Where are they now: Taking a look at former Rangers since the lockout

I saw a report from the Coyotes that said Michael Roszival has been one of the best defensemen they’ve had in the last 30 games since he was traded.  There have been many NY Rangers traded or not resigned since the Lockout. Some of them we still have an affection for.   I was like looking to see what was good what was bad.  Looking at some of these players we aren't doing too bad.

Here’s a look at some of them.

Star-divide

Michael Roszival – Phoenix Coyotes – Playing 20 minutes a game.  Still solid stay at home defensemen

Al MontoyaNew York Islanders -  Playing most nights for the hated Islanders.  Not doing poorly considering the team in front of him.

Aaron VorosAnaheim Ducks – Played 12 games and averaging 5 minutes.  No Points.  We did trade him for a reason.

Alex Kotalik - Calgary Flames – has a total of 6 pts in 25 games.

Christopher Higgins – Vancouver Canucks – Named 3 star by the NHL last week.  Still not the offensive power forward he was projected to be

Nigel Dawes – Montreal Canadians – Same production.  Liked him as a player but never got an NHL level game going.

Olli Jokinnen – Calgary Flames – 52 pts in 74 games.  He’s playing much better than he did when he was on the Rangers, but still only has 16 goals for the season.

Scott Gomez – Montreal Canadians – 35 pts in 71 games.  This is why he was a good trade plus what we got in return (McDonaugh).

Pascal DupuisPittsburgh Penguins – Remember him on the Rangers for the 6 games.  He has really restarted his career in Pittsburgh

Matt CullenMinnesota Wild – Played well for us but wasn’t a great fit.  38 points in 71 games

Jed Ortmeyer – Minnesota Wild – only played 3 games but I’m sure he brought energy every night.

Paul Mara – Montreal Canadians – 14 games 15 min/game.  Hope he’s doing well.

PA Parenteau – New York Islanders – 49 Points in 75 games.  I liked him when he played.  He just didn’t fit into the future plans for the club once Stepan signed.

Nikolay ZherdevPhiladelphia Flyers – 19 pts  in 51 games.  So glad we dumped him.

Jody Shelley – Philadelphia Flyers – 4 pts.  He should have stayed with the Rangers.  He’s playing 6 mins a game.

Derek Morris – Phoenix Coyotes – 16 pts and 21 min/gm.  He’s back in Phoenix doing what he does.

Petr Prucha – Phoenix Coyotes -  not playing

Ryan Hollweg – Phoenix Coyotes – not playing

Andrew Hutchinson – Pittsburgh Penguins – 31 years old and still not playing consistently in the NHL

Adam Hall – Tampa Bay Lightening –  16 pts in 75 games and also doing well in the faceoff circle with 55%

Dominic Moore – Tampa Bay Lightening – 27 pts in 70 games.  Making a name as a defensive center and in the FO circle with 53%.

Fredrik SjostromToronto Maple Leafs – Doing the same thing in Toronto as he did for us.

Colton Orr – Toronto Maple Leafs – One of the best heavyweights in the NHL.  We still miss him.

Blair Betts – Philadelphia Flyers – One of the best defensive centers in the game.

Others

Jaromir Jagr – KHL

Mikal Nylander – not playing

RJ Umberger – Columbus Blue Jackets - He was a prospect for a hot second but refused to sign.  Not a bad player but I will never forget him getting laid out in the playoffs.

Jason StrudwickEdmonton Oilers - Still playing for Renney.

I’m sure you all have other names to add and corrections.  Go at it.

Nice analysis

Good to see that the Rangers didn’t get burned by trading away/letting guys walk.

