2011 NHL Entry Draft Prospects: Mark Scheifele
For the next installment in our daily prospect reviews I give you Mark Scheifele.
Scheifele is one of the most interesting prospects in the draft, and, according to all the mock drafts I have looked at, is a guy who will probably fall into the Rangers wheelhouse on draft day.
Scheifele had a fantastic rookie season in the OHL this past season, notching 22 goals and 53 assists for 75 points in 66 games. As of right now he fills a playmaking role for his Barrie Colts, but he has a fantastic shot and has the potential to be a legitimate goal scorer as his career moves on.
He also lead Canada forwards in scoring at the World Under 18s with six goals and two assists in seven games. If nothing else, his production at the U-18s proved what type of dynamic goal scoring talent he possesses. The fact that he was the go-to guy when Canada needed goals (despite having other quality goal scorers on their U-18 team) speaks volumes.
Join me after the jump for more scouting reports.
Here is the take from Bruins 2011 Draft Watch:
Mark Scheifele, C Canada- Young colt lived up to his Barrie namesake with a very good offensive performance. Scored one of the more memorable goals of anyone in the tourney against Finland when he read a bungled pass, split the defense, fought off a hook from behind and still managed to put the puck in the net with a nice backhand deke. 6-3 guys don't typically move the way he does with that ability to separate, so there is a lot of raw material to work with. At about 175, he's nowhere near as strong as he needs to be. However, he more than solidified a first-round draft grade in our view. He's a poor man's Ryan Johansen at this stage we feel- won't go as high, but his progress and potentially high ceiling will see him picked ahead of other higher-profile players who are bigger names and have been in draft discussions longer. Classic guy who came into the U18s with some questions to answer and passed with flying colors. Happens every year.
Here is the reports on his NHL Player Card:
NHL Central Scouting's Chris Edwards
"Mark protects the puck very well and will take it to the net while fighting through checks. He's got a great work ethic. His Barrie Colts have struggled this season and he has been relied upon to provide offense. He sees the ice very well and his playmaking ability is very good. He gets back quickly and works hard defensively."
Barrie head coach Dale Hawerchuk
"The opportunity was there for him (this season) and he ran with it. . . . He's great. Everybody loves being around Scheif, he comes in smiling every day, can't wait to get on the ice. That's infectious to everybody. And that's how you want it to be."
MORREALE'S: Two-way center posted 75 points, 13 PPG, against the best checking-line forwards in the league.
KIMELMAN'S: Center's obvious skills only will get better with coaching from Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk.
HOFFNER: Had good numbers in first OHL season; led Canada forwards in scoring at World U-18s.
Once again, we are hearing the types of things coaches and scouts want to when they look into potentially drafting a player.
I made sure to quote the mock draft blurbs, mainly because of Morreale's analysis. Unlike guys who play on stacked teams or go up against weaker defensive lines, Scheifele was going up against the best of the best in the OHL. The fact that he put up 1.14 points a game under those conditions makes him an even more
Call me crazy, but hearing that his attitude is infectious is one of the best things I read about him. Everyone agrees that the kid works his butt off every single second he is on the ice. Heart is a big factor with prospects, and it's safe to say that Scheifele has a tremendous amount of skill, and the heart to go along with it.
Scheifele would be a boost to the power play (13 of his 22 goals came with the man advantage), another area the Rangers have that needs work. In the end, you can never have too many playmakers, especially when the kid has such a high scoring upside.
So guys, what do you think? Do you want to see Scheifele in a Rangers' jersey?

Points per game is for nerds.. we need to know if he brings the jam on every shift.
I like this guy, great highlights of him at under 18. Hopefully they scoop him up. Can’t wait to see him at MSG opening night of the 2014-15 season.

Sign me up…to me it is (hopefully) between him or McNeill

I really like the sound of this kid. Nothing about consistency just a little small for his frame. If he drops to 15 we should definitely pick him.
Has anyone considered packaging a second round and the first to move to 7th or 8th?

If the Rangers move to the 7 or 8 slot then
They won’t be taking Scheifele. In all of the mock drafts I have see Scheifele has never gone higher than 13, and even went as low as 18 in one.
In the seven slot the Rangers would be looking at Ryan Strome or Sean Couturier.

I would be all for packaging a second rounder and a 1st to get either one of those two.

Sure, but...
The Rangers 1st and a second round pick wouldn’t be enough to get the 7th or 8th pick. You might be able to get the 12th for that.
I doubt the Rangers will trade up in this draft anyway because they are already missing their 3rd, 6th and 7th pick.
Don't be surprised to see the Rangers
potentially selling Brian Boyle high, and maybe landing s 2nd round pick out of that.

