Rangers Recap: Game 2 Loss to Caps Puts Rangers Back, 2-0, in the Series

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 15: Coach John Tortorella, Artem Anisimov #42, Erik Christensen #26 and Vaclav Prospal #20 of the New York Rangers wait for the final buzzer in their 2-0 loss to the Washington Capitals in Game Two of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals during the 2011 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at Verizon Center on April 15, 2011 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

In Game 1 of the series, the Rangers' effort was acceptable despite the loss. I don't feel the same can be said of the effort in Game 2. By the night's end, the Rangers looked like a depleted team lacking confidence and once again, did not challenge Washington goaltender Michal Neuvirth as often as they should have. Now trailing in the series two games to none, the Rangers need a response Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, otherwise this series will be over rather quickly.

The Blueshirts actually got off to a good start and played a strong first period tonight. They came out hitting, they found ways to maintain possession of the puck on the forecheck and were outshooting the Caps, 13-7, at the conclusion of the opening stanza. But, as usual, they came out of the period with no goals on the board.

Someone must have taken charge of the Washington locker room during the first intermission, because they took the ice as a different team in the second period. The Capitals began to take over the game slowly but surely by controlling in the offensive zone and also tightening up defensively. Their first goal came at 2:11 of the period on a great play set-up by Washington's third line. Brooks Laich fought off a Matt Gilroy check behind the net and then one-handed the puck to Marcus Johansson, who fed Jason Chimera perfectly in the slot for one-timer goal.

Shortly after, Ryan McDonagh was sent to the box for what I felt was one of the worst calls of this series so far. Ryan was simply clearing the crease by putting Boyd Gordon on his rear end, but the officials somehow saw that as roughing (???) and to the box went McDonagh. And, of course, the Caps would capitalize with the man advantage when the puck found Jason Arnott on a lucky bounce and he put it past a sprawled Henrik Lundqvist to make it 2-0.

From that point on, Washington did something they have not exactly been known for in the past. They defended their lead and defended it well. They pushed the Rangers' rush to the outside against the boards and limited their scoring chances. As a result of this, New York was held to just three shots in the second period and six in the third. Again, Neuvirth didn't have to work all that hard in order to get the shutout tonight.

Star-divide

Marian Gaborik was disappointing in my opinion. He played so well in Game 1 and despite having four shots tonight, he wasn't as effective as he was earlier in the week. For most of the game he was invisible and when you did notice him, he was given no space by the Caps' defense and ended up turning the puck over. This was the case for most of the forwards tonight, so you cannot only put the blame on Gabby, but more is expected of him than the rest of the lineup, and he did not deliver on this night.

I thought Sean Avery, on the other hand, was great in his series debut. He had three shots on goal in 10:22 of ice time and worked very well with linemates Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust.  This trio generated some great scoring chances in the third period, but again, they could not find the back of the net. I think head coach John Tortorella will be keeping them together for Game 2, though.

The Rangers need more than just one line going if they want to climb back into this series, though. They have just one goal in seven periods played in the series, and that one goal came from a defenseman. Neuvirth has been good, but he has not been forced to be great. The Rangers need to get to that kid in front of the home crowd on Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday, that's a series-deciding game for the Rangers. If they fall behind 3-0, there will be an extremely minute chance they are able to mount a comeback of that magnitude. 2-1 is a whole lot different compared to 3-0, so the Blueshirts must get the job done on Sunday at MSG if they want to keep hope alive here.

A lot of that will depend on the play of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who was excellent once again in this tilt, making a total of 16 saves including a breakaway stop against Alex Ovechkin. If only he could get some goal support....

That's all I have to say about this stinker, but I'm sure you all have a lot more to add, so have at it in the comments.

Yup

That McDonaugh penalty was bogus. I was screaming at my TV. I thought this was playoff hockey where that’s overlooked….

Overall another hard fought game. Not too much to bitch about except that that breaks didn;t fall the Rangers way.

If they play the same way the next two games the Garden gods should be on their side and the breaks will fall our way.

Then it’s a brand new series

Nothing wrong the the McD play...

