Rangers Recap: Rangers Make Unreal Comeback to Defeat Bruins, 5-3

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 04: Brandon Dubinsky #17 of the New York Rangers ties the score at 3-3 at 16:12 of the third period against the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden on April 4, 2011 in New York City. The New York Rangers defeated the Boston Bruins 5-3. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

I don't think there is any doubting that tonight's magical 5-3 comeback win over the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden was the greatest of the season and probably even ranks up there in best wins since the lockout. To me, this game was the Rangers' season encapsulated into sixty minutes. There were ups, there were downs, but in the end heart and effort prevailed in securing the Blueshirts their 90th and 91st points to take over seventh place in the Eastern Conference. Every single one of you should be proud to be a fan right now, because this win is something I guarantee you will never forget for as long as you live.

The Rangers got off to a rocky start with Daniel Paille and Nathan Horton scoring back-to-back goals to give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead. They were also outshot by Boston, 19-5, through the first twenty minutes of play, which put them in a big hole that many were doubtful they would be able to climb out of.

That hole got deeper when Chris Kelly beat Henrik Lundqvist short side with a low wrister midway through the second period. Vinny Prospal came to the rescue with two tremendous answering goals before the second stanza came to an end, and from that point on the Rangers buckled down and put on their rally caps.

Star-divide

At 16:12 of the third period, Brandon Dubinsky took a Ryan Callahan pass, outwaited Tim Thomas and buried the tying goal. Just a minute later Michael Sauer's third of the season, which just barely trickled over the goal line, gave the Rangers a 4-3 lead. Then, to seal the deal, Derek Stepan buried the empty-netter from center ice.

After that goal a sequence of events took place that were very special to see. First, Stepan leaped into the open arms of his teammates after the puck went in, sort of how Team USA did in last year's World Junior Championship (Stepan was also on that team). Henrik Lundqvist, for the first time ever in regulation, skated out of his crease screaming, slapped Stepan on the back at the bench and gave another yell and fist pump. And when the final buzzer rang to signify the end of the game, Brandon Dubinsky looked up at the crowd and flapped his arms up and down as if to say "stand up New York".

And that's really what the Rangers did this evening at a sold out Madison Square Garden. They rose an entire city in amazing fashion. Seeing Dubi do that sent chills through my spine and reminded me how magical this hockey club is.

To wrap this up, just a few bullet points to touch on:

- Tortorella found a new productive line in Prospal-Stepan-Wolski. It was something he threw together towards the end of the second period and they ended up producing three of the five unanswered goals tonight.

- Duballahan, for the millionth time, helped lead the comeback in the third period. They were out on the ice every other shift and made the most of those minutes. Great to see the two of them leap on each other after creating the tying goal.

- Michael Sauer had a career game this evening. He was sound defensively and then ended up recording both a goal and an assist. Michael was named the game's second star of the game and rightly so.

- Lastly, how could I not mention Mr. Prospal? His intensity carried the club tonight with those consecutive goals. He hasn't scored much since his return, but when he has, they've been pretty important tallies. Prospal was the game's first star.

The Rangers' next game will be on Thursday when they host the Thrashers at MSG. After the past two wins, I almost wish that game was tomorrow.

I could not believe my phone!!!

The only problem with living on the west coast is having to avoid ESPN for the last few hours of work before I cam get home and hit play on my DVR. Today I could not resist. I was disheartened to look at the first intermission to see the 19-5 shot discrepancy. I was even more disheartened when it became 3-0. But I still hoped for the best. I screamed at my desk when it became 3-2, and sang some praise for the Tan Man. Then came the fear and worry. But to my elation Dubi and Cally made me love them even more. I have just gotten home, poured some scotch and hit play. I will try not to scream again… But I know that I will.

'87?

the first round ko by the flyers?

would rather forget that one

interestingly, it did supposedly help the ’93 habs:

The song had played a major role in 1993 for a NHL team, the Montreal Canadiens. During their 24th conquest of the Stanley Cup. While he was driving home after a lost game, head coach Jacques Demers heard the song playing on the radio and realised it was an empowering song. The next day, he brought to the Montreal Forum a cassette tape with the song on it and distribute among players a small card saying “We’re on a mission, nothing’s gonna stop us”. They soon started to win. He had played the song throughout all the playoff games and succeed to won the Stanley Cup that year.

