Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Has Glen Sather found a way out of his latest bad contract?

Photo

When New York Rangers General Manager Glen Sather signed tough guy Derek Boogaard to a 4-year, $6.5 million contract last summer, the hockey world shook its collective head, sighed, and muttered "there he goes again." And before the giant enforcer was felled by a concussion in early December, it looked like Sather had in fact saddled his team with yet another albatross contract.   Unable to compete -- or keep up -- at a satisfactory level for head coach John Tortorella, Boogaard rarely saw more than four or five minutes of ice time a night, sometimes playing as few as three or four shifts in a game.

Boogaard's injury -- he's not expected to play again this season -- has allowed Sather to avoid having to make any tough decisions this year. But there are three more years remaining on his contract.  And with the Rangers needing to re-sign a handful of core restricted free agents this summer, and likely to pursue big-ticket free agent Brad Richards on July 1st, Boogard's $1.625 million worth of cap space must look awfully enticing.

Enter Andrei Nazarov, head coach of KHL goon squad Checkhov Vityaz.  You know, the team famous for giving NHL/AHL-rejects Chris Simon, Darcy Verot, Brandon Sugden and Josh Gratton a place to ply their trade.

Star-divide

In addition to his duties with Vityaz, Nazarov, a former NHL pugilist himself, is also an assistant coach for the Russian national team.  In that role, he is tasked with being the liaison between the team and the Russian players currently playing in the NHL.  Nazarov was in New York for Tuesday's tilt between the Rangers and Buffalo Sabres, checking up on Russian Ranger Artem Anisimov.  But as Sport-Express reporter Vasily Osipov reveals in his post-game interview with Nazarov, the veteran of 571 NHL games and 1,409 penalty minutes also spoke with his former Minnesota Wild teammate Boogaard, and may have had a secondary purpose for his trip...

- And how would you comment on your interest in Boogard?

- It's clear that nothing has been decided yet, and that general manager Alexei Zhamnov is ultimately in charge of personnel questions for Vityaz.  But I've known Derek ever since we played together for Minnesota, when he was taking his first steps in the NHL.  Even then I guessed that Boogard would make some noise in the League.  And that's happened.

- I'll phrase the question in another way: during your trip through the NHL are you searching for a fighter for Vityaz?

- First of all I'm here on national team business.  But -- I won't hide -- the problem you mentioned is solved...

Like all reports in the Russian press, this one should be taken with a lump of salt until confirmed (or denied) by a North American source. In the meantime, Nazarov's comments should provide ample fodder for Rangers fans anxious to find a way to free up salary cap space to sign prized center Brad Richards while retaining this summer's crop of restricted free agents, which includes forwards Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Brian Boyle, and defensemen Michael Sauer and Matt Gilroy.

For Nazarov's comments on Ranger forward Anisimov, visit Beyond the Blueshirts.  Osipov also spoke to Anisimov after the game. A translation of that conversation will appear at Beyond the Blueshirts in the coming days.

doubt it. he wont go to russia and take less money. its not like he has the talent to play with an NHL team and thinks hes getting snubbed

Probably doesn’t even need that much. he is already getting our money. I’d think he would do it for an extra $1m per year, especially with the sweetheart tax deal over there.

I don’t think that’s how it works. I believe it is a loan situation and we still pay for him but it does not count against the cap.

I still don't think Boogy's contract is as bad as everyone makes it out to be

It’s 1.65 mil a year TOTAL. Orr is a $1 mil per cap hit, and isn’t nearly as good as a player or a fighter. In the games Boogaard played, he never once HURT us, and I think more often then not, he created a spark when we needed it, even without fighting.

Torts doesn’t like him, and Torts is the coach (for now), but maybe if Johnny T spent less time worrying about the skill level of his 12th forward, he wouldn’t have on the playoff bubble for the third straight year.

by BuckarooClub on Mar 3, 2011 5:12 PM EST reply actions

And if overpaying Boogie by about $500,000 per year for the next three years prevents the Rangers from overpaying Richards by $3 million per year for the next 7, Boogie’s contract may be the best FA contract Sather ever signed.

by LJR on Mar 3, 2011 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

or maybe the contract is bad because no one in their right mind would pay all that money in a 4 year deal for a position that is not needed in this day and age…booger is an enforcer without a role and is dead weight that shouldnt have been signed in the first place

Exactly, if everyone was healthy right now, when would you ever possibly sit someone to give Boogaard a spot? I wouldn’t even do it against Philly. I would definitely rather overpay Richards by that amount, he is a 1st line player, even 5 years from now he will be 2nd line at worst.

by BigB22 on Mar 3, 2011 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Boogy has shown a willingness to adjust his game

They told him they wanted him to come in lighter, he came in lighter. It’s a start. With his size and muscle mass, he’s never going to a gazelle out there, but I think he does more then just fight. He FLATTENS guys with good, legal, body checks. He’s not hitting high, or using elbows, if anything he might be guilty of “finishing” a check or two he could avoid, but with our PK I don’t even mind that. When Boogy gets a guy, he slows them down for a game.

