Boogaard's contract, and other callous crap we should NOT be discussing...

In Boogaard's defense, of course none of us would have done differently but to sign on the dotted line if offered a bloated Sather-contract.  The problem with Derek's contract, and his usefulness to the New York Rangers, was a matter of timing and nothing more.  I've said this a lot on here and I'm surprised it isn't crystal clear to everyone.  There was a time in the NHL when a guy like Derek would have been worth every cent, and that time has long passed.  I'm talking about the NHL prior to the Coward Rule, or as they put it, the Instigator Penalty.  In the post-instigator NHL if a player doesn't want to fight, they don't have to fight.  They can run around and elbow people in the head and often escape physical retribution.  It renders a player like Derek Boogaard obsolete in terms of his role as enforcer.  Unable to keep pace with the rest of the skaters and pests, he wasn't even much of a bodycheck threat.   If this was 1987, we'd have been set.  None of this is the fault  of Derek Boogaard, and considering his career had lasted as long as it did, it is clear that Boogie brought more to the table than his fists.  He contributed - more so in Minnesota - and for that he definitely had tons of heart and willingness to do whatever it took to help his team.

As a teammate and a pillar of the community, Derek Boogaard was apparently on the level of an Adam Graves.  For that there are no statistics, no trophies, no measuring stick beyond the esteem he garnered in everyone's eyes.  For that I feel tremendous sadness for his family and friends, but I also feel an emptiness which comes with knowing that he could have made a real impression on us as fans as the next few years progressed.  There are not enough guys like Derek Boogaard in the world; certainly in the world of sports outside of hockey, there are few.

For the people who have asked whether or not his contract comes off the books, you really are two things.  One is plain stupid, because what the f**k else do you think happens?  They spend the money on girlscout cookies and Glen Sather's cigar collection?  The other is......really dude?  really?  That's where your head goes when a 28 year old man dies......What happens to his salary?  This is proof that the internet, youtube, twitter, texting, a million gigs of information every second age we live in has detracted from our humanity.

If you're going to ask a question about Derek Boogaard, first imagine that his sister Krysten and his dad Len are standing next to you.  Maybe imagine his brother Aaron struggling to get one word out about his big brother that he'll never see again; never have a beer with or break balls with EVER AGAIN....imagine those people are standing next to you and then decide whether or not the question on your lips is appropriate.  It'll save us all from the indignity of being associated in any way with jackasses like you, here on the ever classy, Banter forum that I for one am proud to be a part of.  People like you, though, the Banter does not need.

Here's wishing peace to the family and friends of Derek Boogaard, who will need so much of it but get so little in the upcoming days.....

Well done KingHenrik!

I agree, I’m kinda sad that we as fans will not get the chance to connect with Boogie the way Minnesota fans did. You can tell they loved the guy, and I’m sorry we won’t get the chance to get to know a wonderful person, at least so far as you can build a relationship with a player you watch all year.

I think the contract question is a fair one, but the timing has been idiotic. Honestly I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being curious about it, but it definitely shouldn’t be right after the man passes on. Think before you speak people.

Especially on this blog, we are a proud group here, and we aren’t the type of blog you just come in and make moronic, insensitive, offensive comments (about anything, but especially about a man’s death).

You hit the nail on the head sir. I am sure Boogaard would have made a much bigger impact, one that may have rivaled Gravey’s if he had been here longer. Very well said.

