Chris Kreider Staying at Boston College

Photo

Ranger fans who have been dreaming about Chris Kreider on Broadway will have to wait a little longer.

If you've heard us talk about it here on the site and on the show, it should come as no surprise to hear that the Rangers 2009 First Round Draft Pick has opted to remain at Boston College next year.

From BCEagles.cstv.com:

Kreider recorded 24 points - 11 goals and 13 assists - in 32 games as a sophomore this winter. He missed five games in March because of a broken Jaw. The Boxford, Mass., resident earned Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors last winter and participated in the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships in Germany. He has tallied 47 points - 26 goals and 21 assists - in 70 games during his two seasons at Boston College.

Kreider was adamant when he was drafted about going to BC, and had given no indication that he was in any hurry to turn pro.

Thanks to Jess Rubenstein of The Prospect Park for the heads up.

like i told Jess on twitter

this is the right move, I wanna see him start dominating Hockey East and let him progress slowly…no need to rush him

“start” dominating hockey east?
Have you watched kreider against BU lol

He tears us apart when we play BC. Granted, our team has been much weaker since the 09 champion team with Gilroy, Colin Wilson, Shattenkirk, and Yip. Kreider has scored some absolutely fantastic goals against us, and I can’t wait to see what he can do. But I’m definitely not against the move from a Ranger perspective (it sucks from a BU perspective lol). Let him get stronger, work on his game a bit more. I look forward to another year getting to watch him up close. We all know the talent is there in this kid.

I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

Problem is he SHOULD have been done with that THIS SEASON. I think getting him into an environment where its more about HIS development, and less about school pride would be a big step back towards fufilling 1st rd pick potential.

by BuckarooClub on Apr 14, 2011 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know where Kreider will be next season, but if every prospect stuck to their initial declaration, Stepan and McDonagh would not be a part of the Rangers, and the Rangers would probably be working on their short games right now.

by XLII on Apr 11, 2011 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

completely different circumstances…because of the positions each of them played they developed differently. With Kreider being a pure goal scorer that talent takes longer to refine and any progress could be lost if he goes pro and has a set back (see grachev). Stepan and McDonagh had skill sets that made it so that their jumps to the professional game were much smoother and McD had to wait half the season till he was deemed ready for action on the big club

Ok, now the similarities: the Rangers want Kreider in their organization, like they wanted Stepan and McDonagh, they are gonna give him the same dog and pony show they gave the former Badgers, and talk of seven figure salaries is sure to make anyone reconsider his decision to remain an amateur.

by XLII on Apr 11, 2011 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Jump.....to......conclusions

Now, the scenario I’m about to paint is not to be treated as “likely”. It may not even be “possible”.

If you recall, last year at the conclusion of the Frozen Four tournament (when Kreider’s Eagles beat McDonagh/Stepan’s Badgers), it was reported (on the Wisconsin website and picked up everywhere, that Ryan McDonagh was returning to Madison for his senior year, and was expected to be (or may have even been named) Captain.

He shows up at the Ranger’s June prospect workouts, gets a chance to meet and greet, play with other prospects – and lo and behold ends up signing an ELC shortly thereafter.
And now, he’s a top-four defensive pair in the NHL……

While I personally believe that the best move HOCKEY-wise for Chris would be to turn pro (even if he spends a year in the AHL), there’s clearly more that will go into the decision than that – and if he decides to return to BC – I wish him all the best, and an injury-free junior season….. (please please please)

most likely. He’d get an ATO (Amateur Tryout Offer) and play in the AHL playoffs

Weird how Hagelin, Yogan and Mcilrath just jump into the line up.

I understand the need to get these guys experience, but it must suck to be the 6th defenseman or third / fourth liner all season for the Whale and lose your position overnight.

BTW- Grachev is having a tremendous +/- year down there. Probably time to think of him as a third line option barring an explosion in camp.