Traditional enforcers and staged fights might be GOING away, but they’re not GONE. There was alot of nonsense could have been put to bed quicker if Boogy was in the lineup. Nobody wants to mess with the guy. If we had a real top 6, who could produce, no one would care at all who our 12th forward was. The 4th line would be the offensive afterthought it should be, and Boogy would take his 6 shifts a night, stand up for someone if he had too, and just go out and throw the body if he didn’t.

by BuckarooClub on Mar 3, 2011 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

Again, with Fed and Gabby healthy, whose spot would you give to Boogaard?

by BigB22 on Mar 3, 2011 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

Does it matter?

The problem is the who the top 11 forwards are, not our 12th.

by BuckarooClub on Mar 3, 2011 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

so you’re willing to spend 4 years and 1.6 per on a guy whose only asset is throwing the body when that cap could have been saved to maybe make a deal for a center at the deadline or before then?

For a guys who’s THE BEST at what he does, it doesn’t bother me that much. At what point were we 400 – 600K away from adding a center? The guys WE NEED to bring in are top end talent. $400K doesn’t make or break a deal with guys like that.

by BuckarooClub on Mar 4, 2011 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

400k full season hit is more than that at the deadline. Capgeek’s down, so I don’t have the exact number, but it’s around 4x as much by the deadline.

That means the full $1.65m that didn’t need to be spent on an enforcer allows them to fit Richards (as an example) nearly by itself.

We had most of that this season with Boogy out

and it didn’t help us get what we needed. Plus, you still need to pay SOMEONE to dress their, so it’s like your getting his WHOLE salary to apply to another player. For the small amount of cap it takes up, and with the plethora of issues we have everywhere else, I don’t think Boogy’s cap hit is as much as an issue as everyone makes it out to be.

by BuckarooClub on Mar 4, 2011 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

Based on the results we're getting from Torts "Teaching"

I think it’s safe to say that if he was healthy, a Boogy led goon squad might give us a BETTER chance of winning.

by BuckarooClub on Mar 4, 2011 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

while he may be the best at what he does

its an unneeded asset because we have guys who could throw the body but also produce on the score board, besides how many of those bone rattling checks would be called for boarding in this NHL? I believe that a whole season of Boogaard in the lineup would be a lot worse than the team is without him, yes he’s a 4th line guy and the 12th forward, he would be a defensive and offensive liability…there is zero point to having boogaard on this team besides something for the fan base to joke about

He's neither a defensive or offensive liability

For starters, as I’ve said before, we need to find players for spots 1 – 6 who produce, so that offensive production from our 4th line doesn’t matter to begin with. On defense, in the games he played, he did nothing to make himself a liability either. To use a player like Boogy effectively, I think you need to give him some slack and LET him take himself out of position when he thinks he can land a big hit. If he misses, or is late, it could mean a penatly, or an odd man rush, but when he connects (even if he takes an occasional boarding call) he’s gonna slow the guy he hit down for the rest of the game, and take the other teams focus off the game.

I’m sure their are other options who could produce a positive result in the number 12 forwards spot, but sending Boogy out to play the game he can seems to be the easiest to me. As I said to George above, if he was healthy, and we sent out a Boogy led goon squad for the rest of the season, our chances would be alot better then the are now.

A fourth line of Boogy, Newbury and Wiese. Prust and Aves on the third line mixing it up, creating chances for Boyle. Sauer on the second pair and McCabe on the third (if the jaw was healed) mixing it up with anyone who got too close to Hank. Get the opposition SO focused on what the 3rd and 4th lines might do, they forget about lines 1 & 2. With the spotlight off them, maybe some of those guys sticks loosen up.It can’t be WORSE then what we’re doing now.

by BuckarooClub on Mar 4, 2011 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

if teams are getting distracted by the 3rd and 4th lines

That’s bad coaching on their part. And boogaard is a liability because of his lack of skating ability, correct me if I’m wrong but even on the 4th line you have to play offense and defense and that requires end to end skating. How does boogaard help there? By staying the neutral zone just ramming guys? Sorry Buck, there is no way that Booger helps this team

People make too much of his "lack of skating ability"

Before he got hurt, he wasn’t hurting us with his play on the 4th line.

making too much of his lack of skating ability?

isnt that one of the essential parts of hockey…to be able to skate with your opponent down both ends of the ice?

You’re implying he can’t skate at all. That’s not the case. He’s not the swiftest or skater, and you can’t really expect him to be with a frame like his, but he can hold his own on a 4th line.

We’re not going to agree on this, and that’s fine. As I’ve said again and again, it’s our 12th forward. I just think Boogy gets picked on too much, and largely unfairly, for a guy who not only held his own, but exceeded expectations when he was healthy.

Neither one of us is going to change. Think it’s time to “agree to disagree”
