2011 NHL Draft: New York Rangers Select JT MIller In The 2011 NHL Draft
The New York Rangers selected J.T. Miller with their first round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft.
Here is a brief profile on Miller from College Hockey Blog:
JT Miller has been one of the NTDP’s most dependable players this year, putting up 15 goals and 50 points in 56 games. A lot of his point totals may be inflated by getting to play with the more dynamic Rocco Grimaldi, but at the most recent U-18 worlds it was Miller who led the United States, who won gold, in scoring.
Miller’s offensive game isn’t very refined. He prefers a north-south power game vs. the shiftier moves that Grimaldi prefers. He doesn’t have the best hands, though he is an adequate stick handler and has games where he is much better than others. He also doesn’t finish terribly well. Ideally I think his best offensive spot at North Dakota next year will be planting himself in front of the net and causing problems, like he did when the NTDP played at UND this past winter.

I would rather have had Armia or Grimaldi. Like last years pick, this came out of nowhere for us.

Someone posted a scouting report of Biggs, and it was the worst thing I’ve read about any athlete at any level. It was as though the guy had a personal grudge against Biggs. Needless to say, picking Biggs at 15 would have been just as big as a mistake.
What is with the Rangers, it’s as though they’re deliberately bucking the “best player available” system
It was Cory Pronman’s scouting report. He did not think too highly of him.

Why would anyone expect different?
Gordie goes by his own resources and not the"experts" I have faith in his plan, perhaps drafting a project-type player also illustrates his faith in the organizations developing skills? Yeah, what does that even mean? Under Tortorella, Fowler would have suffered the same fate as Del Zotto. Plus, Fowler played with arguably the best first line in the NHL, the leading scorer amongst (yeah, “amongst”) defenseman, and Selanne, who’s a fucking machine.
Maybe he meant McWrath vs. Fowler
I’m still not convinced that was a good decision. Indeed, after last season I think that decision looks even worse than it did at the time.
He was referring to the fact that MDZ and Fowler were from two different years. It was Fowler/McIlrath if anything

Also, Rocco Grimaldi is still on the board.
Any chance we’re trying to get an early second rounder to reunite the duo???
If you want that duo, you take Grimaldi first
I wouldn’t say Grimaldi is a homerun, but the upside is bigger then alot of these guys if he can keep from getting his head taken off. The kid works hard, is in great shape, competitive, and his moves are UNREAL.

Sorry but this was a bad choice! Should have traded up for someone with some talent! I have a funny feeling that the Rangers off season is going to be a huge fail!!! Please don’t get Richards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s a fail on multiple levels and no Spezza either!!!!!! Seems like a waste of time and money!!!! I don’t want another lack luster year!!!
you know how a lot of people thought last season was going to be a huge fail?
how is next year going to be a fail? in fact, i think we can only get better especially if we get Richards.
one draft pick, that wouldn’t have impacted next years team anyways, isn’t going to turn the season to a fail.

Yes, It just looks like trouble! I’m not hating on the ideas they had! But they should trade out a defenseman in the farm league for another first round pick. We have so many young D players the WE have options. I would like to see a bid on Ryder this of season!
We need real leaders on this team someone taking control of the mislead team!
Lets complain about the pick when we actually don’t know shit.. This isn’t the NFL or NBA, for the most part, we don’t get to see these guys play. The team scouts these players and watches them all season. They come up with the player they feel best fits the team. I don’t understand the idiots calling these a “fail” or “another Hugh Jessiman”.. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure most Rangers fans wanted Jessiman.. Rangers have been doing a solid job with almost everything lately so relax and we’ll see in a few years how this plays out..

Much like people freaking out over McIlrath and some slowly warming up to him.
I had an emotional response because I had my heart set on Armia (or Mcneil) but I am already warming up to this pick. No one should overreact and call this a failure of any kind. We have to be patient and trust in the scouts that have done a pretty good job as of late.
Would have been nice to have Armia, but the more I hear about Miller the more I like him.
@DigDeepNYR

Bad pick
The reason it’s a bad pick is becuase guys like Joel Armia and Mark McNeil were still on the board. I’m not saying that this guy will suck, because like you said we dont know about him. But come on Joel Armia is a potential star with great offensive ability and is pure offense. Which is what Rangers need. McNeil is similar to Miller, but scouts say he could make an NHL team next year, if you need a reference to that go check out Bob McKenzie on TSN. There were better picks availible in my opinion.
But how do you know that?? These guys scout the players all year (And years prior) and obviously wanted Miller over anyone else (Who was available).. Our team has done a solid job of late so instead of jumping all over them when in fact we really don’t know makes absolutely no sense. Bob is great but he does a lot more then just scouting players. We have people who are dedicated to that and they obviously thought this was the best pick for the Rangers..

