Alex Tanguay?
I was watching NHL Network and they were interviewing Jay Feaster, GM of Calgary, and I learned that Alex Tanguay is a UFA. He made 1.7 million this past season and they love his chemistry with Jarome Iginla. He's about the same age as Brad Richards and as far as I know he doesn't have any concussion issues.
Do you guys think he's a better option than spending a shitload on Richards, and could provide similar numbers and chemistry with Gaborik?
We could throw 2 or even 2.5 million at him and it would hurt a lot less than the 5 - 7 million Richards would command.
With the money we save we could definitely lock up our RFA's (and Fedotenko), and maybe snag a Wisniewski for D (the power play CANNOT be as bad as its been again) or a Brooks Laich, the type of player I believe you can't have enough of.
Thoughts?

Brad Richards > Alex Tanguay
Probably obvious, but I felt like saying it.
Because Tang’s has/had chemistry with Iginla means absolutely nothing with respect to potential chemistry with Gaborik.
Since the topic is cheap alternatives, how about Jarko Immonen? Led Finland to the Gold at the WC, with 9 goals, 3 assists. Oh, and the NYR still retain his rights. I’d rather give him $2mm @ 26 years old, than Tanguay.
I was wondering what happened to him, good to know we still have his rights. But he is 29, the other Jarkko Immonen is 26.
Looking at his stats the last few years they’re nothing too special but he did just lead the IIHF Tourney in goals & points. Does he have any interest in playing in North America again?

Maybe Immonen would be worth a shot if he comes over, roblem is with the salary hed want its a rather big gamble.
Tanguay isnt the kind of player id want to see , i somehow like Hanzus, he might be a nice fit. Also why not just take na older guy like Arnott, hes the type of C we need and wouldnt block our C position for too long for our young crop coming up.
yeah I know its not ideal....but I thought maybe its more sensible....
…..unless Brad Richards really is world-class and an elite player I don’t want to have them spend big money for lotsa years on guys about to start breaking down. Haven’t we been down this road before?
We need Christian Ehrhoff or James Wisniewski just as badly as we need a number one center. We have Anisimov, Stepan, and soon (hopefully) Kreider to fill out center ice but we have no legitimate puck moving d-men unless MDZ turns it around fast.
The power play was so sickeningly bad I’d rather see us not spend the money this summer for Richards and lock up an offensive defensmen, then see where we are in the summer of 2012…..
…maybe I’m being too conservative….
im not a huge fan of breaking the bank to get BR here but he would improve the PP just as much or more so than a defenseman. Look at Boston, they thought Kaberle would cure their PP woes but its been worse. i think a forward of brad richards’ skill would be better for the PP than any Dman that would be on the market

We can afford both. Probably not Ehrhoff, but Richards + Wisniewski may be possible or maybe Bieksa will be costing less than Ehroff.
And yes, BR really is world class and elite, and his numbers this year were not breaking down and dropping off. I do not think he is comparable to Drury or Gomez or other players we have gotten that truly were never elite enough for our contracts ever in their career.
Yup. if we resign our free agents wisely, and buy out Wolski and Drury we can sign both Richards and Wis.

Last year, yes
Since they’re trying to go forward with youth, no. Tanguay doesn’t make anyone around him better. His skill set is best put to use with people who can take advantage of his selflessness and vision. And while that may sound like a good match for Gaborik, it does nothing else for the rest of the team.
I still like him as a player though, and had he signed with the Rangers last year, I’d be all for having him back next season.
This may be out of left field...
(ok maybe out of the park) but what about a trade with Philly for Jeff Carter? They need to free up some cap space and dude is a goal scorer that can help for sure. Plus, there’s rumors Philly may be looking to shop him. Obviously not banking on rumors just a thought..
11yrs left on his deal that carries a $5mil cap hit and pays him over $6mil for the next 7yrs, peaking at $7mil for 2yrs.
So in other words, no thanks!!!

This is not an endorsement of anything:
27 y.o. Rick Nash, last 3 years: 105-107-212, +11, 822 SOG, $7.8m through 2018.
26 y.o Jeff Carter, last 3 years: 115-96-211, +52, 996 SOG, $5.27m through 2022.

keep in mind Carter has had help, Nash hasnt. Pretty interesting numbers though.

~Those Caps fans sure think they can make some noise.... too bad their team can't.
Browsing the QComp and QTeam numbers at BTN, the ‘help’ difference isn’t as large as one would think. Carter gets alot of defensive zone starts compared to Nash as well.
Breaking it out by strength:
Nash: ES 76-71-147 PP 22-33-55 SH 7-3-10
Carter: ES 77-65-142 PP 32-31-63 SH 6-0-6

I think in this situation, comparing what Nash brings to the table as opposed to Carter can not be determined by numbers… Nash plays a much more physical game as well as having to be the guy for Columbus, without him, there’s nothing, Carter has much better players around him at any given time than Nash does in Columbus.
@clalicata17
agreed :)
If we were to attempt to get either it would depend completely on what we would have to give up.
I’d assume it would be much less to acquire Carter because the Flyers are going to be in sever cap trouble in a few years and because Nash is the entire franchise in Columbus.

It would take less to get carter, but I do not like carter, he is a soft player, and really is not worth that long of an investment. Also the fact that Philly is within our division plays a large part of the equation, making the trade less likely.
As far as Nash, Columbus has lost nearly 80 million in the past 3 – 5 years which puts them in just as bad of a financial situation… realisticly neither of those players will be in a rangers uniform because Nash is the franchise and Carter is a Flyer…
Also speaking to having no help here… Nash has shown he can put up 70 points with no help on columbus… I’d gladly take his 70 points here… I’d rather Nash’s contract that Richards…
@clalicata17
Tanguay had 41 in 50 games in MTL, but got hurt, and was never truly healthy with TBL.
I’ve always liked Tanguay, think he’d be a good fit, but there are bigger needs than him at this point. If we’re still short a LW when it’s said and done, by all means they should go after him.

To me Tanguay is a good solid player, what we hoped Frolov would be.
we need a REAL scorer and number one center.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
Always liked Tanguay as a player
But his injuries have really taken a toll on him. If you told me that we could get the Tanguay from the Avalanche then sign me up. I would use him as what Frolov was supposed to be…secondary scoring. But as DB said above Richards>Tanguay

I have to say no to Tanguay
Not one thing in his game says he’s a fit to this current team.
