by GAThingy on Feb 9, 2011 7:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

well here’s the thing. This point of view would probably work for someone milking a worker’s comp. case, but for professional athletes this is their life’s work. I’m sure much more goes into collecting their paycheck than the paycheck itself. This is probably especially true for a guy like Drury. While I can admit he has had a far from stellar season, and that there were a few times that I truly wanted to see him sit, this puts more of a face on what he’s been dealing with. You can’t blame a guy for getting older.

At the same time, it’s for this reason why I actually feel bad for DiPietro. After having been as highly touted as he was, injuries have claimed the man’s career, he never even had a chance to get to it. But, he is also the fishstick’s backstop, so i don’t feel too bad about it.

Also hoping that he does some soul-searching and, for the same future health considerations, thinks about multiple concussions, hand/finger breaks, and now knee issues and explores retirement at seasons-end.

Coach John Tortorella [Insert word here] his displeasure with everyone who thought the Drury injury was fabricated.

:-) Let’s hope they spend a lot of time working with MDZ if he’s going to stay up.

As for Drury, did anybody ever say what the exact problem is, or if something specific happened in a game, besides ‘wear and tear’? Aside from the conspiracy theories, this has obviously been a lingering issue…did the team know about it and let him play on it?

with Drury missing a lot of games… what kind of cap relief should we get… in all likely hood we are looking at a near season ending injury, knee surgery and recover at 6 weeks, then rehab, he may not be back again this season if ever… what kind of cap relief would we get if he’s not returning this season?

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Feb 9, 2011 2:50 PM EST reply actions

there’s no cap relief applied unless/until a team is over the cap limit. Since the Rangers currently are below that it doesn’t matter.

If they were to add a high-priced veteran somewhere along the line, all of the IR time spent by Prospal/Callahan/Dubinsky/Drury would be applied.

It all depends what they do. If it is removal of cartilage or scar tissue, may be quick. If its tendons or ligaments, it season over. Souunds more like the former though

Help me out here guys

I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I like speculating:

Don’t playoff rosters need to be set in early March? If so, I can’t see the Rangers adding him to the postseason roster right? And again, if so, I don’t think its a stretch to say we may have seen the last of Chris Drury for at least this season, possibly forever? Six weeks takes us to late March, there will be about 2-3 weeks left in the season.

I may be off base, just guessing around.

I defer to my Banter friends for confirmation on all of this.

Actually, after the trade deadline, there is no limit on the size of your active roster. Every player under contract to the organization is available for the “active NHL roster”. Prior to that there’s a 23 man limit for active players, but Dru is on the IR.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 9, 2011 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

To clarify

you can have as many players as you want up, but you can only make 4 call ups after the trade deadline. Think it has more to do with keeping ahl playoffs interesting, then the NHL. They don’t want top ahl guys in the press box during playoffs. Just a guess on that part though.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 9, 2011 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

99% certain about this ...

Jim, rosters don’t need to be set like in baseball. The only thing to keep in mind is that free agent players added to the organization after the trade deadline (like Jason Strudwick a few springs ago) are not eligible. But any player that is NYR property at the trade deadline is eligible for the playoffs.

by caonenine on Feb 9, 2011 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Hockey is not like baseball where you have to set a playoff roster.

Every year when teams exp injuries they call up ahl guys to fill in regularly. Also, injured guys show up late in the playoffs.

No real room for him if the team is healthy so there would be an issue as to who is on the 23 man active roster.

Best to give him the year off to rehab and come back..in 2012

Beginning of the end?

After the broken fingers I think we were all hopeful Dru would come back and be the same guy we had last year, adding grit (or jam if you like) and putting in a few key goals. After seeing his play this year and now with this knee injury, I don’t see how he can be a part of the mix if/when he’s ready to come back this year or next. If we’re going with the youth movement, its really time for Dru to step aside. I only hope this doesn’t turn into a Redden-type deal where everyone gets on him. He’s a class guy with more miles than his years would indicate. I hope he and the Rangers can work something out to end his run here with the dignity and class he deserves.

about MDZ, im pleasantly surprised, torts seemed to initially indicate that he needed more time with the Whale and that his current stay would be short
im glad that he’ll be sticking around, torts obviously thinks that it’s the right decision, and he can keep building his experience
hopefully he can play more comfortably knowing that he will not be immediately demoted the next day

he hasn’t been too bad in my opinion the last few games, nothing great, but nothing too terrible

The big issue for me

is this explains his lack of production and fire over the last month. Fluid does not just build up as a result of wear and tear – it is secondary to trauma.