I was saying the same thing to myself as I was reading this great write up by King Henrk30. People like Boogard are rare in sports today. They are transcedent for many years after their away from the world because they bring a special self-less nature to their team and to the fans. I first took notice to Boogard in the 2007 playoffs when the Wild were playing the Ducks. I big brawl broke out where a few of the Wild players (whom are not fighters) were jumped by idiots like Brad May. As I was watching and things settled down, I could not believe how loud the chants were for Boogaard to come on the Ice and when he did the volume got louder. Right there I said to myself " This guy is special". When he was signed everyone (most) were complaiing about the contract. I felt at the time, okay maybe but think about the money he used for charity and for the kids that are in need. Also, what he brought to the locker room and after taking notice of the direction the Rangers are forming as a team, Boogaard fit the mold. He has a specific role and that is a unquie one in sports, but he brings a team even more closer than it is. The Rangers are becoming a special team in my eyes, new leadership is coming into fruition, guys like Sauer taking anybody on that gets near the King, Boyle playing a more physical game, etc… It is a very sad time in the world of hockey and for fans of Boogaard of old and the new here for us Rangers fans, we could only picture what could have been with Mr. Boogaard. He seems to be a great human being off the ice as well and is one of those people that make a great immpression in a short period of time. That is a special human being right there. I wish his family all the best and to all the Wild fans. Boogaard will be missed…

RIP DB

I might be the one guy who didn’t mind the Boogard contract. I saw the emergence of Prust as a viable 3rd line guy more important to the team than as his position of sheriff. Boogard being signed to protect the Ranger players was welcomed by me. I liked everything I saw from him, from his rep to his heart. I can’t comment about his play because he only played 22 games here. ……got into a few fights, scored a goal……but he did have a presence out on the ice that other teams had to be wary off. I would have liked to have seen him play a full season here, its a very sad and unfortunate situation.

I do see that the last couple of players who the Rangers signed as enforcers really were here as fighters because they lacked the talent to provide any consistent scoring “punch”.
Colton Orr***, Jody Shelley, Donny Brashear and Boogard are all arguably heavyweights but all of them lacked the skill to be complete players. There are enforcers out there that did contribute in other ways. We had a couple in Joe Kocur, dare I say Tie Domi and a couple of other guys. ***I do wish the Rangers just kept Orr around though, instead of throwing big dollars at Brashear and Boogie.

I think the Rangers now will turn their attention to trying to get a Konopka type of enforcer. A guy to play 4th line minutes without being a liability. Konopka may have excelled on a terrible team that essentially was forced to give him more ice time than he would get anywhere else…..see PA Parenteau. There are a few guys out there that could fill the role. Avery and Prust and even Boyle are more valuable to the team playing minutes than sitting in the box for sending a message.

Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.

I thought Boogy would be worth every nickel

The guy took alot of flack, for what he got paid, but there was no doubt that he was the best at what he does in the league. In his limited time with the Rangers, the ONLY guy who fought him straight up, like a true heavy weight, was Jody Shelley. All the other so called “heavy weights” looked for every advantage they could they charged at him, tried to leverage him to the ground or tackle him. They never just threw, and they were usually the ones the who STARTED the fights with him. Once you dropped the mitts, there was no hiding from him.

I wasn’t shy about sticking up for Boogy, and I wound up spending alot of time trolling you tube for clips to support that he could do more then fight. If you’ve got some time, I suggest doing the same. This guy was a TANK. I could watch him hit people for hours. No headhunting, no elbows, just HUGE body checks. It’s a shame, cause I think he had a place here.

Okay, now I'm pissed!

You know, I have a heart, and a brain. I also have read many people criticize both Glen Sather for originally signing him, and for Boogaard missing as many games as he did.

Obviously, no one could have seen Boogaard passing. Equally, no one could’ve predicted the things that would be said at this time. No one here has said “I’m glad he’s dead”, or “what a waste of time and money”! Believe me, even if I’d have heard this, I would’ve lost it on the a$$wipe who dared this in print.

I (for one) had no issue with signing him, per se, but I honestly thought the contract was too high (nothing for me to lie about here). But, I didn’t know he would lose his life. I posted a fanpost the other day, and was badly ridiculed for the timing of it.

As I recall, I still live in America, and I’m covered by the first Amendment of the Constitution. I can take being judged, but don’t tell me what I can write and can’t write. Completely unethical and unamerican.

I’m not sure what this rant was about – unless your alter ego was “Den”.

