Rangers Recap: Rangers Cut Capitals' Series Lead to 2-1
Despite being down 2-0 in the series, the Rangers were welcomed home to an indescribable feeling this afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Seeing the team take the ice just prior to the opening faceoff with thousands upon thousands of rally towels being whirled around across the entire arena brought about a special feeling. The special feeling that has followed this resilient team all throughout the regular season, and that's just what today's 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals was.... special.
The Rangers got off to their most energetic start of the series in this game, hitting everything in sight right out of the gate. I thought that was important because they made it very clear that this was their house and they would not be man-handled like they were in Games 1 and 2. They came very close several times in the opening frame, especially early on, but Michal Neuvirth made all the necessary saves, as did Henrik Lundqvist, and like every other game in the series, the two teams would enter the first intermission scoreless.
After several frustrating failed powerplay attempts, the Blueshirts finally got on the board with the man advantage at 5:30 of the second period when Erik Christensen's sharp angle shot got past Neuvirth. Prior to that the Rangers were not shooting enough, but Erik proved it would not take a perfect shot to beat this kid. The Caps would come back to tie it, though, with exactly a minute left in the period, as Alex Ovechkin found the back of the net for the second time in the series.
At the buzzer, the Rangers appeared to have answered. Ruslan Fedotenko's shot from behind the net ticked off a skate and over the goal line, but upon review it was determined that time had run out, therefore the goal was no good. Now I understand that the NBC clock still had 0.1 seconds left when the puck went in, but apparently the official arena clock read 0.0. Believe me, the NHL wouldn't just rip the Rangers off like that as so many claimed.
From where I was sitting the green light looked to have come on before the Rangers raised their sticks. It wasn't a goal.
But the Rangers would end up getting that second goal, anyway, eight minutes into the third period. Vinny Prospal buried a Marc Staal rebound to put the Rangers up 2-1. Once again, Washington battled back to tie the game on the powerplay. This time it was Mike Knuble finding a loose puck at the side of the net at 14:48.
I was very proud of the fans in attendance because following that goal they got really loud, showing their support. It paid off because Brandon Dubinsky's strong move to the net gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead with 1:39 left in regulation. The Rangers would close it out to cut the Caps' series lead to 2-1.
Henrik Lundqvist received the first star of the game and did he ever deserve it. The King was fabulous for the third straight game, making a total of 23 saves and once again holding the offensively potent Caps to only two goals. Thankfully he finally got some goal support to relieve him of some pressure, but still, he had to be very good and he was.
The veterans came through this afternoon. Ruslan Fedotenko was incredible on the defensive side of the puck, Vinny Prospal had a clutch goal in the third period and Chris Drury won some key face-offs. I always find that it's the elder statesmen that come through in the postseason, and that was true this afternoon for New York.
Brandon Dubinsky was the most impressive to me, though. I called him out this morning on my blog for having to bring more to the table in the playoffs, and boy did he deliver in this game. Not only did he pick up an assist as well as the game-winner, but he also led the charge physically. I guess it was all in the fake mustache he was sporting.
Sean Avery, Brandon Prust and Brian Boyle have become a line that's hard not to love. They were hitting everything and were constantly getting in the face of Neuvirth. It's about time that kid experienced some disturbances.
I thought the team as a whole was great defensively, but Dan Girardi was by far the most outstanding. He is the best shot blocking defensemen in the league. There's no doubt about it.
It's going to be a grind, but if the Rangers can play like this in Game 4 on Wednesday, this will be a whole new series. Today was a good start.

NBC sucks b/c......
NBC was horrible when it came to the replay on the no goal at the end of the second. Was I the only one annoyed when they showed that one angle over and over? MSG would’ve had the in-net cam showing it, but NBC felt we needed to see the refs on the phone and the coaches looking at the scoreboard probably watching the in-net camera.

I was at the game today and yes it was gratifying to see the support through out the game from the fans. These are the types of games we would have lost in the last few years but as we have seen all year this team has a game plan and will stick with it. I feel like we will get better in the future if the organization sticks with the youth it has started to develop. But if we do not get our act together on the power play we are never going anywhere. Even though we scored a pp goal today our pp is disorganized, sloppy and we simply do not have a plan.
That being said I can’t wait till wednesday when I know the garden faithful will be even crazier that they were today. And the players on this years team deserve it!!!
Important win tonight. We are going to mess with the game #2 stats. We will win. Wednesday at MSG will be rocking. We show we can score. We can play defense. We are going to tie the series Wed. SIIWSISBD.
Idk, I keep seeing Fedetenko and thinking Jan Erixon.

Holy crap! I remember him from back in the late 80’s! Thats when I became a Rangers fan, the 1986 playoffs. That team seems very similar to this team. Ther were gritty and hard working under-dogs. If I do recall they had to beat the Caps on the way to the Conference Finals… LETS GO RANGERS!

