Brad Richards Days in Dallas are Over

[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 06/02/11 4:52 PM EDT BTW is easily becoming one of our top newsmen, thanks BTW!]

TSN is reporting that the Dallas Stars will not be offering a contract to forward Brad Richards, which means he is hitting the free agent market.

Quote from TSN:

With the Dallas Stars' ownership situation not likely to be settled until later this summer, the team will not be making a contract offer to Brad Richards.

Richards, who becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1, will be playing elsewhere next season.

The Stars would be interested in trading exclusive negotiating rights with Richards before July 1, but such a move would require Richards to waive his no movement clause and there are no guarantees of that happening.

Quote from Puckdaddy

Big bombshell from the Dallas Stars today, via Bob McKenzie of TSN: "With the ownership situation in Dallas not likely to be settled until later in summer, Dallas will not be making contract offer to Brad Richards(notes)." Joe Nieuwendyk is going to get slaughtered for not trading him, which is a joke. The team was in the playoff hunt until the final day of the season; and given the ownership situation, keeping him was Nieuwendyk's only shot at re-signing him. In other news, congrats to either the Leafs or the Rangers on your new No. 1 center. [TSN]

Here we go Rangers fans!, it's time to get excited, we have a clear shot at landing Brad Richards now. Let's make this happen!

It’s all falling into place. If he really wants to come here and play and by all accounts he does…past history with Tort and hell he is vacationing with Avery right now….all he has to do is refuse to waive his NMC when Toronto offers up something for his negotiating right and wait for the Rangers low-ball but only offer they can take.

I’d be interested in this happening… at least the offer. If he refuses to waive his NMC for a trade, there’s a good chance he has no intentions of signing in Toronto…. better to know early, before the draft in particular.

Yeah I think it’s a shitty thing to do. But then again he might look to try to get Dallas as much of a return as he can.

But he apparently has been quoted that he would play for Toronto so who knows.

I don’t think he came out and said that. This is the only quote I could find

‘"When the time comes, if that’s an option, Toronto is always a No. 1 hockey destination," says Richards when asked about playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. "It would be great being a Canadian playing in Toronto but we’re not even close to that bridge yet and, like I said, I’m focused here."’

But big difference in what he says publicly and what he says personally. It could just be a way for him to let others know what his intentions are without being able to come out and directly say it.

I heard him on NHL Live during the playoffs. He gave the usual, I just want another chance at the Cup. If he truly means it, then Toronto should not be in the picture. It will be interesting to see if he sacrifices money for a more established Cup contender.

5th round from Calgary and negotiating rights to Gilroy would be my offer. They can actually look to get a body back in this and a draft pick.

I can imagine any other team puts up much more than that knowing in the back of their minds that he might only want to play for the Rangers or at least will wait to hear from NYR before he signs anywhere else.

Exactly… it’s the same situation with Carmelo Anthony. Why pay when you can get him for free? Richards is under no obligation to see that Dallas gets something in return for him leaving.

I actually can’t believe Dallas made it this easy. Nieuwendyk shouldn’t have been so greedy at the trade deadline. I doubt he was asking for the king’s ransom that was rumored, but he should have at least tried to get something reasonable… he should have known that the ownership situation wouldn’t have been resolved by the opening of free agency.

Anyways, Richards won’t go to Toronto. Their defense is good, but their goaltending is in the air and only Kessel is a guaranteed star. Lupul was a great pickup for them, but that’s all they have going for them until Kadri shows something. The Rangers, on the other hand, have balls-deep defense, and a top-5 goalie. The forward corps is pretty much in the same situation as Toronto, but the whole package has Rangers in the lead.

I say Richards to LA or NY.

I have always disliked firsty-firsties....

well that’s what i call them. There’s also the lasty lasty, such as Robinson Cano or the very rare and much maligned firsty firsty girly girly, such as Jody Shelley.

but I digress. I agree with NewburghHockey. I do not want Richards and I have several reasons.

First, he is coming of a major concussion. That is always big albatross. It makes a player more susceptible to further concussion, even from normal checks. See Savard for proof. And players can play knowing they had a concussion and could get another at anytime. Lindros’ game was never the same after the Stevens hit. I am not saying Richards would follow suit but it has happened. It is their livelihood. And we cannot afford another soft player. I am looking at you Gabby.

Second, the guy is 30. How many good years does he have left? He will want to finish his career here. I do not want a 7-8 million salary for an over the hill player in 4-5 years. We cannot compromise tomorrow for today. If he signs for 3-4 years, I would sleep much better. And thanks to the Devils, we must tread lightly with the funky salaries. No more $500,000 for a player’s remaining years, especially when those years the player would be over 40 and unlikely to play anyway.