A trade would change things ofc.
I can see BB being traded, especially if he asks for a lot of money. He’s an expendable peace that is actually worth something. Don’t get me wrong, I like BB and I have no problem to see him with the Rangers next season. But if the Rangers don’t plan with him long term, now is the time to trade him.
I just don’t see how Boyle can ask for a lot of money. He doesn’t have much leverage. He can’t afford to holdout, he needs to prove that last season wasn’t a fluke before becoming a potential UFA next offseason.
Boyle should slot in around $1.4 – $2M dollars per season. If he does the sensible thing and signs a one year deal, I see him at the low end of that scale.
I agree that Boyle is expendable, but he’s expendable in the same way Betts was expendable. You HAVE to actually replace him. It’s not as simple as just adding Richards and saying other guys fall in place. Losing Boyle means Anisimov likes takes that 3rd line, defensive zone role, which then impacts his production/development.
To avoid that, you need to bring in a reliable 4th line center for what you expect to be cheaper than Boyle ($1m or so) that can win defensive zone draws and kill penalties.

Couturier shouldn’t make it to 7. Strome though is fine.

This is the guy I want them to get...
No work ethic issues, no compete issues, no question about the talent level of the opposition, and he’s North American.
I...
Must admit, I’m high on Namestiknov, but this kid sounds really good. I like what everyone has to say about him and I also like the fact that he is a right handed shot playing center. I think he would be a good choice at 15.
I know the glass 1/2-full outlook is that he’s good on the PP, but I’ll always consider it a flag when a guy has a hard time producing/dominating at even strength. He’s also on a terrible team so I’d be curious how many of his points are the proverbial “garbage time” variety.
Just quickly checking his performance against some of the top teams:
8 points in 6 games against Mississauga
1 point in 6 games against Niagara.
1 in 4 against Ottawa
9 in 4 against Oshawa
So it’s a mixed bag.
I do like that he played well for the U-18 team. Also like the notes on work ethic, and that he is used to playing tough opponents. I’d definitely prefer McNeil, but I suppose he’s a good silver medal when looking for centers.

Is it just me
or has every prospect we have looked at so far been an almost perfect fit for the rangers at the 15 spot…it really is a pick where they really can’t make a bad decision (well they can…but still)

Of course they are. We’re profiling guys who are realistic and solid options for 15 (or in Jurco’s case, a trade down from 15). Then they’ll go and take a defensemen again and we’ll all mourn.

if they draft another defensemen
I’ll probably suffer a mental break and end up in a straight jacket

I think had they taken Fowler last year, they might’ve taken the Oleksiak kid from Northeastern this year. McIlrath being in the organization should stop that from happening.
It would take something nuts like Hamilton or Murphy falling for the Rangers to even consider one, I think.

Brings up an interesting debate, doesn’t it? What if one of the highly-ranked d-men fall to 15? I suppose it depends on how they’re viewed by the Rangers scouting staff, among other factors, of course.
If somehow Hamilton fell to 15 (not sure what act of god that will take, but I’d have said that about Fowler/Gormley also), the Rangers would give it some serious thought. It also likely would mean McNeil and a couple others went early, so there’s that.
They really don’t need defensemen now though, and I (like to) think the organization knows it. They’re more likely to reach for someone like Jurco.

I’d take McNeill, but if he’s gone I’d take Scheifele… I strongly believe the Rangers need a big net presence guy… Callahan and Dubinsky are our main net guys, but they are also our better board play players and passes… we need a big forwards who’s going to net goals by planting in front of the net… that is a more pressing need IMO than Richards, how many times has a goalie taken shots from the Rangers that have been unimpeded? In no way am I trying to downplay the lack of a superstar playmaking center, but given our situation, building we have some play making centers in the wings, and I just don’t think paying richards over 7 mil for 5 years is worth the trouble it’s going to be in 2 years…
@clalicata17
Any idea...
on when this huge Chivas Regal ads are gonna disappear? They’re killing my t.o.b. at work.
I haven’t had the opportunity to see Scheifele play, but the more scouting reports I read, the more I like him. If he grows into that 6’ 3" frame and continues to develop his offensive game he could be a steal at 15.
6’ 3" 200+ lb. right-handed playmaking centerman are hard to come by. Being coached by Dale Hawerchuk (who was a pretty damned good center in his own right) can’t hurt.
No idea who this guy is, but they added another mock draft to NHL.com and he has the Rangers taking McNeill at 15… then Scheifele going 16th, Nicklas Jensen 17th, and Namestnikov 18th.
