Rangers Analysis: Breaking Down The Tim Erixon Trade

When news broke that Glen Sather swapped Roman Horak and two second round picks for Tim Erixon and Calgary's fifth round pick this season, Rangers nation rejoiced. The trade was another one of Sather's gems, and gave the Rangers an elite prospect for very little in return.

Erixon automatically makes the Rangers already elite defensive corps even stronger. He's a young defenseman with ridiculous upside on both sides of the ice. Here is his scouting report from Elite Prospects:

A very smart defenseman that plays a solid two-way game. Erixon is not very spectacular, but plays an effective and rather simple game. He does not throw his body around, but can be aggressive and has active stickwork. Hockey sense is very good and so is his offensive positioning. Not a pure offensive force, but has enough skills to put up points and quarterback the powerplay if needed. Furthermore, he has good size and mobility and handles the puck well.

At the end of the day, as a Rangers fan, you can only have two concerns about this deal. You can either be worried about the two second round picks or about losing Horak.

If you're worried about the two second round picks let me reassure you; this move was a no brainer. There has been a lot of talk around here about Sather using the Rangers two second round picks to trade up and get another pick in the first round. Erikson would have re-entered this year's draft if he didn't sign a deal, and he was easily considered to be a top-15 prospect. In some circles he was even projected to go in the top-10. So essentially, Sather used his two second rounders to get a top-10 talent. Tell me you don't do that every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

If you're worried about the Rangers losing Horak let me also reassure you; it's not a big deal. For starters Horak was never projected to be more than a third liner. His best attribute was his faceoff ability, albeit something New York struggled with last season, but didn't really have any other stats that truly stood out. Despite a good WHL season this past year, Horak didn't seem to even be a contender to fight for a spot on the team out of camp. At the end of the day, there are plenty of Roman Horak's out there, there are very few Tim Erixon's.

Join me after the jump for how Erixon will impact the Rangers.

Star-divide

Let's start with what Erixon will bring to the table defensively.

He's a good skater, have a fair amount of size and isn't afraid to take the body. His hockey IQ is off the charts, and his stick work in the defensive zone is one of his best calling cards. He's been very effective at keeping opposing players off balance with well placed stick checks, and he knows when to take the body and when to take the puck.

Offensively, it's more good news for the Rangers.

He put up five goals and 19 assists for 24 points in 48 games for Skellefteå of the SEL. He also added three goals and five assists for eight points in 18 playoff games. Those numbers are much more impressive then they look, especially when you factor into the equation the fact that Erixon is a 20-year-old playing against men in one of the best hockey leagues in the world. His offensive abilities are underrated, and almost everyone will tell you he has a very high offensive ceiling, and he will probably end up being one of the guys the Rangers relies on to point the power play.

New York suddenly has what seems to be the youngest and most promising defensive corps in the NHL. Erixon brings a rare blend of size and speed, while adding some offensive flare from the point. He will have a fantastic shot at making the team out of camp, a chance he didn't believe he would have with Calgary, and can make an real impact on this team in his rookie year.

Make no mistake, prospects playing the SEL are much more prepared for making the jump right to the NHL than others. The SEL is not a junior league, it's one of the best hockey leagues in the world and Erixon played above his years there. If he were to make the team out of camp, he would be much more prepared then someone coming from the OHL or the WHL.

Now let's move onto what this trade means for the Rangers off the ice.

Since the Rangers used their two second round picks to take Erixon, it's almost a guarantee that Sather and Gordie Clark will draft a forward with their first round pick. This means the Rangers will be adding some offense to their pipeline on draft day.

The other thing this trade brings is some trade speculation. What will happen to guys like Matt Gilroy, Michael Del Zotto and Pavel Valentenko? It's pure speculation on my part but it seems like a defenseman or two might get moved.

Anyway, focusing on what we do know, thoughts on the trade?

i do agree that a defensemen cough del zotto cough will be moved. and gilroy will be gone by next season.

and i guess valentenko is the odd man out? idk.

Well, McIllrath isn’t making this team next year, so if MDZ is moved, Valentenko probably makes the roster (excluding FA signings)

I’d say we see a FA signing instead of Valentenko… probably a veteran for atleast the beginning of the year… unless they feel tenko has made huge strides

We got 2 first round picks in the top 15, our own pick and Erixon. What’s not to like? This is probably a prelude to another bigger trade. I feel like MDZ will be the odd man out as he’s the one with any kind of trade value. He could be packaged to get an elite player. Also, this squashes any fears that the Rangers would take another D in the draft. Full steam ahead for centers/forwards. Maybe they package something and move up to get a Strome?

by Richter1994 on Jun 2, 2011 6:18 AM EDT reply actions

Del Zotto and Gilroy are the only pure offensive defenseman that the Rangers have (not including Redden, who will most likely be in Hartford again.) It’s highly unlikely that the Rangers qualify Gilroy, and he’ll be free to walk.

