Rangers Analysis: Brandon Prust Deserves Extra Effort Award
The New York Rangers official website has opened the voting for the 2010-11 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award presented by Lightspeed Trading. If you do not already know, the Extra Effort Award is an honor presented to a player that the fan base feels most went above and beyond the call of duty throughout the regular season. Alternate captain Ryan Callahan has been the winner of the award for the past two years, and has made a pretty solid case for a three-peat this year, but in my eyes the honor belongs to someone else this season.
"It's only pain"
That right there is my selection for the Extra Effort Award in a nutshell. Brandon Prust has not missed a single game this season despite dealing with a shoulder injury and other various nagging injuries all year. And not only has he played in every game this season, but he has played in every game this season. There is no night off for Brandon; he brings the same resilient effort to the ice every night, whether he be on the fourth line or the second. He's quickly become one of the more reliable players on the team and has gained full trust from head coach John Tortorella.
Prust is a player that wears his heart on his sleeve, and everything he does is for the team, not himself. I've said this in the past, but in Prust's first game as a Ranger after being acquired at the trade deadline last season, he stood up for teammate Matt Gilroy by dropping the gloves with a member of the opposition after a cheap hit along the boards. Gilroy was Prust's teammate for approximately less than a day, but it didn't matter. There he was, immediately coming to Matt's defense. Incredible.
From that day on, absolutely nothing has changed. Prust is always quick to defend his teammates and engage in a fight, even with the shoulder injury. That's amazing and deserves to be recognized.
But scrapping is not the only way in which Prust has contributed to this team, as he's also done some good things with the gloves on as well. His penalty killing skills have drastically improved since he was first brought here and along with Brian Boyle, he's been nothing short of stellar when down a man. Blair Betts who? Freddy Sjostrom who? Prust filled those shoes quickly and efficiently because of that aforementioned effort and dedication.
In addition to that, Prust has reached career-highs this season in goals (11), assists (14) and points (25). So he's not just a bruiser by any means. Brandon has the ability to contribute on the scoreboard and he has done that this year, at key times too.
I don't want to tell you who to vote for, but make the right choice here. An award and honor like this means the world to a player like Prust - believe me it does - so keep that in mind when submitting your vote.

No Brainer.
I guess they could do a list of nominees and BP could say something “It’s an honor to mentioned with the other nominees.”

well, duh.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
my vote goes to Christopher Drury who is our captain and a fine Ranger who can make some mean pizza……
JK of course…..in Prust we trust!
Chris Drury...
well im sure he’d just barely beat out Matt Gilroy and MDZ for the Chris Drury “Excellence in Pizza” award with his dedicated service of making hot oil pizza a family favorite all around CT….also feeding the Whale is important.

Short of seeing
Gaborik pick corners with a wristers through the D that the goalie never sees, no one makes me happier to see score than Prust.

Agree ... BUT
Boyle wasn’t even figured onto the team this year. Everyone thought he’d be playing in Hartford for sure, including all the coaches. And then he went all-out with his off-season training and became a 20-goal scorer and a staple on the team. The extra effort he put forth to actually reach that higher level is incredible, and I think both Prust and Boyle are equally deserving.
Pierre McGuire needs to go away.

a very good point...
didnt even think of that….he sure put forth that extra effort in the off-season…and has been great this season…but being much bigger he doesnt take quite the beating as Prust does…yet despite how often Prust has been “dinged” up still hasn’t missed a game and still plays his ass off every game…we really can’t say that about anyone else. a “normal” player would have taken a few games off already doing the work he does every game.

I've been saying this for a while
Not to get off topic, but this is why Boyle will be a force in this league. He is big, he has a good skill set, but most importantly, he WANTS it. Nobody told him he ‘had’ to go out during the off season and work to improve his game, but he went out there, put in the work, and improved his game. He is young, and if he continues to put forth that kind of effort to improve as a hockey player, the sky is the limit for this guy.
As far as the McD award, Prust in my opinion is a no brainer. While Boyle put in the extra effort to improve his own game, and should be commended for doing so, Prust has put forth that extra effort for his ‘team.’ There are a ton of guys on ‘this’ team, ‘this’ year who are ‘deserving’ of the award, but to me, there is only one guy who as earned it in every game this year.
Agreed
But what makes Prust even cooler is that we got rid of Kotalik to acquire him. What a steal. Additionally, our most consistent line this season has been Prust-Boyle-Fedetenko (when healthy). They are not always the most dangerous, but they always play hard.
“And not only has he played in every game this season, but he has played in every game this season.”
Only mistake here man, Prust is very deserving. Work ethic is inspirational.
I’m not sure that quote was a mistake – maybe italics missing on second “played”? I think Nick meant not only is he in the lineup every game, but he plays his ass off.
+1

You can vote more than once
from the voting page: “You can vote as often as you like, although you will be asked to complete the contact information form each time you enter.”
If anybody out there actually has a cell # 123-456-7890, I apologize for all of the marketing crap you’ll probably be getting.

Sather was either genius or luck in the deal that brought Prust to the Rangers. Ollie who??? I could not have said anything better than what has been said… For my 30th bday back in december the wife asked me who’s heritage jersey do you want? Callahan with a C on it for next year? Nope Proudly supporting a PRUST jersey!!!!
Voted yesterday
Good points. I voted yesterday, before seeing this article. My vote was for Prust, although Boyle has certainly had a great year too.
Voted Prust Today
Only Callahan approaches his heart and toughness. It was not an easy call.
Fantastic!
Really I want to sincerely thank you for writing this! Prust is everything you want with your players and he deserves this award. Watching him set the tone against the Habs tonight once again showed why he has so much heart. Great writing and thanks for reading my mind!

Well said Nick
If for no other reason, think of all the great Prustbyterian quotes:
In Prust we Trust
It’s Just Pain
“He’s a warrior and it’s an honor to play with him.” -Brian Boyle on Brandon Prust.
@DigDeepNYR
"I like a man who grins when he fights." -Sir Winston Churchill
"It's just pain." -Brandon Prust | "In Prust we Trust."
I can’t argue with this. It blows my mind that he was just considered a “throw-in,” a disposable meat shield, and that his previous NHL coaches didn’t see what they had! Or is Tortorella the only one who would have seen Prust for what he was? I’d be interested in your thoughts on this.
Don’t get me wrong, Cally is my favorite player—and watching the Rangers without him was like watching a different team (had to go to Youtube for my Cally fix)—but Prust is at least equally qualified for the award.
Any idea on who has the inside track on the Player’s Player award?