Classic clearing the crease. The one that I thought was even worse was the call on Feds, even more ridiculous.

Classic clearing the crease

…after the whistle.

I agree it was kind of soft (seemed like Gordon wasn’t prepared and hence fell easily), but it’s not like the puck was right there loose in the crease.

As soon as it happened, I knew McDonagh was going to the box.

Feds probably wouldn’t have gotten called (I hope) if he didn’t have his stick up towards the dude’s neck. If it was a simple shove, they may have let that go by.

McD’s penalty was changed to “exposing opponent’s ability to skate” – 2 minutes.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

by SimpleManiac on Apr 16, 2011 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

And where was the penalty for shoving the defender on top of the goalie?
Sauer did not touch the puck, Lundqvist had it covered. If Avery pushed Ovechkin on top of Neuvirth in that situation he’d be gone for sure.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

What game were you watching?

<Overall another hard fought game. Not too much to bitch about except that that breaks didn;t fall the Rangers way.blockquote>
The second period they looked like boys among men with no effort whatsoever.
And as far as the MdD penalty, it was well after the whistle, and they almost had to call it. They better not play the same at MSG or this will be a sweep.

It would be nice if we’d see, I dunno, maybe a pulse from Dubinsky. He’s been nearly invisible. People can crap on Gabby all they want and yes…he’s not converting. But at least he’s getting opportunities to throw something at the net. You’d have better luck finding Waldo than Dubinsky these past two games.
To be honest with you, this is a much different team than the Caps team the Rangers played in 09. This team we saw tonight is much more defensively responsible and just shuts down the opposition when getting a lead. And the Rangers, if they get down a couple, don’t really have the firepower to fight back. I don’t think the Rangers are playing that badly…the Caps are just better. If the Rangers can steal a hard-fought game 3, then we all may have something.

by NastyNate82 on Apr 15, 2011 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Other than the fact this loss means going down 2-0 instead of 1-0 in the series, and is thus more demoralizing, I actually was more encouraged by the effort the Rangers put in this game. I thought they played better tonight than they did on wednesday to be honest.

I was at the game, of course chearing on my Rangers. You really have to be there to understand how difficult of a place to play in the playoffs it can be. The energy can give a young goalie and extra boost or a shitty skater (Jeff Schultz) some extra energy, even though he showed none anyway. We need to win both games in New York to gain back the momentum. The caps are a very vulnerable team to making mistakes as they have a relatively young core of d men and a good set of wingers that are shaky on scoring. One thing is clear though, Ovechkin is not the dangerous weapon people think he is. But I want to see us come to New York with an extra sense of urgency, not get too tired, and win game three. Lets go rangers, beat the goons in red.

I went to a game there this year and the atmosphere is really annoying. I can understand it may tough to play there, but it has to be more distracting than intimidating for opposition.
I’ve never seen a group of people more proud of stupid, annoying noises, than in that DC arena.

It’s no more annoying at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg then it is at any other venue, especially when you take into consideration there is nothing else to cheer for within 300 miles. One of the toughest games to watch all year

I gave this team the benefit of the doubt or basically a free ride in these play-offs b/c 1) they worked so damn hard all year for the most part and more often than not got good results from it, enough so to at least make it in the play-offs and 2) they are mostly so young that ANY play-off experience is better than none. But that being said – tonight was very, VERY hard to stomach because it’s the veterans who are so disappointing and they don’t have any “rookie” excuse to fall back on.