I was thinking the exact same thing as Nick: this game encapsulated this team’s season in a single game. Despite the obstacles thrown at them they found a way to win when they needed it most. When we were down 3-0, I was just depressed. I (and we all as fans) needed something to show us the Rangers truly have what it takes to come back and win this huge game. Right on cue Prospal scored. I took that goal as a message from the Rangers: don’t count us out, we’re not mailing this one in. And they didn’t. And who else to score the tying goal: Dubinsky from Callahan. I was still kinda busy running throughout my house and yelling when the game continued. I glanced at the TV just in time to see the Blueshirts celebrating yet another one, and off I went running around screaming my head off again.
What. A. Win. This is the type of win that can spark a playoff run. Most importantly, it gives the Rangers the belief that they truly can beat anyone in any game (because they CAN).

Lastly, it’s just so great to see the rest of the team pick up Hank for once. Hank gives his heart and soul to this team, and despite that we were down 3-0 tonight. Prospal’s first goal was like the team saying “We got you Hank,” and they echoed that sentiment throughout the rest of the game, rallying for a great great comeback.
I love this team, and I am and always have been truly proud to be a Ranger fan. Unforgettable.

Sorry to go on and on but DAMN I’M JUST SO HAPPY!

The rare game I get to watch on TV, and I get to see this gem, at 3-0 I was starting to think ‘there goes the game, there goes the season.’ I envisioned some some terrible 6-0, 7-0 blowout.
I should have known better, watching this team this year, down by 1 into the 3rd right where they are comfortable being and thank god they didn’t ‘just run out of time.’

IDK, but...

Even though the Rangers were outshot 19-5 and outscored, I dont think they looked that bad. Even when they were down 3-0, they panned the Ranger bench, and they did not look defeated, just disappointed. Start of the third they panned the bench again, and you can see the sparkle in the eyes. They believed. Perfect Storm, but the ship NEVER sinks.

  Love it.

Team looked tired in the 1st period. Mental mistakes, not taking the body…just flat. Dunno what happened after.

All this teams needs is to find that motivation on a nightly basis. They had it yesterday, they found it today after being in a hole. There’s 2 things that awakens the sleeping beast that is this team. 1 is the top teams in the league. The other is pissing them off. Yeah, we play flat, shit-hockey against the Islanders, Florida, and Ottawa. But they can be scary when the switch is turned on. And if Gaborik starts burying some pucks? Look out.

None of the other bottom 5 pose as much of a threat right now if you take injuries into account. Buffalo is all Miller, who’s been banged up. Mtl is missing a few good D (and Carey Price can still go shit in his helmet), still some good scoring depth up front. Tampa is a defensive/goaltending joke, avoid the penalty box and you win. Pens have Fleury and a good D, and 1 quality forward. Pffft.

I’d be pissing my pants if I was one of the division leaders with a chance at drawing the Rangers in the 1st round.

Talk about a walk through the valley of death

I’m not a cliff guy but midway through this game I thought they were absolutely done – I’ll admit it.
Then when they scored the two goals I thought it would be one of those torture-fest 3-2 losses with a scramble at the goal mouth in the final seconds. Then when they tied it I worried about a loss in OT. Didn’t have to worry long – Cally to Dubi followed by Sauer – three of my favorite players.

No one wants to play us in the playoffs because we have something very special – tremendous heart, courage and the will to win.

(Btw I called this in the game thread of the Islander game – lose big in Nassau and then sweep Philly and Boston. This team does everything ass backwards. Gotta love ’em.)

Wolski

At this point it seems just Wolski has just as big a chance of getting hot as Gaborik. He’s a very streaky player, and he did major damage last year in that 7-game loss to the Red Wings.