Third, can Richards handle New York scrutiny. He will expected to be the missing piece for a Cup, or at the very least the missing piece to Gabby’s game.

I have just seen too many players signed for too much money towards the latter years of their careers. He may be better than signing Marcel Dionne or Guy Lafleur, but he at best ending his prime.

That’s my two cents.

by truebluesince75 on Jun 2, 2011 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

On the 2nd point, I wholeheartedly agree that the 90 point version of Richards does not have many years. I also agree that a long term deal is scary as shit.

That said, from 33-35 I don’t see him regressing to, say, 45 points all of a sudden. He’ll likely experience the same decline as many other playmaking centers before him, something like a 15-20% drop off, give or take. That will bring him down to around 70-75. Even if you want to take a more pessimistic view like 60-65 points, it still represents a level of talent we don’t have [yet] from anyone aside from Gaborik. It’s significantly different than signing a 37 year old, as in your two examples.

The entire key to him is the contract.

1. He came back from the concussion to play great hockey for his team in their playoff push. There is never any safe bet with someone he has had a concussion, but as far as I know it is his first concussion-related injury (though I feel that I am almost certainly wrong about that point). He doesn’t play a very physical game, which should help him stay away from contact and more concussion-related injuries.

2. How many good years does he have left? Maybe as many as 5 maybe even 6. We aren’t after him for the good years though, we are after him for the two, three, or four great years he has left in him. The difference between a guy like Richards and a guy like, say… Gomez, is that Richards makes everyone else around him better and that Richards twilight years will see him scoring over 70 points, most of which will be assists.

3. Being the missing piece to a cup team is asking too much of anyone, even Brad Richards. The missing piece to Marian Gaborik’s offense? Brad Richards can do that and much more.

4. As I was writing this comment George was writing his and brought up most of the things I wanted to say. I hate you George.

my response

1. I wont lie and say i have watched Richards play in Dallas ( I already get too much shit from my wife for watching so much Rangers’ hockey) so I dont know his game since his Tampa days, but I am not that keen on a player without a physical game. That type of game is key in the East and to successful players. So that comment scares me a bit.

2. he may have 5-6 good years left but he will want to finish his career here. he may ask for as many as 10 years! he will have much less leverage at 35-37 after his game has deteriorated. this is his first free agency. he will want to be set for life.

3. I hope so. Gabby needs a good center. Prospal has been great but his best years are behind him. dont get me started on freakin Gomez. all I can say is it had a happy ending (ie, McDonaugh) so I will let Sather slide.

anyway, it will keep me interested during the long, hot summer.

by truebluesince75 on Jun 2, 2011 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Truly skilled players don’t need to play a physical game. When was the last time that Henrik Sedin threw a body check? Not many first line centers in the league throw the body, not even Big Joe Thornton takes the body as much as he should. The fact that Brad Richards doesn’t play a physical game shouldn’t scare you off of him because of the fact that he has 70-90+ points in his stick.

We can do little more than speculate about what exactly Brad Richards will or will not want in his contract. If he wants to finish his career here we can get him on a long-term cap-friendly contract. If he wants a shorter term deal, he will be a huge cap hit but we won’t be stuck with him forever. I wouldn’t have said this two or three years ago… but I have faith in Glen Sather to make this work. He’s been on his game.

those are words I never thought would be written here: “I have faith in Glen Sather.” that should go as the site’s heading. here’s hoping you are correct and Sather doesn’t sign Richards for 12 years and $120 million. Sather loves to throw money around. my guess is that he views it as Monopoly money and that he believes its not truly real. sort of like a teenager with his first credit card.

To be objective, Slats maybe had such a great offseason last year because there were no real big targets for him to go crazy with… he certainly does like to buy new toys.

Maybe I don’t have all that much faith… I try to have faith in Sather, but it is hard to overlook the mistakes of the past. His track record recently gives me faith and hope for him making the Richards contract work.

"big targets" is the key

Sather has done well when he’s not tempted, but my analogy of a teenager with his first credit still applies. When Sather see shiny new toys, he is not shy about spending cash. And Richards is pretty shiny, although not shiny new. ok my analogy is wearing thin.

I am all for Richards if:

1. no more than 5 years, throw in a bonus option year
2. no more than $7-8 cap hit per year, he is not worth $10 mil/year
3. can we make his contract incentive laden? say with games played or production? may not be feasible for his age.
4. and please do not include the Do Not Move clause. I know this loophole will be corrected during the next CBA talks but it really puts a team in a horrible position.

so if he isnt signed for 10 years or for 5 years at a cap hit of $10 mil/season, I am ok with this endeavor. I hope you guys are correct about him being concussion free. I am really curious to see how Crosby plays next year. will he shy away from contact? will his production fall? will he be the same player? I still have Lindros fatigue after the Rangers signed that ogre.