Speaking of benefit of the doubt, I’ve also been a Gabby supporter thru most of the year despite his slump, mostly b/c just the fact he has the potential, the POTENTIAL, to rifle a 50 ft shot thru a D’s legs into the upper corner like very few can, the other teams have to at least match lines agst him which allows our other lines, in theory, to play agst less defensively capable lines. So really for that alone, he’s somewhat valuable. But that being said, after watching him now for 7 periods get chance after chance in good scoring position and half-heartedly shoot right at the logo like he’s a 4th line player vying for a job agst a Vezina-candidate just infuriates me. I’m sorry but in his case, the whole “at least he’s getting chances” works for Prust or Volsky or EC but not Gaborik – are you kidding me? He is totally capable of burying at least one of those chances. Bebe ain’t no Miler or Thomas, but he and everyone else are making him look that way. Some have postulated he’s hurt, but I’m fairly sure Prust, Girardi and Staal, among others are too and Leetch played ‘94 with a frozen sep. shoulder and friggin won a scoring-leading Conn Smythe to boot. Now Marian is no Leetch but, hurt or not, you can tell he’s not even trying to hit the top corner whereas every time, EVERY TIME, Ovi came down on Hank, except on his breakaway, he clearly shot for the corners. IDK maybe Gab should mentally treat Bebe like he’s a Vezina candidate so he takes tougher shots on him ,but the way he and everyone else is shooting, we’re making her look like one.

Dubinsky’s play is the other frustrating thing to watch. Yes, he misses Cally – for sure. But again, and I realize he’s no Alex, just think back to the 2 on 1 Dubi had in the first. You could tell he was thinking pass pretty much the whole way in whereas Ovi, even if it’’s a 2 on 1 or 3 on 2, thinks shot all the way. I’m not trying to make this an Ovi love fest, but as much as I respected him b4 this series, even when he doesn’t score, he impresses me every time he’s out there. It’ really unbeleiveable, actually and even more so that no one on our team can display just the same enthusiasm he has – forget the difference in talent. We should be thankful Boudreau’s stupid enough to put #8 on the point away from the net on the PP, otherwise they’d be more dangerous.

As far as McD penalty, while it may or not have been the right call, I did think it was definitely on the edge b/c he hit the guy well after the play was blown dead and the thought crossed my mind he might be in the box after the commercial, so it really was not so far-fetched. Some refs let that go, some don’t but the risk is always there. But considering how well McD has played, that’s the least of our concerns.

Other than that. I’m just hoping playing at MSG means upping our effort and overall 60 minute game, regardless of the results. That’s what made this team so much fun to watch and cheer for all year and hopefully that proud feeling comes back before it’s too late. ;)

by mgweissman on Apr 15, 2011 11:33 PM EDT reply actions

Great post Weissman. Look, I’ve been frustrated with Gabby since last season so I don’t have much to add about his play aside from being able to say “I told you so.” He’s a speedy wing but he’s lost his ability to burst and he turns over the puck whenever he tries to cut through the middle for an against the grain snap. Gabby loves the five hole and has a deceptive and quick wrister but he simply isn’t snapping the puck like he used to our diversifying his target areas. Maybe, well, I hope at least, he’ll start to play with some teeth but don’t count on it.

As for Dubi…he’s not commanding the puck like he did the first half of the year…don’t ask me why, I don’t know but he looks like a third liner out there most shifts.

I was very happy to see Avery out there tonight.

Step has been very tentative…almost like he’s afraid to get dirty or, more likely, to make a mistake. Too many Rangers are puck swiping instead of body crunching. We can’t play an even physical game against the Caps. Watching a game there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind who the more hard hitting team is. If I were the coach I’d tell the club to practically ignore the puck for one and a half periods and just hit every body that dares to move…but I think they’re afraid of taking penalties.

Staal looks very slow. Girardi looks weak.

Our team is tired.

Thanks and...

Good additional points about Gabby and Dubi. Marian should forget the five-hole which is a very low-percentage shot (just ask Joikenen) plus if Bebe closes it off, it makes him look like the star that he isn’t. Speaking of which, I was also very pissed how much Sam and Joe raved about Bebe after the first. Did they actually watch the montage that was put together of his saves? Those stops were so pathetically easy, it was ridiculous whereas Hank was flopping and lunging all over the place. Bebe didn’t have to stretch for anything and the best save of the night ultimately came from Erskine? Unbelievable. Stop saying how calm he looks. I’d be calm to if nobody tried to score a tough shot on me.