As for “living in America” and “the First Amendment” – you absolutely have the right to say or write whatever you want. On YOUR website/blog – on whatever streetcorner or hilltop, with or without a megaphone – on your dime. But since this isn’t any of the above, when you post you agree to the terms of service. There’s a link at the bottom of the page. Might be worthwhile to read it sometime.

On the First Amendment

I recommend everyone think about the article that enables freedom of speech and the press.

It was enacted to prevent the tyrannical actions of the government, saying that no person would be punished for dissent in oral or written form. How the interpretation of the First Amendment has evolved to its use in current society (e.g. being able to say whatever the fuck we want whenever we want; paparazzi harassing celebrities outside their homes or during routine errands) is not what the framers of the Constitution intended.

Say what you want, those guys were not as “forward-thinking” as people claim them to be.

by Hoggo on May 17, 2011 4:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Free speech is just what it says—speech that is free from legal constraints. Being able to say what we want whenever we want is pretty much the definition of such an action. Nice to see that you’ve assumed the ability to read the minds of a collection of 18th-century gentlemen to straighten us all out on the fact that free speech actually is not free……

This thread is supposed to be about Derek Boogaard. Maybe we should stick to it, instead of debating applications of the bill of rights.

thanks for that link

great post by Jess…..if Larry Brooks violated a confidentiality agreement I hope the Rangers can take his press credentials away.

Brooks is a scumbag of the highest order…..and little campaigns of insinuation like his current one involving Boogaard’s death are just wrong. Can’t anybody exercise any respect for the dead anymore?

I am not defending Brooks, who is generally a douche and a bad journalist, but I disagree with Jess’s blog and others linked there with the same argument. It may be in poor taste, but it is newsworthy. That is the risk that anyone in the public eye takes – that their dirty laundry will be leaked and aired out in public. It happens in the new every day – politicians, athletes, celebrities in rehab, seeing a shrink, whatever.

by BigB22 on May 17, 2011 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I am not saying this is not a newsworthy subject; rather I question Brooks’ integrity for bringing up an issue like substance abuse prior to toxicological reports on Boogey. If any sort of confidentiality agreements were broken by revealing this information about Boogaard then Brooks should be made accountable for his actions—that is my point.

Brooks works for a slander factory—the crappiest paper in America today. No surprise his own journalistic ethics are worse than ever other writer and blogger in the NY area.

Prole art threat.

by greifi griffie on May 17, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

The Post is the greatest!! Brooks is a joke though. As far as accountability, some sort of damage has to have been inflicted. If the autopsy ends up showing that the leaked info was relevant then there is really no case at all.

Not to mention that celebrity gossip is rarely successfully prosecuted as libel or slander.

by BigB22 on May 17, 2011 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if you read Jess’ piece that was linked above, but Jess says that voluntary enrollment in the NHLPA Substance Abuse program means that the player’s participation in the program MUST be confidential. If that is the case then Brooks and the person who leaked this info to him have broken rules pertaining to individual privacy, and they should be punished by the Rangers or the NHL.

As such, that is not journalism—it’s unethical gossip-mongering. As far as all the other bullshit spewed out by the Post, enjoy it if you must….I’d like to see that paper go out of business, and I’ve felt that way for as long as I can remember about the Post.

Prole art threat.

by greifi griffie on May 17, 2011 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Well fortunately for you, there are dozens of other rags to buy that may be more in line with your tastes and political views. The Post, however, is not going anywhere and is still a great paper for certain columns.

by BigB22 on May 17, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

As bad as it is

Hockey is a business… Never got to know the guy, and really didn’t get to see him play, but when push comes to shove you move on and it’s back to business… Same thing happened with Cherapanov, the rangers caught all kinds of slack for asking for a compensatory pick… It may be insensitive, while neither agree nor disagree thats how it is… It’s a sad thing to lose somebody at such a young age, but you have to move on…

RIP Boogey..
