Rangers Analysis: Rangers Will Have Options At 15
Tomorrow marks the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, probably my favorite day of the hockey year.
Clark did not rule out making a trade to acquire some extra picks, particularly in the second round, if when it comes time to pick at No. 15 there's not one of their main targets left on the board. Unlike last year, when the Rangers went into the draft knowing they wanted to take bruising defenseman Dylan McIlrath at No. 10, Clark said they had "no real plan like that" but, if all things were equal, he's probably leaning toward taking a forward.
It's not surprising at all that the Rangers aren't going in with a concrete plan. This is one of the most unpredictable drafts I can remember. On one hand a top-10 talent might fall to the Rangers at 15, on the other hand the Rangers might not like what they see at 15 and trade down to get a pick in the second round to add to a later first round pick.
If guys like Joel Armia, Mark McNeill, Sven Bartschi or any of the other high end talent we have reviewed here on the Banter are available, expect the Rangers to nab them with the 15th pick. But if Glen Sather and Clark don't like what they see when it's their turn to pick it would be smart to trade down, especially since there will be some talent to be had in the second round.
Join me after the jump for more.
Although it might not seem like it, the Rangers already made their first pick of the 2011 NHL Entry draft by acquiring Tim Erixon. Clark talked to Gross about Erixon and where he thinks he would have fallen if he had re-entered the draft:
Clark said just because the Rangers acquired Tim Erixon from the Flames - Clark pronected that Erixon, had he gone back into this year's draft because Calgary was unable to sign him, would have been selected around eighth or ninth overall - does not preclude the Rangers from drafting another defenseman. Clark compared defenseman to pitchers in baseball, as in, you never have enough. But it was more than wanting to draft a defenseman last year. Clark said the Rangers specifically targeted McIlrath because of his physical play, which Clark thought the organization was lacking. As far as drafting an impact player, Clark believes Erixon fits that description.
I went into detail on how Erixon would be impacting the Rangers after the trade, and it's easy to forget the Rangers already acquired a top-10 talent who could have been part of this draft pool.
Clark also told Gross the Rangers might also take a goaltender in the draft.
As far as goalies, Clark said he feels the same way as he does about defenseman, you can never have a glut. Obviously, the Rangers are set with Henrik Lundqvist and Marty Biron as his backup. Chad Johnson and Cam Talbot should have split last season in Connecticut and the organization is very high on Scott Stajcer, a fifth-round pick in 2009 who has been signed to a pro contract. Clark is also keen to re-sign 6-foot-8 Jason Missiaen, who the Rangers initially signed out of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in March. Still, Clark could see using one of the Rangers' picks on a goalie this weekend.
In the end, it's going to be a very fun and interesting draft.
Thoughts on all this guys?

I think at this stage Armia’s the kid I want, but I’d be ok with trading down and nabbing Jensen or Puempel. I know Biggs is probably the most Clark-like player, but I don’t think this is the draft to grab that type player. It’s so crapshooty, I don’t want a ‘safe’ pick like him or Jenner.
My biggest fear is that all the forwards go and it’s a never-ending string of defensemen left.

Puempel, please.
Matt Puempel has a frame on him and two 1+ ppg seasons on a Peterbourough team team that has been in the basement of the Eastern Conference in the OHL the past two seasons – imagine what he could do if he had help.

side question...
I have to go to a wedding tomorrow night that starts a 7pm. I will have my phone on me.
I think you can guess where this is going… in typical guy fashion, I’m looking for a good app or website that will have the draft picks in real time.
Anyone have any suggestions? Should I just keep refreshing the NHL site? Will the Banter have all the picks or just the Rangers?
As for me, I’m hooping the Rangers get Armia, McNeil or Namestnikov. Couturier too but I don’t expect he will be there at 15.
We’ll have an open thread going, and I’m sure all the picks will be posted in the thread

the funny part on the 2010 draft
the morning after i was at chelsea piers for a golf lesson and, after it was over, i was hanging out around the rink, reading the banter post-draft wrap up on my phone, still steaming over the pick and expecting jessiman part deux, and someone (i think it was george) had this long post about how people are overreacting, this is an organizational need, this kid is no jessiman, etc, which kind of calmed me down a bit

ah, research
okay, just to summarize….in june of 2010, after the mcilrath selection, most posters here went initially apeshit batshit fucking nuts slightly crazy
in the light of day some people backpedaled and after thinking it over didn’t hate the pick; others still raged against it considering fowler & gormley were on the board, and some of us are just hoping it’s still not jessiman part two (that’d be me)
additionally, in looking at the defensive prospects and measuring up how this impacted the system, some posters here were advocates of dumping one michael sauer, and many of those guys are now his biggest fans