Like I originally siad, for Stepan this is all gravy about getting experience and in fact, I was very pissed to see him get so little ice time as the game progressed. Get him out there, for Christ’s sakes – who knows how much play-off time he’ll get in his career so use the damn kid, Mr “I’m goin’ with the kids” ! It was nice to at least see Sauer and McD out there killing penalties instead of completely draining Girardi and Staal to death, but just like the team is showing, or not showing, it’s true desire, the coaching staff is right there with ’em making bad decisions.

But anyway, let’s move on and not just get a good start Sunday, but play like our backs are to the wall the entire game and like the team that beat Philly 2x down the stretch, came back agst the B’s, dominated the Devils and even trounced these same Caps including once while their so-called “new” philosophy was being used. Defensive or not, they ain’t no Jacques Lemaire trapping Devils or Gainey-Selke-smothering Canadiens. We can definitely do it – and what better place than at MSG :)

Great point!

That’s the part that frustrates me too. Tortorella is so consumed with this friggin’ identity of grinding and cycling, I’m convinced he’s forcing Gaborik and EC and whomever else’s strength is playing a more creative game into a dump and chase style. Makes no sense and makes us very predictable as a team. Plus, all of our players constantly look more towards going to the boards than to the front of the net. There were times when instead of shooting from a good spot we literally “shot” it at the corner boards ?! At times, it’s like they can’t make up their minds b/c instinct and good hockey sense is telling them to go in front but habit and “philosophy” tells them to go along the wall. It really is quite disturbing to watch and I’m sure, many times, frustrating to have to play that way.

I'm positive that it has more to do with Gabby/EC being pusses than anything else

As unbiased as I can be, as unemotional as I can be, if that third period was the best we have to offer right now, we will be lucky if this makes it to 5 games. We have been completely man-handled for 5 of 7 periods, we broke even in the first tonight, (although I still think the period was far too fast-paced for this team) and we won the third period tonight when the Caps decided to just shut it down, but still had nothing to show for it. One can only hope we play with maybe a smidge more emotion in front of our own fans. I’m hoping for a Rangers-Sabers like comeback at home, and maybe with Drury on our team this time, we win game 5.

Dubinsky, I like ya, but you need to wake the fuck up. Frankly, the way I see things going with this guy, considering he already held out the last time contract negotiations came around, he will try for arbitration and if they award him top-6 money, walk away. I’m sorry, but walk away. You want to make a top 6 pay-check, play like a top 6 forward because right now, the announcers don’t even need to know your name.

Here is what I think needs to happen… we need to find some scrub goalie playing rec. hockey, stick some pads on him and put him in the damn net in practice and have our boys score all day long on this guy. Because if Hank is playing like this in practice, it’s no wonder our forwards have the confidence of a bald Britney Spears. And maybe play on a net 6 inches shorter all the way around in practice, because as it is now, we couldn’t get a shot on goal if we were playing with soccer nets.

When all is said and done though, we chose the red pill when we pushed to make the playoffs and for better or worse as fans, that is what we have. If I was given this choice a hundred times over, I would choose the red every time because there is nothing like “Let’s Go Rangers” chants in playoff hockey. Whatever happens from here on out, our boys WILL be better for the experience and whether we lose in 4, lose in 7, our win the damn cup, I am proud of this team, and proud to be a Ranger fan.

1 lousy goal and 47 total shots in 138 minutes is absolutely ridiculous. The Caps are playing like they want this series a lot more than we do. Simply put, Washington is a better team, while it looks like we’re running on fumes. Nice to see Avery inject some life into the offense, but still unable to put the goddamned puck in the net. Still not sure what the hell Zuccarello was doing in the lineup for game 1, but I digress… The Rangers are in desperate need of a true leader, somebody that can elevate their game and score a big goal when needed. Right now we don’t have anybody on the roster that fits the bill. Come on Gordie, find us the next Messier!
Hopefully, somehow, someway, we can still make a series out of this.

no doubt that line Dub-Cal-Ani, when healthy, is a force. split apart and without Cal they are almost non-existent. chemistry matters, you can’t just throw guys together and expect them to play well together. anyone who has played this game understands what it means to have guys out there with you that know exactly what you’re going to do, where you are, and what to expect. this mixing and matching of lines is failing, but not much they can do about it.

