2011 NHL Entry Draft Prospects: Boone Jenner
Our next prospect is another teammate of someone previously reviewed, Nicklas Jensen's teammate Boone Jenner. A 6'2", 196 lb center, he had a strong second season with the Oshawa Generals. Playing with current Rangers' prospect Christian Thomas, he posted a line of 25-41-66 in 63 games, with another 7-5-12 in 10 games during the OHL playoffs. In his previous year, he was named to the OHL all rookie team after scoring 19 goals and 49 points in 65 games.
Although he's not projected to be drafted as high, Jenner is actually ranked ahead of Jensen and Thomas Jurco, coming in at 18th according to central scouting. The reason is in part because he is a player with less 'home-run' potential than other prospects reviewed. Instead, he brings the energy and effort that coaches and especially fans crave. He's also a three zone player, who models himself after Flyers captain Mike Richards. He wants to be an all-situations player, which will make him an attractive commodity to teams.
From his nhl.com page:
NHL Central Scouting's Chris Edwards
"The phrase, 'I want 20 of those guys on my team,' gets overused, but it not only applies to Boone, he can be the poster boy for it. Boone does what it takes to win. He blocks shots, wins battles along the boards and is an outstanding forechecker. He wants to be first to the puck every time. He's solid on his skates and fights through checks on his way to the net."
From the scoutingreport.org:
Jenner has great size and strength for a 17 year old and is very hard to move off the puck. He’s not afraid to get physical and he can handle body contact effectively as well. He has a good release and likes to shoot the puck and wants the puck to be on his stick. Some may view this as a good trait, but with Jenner it borders heavily on immaturity as he is constantly calling for the puck at inopportune times. Jenner’s skating is still pretty choppy, but it’s improving, and aside from that there’s a lot that translates well to the NHL level, but he needs to find some consistency and make better decisions with the puck to be a more effective player.
From Kirk Leudeke of the Bruins Draft Watch:
Another passionate, character player who can do a little bit of everything, but may not be a high-end guy.....The biggest knock on Jenner coming into the year was on his skating, but scouts say he's noticeably improved. While he won't ever be one of those "plus skaters" you hear about, but when we watched him in January, he showed no major flaws in action against Kitchener......He's a strong faceoff guy who is always around the puck and seems to be the type of player who isn't just productive, but knows how to elevate his game to come through in the clutch. Jenner is also a strong defensive player who hustles, plays an honest game in all zones and does the little things like lifting the stick, taking the body and winning battles for loose pucks.
Originally slotted in as a late 1st rounder, slowly but surely Boone has been moving his way up the mock draft boards, where now several suggest he could go in the 16-20 range. That means he's another option at center, beyond Mark McNeil and yesterday's prospect Mark Scheifele. However, should he be taken at 15? That's for you to answer.

I think he might be a fall back if some players on our wish list are taken early. The Thomas link is interesting and might make it worthwhile to spend a 15th pick on him…plus he is a character guy which thankfully we look at now.
Imagine him centering Dubi and Cally…that would be a tough line to play against and fit right in to a Torts system.

Jenner is not the player for the Rangers to pick at 15.
Yes, it’s nice to have those kind of energy players but the Rangers already have Cally, Prust and Dubi. I want the Rangers to go for a potential first line player and Jenner doesn’t seem to be that guy to me. If he’s still available in the second round I’m all for it but not in the first.
agreed
at 15, especially if there are others options on the table, you look elsewhere.
That’s not a knock on Jenner, it’s jut saying the Rangers need firs line material. Jenner doesn’t really figure to be that.

