Rangers Are in the Playoffs!

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 09: The New York Rangers celebrate their 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden on April 9, 2011 in New York City. (Photo by Jonathan Klein/Getty Images)

After a disaster of a night on Friday, it seemed highly unlikely that things would go the way the New York Rangers needed them to in order for them to make the playoffs today. But the team, once again displaying their resiliency, defeated the New Jersey Devils earlier this afternoon in a spirited contest, and then received help from the Tampa Bay Lightning this evening, who defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 6-2. It once again came down to the final day of the regular season, but thankfully things went differently this year than they did the last, and the magical season lives on.

The Rangers will finish the season in eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 44-33-5 and 93 points (only two better than the ninth place Hurricanes). I've been watching this team play hockey for about sixteen years now, and I must say, this season has made me the proudest to call myself a New York Rangers fan, regardless of how tonight ended up. They made up for their lack of skill through hard work and heart, and they carried that on through from game one to game 82. They established an identity and became one of the more respected clubs in the National Hockey League because of that. For this, they deserved to be in the playoffs after missing out last year, and now that they are in, who knows what could happen.

Since the Blueshirts finished in eighth, their opponent in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals will be the first place Washington Capitals - a rematch from two years ago. The Rangers went 3-1-0 against the Caps during the regular season, and over the course of those four games they outscored Washington by a whopping 18-6. It's going to take an upset to out Alex Ovechkin and the Caps in round one, but based on those numbers, I have full faith that the Rangers can pull it off.

But for now, we shall celebrate, because it took a near miracle for the Rangers to make the playoffs today and they did.

We're going to the postseason, baby!

Wow…What enjoyable day of hockey. This team has went through a lot this season and has worked very hard to deserve this. The new season starts now and there is not a single team in the Eastern Conference that wants to take this team on. LETS GO RANGERS!

A hearty congrats

and glad to see the Lightning played the way they did in a meaningless game for them.

Now return the favor, and beat the Caps, please. Besides, there’s the Rangers own bit of redemption to seek on the Caps…

Best of luck. Nice to see one of the rare instances where help that was needed was subsequently received.

To the fans that disrespected Drury

He played with a knee injury most of the season so he could help keep the team afloat when most of the starters were out with injuries.

Drury may have a big contract, but he has always played as hard as he can, and has been the key mentor to Callahan. He also played a key role in the silver medal we won in the last olympics.

Lament his injuries, curse his luck, but do not disrespect the Captain, or doubt his effort.

Its one goal

He has scored one important goal this season. He better put a nice little playoff together for him to regain my loyalty. If that was his only trick for the season it was not worth 7mil and bye bye Drury in the off season.

While I agree it was a great goal for Drury and the team

We needed more of this from the Captain at the beginning of the year. I hope he turns this playoff run into something great.

Pride. I like many of you are proud of this team… not just because they reversed their fortunes from last season… not just because theyve battled through these injuries all season long… but because its crystal clear that for once a new york ranger team is collectively taking pride in what their doing. These guys will break bones for the sake of keeping shots away from Hank. And then they’ll come back weeks later prepared to do the same thing over again if necessary. if wolski and christensen can keep up their intensity over the next month and provide a little skill and hard work, the effects of the loss of callahan can be masked a bit. We have the goaltending edge over the Caps and sometimes thats all you need but they do have the best player in the world (F.U. cockpunch crosby) so i hope Staal n Girardi eat their Wheaties. lets go boys! what a day

Okay, I’m dreaming a bit…but 11 shutouts in the playoffs would be awesome. Just glad to see them back there, though; lots of adversity, and yet, we are not done yet! I’m proud of this team and would love to see them duplicate the run the Flyers had last postseason (with the exception of winning the Cup, of course).

Tuned in NHL Center ice at 7 tonite and found that for some goddamned reason the Tampa Bay game, which was on the schedule, was replaced by the Montreal game! What a bummer! Today’s events reminded me of the 1969-70 regular season finale when the Rangers beat Detroit 9-5 and got the last playoff berth when Montreal lost to Chicago 10-2. The Habs needed 5 goals scored to overtake NY and ended-up yielding 5 empty net goals in a fruitless attempt to get them.

The Rangers and their fans deserve this

I’m so proud of this team, and so relieved they didn’t have to stew all summer about the Atlanta game. For every game like that, there were many more inspiring, against-the-odds wins, more than I can even remember right now, so the 8 seed is ours, and rightfully so.

For some reason, a turning point for me was taking back-to-back road games against the Stars and the Blues. At that point, I knew this team would re-write the script and end in a different place than last year.

Rangers in 6.

That turning point for me came when we gave up a lead late in the third to Pitt and then tied it up late with Staal and won it in OT with Duballahan.