Great game

But I don’t know about the “this win is something I guarantee you will never forget for as long as you live”. I can barely remember the shootout win against the Flyers from Sunday for God’s Sake. But hopefully me memory holds on to this gem and I can add it to my list of unforgettable moments that I actually remember

1994 – “Mark Messier, come get the Stanley Cup”
1997 – Wayne Gretzky’s Hat trick against the Panthers during the 1997 playoffs
1999 – Gretzky’s Final Game (I’ll admit that I cried)

2002 – Pavel Bure joins Rangers and scores 20 points in 12 games (He was magic)
2002- Pavel Bure collides with Curtis Brown of the Sabres, the injury to his knee prematurely ends his career
2003 – Alexei Kovalev returns to the Rangers and scores empty net goal in first game back
2003 – Mark Messier passes Gordie Howe for second all time in points, embraces Kovalev
2004 – Mark Messier’s final game (I’ll admit that I cried)
2005 – Marik Malik scores shootout goal against Washington (I’ll admit that I cried)
2006 – Brian Leetch returns as a Bruin, receives standing ovation
2007 – Sean Avery is beaten bloody by Kovalchuk in game 3 on the opening round of the playoffs
2007 – Chris Drury ends Rangers playoff hopes scoring with 7.7 seconds left (I’ll admit that I cried)

Maybe I can add this game to the list at some point

But, in my mind even better than Dubi, was seeing Lundqvist skate all the way out of his net to the bench to celebrate with HIS team. And yes, it is HIS team. …and fire up the DVR. My coworkers and friends are great about not saying anything and even though its 3 am eastern time, I just finished watching this game. Un-fu**ing-believable.

I am so proud of these guys right now. The heart, the clutch play . . . . this win is going to kill the Bruins confidence.

Someone above said we should give Prospal a contract next year. Ya know, he’s got 22 points in like 27 games or thereabouts; the bronze fonz…the tan man….I love him. I love the look on his face when he scores. He’s got a year or two left in his tank, and he’ll teach the Kreiders and Stepans. His work ethic is outstanding…Gaborik should be ashamed.

ANd Last-Becomes First guy; I have to say that Kovalev’s return to the Rangers in 2003 doesn’t hold the stub of a candle to this one. THIS game was one for the ages. Thirty years from now an ancient Al Trautwig will be pulling Rangers vs Bruins 4/4/2011 out of a vault somewhere and playing it again and again.

Stellar.

Let's not forget about Staal here

He started off the game pretty terrible, but plodded through and ended up a +4 on the night. He an Girardi were everywhere and everything last night.

don’t know if anyone touched up on this in the game thread or here, but major major props to whichever rangers gave up their body and possibly their lives diving in front of Chara’s slapshots from the point. (callahan, giardi, i forgot who else). you got to have the biggest set of grapefruits in the world to step in front of the world’s hardest shot, and you can tell they felt the sting more than any other shot they blocked.

What a hockey game we have at MSG

Little roller from along the boards, it gets by Thomas and the Rangers win it!

Nice …Lundqvist skating over to the bench looked like KNIGHT rounding third and heading home.

by robbo0315 on Apr 5, 2011 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Lundqvist in full equipment (including skates) could still probably win a race from 2nd to home ahead of Knight.

I managed to wake up my kids and piss off my wife from yelling so loudly during the game.

Awesome win…unbelievable. Bring on the playoff beards!

I would take the loss rather then lose Callahan for the remainder of the season! Chara’s slap shot broke his leg….

Love this team

Not sure how far they can go, but this one of the enjoyable teams to watch in NY. They remind me of the ’96 Yankees and 2007 Giants. Heart, hustle, teamwork and they really care about each other. Torts loves this team and you can see it…he is like a proud parent watching his kids mature and develop into men.

Certainly not the best Ranger team, but possibly the most likable and gritty.

Think I popped a blood vessel screaming when Dubi scored. I’m sure I popped one when Sauer scored. Unbelievable heart and grit this team has.
Loved seeing Step get mobbed at the bench and Hank come skating over to get in the action. Dubi fires up the crowd as the buzzer sounds. Just chills down my spine from the whole scene. Can’t re-watch the highlights enough.

Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
