Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Joe Nieuwendyk, aware that his team can't afford to bring Brad Richards back, has decided he wants to get something instead of nothing for his star center. This process will be made complicated because Richards has a NTC.

"(The search) is going well," Nieuwendyk said. "We've met some impressive candidates. Hopefully I would like to get it done before the draft – certainly before free agency."

Well, it would be really smart to get it done before July 1st and free agency because by then you'd have no rights to trade Joe. Whether you think it is worth it or not (I don't), if Richards' rights go to another team that team has a huge inside track on the competition. Not only because they get a few more weeks to try and wine and dine Richards, but because it would mean Richards waived his NTC to be there and to try and make it work with that team. Definitely food for thought if his rights get dealt to New York or another team.

I know that many of you already assumed (correctly) that Richards' rights could be had, but now it is official. Thought I would throw it up for further discussion to see if you guys think it is worth it or not and what asset(s) you would be willing to give up to have the inside track on landing Brad Richards.

First and foremost dig I’d like to know how true you guys think any of the million rumors I see flying around about him not even wanting to come to New York and so on and so on and so on might be….

by Mr. Avery to you on Jun 10, 2011 11:56 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I doubt they hold any merit

There were original concerns about him not wanting to come to a big market team, but I’m not sold on them yet.

Tough call, I think he would probably be more attracted to New York than Toronto. He has played under Torts, he is chummy with Avery, and the media here is tough… but hockey isn’t religion here like it is in Toronto (and all of Canada).

I saw a headline somewhere today that said Richards had interest in returning to Tampa. It was in passing though, I don’t even remember where it was.

You can see coverage on that at rawcharge.com, apparently there are some rumblings about Richards taking a paycut to return to Tampa Bay and be a part of the exciting stuff happening in Tampa Bay.

I hesitate to think it is going to happen because they need to lock up a lot of important pieces from this year’s playoff team (including Steven friggin’ Stamkos) and they have much more pressing needs organizationally. The fact of the matter is that they already have two elite centers, they don’t need a third. What they do need is help in net and some defense. They would be making a terrible mistake if they focused too much on Richards.

  1. - There is no way Richards discounts the Rangers even if he doesn’t want to come here because he wants a BIDDING WAR and having the Rangers in the mix is a MUST.
  2. - There is ZERO chance TB can sign Richards: Stamkos, they need goalies, and Purcell and Brewer need to be dealt with. No cap space to fit Brad unless he wants $2M per to play there. Ha-ha.
  3. - Brad loves small cities (TB and Dallas). Buffalo = New owner, willing to spend, wants a marquee player, has cap space, and is a small media market. With Miller and Vanek there it could be enticing. Buffalo could very well be a landing spot after all is said and done.
  4. - I can’t see Brad going to Toronto as it is the hockey media microscope of the league.
  5. - LA? They have centers and west coast travel? Forget it.
  6. - I think it comes down to the Rangers and Buffalo.

by Richter1994 on Jun 11, 2011 6:58 AM EDT reply actions

1. I don’t think he wants a bidding war. He knows his services are desired by more than a handful of teams. Though, I did read an article about him back in juniors, and he was pretty cocky (deservedly so) so you never know he’s outgrown that. I don’t think he pulls a Kovalchuk and goes where the most money is, but you’re right, he probably doesn’t take a discount.

2. Tampa apparently has more than enough money to sign both Richards and Stamkos. Who would you rather have: Stamkos, Purcell, and Brewer; or Stamkos and Richards?

3. He was drafted by Tampa and traded to Dallas. No way to know if he wouldn’t be interested in an LA or NY.

4. True. Plus their goaltending is still up in the air.

5. They seem to be building a monster in LA… why not be part of it?

6. Your suggestion of Buffalo is intriguing. They do have an almost Lundqvist-esque goaltender in Miller, and while their defense isn’t as good as the Rangers, their forwards are better. And with Connolly leaving that opens up cash. The only player they really need to re-sign is Gerbe at this point. They are a playoff team, and they are a center and two defensemen from being legit contenders.