The Rangers offense is so poor

Lundqvist simpy can not allow a goal to be scored. He’s been pretty good these last two games but he has gotten virtually no help from the offense and that really is a shame.

According to NHL.com regular season stats:
Caps : 224 goals
Rangers : 233 goals

Rangers even have a better goal differential, +35 to the Caps’ +27.

This stats are slightly misleading because of our (Washington’s) offensive struggles the middle of the season but are still worth pointing out.

And look at Los Angeles and Nashville in the West, both of them only have 219 goals in the regular season. So the NYR are by no means the “least offensively skilled team in the playoffs” even with Callahan out. The Kings are missing Kopitar so that award probably goes to them.

And as for losing Callahan up front, we are without one of our best D men since the trade deadline in Wideman. Add in the fact Green may be vulnerable to hits and is not really logging the ice time we are used to seeing and that our main shutdown D pair consists of 2 (somewhat) rookie players in Carlson and Alzner and we do have some issues on D. But the forwards have committed to playing team D and that is what is making the difference in the series (and in the last part of the reg. season).

I think it was widely said in the press before the series started, but Lundqvist HAS to stand on his head and steal games for the Rangers to come out with this series. He has been great in goal so far (2.00 GAA is not bad by any count) but has not been able to steal one.

Still, it is practically a whole new series once they skate onto MSG ice.

if you watched the Rangers a lot this season, you’d know how wrong you are. This is, easily, the least offensively skilled team in the playoffs. Pointing to goals for the season is flawed, especially because we had a few “flukey” blowouts (two against the Caps, one against Philly) that account for 19 of those goals.
If you watched the Rangers all season, you would’ve noticed that lost a bunch of 1-goal low scoring games because we couldn’t capitalize on our chances…. you would’ve noticed that we made it “cool” to give goalies their first NHL shutouts, and make backups look like Vezina candidates. Those stats are more than “slightly misleading”. Don’t even try to pretend that the Rangers and Caps are anywhere close in terms of offensive skill.

I guess another good thing about being in the playoffs is the coaches and GM get to evaluate how everyone performs under the intense glare of NHL playoff hockey.
Right now, a lot of our guys deserve pretty low marks as far as stepping up.
With the rookies, it’s understandable of course, but not for veterans.
I have a feeling if this series continues the way it has gone so far, we may see a very different roster in the fall. At least I hope we do.

our offense is the worst in the NHL right now
its painful to watch
get to the blue line, stood up
get to the blue line, dump it in and nobody chases because their out of gas
finally get the puck in their zone and make some cute sloppy pass
finally get in their zone and instead of shooting, we cycle
the cycle doesnt work, I never want to see another cycle ever again
ugh this is f’n pathetic man
our offense is soooo bad, we cant even get quality shots on goal
maybe 1 or 2 chances tonight were actually what I would call shots on goal

Gaborik this dude better bounceback next season or its gonna get ugly
people ran Gomez out of town and we basically ran Drury out of town imagine what its gonna be like next season when Gaborik is playing this way
totally lame from one of the best scorers in hockey I thought

its amazing to watch Semin Ovy Backstrom Johanson get so many shots off that buzz right by the goalies head or go off the crossbar
our shots cant even get near the goalie

im sooooo mad right now
were better than this, our at least I thought

by Archie Barberio on Apr 16, 2011 2:09 AM EDT reply actions

this is whats driving me nuts

me make every opposing goalie look like Patrick Roy out there
they never test them, never pepper the guy with shots instead they cycle cycle cycle some more and it gets cleared out after about a minute of nothing
we try these cute passes but their always about 10 feet away

if I was the coach of this team I would be fed up
I would say
“SHOOT THE F’N PUCK”
I mean rebounds screen the goalie etc cheap goals are GOALS who cares
pepper their young goalie instead of cycling the whole godman game because it doesnt work
we are wearing OURSELVES out, the Caps are not breaking down with the cycle

first of all they cant even carry the puck in because the Caps are standing up high in that zone and making the Rangers dump the puck in and nobody chases or gets there in time because the entire team is gased out from cycling

worst gameplan ive seen from Torts in a while
its time to open it up and let off some shots
you got a few big guys stick them down low and screen this guy please for the love of god

Caps + Arnott + Wideman + Sturm are a COMPLETELY different team. Arnott in particular has been a force in the locker room and has (shockingly) helped Semin get fired up as the season came to a close.