"The NHL wants the Caps to move on no matter what"
Stupid comment.. Which would be better for the NHL and for their business, Caps win this series in 4/5 games or the Rangers winning in 6/7?? Definitely a 6 or 7 game series no matter who wins.. Not to mention the NHL isn’t like the NBA, they don’t fix games like that.. Would they rather the Caps move on? Probably but would they jeopardize the sport like that?? No chance.. Remember the Ducks/Senators and Canes/Oilers Stanley Cup Finals the 1st 2 years after the lockout?? What about the Habs knocking out both the Pens and Caps later season?? End Of Story…

they certainly turn a blind eye on ovechkin. the fact that they called gabby for cross checking right after ovechkin crosschecked twice in plain view in front of the goal. the replay showed the ref looking right at it, and then he turned his head. shouldn’t be that way. last game the rangers were called twice for scrum penalties, which is rare in any game. the caps today committed the same scrum infractions, and nothing. makes one wonder.
Shoot the puck Barry!!!
they also called that hooking call on ovechkin that while it was a penalty, it could have easily gone non-called
by nyrangerfan521 on Apr 17, 2011 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions
The reason the NHL would rather have the caps is bc for the casual fan its crosby/ovechkin nothing else and to the NHL that’s ching ching….I wouldn’t be surprised if they realigned conferences so they could play each other in the cup finals lol (just kidding on that one like I need to say it)

Well, that’s for national broadcasts, where they’re trying to get teams from all over to tune in on tv. I think just the size of the NYC market makes the Rangers a big draw. That’s why you see us as “the other team” in alot of those nationally televised games.

man Sauer is a rock no?
great that dubinsky scored, but man he needs to shoot more. those PP’s where he had clear lanes to the goal and kept passing were freaking me out. the EC goal and BD goals are proof positive that they need to shoot, shoot, shoot on goal. too many passes.
Shoot the puck Barry!!!
i’ll say this for Gaborik. although he’s not scoring, he’s made some great plays defensively. i’ve never seen him backcheck like this before. ever since the game a few weeks ago where he floated back and cost the team a goal in a 2-1 loss, he’s been much better. gotta credit torts for undressing him after that bad effort.
Shoot the puck Barry!!!
Quick note on the PP
THEY HAD BOYLE IN FRONT OF THE NET FINALLY. I’d been calling for this the entire season, since he’s like, you know, 6’7. It produced pretty good results last night and forced Neuvirth to make some pretty good saves on point blank opportunities

I know he gets a lot of grief on this site, and probably rightfully so, but that Christensen goal was unreal, and probably no one else on the club could even come close to making that.
Gaborik, while still ineffective as far as scoring, did contribute to the Prospal goal, by camping out in front of the net. Only bad news is now that Dubi had a good game, he has to keep that horrible porn stache.

Boyle-Prust-Avery was an unbelievable line. They were flying from the beginning.
It would have been nice for them to credit Feds with an assist on the third goal because he worked his tail off on the boards to dig the puck out.
I thought the defense looked very good and they carried themselves very well on the offensive side, especially McCabe, McDonagh, and Staal.
This series is far from over.

(2) great atmosphere in MSG today. It was very interesting…after the Knuble goal the MSG people didnt play anything over the PA system for about a minute. Just silence…you don’t hear (or not hear) that in sports arenas these days. It let the fans just naturally build up the noise.

The 2011 Rangers playoffs...
Turning our boys into Vets.
Linda Cohn made some great points when 1050 interviewed her pre-game. Also, they asked her if she’d wear her good luck, Henke 85th Anniversary Jersey on the Sportcenter set and she’d said she’d try.
Her best point was that this is all gravy, this is building experience for the boys. Gotta think that learning how working this hard earns you a win.
Know what else builds experience? Continuing into the playoffs. It can be done.
the cool thing about this team is that every game they win, they win for the same reason…hard work and heart. they have me believing we can take this series even though Washington clearly has the stronger team on paper.
this team is one of those clubs you want your children to watch because you know they will learn valuable lessons about life. anything’s possible with this kind of an ethic. and yes, when you approach life like this, winning is gravy.
really a great win i was so happy

He’s been largely invisible this series but I don’t recall seeing him at all yesterday…
looking back on the game I realize one thing that wasn't brought up
Henrik did not steal this game. Everyone said that Henrik would steal a game for us, well we won a game where he did not have as big an impact as the team around him. I’m sure George can blow this theory, but when the caps had all that pressure in the rangers end the defense forced the caps to the boards and clogged all the lanes. Both goals the caps scored came on just right circumstances. I’m not downplaying his impact in the game, but the rangers put the game on their shoulders and gave our all world goalie an easier game.

I was thinking the same thing
I actually think the Rangers can play better than they did Sunday. Compared to their wins against Vancouver, Boston and Philly (and the other Caps reg season games), they were a bit more chippy this game, but they had their share of defensive breakdowns that plays like “the flying fedetenko” were required to bail them out. I’m looking forward to the confidence this game brought, and a more complete game on Wed.

Just DVR’ed the replay of Sunday’s game on NHL Network. Dubi’s shot went off the shoulder of Alzner and past Neuvirth. Great job by Dubinsky to get that shot off and the good bounce going in.