Del Zotto is the most likely candidate to stick around… Gilroy, Eminger, and McCabe are probably the ones gone come opening night.

by Hoggo on Jun 2, 2011 7:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I am betting Gilroy is not qualified (ah, duh, lol) and he re-signs for something like 2 years at $1M or less per. Gilroy really wants to stay here (I know someone that knows him well). If someone deems MDZ to have upside potential and is willing to pay for it then why not explore it? We need elite talent here with Richards as the start. IMO, Richards plus another high level player (either another scorer or offensive D) along with the core will make them competitive next season. Assuming a healthy King of course.

by Richter1994 on Jun 2, 2011 8:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe that Gilroy has a chance to stay with the Rangers. He’ll be relatively cheap and he showed some promise in the playoffs. Though unless he improves his game, he’ll find himself in the same position he was last season as the 6th or 7th dman.

Not sure about MDZ. I’ve heard nothing from the Rangers that would indicate that they’ve given up on him but if they could get an elite forward, I think they will at least consider it.

by M.R.M. on Jun 2, 2011 8:35 AM EDT up reply actions

totally agree on both points. they will not publicly say anything about MDZ because they do not want to downgrade his potential trade value if they do decide to go in that direction. which is extremely possible.

by Richter1994 on Jun 2, 2011 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Your opinion

Do you think if Gilroy is resigned would be moved to Wing? I defintely see Eminger, and McCabe gone now.

by gene4240 on Jun 2, 2011 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Redden offensive?

I assume that by referring to Redden as one of the “only pure offensive defensive” you are referring to the offense of receiving all that money and cap space for no production, and not to his scoring ability.

I would doubt it unless there’s a target they’re falling over themselves trying to get at. That package isn’t enough to get to the top 5, so you’re looking at best at the 6-10 range.

IMO, if/when they make another move, it’s going to be for a proven forward.

agree, they would have to be 7-10 to get a Strome, Ziban-whatever, Bartschi, McNeill (rising like Johansen last year), or even Armia maybe.

by Richter1994 on Jun 2, 2011 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m fairly certain (as much as one can be with an unpredictable draft) that Baertschi, McNeil, and Armia will all be available at 10. The top 9 (which incl. Strome and ZIbanejad) are likely to slot in as such, in some order.

I’d venture that at least one of Baertschi, McNeil and Armia is available at 15. The only way they won’t be is if the defensemen (Hamilton, Murphy, and Beaulieu) fall again.

I have seen a lot of mock drafts having Bartschi going around 10, McNeill going at 12, and Armia going at 13 with Hamilton going at 4, Murphy at 8, and Beaulieu going at 14. The one I see maybe falling is Armia because there are rumblings of “effort issues” that may scare away some teams. http://www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Mock-Draft/ this is an example of what I have seen in general.

Brilliant trade.

Two second round picks for a first round player and getting for Horak what they spent, a 5th round pick.

What I really like is that this trade gives Sather a lot of options. With all the dmen in the organization he finally has something to trade with, without sacrificing the core. He can trade up in the draft if the Rangers have someone particular they want or use some of the dmen to get a forward. I think we all prefer Sather having some trade options instead of him signing free agents.

Otherwise they would have tried to trade him earlier, getting a better return. Instead, they were blindsided (or maybe not, the management in Calgary has been pretty brutal the last 5 years).

To a degree but it seems like they did not approach him for a contract until towards the very end. I guess from his perspective it seemed like they were not very interested in getting into the line-up, just to protect their interest.

Having watched video and reading about this, it seems like a pretty solid deal. Kid isn’t spectacular, but just like report said, good hockey sense and a solid game, which can always develop. Hopefully with the proper development, he can improve the PP and provide good presence.

I wouldn’t mind seeing him start down in Hartford….what’s the consensus? Hockey Futures already has him ranked as the 2nd best d-man prospect behind McDonagh, who hasn’t graduated yet.

Also, how big is he? I’ve seen reports ranging him from 6’0-6’3/170-210.

I don't see MDZ being moved anytime soon

I do think Gilroy’s a goner and I’m fine with that because he’s a seventh dman imo. Erixon is highly likely to make the team, but so was McD last year and he spent a few months in the minors. Erixon though won’t have aguy like Sauer in his path like McD did in training camp. As far as Valentenko I see him spending anotjer year in Hartford. I see MDZ getting afresh slate from Torts and hopwefully being an asset on the pp again.

by graves9 on Jun 2, 2011 11:14 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Valentenko's out of options.

It’s either trade him, put him on the big club, or let him go on waivers. That’s why he’d be a good piece to deal either to move up in the draft or to acquire Brad Richards’ free agent rights.

is that the top four Dmen are all twenty point guys that won’t add much offense. MDZ is the ony guy that could run the pp. Who knows if Erixon will be able to run the PP from the jump.