Really? I wish I could share your and other people’s optimism right now. I can see the Rangers winning the series in 5 instead. They are the Caps’ worst nightmare in the first round just like Montreal was last year. They are a team built for playoff hockey, very physical, block a lot of shots, have a great goaltender, are well coached, Staal and Girardi usually do a great job againts Ovi and they’ve shown that they can score in bunches against us this year. I think the Caps are definitely the underdogs this time. Thrashers and Rangers are the two teams I did not want the Caps facing in the first round of the playoffs and here we are. I just hope that the new guys can make a difference. Secondary scoring and special teams will be the key in this series.

I just hope the players are as over-confident as their fans. The #1 seed amounts to a big monkey on a team’s back in terms of expectations.
I get the feeling their fans look to the 2009 series as some kind of comfort, but our roster is totally different now, and the guys that are still here that played in that series are all much improved.

by Joe1969 on Apr 10, 2011 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions

No, not sure its the 2009 series. Caps lost the guy who scored the series-winner, after all, plus some others. I think it’s more having had the best defensive season in franchise history, allowing exactly 2 goals against per game since late December, getting better movement on the PP recently, having Ovechkin and Backstrom “wake up,” and probably getting Green and Poti back.

2 GAA per game since December except the last couple times we played you, where we scored a total of 13. Pretty sure Ovechkin hasn’t scored on us this year as well.
I don’t expect those stats to be replicated in the next couple of weeks, but it certainly points to a close, competitive series.

by Joe1969 on Apr 10, 2011 3:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Including one of those games (the 2GAA starts with a loss to Boston, I think…the 7-0 was before that).

2 games are nothing, we both know that. I’m really not trying to be unfair to NYR or trash talk, but given that +26 of NYR’s +35 goal differential comes from three games and shootouts, that +35 is deceiving. I just don’t know to what extent, though.

Rangers were 16-8 in games decided by 3+, Washington 14-8, both near the top in the league. In the ‘true’ 2+ goal games (excluding ENs), the Rangers were 17-12, 4th in the conference. Washington 18-13, percentage points behind.

The teams are pretty even down the line, remarkably so for a 1-8 matchup.

I’m not going to pretend this is a cakewalk by any means, but this can’t be a comforting matchup for Caps’ fans.

And incidentally

I’ll never understand the “well take out their best games, and they’re not as good” argument. That’s true for everyone, by simple logic. The games happened, they’re part of our record

I’d love to say “well take out the two early season losses to Philly and the loss to Anaheim,” which would make us +44 and better than everyone except VAN and BOS.

You can site that we’re not a fantastic puck possession team, or that we ride the percentages of our goalie too much sometimes, but the goals we scored and the goals we allowed are what they are.

I’m sure you get the logic behind shootouts, so I won’t explain that.

The other: outliers. Seems like I’m taking a “trimmed mean” of sorts by excluding the best and worst games. I don’t know, for me, seems like outliers are games decided by 5 or more goals, plus some decided by 3 and 4 (depending on how the scoring happened).

Obviously, that also means looking at the opposite end of the spectrum, terrible losses…don’t see many for NYR. Take away the best 3 and worst three performances, and we get +15 or so. Go with 4, and it goes to +12 or so.

I’m not discounting the blowouts entirely, but I refuse to believe a team can be the 5th best team in the league when 58% of that goal differential came in 3.7% of the season.

An old Tom Poti coming back really is not something to be comforting. He will be slow he wasn’t really isnt that great of a D man either. He looked good the last few seasons because the Caps really had no D the last couple. Now that the Caps are more D focused I bet Tom Poti starts to look very unimportant.

by Pballer505 on Apr 10, 2011 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, you’re off target, I think. He looked terrible when he was asked to be the top PKer and shutdown guy. When trying to clear on the PK, more pucks went straight to the PP D than off the boards and down the ice.

Now, he just has to handle third pair minutes (think what Eminger gets) plus limited PK time and maybe a bit of PP time, and he’s more than capable of that. With Wideman out, his puck-moving abilities, although limited, will help the Caps clear the defensive zone. He’s not as good as he was before, sure, but he’s not top or even 2nd pair anymore, either.

this is the best matchup imo

I think we are up in their heads, mind f’n them right now because we owned them this season
the way this went down losing then winning a great game then waiting for Tampa to do their thing
its like it was written, it was meant to happen this way
I was so pissed at this team the other night but seriously they could make a f’n run for the cup
the NHL channel tonight was talking about it and someone compared them to the Canadians team from last year
strong goalie physical etc, we can do this if we play at our high level

I just found the NHL channel tonight on my time warner cable, they play games on there they had the Carolina game I was sooo happy I go a chance to see that

by the way, we did we not keep Moore? seriously that guy had totally evolved into a really good player man
hes physical he scores he has decent hands passes well and wins faceoffs
idk where his scoring touch came from and he has a nice wrist shot now

What a day........

…………all i can say is I am so immensely proud of this Ranger team. In a rebuilding year, with very little expectation realistically for this season, they have shown us time and time again that they can skate with and beat the NHL’s best.

Anything is possible now.

