Philadelphia trades Jeff Carter to Columbus...then trades Captain Mike Richards to LA

Well people have been saying that the Flyers would have to shed contracts to sign Bryzgalov and boy did they.

It all started with Jeff Carter going to Columbus for Jakob Voracek, the number 8 pick and a 3rd rounder in tomorrow's draft. After the Flyers dropped that bombshell twitter exploded and about 20 minutes later reports came in that the Flyers traded their captain (and long time Dubinsky punching bag) Mike Richards to Los Angeles for top flight prospect Bradyen Schenn and Wayne Simmons. There you go Ilya, have fun with that offense in front of you

More details to follow

So here's how it all went down:

1) the Flyers' trade Jeff Carter to Columbus for Voracek, tomorrow's 1st and tomorrow's 3rd

2) Rumors start going around about Kris Versteeg to the Panthers, which turn out to be false (Damn you Steve Levy)

3) TSN and twitter starts talking about an unconfirmed trade between LA and Philly that would include Mike Richards

4) Everything hits the fan, TSN begins confirming that Mike Richards will be dealt to LA for Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmons (Twitter erupts, heads explode)

5) TSN confirms that the Flyers have received a second round pick from LA as well

Damn...that was an incredible hour and half of trading by the Flyers, you don't see that too often

The Flyers want a new team. That’s what I see coming out of this. Although I honestly don’t see how this will work. And all for a goalie? It doesn’t make sense to me.

by Original 6 on Jun 23, 2011 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

A goalie they've needed for a decade...

Honestly, as much as they may take a step back offensively, this was a good deal for all 3 teams in the long run.

by Rob L on Jun 23, 2011 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

That is True

I was honestly expecting the Flyers to draft another goalie in the draft. I didn’t see this coming though.

No idea about next year,

but the Flyers got some nice future prospects. Giroux, JVR, Shenn, Voracek, Simmons. Do they have any you D though?

by NTB on Jun 23, 2011 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

Not really as far as I know. I guess you can assume they will draft D with the 10th and push a forward closer to us.

They have a very intimidating stable of young players. I don’t really think we’ll be whimpering but I am talking off the cuff in here, treating it like an open thread.

Guys like Schenn and JVR are going to be downright nasty, not to mention the top ten pick they are getting this year. What I am really trying to say is that we should enjoy the laughs now because we won’t be able to laugh a few years from now when things probably pan out for the orange goons.

I said it somewhere, they will be competing with the Islanders and other young teams in 5 years, and still be a playoff team in the meantime.

Look at their 23 and under year olds
Schenn
Voracek
Giroux
Van Reimsdyk

And all except for Schenn have actually produced. The Rangers can’t compete with that.

Their owner is getting them a new stadium.

Their goaltending blows, but they will score.

They can go out and buy a goalie at some point like Philly just did to get over the hump. Or they can trade for one. There’s always some team with two young goalies that will need to make a decision… like Montreal last year, and like LA now.

by NTB on Jun 23, 2011 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Understandable. I just think a guy like Schenn is much more exciting and has much more potential than Stepan does. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Stepan and a lot of the Rangers prospects (Thomas, Kreider, etc.) but there is no denying that the Flyers now have added a lot to their future.

Voracek is 21 and already has 3 years of NHL experience. Simmonds is 22 and has three years of experience.

They just added a lot of exciting young players.

listening to morganti discuss this on WIP

- flyers were actively trying to frame a deal with bryz prior to getting to minnesota

- once they set up and started taking calls it was let’s make a deal time, and they got two ‘godfather’ offers they couldn’t refuse, knowing what bryz wanted

- schenn is an ‘automatic’ #2 center, huge upside, better ceiling than richards and carter

- they want a slam dunk player with the #8 pick

- the real move isn’t for 11-12, they have a lot of space opening up going into 12-13

- doesn’t see a spot for richards or any way to fit him in

the fan outcry for guys like malhotra & lundmark to get ice time considering neil smith was promising the youth movement was underway….

….hold on, i need to go have a screaming fit….

….ok, to resume….

…so anyway, lundmark gets a spot on the team, for whatever reason, and this was into messier’s second tour of duty, when he was a shell of the player he had been, wasn’t backchecking, clearly not hustling like he had been, for either reasons of age, erosion of skill, or both, and one night, lundmark scores a goal, about ten minutes after a messier giveaway and lack of backcheck led to a goal by the opposing team, and jd shouts “well, there, see, jamie’s got to earn his ice time”

not a word about messier’s giveaway or his lah-dee-dah effort getting back to the play, but clearly a young guy needed to earn his time on the ice

i remember being a regular on the old ny times rangers message board and the place just absolutely flipped out the next day in a rage over what was clear evidence of jd being so biased he had to go

by Hoggo on Jun 23, 2011 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

The length of Bryz’ contract is a bit long…otherwise it’s hard to argue with these moves by the Flyers, I agree—they gave up a ton of talent but they got a justifiably solid return. Simmonds will fit right in for them, he’s defensively responsible and physical and should do well in the division. Schenn is going to be a player, Voracek is a nice player too. All 3 guys have size as well. Pronger is obviously their captain now also.

It will be interesting to see Mike Richards in LA. Good place for him to end up, and the prospect of Carter and Nash on the same line makes Columbus a much better team right away.

Prole art threat.
