Rangers Analysis: Next Three Can Determine Rangers' Fate
The New York Rangers are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference at the moment, as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Senators on Sunday to tie the Rangers in points. Being that Buffalo has a game at hand, they temporarily get the seventh place spot over the Blueshirts, but both teams now have a four-point gap between themselves and the ninth place Carolina Hurricanes. For the Rangers, they will look to widen that gap over the next week, but it will not be easy since they are going up against three different but challenging opponents in a six-day span.
Saturday's shootout win against the San Jose Sharks was a character win and one that was desperately needed. However, how many times have we seen this team fail in the follow-up games after a character win this season? It's happened often, so I believe that the next three games will tell if this team really has what it takes to make the playoffs this year. Will they build off the momentum that goes along with taking down one of the powerhouses in the Western Conference? Or was that simply a one-night-wonder that will end up having little significance to this team?
We will find out starting tonight when the rival New York Islanders visit Madison Square Garden. While the Isles have only won four of their last ten, they've gotten points out of eight of those games. Their persistent effort and resilient attitude has seen them forcing their opponents to overtime more often than not as of late, and right now the points are adding up since they are only eleven points behind eighth. That may seem like a lot, but considering how we've seen things shake out in the East in past years, you never know what could happen.
Tuesday's tilt will be a big test for the Rangers. Like always, it is a game in which the Rangers are facing a club lower than them in the standings. With big points on the line, that means the Blueshirts must win that game. They cannot afford to come out flat, however, otherwise they will be embarrassed by their intrastate foes. A 60-minute effort will be required of the Rangers tonight, and recently those have been very hard to come by.
Things only get more difficult from there as the Blueshirts will then have to play host to the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. The Habs have been playing great hockey for the past few weeks and have begun to run away with the sixth place spot in the East. They are a team that always seems to give the Rangers fits too, so that will be no easy win for John Tortorella's squad. They work hard and are fast, putting the opposition's defense to the test. Hopefully New York's blue-line will be up to the task.
And then on Sunday, to top off the trifecta, the Rangers will visit our good friends from Pittsburgh - the Penguins. Somehow the Penguins have continued to win without their best players in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in the lineup, which to me says a whole lot about a team. Many accounted for the Pens being down and out once those two were injured, but they've proved the critics wrong and have continued to find ways to get points. Several of those points have come against the Rangers this season, so again, another team that the Rangers have run into problems against.
And don't forget that the game will be played in Pittsburgh and televised nationally on NBC. Perfect.
If the Rangers really want this as bad as they claim and if they truly are ready to battle for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, these next three games will prove that. If they are pretenders are not suited for the playoffs this year, these next three games will also prove that. Three different opponents all with different playing styles is going to be tough for the Rangers and they will need to play their best hockey of the season.
With that said, I think it's safe to assume that the Islanders, Canadiens and Penguins could potentially determine the Rangers' fate this season over the next week.

When was the last game against the Islanders?
I vaguely remember four games this year, horrible loss after blowing a lead in 3rd (Columbus Day?), then one goal victories in a home and home, then a blowout win. I don’t think they’ve played since Frolov went down and Zucc and McD came up. The Islanders are scrappy, but undisciplined and can’t play defense for shit. Plus big edge in net with Hank vs. Montoya or any other POS they roll out in net. I will say that Tavares looks to be developing nicely for them, but he’s a very one dimensional player. Tremendous in offensive zone, but very average skating ability and aversion to defense.

It was a huge blowout right after Christmas at MSG.
Basically ending the Rangers consistent offense from that point in the season with a few exceptions like the Caps and Flyers blowouts from the past couple of weeks.
I’d be wary of Montoya tonight. I’m sure he wants to prove the Rangers wrong for giving up on him.

well...
on the Rangers giving up on Al Montoya…when did he expect to get a starting role behind Hank………i mean he’s only 2 years younger…and was never gonna start over Hank…can’t imagine he was that delusional…and was probably better off in that we gave up on him.
but all that aside, you’re probably right….we’ll manage to make him look like Patrick Roy tonight….but still pull off a win.

The next 5 to me are still more important than just the next 3. With NYI, MTL, PIT, FLA, OTT, they need to pull at least 7 points out of it to come out feeling good. They would then only need 7pts in the last 7 games to get to 90, which should still be good enough to hold the last seat.

Not to sound too fatalist, but when was the last time the Rangers got 7 out of a possible 10 points?

Jan 5-13.
They’ve had a couple 6 of 10’s though (including the last 5), the only difference is finding a way to get one of those 1-goal losses to OT instead. It’s not that daunting, at least on paper.

That’s why last game was a start to their 8 game winning streak. They will 8-2-2 last 12. They havent had a winning streak yet this year , and now is the time. No excuses. So it is written, so it shall be done.

Tiebreaker with Sabres
Minor point but Buf is ahead because of one more Reg/OT win not the game in hand.

Not true.
The shootout win vs regulation/ot win tie-breaker, only comes into account, IF the teams are tied in points AND overall wins of any variety.
As per the change by the Board of Governors
The new NHL by-law that dictates how the conference standings are determined at the end of the season now reads:
At the conclusion of the regular Schedule of Championship Games the standing of the teams in each Conference shall be determined in accordance with the following priorities in the order listed:
a) First place in each of the three divisions seeded 1, 2 and 3.
b) The higher number of points earned by the Club.
c) The greater number of games won by the Club (excluding games won in the Shootout).
d) The higher number of points earned in games against each other among two or more Clubs having equal standing under priorities (b) and ©.
e) The greater differential between goals scored for and against by clubs having equal standing under priority (d).
"It's such a fine line between stupid...and clever."
well...
if this is true…i think they tried hard to make a good rule and failed.
of course this rule woudl have helped us last year…but it truly is kinda dumb to more or less let OTLs be worth more than actual wins in this case

haha...
thanks…was writing my reply as you posted this…was just checking some numbers first.
again…we have 2 more wins (36) to their (34), however they have 4 more OTLs.
hence, giving them those extra 4 points to tie us.
so seeing how there is no way in the world 4OTLs should ever be considered equal to 2 additional wins, regulation win or not…then the only real think left would be that game in hand….though i do find that to be a weird tie breaker at the moment……guess it really doesnt matter on the last day of the season…there will be no more games in hand to worry about.

Not to be too anal
But the game in hand is still irrelevant, because even if Buf loses it, gaining no points, they are still ahead of us because of subsection "c".
Now if you will excuse me I have to go and count to 50 and spin around d 12 times before I close this window.
"It's such a fine line between stupid...and clever."
the weird thing...
i thought that that was like the 3rd tiebreaker….i mean right now the Rangers actually have 2 more wins…and buffalo must have like 4 more OTLs….i thought the Reg/OT wins only mattered if they were tied in points and games won.
No matter how you win a game….it should still be worth a hell of a lot more than 4 OTLs
so i actually think the game in hand might do it, cuz there is no other statistical reason they shoudl be ahead of us now

One game at a time!
we have to stop forecasting down the schedule and take it one game at a time for our own sanity
Asking for sanity out of Ranger fans. Really?
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

Montoya might not even play tonight.
It seems he had cramps after the Devils game.
And no, I’m not making that up.
Tell him to tape a Motrin to it.

I have a feeling...
this is going to be a very chippy, ugly game. the special teams will have to be good tonight.