In some ways, it was probably the poundings you gave us earlier in the year that forced them to realize they had to play better D and acquire some grit and experience up front.

Just some thoughts…. Eminger needs to be put in and someone rested. Obviously Avery,Boyle, Prust one of the only lines with life. Anisimov needs more playing time. I love the way they crashed the net, although too little too late. They need to do that all game. Anisimov simply needs t o play more. He will score. Plenty of hockey left. After the timeout, I thought we played well. When we check, finish our checks, forecheck, and backchek, other teams lose their steam. We need to punish them more and we can. The scoring will come. Bad call on MCD. I watched other games, and they let a lot worse go on, including some bad hits. They let all the caps cross checking go on.

Question…….. without watching all the plays over, is Avery or his line mates really offside all those times? Almost every time he carries the puck, the whistle was blown. I even laughed a few times it was so consistent.

Offsides

I think Avery was getting to cute around the blue line with the puck and was causing the offsides, it was annoying. But I dont think he’s seen this much playing time for awhile so might have been thinking too much rather then just getting the puck over the blue line and then thinking. Im not defensing the guy, but he has to know better.

A little help...

Can anyone answer these questions?
- Why does Christensen play, ever? I would rather dress 7 defensemen, especially since the “Pride of Bellmore” got stiff-armed on the first goal. I know, I know, he’s the “hero” of Game 1.
- Does anyone else think that Gaborik is still injured? His play has been so bad (I know, I know…he’s been playing real hard…7 million worth of hard play) that I actually feel bad.
- Do the Rangers ever practice the power play? (I know, I know…they are limited offensively but 1 for 31?)
- Why does Sullivan take out the dry-erase board with 5 seconds left, down by two? Maybe he drew a picture of a golf course. Or maybe it he drew a picture of Messier with a speech bubble that said, “Just win one face-off tonight, dick.”
- Has anyone else found Sam and Joe’s constant stroking of the “new Capital system” (i.e. defensive hockey or a la Lemaire) quite annoying? You don’t have to sell Ovechkin to me either – I know he is good. I love those guys but recently it has gotten bad. I guess they are doing their best with what they are watching.

Kudos to Avery for a real smart playoff game and the ageless pisano, Vinny Prospal. Would someone give that guy the “C” for Christ sakes?

I really hope MSG fans show some class and don’t do anything similar to that at the Garden. There is nothing good or funny about doing something like that, I really hope the fan(s) responsible were identified and faced some kind of punishment. I’d hate to see more drama like this going on in this series with a coach or a player getting suspended for something idiotic.

for what it's worth -

I know this is going to sound like I’m bashing D.C., but please hear me out … If you’ve lived here for a while and seen their fans in all sports (except the O’s for some reason), some of them are just awful. Not all of them mind you, and I’m NOT suggesting there aren’t bad apples that taunted Cliff Lee’s wife in NY, but I would put them ina catagory of “not knowing how to win”. Remember when UMD won the B-ball tourney and people died? How ‘bout them Redskins? If you’ve been to a game, there are ALWAYS stupid fights (with guys dressed as female pigs for some reason) to the point that the organization has enforced police in the stadium and posted signs for people to text their section and seat number to report abuse. I don’t remember seeing anything like this since the Vet had a jail and courthouse under the stadium. I hope no one takes this as city bashing – their are tons of very knowledgeable fans in D.C., but for some reason the bad ones are REALLY bad. Standing by to get blasted back on this one … BTW, was at the last game and almost got assaulted twice after the game (not before, of course) – to be fair, one of the guys actually appologized.