The only one that they seemed to really lose out on was Lisin for Korpikoski, but then again who knows what kind of minutes Korpedo would be getting under Torts.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Mar 28, 2011 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

I kind of disagree with the Jody Shelley comment. I think we’re better off with letting him go and having the Prust-Boyle-Fedex line. That line has a HUGE scoring punch in addition to toughness, and 2 of those guys are completely willing to drop the gloves and knock a player out

by The Shiv on Mar 28, 2011 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with your disagreement of the Shelley comment. No need for him at 3 years. Not that I liked Boogaard’s deal, but as an aging enforcer that commitment was too long.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Mar 28, 2011 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I can understand the disagreeing on Shelley but based on lack of speed and lack of any game since getting concussed I would prefer to have Shelley right now than Boogy. Shelly seemed to contribute when he was on the ice. Boogy other than the one goal and fighting never really showed up.

by Leetch4prezofNYR on Mar 28, 2011 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

haha well granted he hasnt played a game in a while, i’d rather say that neither player really fits into the system. jody shelley is no doubt better than boogaard, but shelley didnt want to resign with us

by The Shiv on Mar 28, 2011 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Shelley wanted to resign...

….but he wanted a 3 year deal… Sather only wanted to give him one. then he went and signed Boogaard for four…

Some adds

Might want to add Prucha to the KHL list

Also Hutchinson never actually played for the Rangers and you may want to add Bobby Sanguinetti!

Otherwise that’s a pretty accurate and extensive list, nice job

by caonenine on Mar 28, 2011 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

I couldn’t find Prucha when I was putting the list together. That’s a kid I liked but never put the same numbers together without Jagr.

And yes Hutchinson never played I just remembered him from the Cullen trade and hype.

Hey I miss having a heavy weight that could win a fight, skate, and be ready to play every game. If I remember correctly we picked him up for Dale Purinton from Boston before the season started. No goon came into the garden thinking he could run our players without getting into a fight and possibly getting knocked out by Orr. I will always remember Orr getting under Crysby’s skin and making Pittsburgh take penalties as Orr kept hitting Crysby and taking him off his game.

by Leetch4prezofNYR on Mar 28, 2011 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Orr was a great story. He did the same thing Boyle did after the Rangers picked him up off of waivers from Boston. He took power skating lessons that summer and the following season Renney was able to give him decent minutes. I was always surprised that Orr left NY. I figured he would have given the Rangers a slight discount since they basically elevated Orr from career AHL goon to viable NHL player.

Malhotra and Korpikoski

As others have pointed out:

Manny Malhotra (Ranger ‘98 – ’02) – Has 30 points in 72 games for the Canucks this season. Rangers 1st round draft pick in ’98 (7th overall). Never had more than 16 points in a season as a Ranger. Played all over the place during the dark years and the originally expected scoring never came. Currently out indefinitely due to catching a puck to his eye earlier this month. May never play hockey if surgery isn’t successful.

Lauri Korpikoski (Ranger ‘08-’09) – Has 38 points in 76 games this season playing for the Coyotes. Rangers 1st round pick in ’04 (19th overall). Had 14 points in his only season as a Ranger. Played on the 4th line and was an excellent penalty killer. He is getting progressively better and will be a 20 goal scorer this year.

it seemed to me(and still),he had a bad game,Torts sent him down and he never got his confidence or mojo etc back. Torts can really say things to players that gets to them, and I bet this was alot like that. Valli was a flyer KILLLER!!!!!!!

I personally thought he was pretty good. I remember it the same, a blowout, then to the doghouse, then the minors where he fell apart more then poof gone.

He was pretty good for a time and served his purpose, but then completely fell apart last year. Felt bad for him but he was genuinely awful last season.

He had ALOT of bad games

Kondratiev now plays in the Eastern Conference finals for the KHL Salavat Yulayev. The lead in the series with Metallurg Magnitogorsk Sergei Fedorov 2-1. Kondratiev is considered a good defender.

Fedor Fedorov played in the Western Conference finals for the KHL Atlant Mytischi. The lead in the series with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Pavol Demitra 3-0. Reputation F.F. in the KHL he is not the most good. Also played for Atlant Ilya Gorokhov and is considered a good defender.

I loved him. He’s playing overseas, in Finland I believe.

The player who broke my heart was Tomas Kloucek. Last I heard he was playing in North America in a minor league. I had such high hopes for that guy. He hit like a freight train and could skate. Then he blew out his knee and it all went down hill.