by Hoggo on Jun 11, 2011 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Stamkos will take up almost $8M of the $23M. That leaves $15M. 2 goalies? If they get Vokoun and a back up then you figure $6M combined. That leaves $9M. They love Purcell, Brewer, and Bergenheim. No way TB fits Richards in unless they do the unthinkable and trade Stamkos (no way, lol). I really feel that Buffalo may look to make a big splash here. They have the cap space and a willing new owner.

by Richter1994 on Jun 11, 2011 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

actually I just looked and Buffalo doesn’t have as much cap space as I thought. But they could sign Richards and fill with kids as Connolly and Gerber are probably out.

by Richter1994 on Jun 11, 2011 8:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry meant Grier not Gerbe, lol

by Richter1994 on Jun 11, 2011 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Yzerman came from Detroit, he’s not going to break the bank for a goalie. The separation between alot of guys is very, very small. Sure, maybe they go after Vokoun, but it’s more likely they’ll re-sign Smith and get someone like Boucher, or make a trade for with SJ for Greiss, or even Vancouver for Schneider.

Schneider would make sense

Or one of the Jonnies in LA.

Does anyone think Evgeni Nabokov is in play? Tampa and the Islanders have already been trading partners, so they’re on good terms. And since the Isles have locked up Montoya, they may be open to trading Nabokov.

That’s another option, since he’d presumably be fairly cheap.

Regardless, a starter and and back up goalie will cost at least $3-$4M combined. I don’t see how Richards fits under TB’s cap after giving Stamkos almost $8M per.

by Richter1994 on Jun 12, 2011 7:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Stamkos

already takes up $3.75 against the cap, so even if he was to get a raise to $8M (unlikely), its only a $4M addition, not $8M. They can fit Richards on Tampa at a Cap rate somewhere close to St Louis’s, although I agree with Dig Deep that they would be making a mistake in doing so. Unless of course Stamkos shifts to Wing. There are other UFA’s and RFA’s to account for, but none of them will be getting more than a $1-$1.2M raise at most. Some(including Brewer) could be seeing the same or less money in their next contracts. And Roloson may come back…

by Skuba7 on Jun 12, 2011 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Stamkos has ZERO against the cap right now. The $23M does not include Stamkos, 2 goalies, Purcell, Brewer, Bergenheim, and couple of others according to cap geek.

by Richter1994 on Jun 12, 2011 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

You are correct

But a top-quality lineup can still be done, as long as Richards doesn’t require a Vinny contract.

Problem is… Stamkos isn’t taking 7 mil, and Purcell will make more than 1 mil. Also, the cap most likely won’t be that high.

It wont work. Stamkos is getting atleast 8 mil, Purcell will get between 1.5 and 2, and the cap will be at like 62 mil. That puts them around 4 mil over.

Why would Stamkos get that kind of money, when they have Vinny that they overpaid already. SS has to understand he won’t be getting that kind of money on that team, he can get a lifetime contract if he wants, but not at that money.
You are right in that Purcell will most likely receive more than $1, probably $2M, just means MAB can be let go.
Alot of the debate going on here is hoping and praying the Cap goes to $63M+ in order to land Richards, figured the same could be done for Tampa.
Point is, it can be done if Tampa wants to most likely, although I think it would be foolish on their end.

by Skuba7 on Jun 12, 2011 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Skuba, Moshe is correct. Stamkos = $7.5M+, Purcell = $3M+, Bergenheim needs a contract, Brewer (who they love) = $4M+. 2 goalies = $5M+. The only way TB gets Richards is if the trade LeCav, in essence trading LeCav for Richards. I like Richards better of the 2.

by Richter1994 on Jun 12, 2011 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s much more feasible than you guys give it credit for. If Purcell gets $3M, TB is doing something terribly wrong.
But no need for it to go further, as I dont see Tampa doing this regardless…

by Skuba7 on Jun 12, 2011 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Purcell deserves 2.5+ mil a year. You’re undervaluing him. Also, Stamkos is a top 5 player in hockey. If Crosby and Malkin are making 8.7 mil, Ovechkin 9.7, and Staal 8+ as well, Stamkos will be in that same ballpark.

He’s a phenomenal talent, and regardless of how much other guys on his team are making, he will get 8+ mil. There’s no way he’s taking 7 mil in order for Brad Richards to take 6.5

That’s just not happening..