Right but 6 out of 10 scouts interviewed before the draft picked Miller over McNeil. If you take a look at the best players that have come out of our system and what number they were drafted at, you need to have a bit more faith in Clark as a judge of talent. You should certainly assume that his judgement is better than yours.
Just frustrating. By no means am I writing this kid off but he’s a long way away from being an impact NHL player. I was ok with the pick til I read he was ranked 59th overall by THN. I dont hate it but I certainly dont like it. Wouldve prefferred Armia or McNeil…we cant have enough Mc’s on our team. in 05-06 we were essentially Team Czech Rep. so I was hoping we could become Team Micks in the near future w/ all our irish players

The player comparison remains.
Would love to have a guy that is similar to Lucic. Big, powerful, nose for the net. Sticks up for his teammates, all kinds of leadership potential. Guys like Lucic will work their asses off for you. Will chip in on the offense when you need it, otherwise they are absolutely dynamic at creating space for the other 4 men on the ice.

Miller just isn’t sure which position he’ll eventually play. He’s been used at all three forward spots, though mainly as a right wing later last season and Miller, a left-handed shot, said he prefers playing right wing to left because he wants to play on his off-side.

He was just a reach, and doesn’t fill any need.
I think it was worth the risk to draft Armia at 15, and see how he develops. As he seems to have the better skill set, and might become that 30-40 goal scorer we need in 3-5 years.

“Players with a Ryan Kesler type skill set isn’t what we need”
That’s funny. When Miller nets his 40th goal of the 2016 season ill believe it.
I see a poor man’s Dubi with the pick, but I’m just being realistic. Again, if he becomes a 40 goal scorer, I’m wrong. I guess only time will tell.
by MyMarriageIsVeryMessier on Jun 25, 2011 11:56 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
since when was Kesler viewed as a 40 goal scorer?
for his whole career until he broke out this one, he’s a mid 20s scorer and mainly a 2-way forward and excellent penalty killer. This year’s most likely an aberration.
So if Miller’s a great 2-way forward that scoring over 20 goals a year….that’s a Kesler skillset. If he has an incredible, really unexpected year…even better.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
by Rorschach44 on Jun 25, 2011 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions
He might not even be a center, as he prefers to play the right wing.
AA, Dubi, Calli are all two way forwards who can put up 50-60 point seasons. Krieder might be another. Again, define need. I think that’s what’s missing in the conversation.
And I understand AA isn’t quite there yet, but neither is Miller. We’re basing this all on potential. Hell Boyle might even become a 50 point player, we needed a guy who has the potential to become a true front line player, and yes you can find them at the 15th pick.
If Miller really is a 50 point, 2 way forward, than its just like I said, Dubi 2.0. Nice player, but didn’t fill a need.
by MyMarriageIsVeryMessier on Jun 25, 2011 12:54 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
To me, unless all 9 of your top 3 line forwards are two way guys
you don’t have enough. So, he fills a need. Also, he’s 18…so in 4 years time the roster could look completely different and he’ll still be extremely young.
Also, you gotta factor in the fact they don’t feel that anyone else on the board fills a need nor do they have the skill to be a first line guy.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

“To me, unless all 9…”
This is where we differ, I believe in more of a balanced attack. You need pure goal scorers, you need two way guys, you need playmakers etc.
We really have a lack of pure goal scorers throughout the organization. And while I think Miller is a nice player, he doesn’t fill our most glaring need.
Its ok that we feel differently about the pick, and once again, only time will tell. I hope I’m wrong, but I have a feeling we missed out on a few other players that will eventually become pretty good at putting the puck in the back of the net.