I like and respect Drury. I’m sure he’d agree there can be no tolerance for lack of production in a meritocracy. So what this situation tells me is he played through a ton of pain and discomfort, did his best and never complained or put the blame on his health.

Tis the truth. Drury’s situation reminds me of former Washington Caps captain Chris Clark. His productivity had gone down drastically due to a series of injuries. During his last full year with the team (2008-2009), he had had a stress fracture of the hand and came back but still wasn’t productive. Then, he was scratched for two games in a row during a weekend. Everyone had assumed it was a “healthy” scratch (and, of course, we know that a healthy scratch of the team captain is a really drastic move) but that Monday, we learned that he was to have surgery on his hand and would be out for the year.

Interesting point

On captains of teams. Especially in hockey there is more of a ‘lead by example’ slogan that goes along with being team captain. I mean Drury is the reason we play the way we do if you think about it. Jumping in front of pucks, hitting, grinding and killing penalties is our identity and that started with Drury, I want to see how my team responds to this loss.

I’m hoping Kolarik gets called up and Christensen becomes a healthy scratch.
Dubi/AA/Cally
Avery/Prospal/Gabby
Wolski/Stepan/MZA
Kolarik/Boyle/Prust

Maybe put Wolski with Gabby and Avery back with Boyle and Prust, with Kolarik skating with Stepan MZA.

by KingHenrik on Feb 9, 2011 4:53 PM EST reply actions

That first sentence made me cringe...

Because Kolarik looks so much like Kotalik at first glance =O

I think Christensen should not be scratched, instead he should be on a line with Wolski and Gabby. I liked Kolarik’s game but he should have atleast this year and probably next down there to hit his ceiling, so to sspeak…and his name scares me to death.

by louielounz1 on Feb 9, 2011 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

I really do not see what Christensen brings to the table, he does not fit with this team. People say that he has chemistry with Gaborik even though he was claimed after Gaborik’s hottest streak. He does not put up points and is not adequate in his own end, I really don’t think he should be dressed especially when Feds comes back.

by KingHenrik on Feb 9, 2011 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

I like him as a 3rd line forward and 2nd unit pp guy myself but being scratched for Kolarik would be a bad roster move because Kolarik has not shown signs of being better nor has he really done much while up with us. Plus Christensen’s background would indicate that he easily loses confidence. I will agree that his spot should be taken by Feds, but until then his spot should be secure, IMO.

Alot of people on this site (8kpower, Moshe, etc) have the nerve to make fun of a guy like Kovalev, but at least he cares, he plays hard and has 11 goals, which looks like 50 compared to Drury’s total. Bottom line, Drury will go down in history as one of the worst New York Rangers in history and I can not wait to no longer have to watch his horrible play on the ice. When Derick Boogard has more goals than someone who once was able to score over 30, it’s time for that player to go.

I don't think it's fair to say Drury doesn't care

He’s at the very least played injured for the Rangers. And he is definitely not one of the worst Rangers in history or even one of the worst in the last decade. Heck, he’s probably in the top 20 Rangers of the last decade. He’s overpaid; but that is not his fault

and further, I think it’s pretty difficult to say that Kovalev is the metric for “care.” I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but the term “enigma” was almost coined for Kovalev, despite his being one of my favorite players from the good old days.

Kovalev

Skate down the right wing board, stick handle past the opposition right wing, dangle around the left D-man, go behind the net, avoid a check from the right D, give up the puck on the left wing board.

Rinse, repeat.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

It’s almost plug in the name of your favorite Russian enigma for that statement. But, I can’t help but wonder, aren’t players of other ethnicitites guilty of the same faults at times?

yes

And it is a negative stereotype. I’m sure there were/are lazy, enigmatic canadian and us born players

If you play in a controlled., skillful manner

and your name is Brian Gionta then you’re “tenacious.” If it’s Kovalev, you’re “a finesse player who doesn’t play hard,” “dangles,” “gives up”.

Double standard? Probably. But, then again, if the Russians do well, then Socialism wins.