What are you talking about? When did we have ANY chance at drafting Brayden or Luke Schenn? Never, they were both top 5 picks. Same thing with Kane and Skinner, we haven’t had the 1st pick overall in ages, and we were nowhere near the position to draft Skinner, our scouting and young kids are great, this is an awful post.

After reading the article, I was taking a look at some guys who’ve staid and some who’ve left. Thought I’d throw there names into the mix for discussion/comparison, and just have a little fun with the format.

I wouldn’t say I’m “bitter” but I find it hard to understand, and a bit disapointing. If the Rangers called up a player from Hartford, and he declined to come up because he wanted to play in the Calder Cup Playoffs, we’d all say he was nuts. Kreider is essentially CHOOSING to stay in a lower level of hockey. The Organization has made it clear that they want him to move on, and Kreider won’t.

Chris Kreider has an opportunity to get a step closer to playing in the best league in the world, for the most important trophy in all of hockey. He’s passing on it, and slowing down his development. College is fine for a year or two, but if you’re going to be a top player, you can’t waste 4 years of your development playing 35 games a season.

by BuckarooClub on Apr 12, 2011 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

you can’t decline a call up…you have a choice to sign with a team or not its a difference. I don’t see how its slowing his development, Gordie Clark measures players on if they have dominated their level before suggesting a promotion. I’m quite sure he’s talked to BC and Kreider to see how he has been progressing and if he has been dominating the NCAA and if Gordie and the player development team feels that he hasn’t shown them enough and they probably told him to stay in college and develop his skills further

Yes, better idea is to deny it's happening

Just tell ourselves the Rangers and Gordie Clark BEGGED him to stay in school and continue his development. We spent a first round pick on this kid. Anytime there’s a suggestion of giving up first round picks for offer sheets, we hear cries about how we can’t, because we need those players. This is a kid who could care less about what we need, and what is tradionally the best path for player development, because HE’D prefer to play where HE wants.

by BuckarooClub on Apr 12, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m with you Buckaroo. I don’t think some people are quite getting it. Good for him that he wants to stay in school and get an education. But why don’t we say the same ‘good for him’ when someone signs a huge contract but doesn’t produce? They want him to join the organization and start producing.

The Rangers used a 1st draft pick on him. They have a vested interest in his development. It’s like they hired him for a job while still in school and are politely asking him to take specific courses to prepare himself for the job they want to hire him for. And he is choosing not to.

I am not saying there is a right or a wrong here, just a what it is. Not a good sign if you are a Ranger Fan. If I was Krieder’s Father, ok maybe different story, but I’m not and am looking at this from an Ranger Organization perspective.

You could also expand on this a bit and say it shows the type of character you are dealing with. Someone who will put themselves before the organization but it might be a bit premature….still can’t help but thinking it.

As a guy who played through college, and grew up wanting to be a hockey player, I can’t understand it. You get the offer to set yourself towards, what should be, every young hockey players dream – The NHL – and you say no. Every level you move up, the talent level gets better and the number of spaces get smaller. Being “good” or “fast” or any other talent alone isn’t enough. You have to want it more too. This isn’t showing me the he wants it.

by BuckarooClub on Apr 13, 2011 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Well in his defense he didn’t really have the standard hockey upbringing. didn’t he just kinda fall into it late? Seems it was something he was just good at, not necessarily a hearts desire.

Maybe its just immaturity. That is not a good thing but it can be outgrown. But it bothers me too that he just doesn’t ‘want it’ it sooo bad..a Messier he will never be.

I won't totally knock the NCAA's

I think if you’re projecting to be a top NHL player, you shouldn’t be there for more then two years. For an American born player, hoping to be a top NHL player, who wants to stay in the states, I think a couple years in USHL when you’re 16-17, followed by 2 years of NCAA hockey isn’t a bad path. Getting SOME ’junior hockey" in before you go pro is a big help. Going from short HS seasons, to short college seasons, to 70 games (sometimes 5 in a week) in the AHL is a big jump.