Love this on his profile (on Ranger official website):
FAVORITES
NHL team: Pittsburgh Penguins
NHL player: Pittsburgh’s Deryk Engelland
Sounds like a born Ranger to me!
better engelland being his favorite player than crosby

Miller on Blueshirts United
I’m not going to lie, I was a little bit shocked. I had one meeting with (the Rangers) so I wasn’t really expecting this. But hearing my name called was the best feeling in the world. I thought (the Rangers) liked me, but other teams had shown more interest it seemed. So it was a bit of a shock, breathtaking really. The best feeling.
I think I’m a pretty competitive kid. I always am willing to compete and I am always hard to play against. And I had a good post-season tournament in Germany, and I think that really helped to push me over the top.
I followed the Penguins (growing up in Pittsburgh), but I am looking forward to bringing my family to (New York City). When the Pens won the Cup a few years back that was pretty emotional for me. But I am a Ranger now. I wear the Rangers jersey!

Falling in love with the pick
I’ll have way more analysis Monday but for now, in Gordie we trust guys. The man knows what he is doing, but this is a good pick. This kid is a good talent. Relax, just because you haven’t heard of him doesn’t mean it’s a bad pick.

bright side is
It wasnt Jonas Brodin. Bet the wild fans are crying themselves to sleep
Everyone complaining that we didn’t pick an “impact player” needs to calm down. We can all agree that outside of the top 4-5 picks, everyone else is a crapshoot. We have talked about the fact that we do not have homegrown “elite” first line talent because we have never dropped low enough for a top 5 pick. So… 14 other teams before us did not think that Armia or McNeill were impact players. You will say, well the other 14 players were better – well then, we aren’t talking about “elite” top 5 picks then. You can’t say with any certainty that those two will succeed someday as first liners on a winning team and more than you can say that Miller can’t be a great 2nd line center on a winning team.
Have a little faith in Gordie, he is great at what he does.
The top 5 picks arent the only elite talent in a draft...
Look at last year’s draft, Fowler and Skinner were two of the top rookies (and they just got drafted, very quick impact), but they weren’t in the top 5.
Oh damn, there’s that Fowler guy again.
I feel the same way I did last year, yeah McIlrath is a nice player, but I wish we didn’t pass up Fowler.
For all those who love the pick, good for you. I respect that. But my opinion stays the same, there were better prospects to be had.

and
I’m sure Clarkson sees something special about the kid (Miller). Let him mature
Write up on Rotoworld
Miller has the size, ability and speed to be a successful forward in the NHL. His skating is above average and he is a very tenacious player who does everything in his power to get the puck to the opponent’s net. Miller has strong offensive instincts and is a playmaker as well as a shooter. What sets Miller apart from other scoring prospects is his advanced defensive game. He is one of the most accomplished two-way forwards in this year’s draft.
look I don’t know much about these prospects, I trust what more knowledgeable people have to say, but from what I saw, Armeia was THE raw talent prospect that we needed
So why did we pass him up??
I’ve been out and about tonight so I literally just found out who we picked. I’m not hating on Miller at all. There’s never anything wrong with acquiring a solid 2 way forward. I just had the impression that we were shooting for more of a raw scoring talent type pick.
Regardless, I trust our management and I strongly say:
Let’s Go Rangers, and JT Miller, welcome to the family. I hope you enjoy a wonderful career with us, nothing but the best sir.
Also would like to give a shoutout to the Banter writers for doing such a great job in covering potential draft picks and the draft as a whole. Thanks guys, BSB yet again shows why it is THE site for Ranger fans on the web.
Hope we continue to build in the coming days. Believe in the future baby.
I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

When the Rangers picked Miller I thought, who? I really did not have him on my list and I expected them to take McNeill. But it seems like Miller is a good pick and I haven’t watched any of those players play so I have to trust in the Ranger’s scouts.
We’ll see in a few years if it was the right pick.
i think i have come to the conclusion...
that perhaps this pick wouldnt have been made out to suck so much if BSB had done a preview on him….
it really seems as though everyone (mostly everyone) would have probably accepted a pick of any of the people previewed here…i mean there were plenty of guys not mentioned on the site that got picked yesterday.

SAME AS LAST YEAR AND THE YEAR BEFORE.
I guess well find out in a few years and until then we have to put our faith in Clark and Co.
If this was the Rangers guy, and they knew they wanted him, fine. I don’t blame them for taking him. HOWEVER, if they wanted him so badly over McNeil, Namestikinov, Grimaldi, Armia, etc. why didn’t they trade down a few spots?
They way I’m looking at it, we could have traded down at least 5 spots and still got one of the guys listed above, while picking up a 2nd rounder. That’s why the pick upset me.
Lets hope for the best. LETS GO RANGERS!