Well that’s no fun.
If they pick a Dman, I may find my neighbors cat and throw it in my microwave just to get the true visual of what Kovalev and Tortorella would be like together.
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
Actually, I just read the thread from last year. Poe678 liked Skinner. The thread is hilarious, especially when the Isles take Nino and when Dylan is picked. It was the slow momentum of Fowler falling in our laps and then WHO?! A fighter? lol The dissapointment was bad, but look, I’m an adult and, a year later, I’m almost totally over it, and looking forward to McWrath taking a load off Prust’s pugilistic duties.
Yeah, my biggest issue at the time was that McIlrath was completely off the radar, and the draft coverage did nothing but mention his fighting over and over again. Nothing about his skill, nothing about his shot, no offensive highlights. Just him beating the crap out of people.
It was infuriating, especially when he was an unknown and Fowler was there otherwise.

I wanted Skinner in the worst way. When the Rangers picked McIlrath I went ballistic. And then when I stopped being an ignorant fan and did the research then I was very happy. Let us not forget that Fowler was a -21 in his first year with all the accolades he’s getting. MDZ got those accolades the 1st year as well while he was a -20, so… Point is, let’s not compare Fowler and McIlrath just yet. I think Gordie made the right move.
I still think the McIlrath pick was a mistake. You read all of these GM interviews, and they all say that you take the best player available, and don’t draft for need when you’re high in the first round. The Rangers did the opposite.
I do have a greater appreciation for McIlrath, though and realize that other teams did have him rated higher than we all had realized at the time… about a month ago I watched this special on TSN documenting the Oilers and their path two the first round pick. I think it was their player personnel guy who said that there were 7 players worth trading up for, and they were: Hall, Seguin, Gudbranson, Johansen, Fowler, McIlrath, and Campbell.
ARMIA, Scheifele, and Puempel in that order. Armia is my “Skinner” choice for this draft although a year or two away.
Considering Gordie Clark knew EXACTLY who he wanted going into last years draft, yet no one knew outside the draft group . . .
I’d expect he has a high target or two in this draft and saying “DMAN or Goalie is not out of the question” is just subterfuge. Or perhaps saying they don’t really care about the first pick at 15 is just driving up the price to potential suitors?
Let me know how that works out for you . . .
Another angle on Clarks statements.
Considering this draft is thick in forwards, proposing the Rangers will take a Dman or goalie makes those with second round picks think long and hard about taking the best talent over organization needs.
For example, since Edmonton and others need D – do they take the best talent available (at forward) and risk having their second round D target scapped up by the Blueshirts?
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

If we draft a defenseman...
would my excitement be misguided?
I know no one is totally crazy about any of the forwards that we think will be available at 15, so if we pick a defenseman I would assume that a major trade would be in the pipeline. Essentially, drafting one of the top defense prospects at 15 will be the only way we will bring aboard a true, elite, NHL ready forward without giving up any essential assets. Am I off base?
If Beaulieu fell, then maybe. Guys like Siemens, Olekiask, Morrow…I don’t see them giving us that much more leverage in terms of flipping our prospects.

I didn’t want to post the draft but the more I looked at it, the more I had to post it. All 20 of those guys are solid NHL’ers. Unreal. Jessiman? But I digress.
I read that the Rangers passed on Bossy TWICE in that draft. TWICE!!!!
On a real draft note though, Big Solid Forward. That is a need and there will be a few available. Skinner still stings though..
You look at two rookies who have shinned this past year, Skinner and Grabner, and what do they have in common? Crazy Speed. That’s why I think Grimaldi would not be a bad pick.
You could trade down a bit and still get him, so you can get a draft pick out of it. Then you trade Thomas or Bourque with a surplus Dman and you have the start of a good package for your elite player.
