Rangers Analysis: Blueshirts Face Tough Schedule to Finish Season
The New York Rangers have only fourteen games remaining in the regular season and currently are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 74 points. If you remember a week back we set the postseason cutoff in the East at about 90 points. Right now, considering how the teams in the playoff race are performing, 90 points still seems pretty reasonable at the moment. So that would mean the Rangers would have to get a minimum of sixteen points out of their next 14 games. That is approximately eight wins, which appears to be a simple task, right?
Wrong. Taking a look at the schedule for the remainder of the season, the Rangers have some very tough opponents coming their way. Starting with the western road trip this week, New York will have to face two teams that both possess more points than them. The Anaheim Ducks are in the thick of the incredible playoff scramble in the Western Conference with 75 points and are currently on a three game winning streak. The Sharks, meanwhile, are in third as they lead their division with 82 points. Those are two solid hockey clubs that are going to require the Rangers to play above average hockey.
Once they get past that, the Rangers then come back to the East where they will square off with the likes of the Canadiens, Penguins, Bruins (x2), Sabres, Flyers and Devils just to name a few. Of those six teams, four of them are ahead of the Rangers in the standings, and the two that aren't are making a noteworthy push towards a playoff spot.
So while the past two wins against the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers have been encouraging from the standpoint that the Blueshirts turned around a losing streak and have been able to earn four big points, they have their work cut out for them in the final month of the regular season. I can easily say that they should be able to build off of Sunday's slaughtering of the rival Flyers, but with how inconsistent the team has been since the All-Star break, there really is no telling what will happen from this point on.
The thing that makes me a bit nervous going down the stretch here is that the Rangers are a relatively young team and do not have much experience in a predicament such as this one. Thankfully, though, they have a veteran coach in John Tortorella that has been going through this mad end of the season scramble since some of us were in diapers.
Tortorella, believe it or not, will have a major impact on the team's ultimate fate this season. Let's face it; he is a big reason the Rangers are in playoff position right now. Like I have said in the past, he believes in his players and they believe in him. There is a bond there that's only helped this team be successful all year long. And as we saw yesterday against the Flyers, he will support his players just as they support him. Sometimes he has to lose his cool behind the bench in order to do so, but if it is effective then I have no problem with that at all.
There are going to more ups and downs as the Rangers play out the final fourteen games here, but I have a strong belief that they will be able to clinch a playoff spot before game 82 this season. Once that happens, everything that has occurred over the past six months is forgotten because the second season - the playoffs - begin, and everyone starts off with a clean slate for those.
The Rangers have a challenging schedule to close the season out, but we've seen them overcome adversity time and time again this year. When they get going they can be a pretty magical hockey club, and when that's the case, you never know just how far they can actually go.

Western Road Trip
According to the numbers, its our two favorite things. Playing away from the Garden(20-13-1) AND playing west teams (10-6-0). recipe for much needed points.
Important games
These games will prove if we are a playoff team. If we can take 3 of 4 from the Ducks and Sharks I’d be very happy, those are 2 tough teams to beat. And by tough I mean they can get some good hits and make us pay if we don’t play smart enough. And playing the Sabres and Canadiens will also be 2 important games, if we want to get in the 6th seed, we must beat the Canadiens, and if we don’t want to lose any ground then we must beat the Sabres. They Sabres have 3 games in hand on us and are only 2 points back, that means unless they lose 3 straight games, they’re gonna pass us.
Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.

I’m having trouble understanding how these teams that were horrible all season just got a huge confidence burst and are doing so well now. blows my mind. I hate the devils with a passion but its amazing how the entire season they sat in last and all of a sudden there almost back to the top. I wish we were capable of slacking off the entire first half of the season just to rise quickly at the end. Probably which makes watching us lose that much more annoying because our boys actually put in hard work all season just to watch it slip away at the end. This team works the hardest and I can’t see any other team right now deserving a playoff spot more than these guys . Even if they lose in it they still deserve a spot.

If Gaborik gets back from wherever's he's been, we'll be fine
I agree. The teams chasing the Rangers have also been inconsistent. Eventually the Devils will roll a 7. I don’t think that any team they play down the stretch is unbeatable. It would be interesting to know how many games the Rangers play against teams that played the night before. The good thing about games in hand is that there are more opportunities for points. The bad thing is that these teams will play a lot of games down the stretch.

i absolutely have faith just annoys me. I thought the major popularity of Crosby penguins and ovechkin capitals was annoying, hearing about the devils every time i turn on the tv or nhl.com is worse.
Great post. I say beat the habs, buffalo, devils and flyers is the priority. I went through it with my gmen, god forbid I go through the same tie breaker loss bullshit with the Rangers.

8-6 for the Rangers equals no playoffs
Lets face it, regardless of the actual standings, Buffalo is ahead with their games at hand, and they are playing great. The only shot at the playoffs is beating out Carolina, who also sit technically 1 point ahead in the standings. Not to mention the Devils who are only 4 points back (if they win their 3 games at hand and given their recent history, they will)
Anything less than 10-4 and its an early golf season
We'll be fine
There’s nothing to worry about. We will make the playoffs and we will win the Stanley Cup

Bit of a stretch going from squeaking into the playoffs and winning the Cup. I like that you can dream, I merely hope you don’t set yourself up for disappoint if they don’t make the playoffs, or get bounced in 5-6 in the first round.
It's easy to look at the standings and say an 8th or 7th seeded team has no chance
but look at the Flyers last year. They barely got in and everybody though they’d be bounced out in the first round, but not only did they reach the Stanley Cup finals, they overcame a 3 – 0 series deficit to get to that point, so I never give up hope

Buffalo, carolina and montreal have tough schedule too. Plus they play head to head and buffalo and carolina play head to head twice. The devils have the easiest schedule but in any case relying on the competitors results is last thing the rangers want to do now.
I agree the playoffs have begun. I guess i’m startimg to grow a beard.

Well said
Spot on summary of what needs to transpire in March/April. While I still like our chances, it’s going to be tough for sure, unless the team that just dominated the last 120 minutes continues to show up consistently.
My only gripe with your post, Nick, is re: Tortorella. I still believe, and have for the entire season despite the accollades he’s gotten this year from most everyone else, that it’s the players who are truely responsible for what’s been accomplished this year. Their talent, dedication starting right from the off-season (ref. Brian Boyle, for example) and youthful energy (Stepan, Zuc) has very little to do with the coach, I think, On the other hand, our much-less-than-adequate inconsistent starts and ineffective powerplay are clearly visible aspects of the team’s play than can and should be impacted by good coaching. This is where Tortorella and his staff have been obviously lacking from the get-go. Still, the team has over-achieved despite all of that and potentially season-threatening injuries to key players thanks to Staal’s All-Star minutes, Dubi and Cally’s leadership, and for the most part, Lundqvist’s above average play in net..
Anyway, let’s all keep our fingers and sticks crossed for a well-deserved berth…