Buffalo=Toilet. It’s not a small city, it’s an ice village. Tampa and Dallas might not be New York or LA, but there’s plenty to do, the weather is great, and you can golf all season. When your cities most famous restaurant serves wings, and cultural landmark is a waterfall we’re not talk about a “city” at all anymore.

The new guy in Buffalo doesn’t have any more money they Golisano, and he’s going to find the same problems. His money will never be green enough, and even if he finds a top UFA who’s willing to take it, he’s never going to bring in the revenue justify the spending, and the team will bleed money quick. Unless they put “Casino Niagara” ads on the front of their jerseys, he won’t find sponsors, and the fan base won’t support “premium seating” like big cities can sell. The place is beat.

by BuckarooClub on Jun 12, 2011 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t disagree Buck but this guy does not like media scrutiny. He has to go somewhere. And by process of elimination I think it’s the Rangers or the Sabres. Of course another team could emerge but they would need the cap space, the $$ to sign him, and a chance to win.

by Richter1994 on Jun 13, 2011 6:24 AM EDT up reply actions

When you talk about prime Free Agents, you can pretty much throw Edmonton, Buffalo, Calgary, the Islanders, and now Winnepeg too out of the mix. If the Isles get a new arena, they could come off that list, but the rest are there to stay. No one is going to any of those places.

Think of it this way. You’re in your car after a concert, and you have to take a HUGE dump. You’re out of town staying at a hotel, let’s say a Ritz Carlton. You’ve got a suite, with a golden toilet seat and a bidet that shoots warm spring water waiting up in your room. This is teams like NY, Boston, Montreal, Detroit. Original 6 teams, always lots of money, always lots of fans, the best possible situation you can play in. A little closer then that you’ve got the lobby bathroom at the Ritz. you won’t get the same privacy, there’s no TV to watch or bidet, and you’ve gotta tip the attendant. I’d put this as a team like Pittsburgh, San Jose, or Anaheim. Things are good right now, but when the team stops winning, they are kind of forgotten, and it can be tough for the team to make ends meet.

Next you’ve got your options between the concert and your hotel. A McDonald’s bathroom (Carolina, St. Louis, Colorado) – not a bad choice you can count on it being clean and stocked with soap and TP, could be packed and long wait, could be empty. The other choice is a Hess Express accross the street (Tampa, Dallas, Columbus, ) you’re not sure what type of facility to expect, maybe filthy, maybe no TP, and you also might have to buy a slim jim before they even let you use it. BUT, you can buy a tall boy for the ride home when you’re done, so there’s something appealing about it, and it’s closer the other options. Some of these spots are appealing to players who didn’t want to be in the Ritz to begin with, they thought it was too flashy.

Finally we get to the teams mentioned above, they are the stinking porto john, surrounded with flies and overflowing, 10 feet away in the same parking lot as you. As good as it would feel to pinch that loaf, you have to go inside to do it. Who knows what’s in there, and the whole time you’re worrying some drunk asshole knocks it over while your taking a dump.

by BuckarooClub on Jun 13, 2011 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

LOL, very funny Buck. You had me laughing out loud my friend. Again, what you said is 100% correct and I agree with it. However, there are players out there, big-time players, that do not like the bright spotlight the big market cities have. Take LeBron, perfect example. Miami? Really? Why? Because: 1) it’s not NY’s media and 2) he can hide behind Wade and Bosh if he fails. But guess what? He just found out the hard way that, even though they lost as a team, IT’S STILL HIS FAULT, according to the media (and the fact that he disappeared in almost every 4th quarter in the playoffs). Richards appears to be one of those “introverts.” Just wants to go about his business and collect his money. Buffalo may be one of “those places” you describe (lol) but they have talent up there which means he has a chance to win (Richards can dish to Stafford) and they have the willingness and the cap space to spend. He plays 41 other games outside of Buffalo so what is he really missing? I could be totally wrong but the Richards camp needs to create a market of more than one team as of July 1st and throwing cold water on the obvious choice of the Rangers helps with that strategy. For all we know he signs with the Rangers at 12:01AM on July 1st and all this is moot. I was confident of that before but not so much now (see? throwing cold water on the obvious really works).