I would still want a big shot on there and have the other pointman be able to distribute properly to either the big point shot or back down low to the QB. I think Erixon could fill that role and hopefully McIlrath can be the shot eventually.

I love the defensive depth Sather is stockpiling. McD, Sauer, MDZ, Valentenko, McIlrath, and now Erixon (not to mention Staal/Girardi). The only remaining question is indeed whether or not Sather has something in the works regarding the acquisition of top line talent.

I’m okay with Sather shopping some type of package of these prospects for a proven scorer OR a top pick in the draft with that kind of upside.

If its up to me, the ones I prefer NOT to shop are McD (great skater, plays with poise beyond his age), Sauer (underrated, played strongly all year as a rookie, could be a future rock of this team, sticks up for his teammates and his King), and McIlrath (potential to be the biggest beast Broadway has seen in some time).

Well I think that is it, that’s our D for a long time. I see Giradi going after his contract is up which gives McIlrath another year in Juniors, 1 year in AHL and 1 more splitting time between AHL and NHL to see if he is ready and they can let Girardi walk.

Though nothing now says that Valentenko is NHL ready and it’s not a lock for him. Erixon seems like a lock and McIlrath with his size and toughness should be able to make the jump. Just a question if its 3-4 or 5-6

theres always a chance, but realistically no… he will be back in Juniors to develop more, he has made good strides this year, but he’s not NHL ready, I’d say he’d have a better shot next year than this year… He also may need a full season in the AHL to get accustomed to the speed of the game IMO…

Then now between MDZ, McIlrath, and Erixon we’re are virtually guaranteed to have, at least for someone that’ll be essentially a 3rd pairing defenseman, a good if not great defenseman. Few years down the line its more than likely we get two of those guys (My bets are MDZ and Erixon) to improve enough where we’re playing all three pairings roughly equal time. I like this trade too

Horak may one day grow into a solid 3rd line forward, but on this team he was clearly behind MZA, Bourque, Thomas and Hagelin among small forward prospects (and maybe Lindberg and Fasth too), and behind Kreider and Grachev also when large forward prospects are taken into account. I don’t like giving up 2nd round picks lightly, since there are some good players in the 2nd round every year, but they are hit and miss, and Erixon is better than anyone they would be likely to get in the 2nd round anyway.

It is great to see all the talented young defensemen coming up, or already up – MDZ, Staal, McD, Sauer, Erixon, McWrath, ValTank (and Girardi isn’t that old). Although this does exacerbate the left handedness of the d-corp, since Staal, MDZ, McD, Erixon and ValTank are all lefties. So if Staal, MDZ, McD and Erixon will be in the regular line up next season, they will need to play a lefty on the right side. Hopefully Erixon or McD can handle that, since I don’t think I ever saw Staal or MDZ play the right side in their time with the Rangers. Although of course another trade could be coming.

I would gladly pay 4 #1s to sign him. Then we can trade MDZ and Erixon to hopefully replace a couple of those picks.

I don’t think LA is in need of young defensemen… they have Johnson, Doughty, and Martinez. I doubt St. Louis would shop either Oshie or Perron, I think they like the forward corps they have.

Colorado would be the best bet, since their defense is absolutely horrendous.

Good deal by Sather...

This makes sense for a few future prospective deals. I honestly smell a huge deal. Likely a really huge player.

I hope so.

Man would I love to see any of those boys in the Blue but I don’t see any of those teams letting them go. Who would you think would be the most likely?

Erixon

Great move by Slats, who now is starting to amaze me….
Does anyone have any info on Pashinin., another D-Man prospect. I believe he’s Russian and may have been another D the Rangers got when they traded Gomez to the habs.
My bet is that Slats will make a move or 2 at the draft to get some 2011 pics.

Valentenko was the other component of the *cough*McDonagh*cough* trade.

Mikhail Pashnin has been playing in the KHL since he was drafted – he was the first overall pick in the KHL draft – the NYR took him in the 7th round in the NHL draft that same year (2009).

He impressed folks at the prospects camp last year – came in and threw his body around – totally unafraid of anything – and he doesn’t have the size to match the attitude. Reports are that he wants to come to North America to play now. He’ll likely need a year in Whale-land to see if he can adjust and progress.

I hope he plays with Staal. I don’t care if they are the right handedness to compliment each other.

I don’t care if they don’t have chemistry.

They are both tall, pale, and ginger.

Jan Erixon

Jan Erixon was my favorite Ranger back when, but I have to say if Tim has any offensive ability, he inherited it from his mother. Jan could have scored 50 goals a year if he had any scoring touch at all. His hard work, great effort along the boards and his forechecking created a whole bunch of scoring opportunities for himself and his linemates. But he could never capitalize on those in close chances.

its prob why his son became a defenseman, Jan was one of the best “shadow defenders” of the time.
