Rangers vs Flyers - Winter Classic Speculation

Wc_medium

Photo via localhostr.com

[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 05/12/11 6:44 PM EDT BTW strikes again!]

Darren Dreger reported today on the "Dreger Report" that the Flyers could potentially face the Rangers in next years Winter Classic. Stating that the game will almost certainly be played in Philly, with the venue still being uncertain as of yet.

Amid months of speculation, sources confirm Philadelphia is the leading candidate for next year’s Winter Classic.

The NHL hasn’t officially signed off on the location, largely because of building availability in Philadelphia. The NHL would love to host the outdoor game at Lincoln Financial Field, but the NFL’s schedule is making the football stadium virtually impossible, so Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies, will likely be the venue of choice.

The Flyers will likely face the New York Rangers, but the Rangers are waiting for confirmation of their involvement.

The idea of watching John Tortorella co-exist with cameras invading the sanctity of his dressing room and private quarters will almost guarantee huge ratings for HBO’s 24/7 leading up to the Winter Classic.

This would be HUGE, and an experience of a lifetime if the Rangers get to be a part of the Winter Classic. Now the question is, will the Rangers take up on this opportunity. I sure as hell hope so! I know for a fact that I would be all over those tickets as they went on sale. What is everyone's feedback on this?

I’d love to see this! Imagine the Rangers on 24/7, too? I’m sure both teams would be interesting to see on the show, and definitely interesting to see in the game. I’m sure fans from across the NHL will whine about it being another northeast matchup, and maybe rightfully so, but it’s not a surprising choice if it is the choice.

My only question is if the NFL doesn’t have a season can the NHL use a football stadium?

Probably

I’m sure the Giants wouldn’t mind renting out their stadium for a wee commission fee.

24/7 with the Rangers would be EPIC

We would get to know the players so much more and get a glimpse into the inner workings of Torts’ diabolical plans. I’m sure they’ll get Sather on there too lol. Also important to remember that the series will cover so much more than the actual game itself. Games in the weeks leading up to it will also be covered, as well as our team’s reaction to them.

We can only hope friends.

PS if it actually does happen, anyone wanna start up a pool on an over/under of Torts cursing out the camera crew?

I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

We’d have a pretty good advantage in the winter classic: MSG ice is so shitty that they might as well be playing outdoors

It disgusts me that its philly. They just played last year, give someone else a shot. Id like to see us at Detroit since NBC is anti-canada. I am 100% anti-philly so I really hope we don’t have to endure all the coverage of that team again, which would be even worse with 24/7

I’m a bit annoyed from a hockey perspective that they’ve got us back in the Winter Classic again just because the NHL really should try involving other markets rather than recycling Pittsburgh and the Flyers every other season.

But, I like the fact that there’s real hatred this time ;-)

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

by PursuitOfLappyness on May 12, 2011 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

yea I didn’t get the Flyer-Bruin “rivalry” before last years playoffs either.

& Yes I really hate Philly. When i’d root for a Boston team to win against another team I really hate that team & city. Philly tops the list for me.

I’d say that if the Flyers and Bruins were to meet in a Winter Classic next season then it would have some merit to it, given the last two playoffs. But back then there wasn’t really much dislike.

In stark contrast, I hate the Rangers. Hate the Yankees. Hate the Giants. But I don’t really care about NBA.

I like that the Rangers are a part of it but I hate that’s it’s in Philly. Even though I’ll go to the game anyway but the Flyers were already a part of a WC (Yes they were the away team) but I think it should be in NYC instead. But it is what it is and I’ll go anyway and I’ll still enjoy it. I was hoping it would be Devils/Rangers or Habs/Rangers in NYC.

Another issue is the fact that the game is supposedly going to be on January 2nd. What? Why? Just leave it the way it is.

But none of this is 100% confirmed by the NHL so you never know. We’ll see how everything works out in the end..

I get that but they’ve gone head-to-head with major college bowls (Which draw in more viewers then regular-season NFL games)..

And they could put the game on at night like they did this year. Only going up against 1 NFL game..

also, whats wrong with new years eve? I mean imagine getting wasted watching the Rangers kick some Flyer ass and then watching the ball drop… that would be quite the epic night indeed

If they’re not doing it on January 1st (for whatever reason), I agree they should put it on December 31st. It’s a Saturday and they could put the game on @ 7 or 8. Would be perfect. Game starts @ 8, ends between 10:30-11 and then people watch all the New Years Eve shit. Putting it on Monday January 2nd makes no sense.

All for it, especially if its in Philly – cause then its not a Rangers “home” game that I have to pay for. I’m already losing one game cause of the regular season openers, and I dont want to waste a home game in the freezing s freezing cold not being able to see anything cause you’re a mile away.

But being on 24/7 would be great stuff.

You have season tickets? You wouldn’t have to pay for the WC. Some teams give the Season tix holders first choice at tickets but most of the time they do a “raffle” for tickets. Since the demand is so high. But if you don’t want tickets, you wouldn’t have to pay for them if you’re a season ticket holder. It’s kinda like how the Playoffs work. You get 1st choice @ tickets but you don’t have to buy them if you don’t want (or can’t)

twitter.com/NYRangers365

by NYRangerFan718 on May 13, 2011 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Not really my point – I pay $XXXX for my seasons. That amount isnt changing now that they are playing only 40 “home” games, and it woudlnt change if they played 39 home games if, for example, the WC was at Yankmee Stadium. Every time they add a “home” game I dont get tickets for, my per-game cost goes up. So Id be in the raffle, and If I did get tickets, Id be looking to sell them for a tidy profit.