Not much to say. We were outplayed by a better team. If anyone thinks that the NYR are the better team in this is a bit crazy.

Other than that, some improved in game 2. More effort, more desperation, more physicality. Unfortunately, so did the Caps and they are just the better team. it was not a blow-out in either game against a good team at home, not a terrible sign.

Positives:

Stephan brought his game to a new level, which is a good sign for the kid after just 1 playoff game.

Sauer and McD seemed to improve as well. Remember this is our future.

Prust can play playoff hockey, but is anyone surprised?

Boyle played ok a well. Still would like to see him dominate more physically, but I think we will always be saying that.

I liked Feds game and Avery proved why he is better suited to pay right now that MZA.

Can you really expect more from Staal and Giradi?

Negatives.

Gaborik, yeah more engaged but needs to score. But we are not the only team with this problem, just look at CHi and other teams having issues scoring.

We said it all along but if EC is your #1 center, you aint gonna win shit. Guy can make a decent play with or without the puck for his life. Weakest goal mouth scrum I have ever seen in the playoffs. He barley waked at it and wound up in the corner after one little push.

Gilroy is just too weak, constantly out muscled and McCabe is too slow to cover up quick enough.

AA has been a disappointment, really hoped he could improve here but he hasn’t. That said its really what, his 3 playoff game?

But Dubi? I’m tired of making excuses for him. He talks such a big game but rarely delivers. He is strong enough to not disappear in playoff games, but he does.

So what do we have? A team with only one 1st line player who isn’t paying like one. The rest are 3/4th line players and nobody really stepping up at this point. 2nd D pairing is rookies who are still learning. Our 3rd pair is weak and forces our 1st pair to be over played.

But we knew this right?

Nah, You can expect it and they should be able to deliver it with match-up and the crowd behind them. Just don’t know if it will be enough if the Caps improve as well.

Really, as much gloom and doom there is in Rangerland and as pissed as I was at 4am, big picture is not terrible. Losing to a better team, not blown off the ice at all, keeping their star players in check for the most part. A bad penalty call, unfortunate deflection. Weak links are still weak links….at least it should make some decisions easier in the off-season.

agree with you and Frankiec

Down 2-0 going back to MSG isn’t the end of the series….a little home ice/home crowd is going to help a lot. Hopefully the officials will tilt the ice in the Rangers’ favor—that call on McDonagh was the end of the game last night. A bullshit call, it almost seemed designed to prolong the Caps’ momentum.

As bad as the Rangers looked last night, they weren’t that far out of the game. They played the Caps evenly in game 1 for a road team. I thought McCabe had his worst game as a Ranger last night….he cannot skate and he was repeatedly exploited last night, giving Caps too much space to work because he must yield such a cushion to their offensive players.

For me the biggest problem so far is Dubinsky. He has not shown up for either game this series, and considering the team is without Cally that is inexcusable. Otherwise, the Rangers’ defense is playing well, and Lundqvist is obviously very sharp now too. The other guy who looks lost and outclassed so far is Anisimov. Someone has to work with him in the offseason and bulk him up a bit, he is so easily overpowered out there….

Prole art threat.

If anything, they gave NY a chance to tilt the momentum. Nothing changes the flow of a game like a goal late or early in a period (and maybe a shortie).

Would you rather the refs not call a single penalty on the Caps?

Enough about the refs

This is play-off time so blaming the outcome of a game on 1 or 2 or even three calls is just so lame, it’s not even funny. And Dubi actually did that post Game 1, which really opened my eyes about his level of maturity. Plus Avery was clearly whining to the refs during the game. Shut the f up – all of them – and play the damn game. Even Tortorella made what almost sounded like a bitter snide comment about the call. Nice example your setting for the team. Anyone hear McD’s comments on the call against him? That’s how you respond and play when anything remotely questionable gets called and he’s only a 2nd half rookie for goodness sakes!. Like I said above, while I wasn’t happy about it, it’s the play-offs and scrums happen, etc. etc. plus I did think it was a late hit after the whistle and it really could’ve gone either way, forgetting what’s happened in other similar cases or in the playoffs in general..