Seriously though, why is it so hard for the Rangers to make a clean pass? The puck gets caught up in their skates more than any other team I’ve seen. You’d think they’d learn how to kick the damn thing up to their skates to keep in stride, instead of stopping, spinning, getting hit, and turning the puck over.

It’s frustrating.

Only thing I'm worried about

is that it seems we’re gonna have a lot of cap room and the ‘Gar will have no problem throwing it at Richards. At least he has a good chance of living up to the cash since he’s played with Torts before and he just was making a ton of cash and played very well, so its not like the money will get to his head.

Still, seems like he’d be a top priority for us and a hell of a signing. One top line guy like Richards will go a long way with allowing guys like Callahan and Duby to not worry about carrying the offense so much, or at least attempting to. It has as good a chance as any of reinvigorating Gaborik as well.

So, as a maybe not-so-objective fan of the game, in order to sign Richards to what will most likely be a $7.5M + contract, who gets bought out or dismissed to the Minors;
Chris Drury $7M
Wojtek Wolski $.38M
Sean Avery $1.937M

nope, Wolski’s buyout is a “gift from the CBA Gods.” Between him and Drury that’s $7M of valuable cap space for our new boy Brad. not to mention Wolski is a talented (soft) stiff.

Not only that, but buying out Avery isn’t split with Dallas (like his salary and cap hit are).

Remember he will be trying to negotiate around the 35+ clause. I doubt he wants the contract to end right when he hits 35. Most likely he would want to eat up some of those over 35 years. Either that or take a semi-short term and try again for a home run contract but I highly doubt that.

This is really his last big payday contract. Only good thing is he has been getting paid big bucks so might not be that motivated to strike it rich…but then again its a lot of money.

I agree. Richards is either going to sign a 3 year deal for close to $10M per season or sign something for a much smaller cap hit and a lot more years (think 5-7 years).

Why would Richards sign a 3 year deal? It makes him a UFA one more time before he falls into the dreaded 35+ category.

Obviously, I have to move on," Richards said. "I had fun in Dallas, and I like the city. But the [ownership] situation is unclear, so I really didn’t have a chance to stay there. I will move on and look forward to the opportunity to [be] a free agent. I’ve never had that chance in my career. It’s a real big moment in my life to say the least.
It would be great to try and help Dallas out if something was reasonable and made sense for both sides," said Richards. "But we’ll see what happens. You never know what will happen. I think my mindset right now is to see how many options I have.

I don’t know which to reply to so I’ll just put it here.

An important thing to remember with the whole Richards deal is that anything longer than 3 years means Richards is a 35+ guy when the contract expires. Now, lord knows what the next CBA will bring, but you can bet that the 35+ rule will stay in place. So he stands to do better by either:

a) SIgning only for 3 years and getting one last negotiation in before he turns 35
b) Signing a “Kiprusoff” deal (I think that’s who started that crap) and going for the retirement contract now.

If he’s smart, he’s considering all this. Thus, a 5 year deal is probably the worst thing he can do.

This benefits the Rangers in that a shorter term deal means they can [potentially] avoid paying him too much for not enough production at ages 35-36. The downside is that a shorter term deal may result in a higher cap hit, such as a 3/25 type deal.

If any of you follow Rumor Central on ESPN.com, there’s a report from Tampa that the Lightning have interest in bringing him back, if Richards hits the market on 7/1.
I get the feeling that if he gets to free agency, he’s more likely to go there. And with Stamkos looking at $8.5 million, we may something else emerge…just a thought.

Jason Spezza

I’d rather take my chances with obtaining him. He turns 28 on the 13th of this month, so he’s a few years younger, and he only has 4 years left on his deal. Which would be the max amount of years I want to offer Richards.

Not sure what it would take to acquire him.

If they don’t sign Richards, Spezza would likely be an explorable option. It would likely cost nearly the same as what the rumored Stastny deals would cost.

Richards to sign with an NHL team no earlier than July 1 (e9001)

There’s a reason none of us will give his site hits, the guy is trash. He may break a trade or two, but even a blind quadriplegic monkey can hit a bulls-eye if he tosses enough darts. And Hacklund isn’t taking precision aim, he’s spreading buckshot all over the damn place playing spray-and-pray.

i see

that Ranger fans have still learned nothing.

Still counting on other teams players to win games.

Jagr??? really? he’s almost 40

Richards will be yet another overpaid waste in New York. I hope he goes to Toronto.