I don't know
Of course if there is a surefire 1st liner available the Rangers should pick him. But if there is a player with strong first line skills available at 15, there is a good chance there are questions about him. And right now, I am not sure the Rangers should pass up a solid 2nd liner for a hit or miss possible 1st liner. I don’t think the description as an “energy player” does Jenner justice if that means he is being compared with Prust. Of course, if his skill level is Prustian they should pass in the 1st round, regardless of energy level. But his skill level is far higher. And getting a player like him to meld with Step, Krieder, AA, Cally, Dubi, Thomas and Gabby (and maybe/hopefully Grachev) in a couple of years may be a good choice.
Is it a good idea to have someone that models himself after Richards on a team with Duby?
I kid, I kid

I agree with all of you.
Character guys are great, don’t get me wrong. But I like the position we are in with Thomas and Kreider and think it’s about time the Rangers went for a game breaker. Bang or bust let’s take a shot and have other teams wondering ….. Why don’t we have this guy? Like I find myself saying about other players on other teams when we play them.
I also don’t like the Knocks on his skating and maturity. Let’s go for it on this one is my philosophy and I’d like to see them with Namestiknov or Sheifle . I want a goal scorer. But hey that is just my opinion.
We need goals!

Two guys that probably won’t fall, McNeil is the top realistic target for me.

Anyone think itis worth it...
To trade both our second round picks for a really high second round pick and grab a first round and a second round player that are similar in skill and see which pans out? I’m not sure if this is even possible to do . These drafts always mees up my thinking though when you figure how late guys like Henrik Lundquist and Henrik Zetterberg went.
Does anyone know of anyone who may be a steal that we haven’t mentioned? Or does anyone have any guesses, if the rangers were going to pull of a sleeper pick like last year, who that might be? I hadn’t eben heard of McIlrath until they called his name and I was looking at all the mock drafts.
when it comes down to it, no matter how sure you are of any given player, you will NEVER be able to gauge how successful he will be in the NHL until he actually makes it there (if they do at all) The only thing that is set in stone is body type (height, weight to an extent) and usually what kind of player they are, be it more playmaking or a sniper or whatever. I just want to see a solid player who can make the jump as soon as possible. I’m tired of having guys who never develop or just never live up to their potential, I’d love to have Namestiknov; might as well take a chance, you never know until he starts putting pucks in NHL nets.

Ditto! Most important to me, who’s gonna get here NOW and help us out.
This post is crying because there is no Frankie anymore.

i was just thinking that
I kind of miss his haiku rants that would fill these prospect posts

I asked this on twitter and figured why not ask it here
Here are the top ten picks:
1) Edmonton
2) Colorado
3) Florida
4) New Jersey
5) New York Islanders
6) Ottawa Senators
7) Atlanta Trashers (soon to be Winnipeg)
8) Columbus Blue Jackets
9) Boston Bruins (via Toronto)
10) Minnesota Wild
What would you guys give to move up into one of those spots in the first round?

Easy
The #15 and one of the second rounders. But nothing more. It doesn’t seem like this draft has the same quality as last year, so sticking at 15 would be fine unless they really felt their was a kid they couldn’t live without that might be available at the 6th slot.
to which spot though?

I doubt any team in the first 5 spots would be willing to move. I think the most likely to be willing to switch might be Boston or Winnepeg. But then giving up the second rounder might be much for a draft where a lot of the players seem to meld past the first 6 spots.
Do you think it would even be worth trading up, if you’re not moving up to the first 6?
I'd go somewhere in the top ten
I think Columbus is a good target to offer a package of our 1st and 2nd rounders with a lower level player (boyle/prospal/whoever) for their #8 and target a guy like Strome or Mika Zibanejad

I would give a first and a second as the obvious option, that’s what we did for staal. I could maybe see a team with a lot of cap space having some interest in Wolski. If we could throw him away with a first rounder and maybe a 3rd a fourth, we keep our 2nd round, get a higher first round and dump Wolski. I could see this working with 7-10 minus Boston because they’re already huge.

I know it’s a pipe dream but if I were able to have any choice of player other than rnh it’d definitely be Ryan strome first, glad namestnikov second and then mark McNeil

THN Mock Draft
Just finished reading The Hockey News Mock draft and they have NYR picking Joel Armia! Passing up on better picks such as McNeill (predicted #17), Jurco #28, Scheifele #30, Khokhlachev #16, Saad #18, Jensen #20…sometimes I think THN are clueless.