We should be more upset and concerned with Dubi and/or Stepan’s lack of coverage in front on the first goal, not some flukey PP goal.

Nope - sorry - not allowed :)

Agree completely w/voice. We, as fans, represent the heart and soul of the team, so like players, we need to focus on what actually is important – esp. this time of year. Just listen to BOOOOOODreau’s rant about the refs DURING a game and how pathetic that sounded. He ain’t no player either, but regardless if it’s a player, coach, fan, co-stache wearer, whatever, talking about calls or refs or bad bounces is just plain bush league.

The only remotely possible exception I could think of to this would maybe, perhaps, possibly be Sabres fans for Hull’s OT Goal in Game 6. That one was probably pretty tough to take I’d have to imagine. Or maybe, perish the thought, if either of those two bogus icing calls when Bure stopped skating on June 14, 1994 had actually cost us a tying goal off the draw, we’d have a beef or two (imagine if we couldn’t change players back then – ouch!)

Otherwise – it’s all just one big whine….

In the offseason we need to really look into this character and see if he really is the answer to our problems. This guy has rested on his laurels for too fucking long and its time he paid the price for his lack of effort. I am sick and tired of players coming to New York thinking that they could just hang out at the clubs, open bench doors while hungover, and think that we would put up with it…WELL NO FUCKING MORE…its high time this bastard gets sent to the Canadian wasteland that is Edmonton as a punishment for his lack of effort

I also blame Chris Kreider

That son of a bitch should be here playing thrid and fourth line minutes instead of staying school. Like school is sooooooooooo important to professional athletes*. Kobe Bryant never staid in college LeBron James didn’t either, hell they didn’t even GO to college. Chris Kreider is hurting this team and should be officialy considered a bust.

*for all the minors reading this, stay in school, say your prayers, eat your vitamins and don’t tell your parents that some crazy blogger told you to leave school

He'd probably be playing his 3rd line minutes in Hartford

But the sooner he gets to that level, the sooner he COULD be here, if he pulls it together.

Not sure why most are not getting this. there is a long term plan with this team as most have said. And the ticking clock in Henrik. They projected Krieder to be in the line up with 1 yr of AHL play in 2 years. Now he will spend another full year at school and be expected to jump right to NHL?? Less likely. Possible, but if you are planning you would like to see how he performs in the AHL before you commit to him as a future piece. So this most likely pushes him back a year.

The ramification from this are legit. Now there is a gap at wing. Does it get filled by a FA? Less cap space for #1 C?

I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

I am not giving up yet

But let’s not forget that this team has been playing playoff games for the past 2-3 weeks.
And grabbing the 8th seed was the ultimate goal which they accomplished.
This team is done in all aspects. Let’s just give the caps as much hard time as we can an start figuring out things for the next season.
As I said many times, this team has exceeded the expectations, great job, blueshirts!

Prospal

Our best veteran has to be prospal, and the funny thing is he’ll probably be gone next year.

I think we should remove Drury and not allow him near the island of Manahattan for Sunday’s game. He slows everyting down.

Maybe we rely on Lundquist to much… put the back up in! (that’s a joike… kinda)

As a general response to Frankie's rants

Like everyone’s said, past the top 5 the draft is pretty close to a crapshoot. A lot of the FAs you’re suggesting are 3rd line type guys, which we have a plethora of on the team/in the system. What we really need is 1st line talent, something which is difificult to draft

Not all that difficult

Just miss the playoffs, toss a couple prospects in the final games of the season to give them a look, lose some extra games, and hope you get one of the first three picks.

See Chicago, Washington, Pittsburgh.

Tomorrow we win

Tomorrow we make the series 2-1.
And someone needs to be up 2-1. It just won’t be us but that’s okay.
Well tie it up Wednesday, because I will be there.

Then it will be a best of 3 from there.

Calmer than you are.

bummer

as 1 sided as it’s been, broadway was 6 minutes (and a questionable case of narcolepsy by the ref) from the series being 1-1. damn.