Also, I have denigrated Chris Drury so much on here; I humbly eat my words. He really showed up today and that goal he scored was all heart. Good for you Captain. I don’t know what is going to happen this summer with his contract, but as of right now he is our captain, and he fuckin played like it tonight. Shit, maybe it really was his injuries and he’s got a lot more game left. Can you imagine he comes into the playoffs and actually provides some scoring? He’d be another relentless force on the ice for what has truly been a relentless, never-say-die team.

Bleeding Ranger blue has rarely felt this good.

Considering

I still rate him as one of the bottom 5 GMs in the league, absolutely. His only saving graces lately are the fact he found a GM dumber then he was (Thank you Mr. Gainey) and got rid of Gomez for a couple of gems, a problem he created to begin with. He was at least smart enough to realize he didn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground when it came to hockey talent (a scary thing for a guy running a hockey team) and hired a Pro scout who could run the draft for us. And he hired a coach with an actual plan for development with the balls to see it through. Hell, even a deaf, dumb, and blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. Let’s not forget that all the playoff victories combined under this GM to date wouldn’t bring us a Stanly Cup, that’s 10 years and counting. If this is what we have with Glen Sather running this ship, imagine what we would/could have if we had at least a top 15 GM.

Wolski has a giant X on his back. As I said in the GDT, it’s really noticeable when he decides to give a shit. If he plays well, he gives a legitimate threat outside of Dubinsky and Gaborik’s lines, which is what it will take to get anywhere this postseason.

Anisimov needs to get going though, that’s also certainly true. He’s been streaky as well, with only 2 points in his last 8, but 11 in 10 before that. He’s another guy that when in ‘beast’ mode, can really push the offense.

The last X-factor is the 6th defenseman. Be it Eminger or Gilroy, they have to be better at what they’re not good at. Eminger needs to help keep the offensive pressure when he can, Gilroy has to be better defensively. It might not be as big a factor with Washington, but deeper teams like PHI or BOS will require the 3rd pair to play big.

so glad we made it, got hammered last night and randomly met a bunch of ranger fans at a party, and there was much rejoicing

I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

Quote,"After a disaster of a night on Friday, it seemed highly unlikely that things would go the way the New York Rangers needed them to in order for them to make the playoffs today. But the team, once again displaying their resiliency, defeated the New Jersey Devils earlier this afternoon in a spirited contest, and then received help from the Tampa Bay Lightning this evening, who defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 6-2. Ranger's realistic thoughts

As a Rangers fan, I hate backing into the playoffs, but we don’t have a choice at this time. I’m not confident the Rangers will beat the Caps because of their lack of scoring. Casual fans will say, wait, we killed them in a few games this year, but good Ranger’s fans know those 6-0 and 7-0 scores were fluky, and that the Caps are a much better defensive team now, with the playoffs being a whole other animal.
Until the Rangers draft/develop some big time scorers who produce at the NHL level, I am tired of people saying the future looks bright. When is the last time the Rangers had an impact goal scorer in the NHL that they drafted?
Gaborik is the only offensive player who scares other teams, and this year he’s been miserable.
Please don’t sign Richards in the off season. He’s going to cost too much and he’s 30 already. I don’t care that he played for Torts already, these are the types of signings that set a franchise back for years. Just look back to Drury and and Gomez. It doesn’t matter that Drury is the captain and back now. Sure, he had a huge goal yesterday, but he has 1 lousy goal this year, and his best play is on the penalty kill and face-offs. For 7 million a year, that’s a joke. We need at least a consistent 30 goal scorer. If we wanted more defense and penalty killing, we could of resigned Malhotra for a lot less.
I’m not trying to be pessimistic, but a realist. Until this organization learns how to draft, we are not going anywhere. Lundquist can only take us so far as we’ve seen in past years.

i think we have drafted very well, especially with our draft positioning..

staal, sauer, dubinsky, callahan, anisimov, stepan, lundqvist, mdz, kreider, thomas are all draft picks.

ill agree that we don’t have as much offensive skill as other teams, but its not because we don’t know how to draft.

its because we use 7 mil on gomez and drury and redden rather than legit stars and because we haven’t either

a) tanked
b) gotten lucky

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

That is a

good point. The last time we drafted a guy who turned into a consistent 30-40 goal guy was quite a while ago. Kovalev got 30 three or four times but never with us. Grantato got 30 once. So did Sandstrom and Nemchinov, but they weren’t snipers. In 1974 we drafted Rick Middleton, who tuned into a very consistent 30-40 goal, 90-100 point guy. That is after we traded him to Boston for a washed up Ken Hodge. And although hard work and grit, which this Ranger team showed, are qualities which every team must have, the big difference maker is ALWAYS the sniper. The Islanders were a good team before Bossy, and with him they became great because the good sniper just needs one or two chances and he’ll bury one. No team has ever won without a go-to guy. Hard work without talent, in the end, doesn’t work.

sadly, this is true

I still look at the ’03 draft from time to time and cry myself to sleep..

we could have picked Brown, Bernier, Parise, Getzlaf, Kesler, Richards, PERRY, Eriksson, Backes.. but we went with Hugh Jessiman
