Rangers News: Drury Leaning Towards A Buyout?

After all of the insanity during and following the NHL draft, it's fitting that more news breaks right after it. If you're still annoyed with the J.T. Miller selection (you shouldn't be at all, mind you) please read my recap on why he was a great selection.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. According to a report from Larry Brooks, Chris Drury is now leaning towards accepting being bought out.

From the Brooks article:

For after Drury suggested a week ago that he was going to apply for a designation of being medically unable to play next season because of a degenerative condition in his left knee, the captain is now leaning toward accepting a buyout, according to individuals familiar with the situation.

The deadline for buyouts is Thursday, but procedure dictates a player must be placed on, and go through, unconditional waivers after official notification of the intent to buy out. The Rangers would have to place Drury on waivers no later than Tuesday in order to comply with procedures.

If Drury does indeed accept the buyout rather than file for the medical exception, the Rangers would carry approximately $3.717 million of dead cap space on his deal through the summer and next season, a saving of approximately $3.333 million. The club also would face a charge of approximately $1.667 million for 2012-13, pending a new CBA that could erase that obligation.

This news can't get much better for the New York Rangers, if it turns out to be true. Removing Drury from the off-season cap would go a long way in helping the Rangers get Artem Anisimov, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Brian Boyle and Mike Sauer (all of whom were qualified yesterday) under contract.

It would also go a long way into helping the Rangers either acquire a top center via free agency (Brad Richards) or look towards trading for a top center (at this point, who knows).

Not much more analysis needed here guys. Thoughts on all this?

Thank you in advance, Chris :)

Even if Chris IS hurt, I would hope he’d still accept a buyout. That would once again show him to be the true example of class.

BTW, went to his Fairfield pizza place recently and was VERY disappointed. They have nada other than pizza. That’s it! No apps, no salads, no pasta, no chix marsala – just pizza! What’s up with that, Chris?! Sadly, I didn’t really care for it. Not much sauce to speak of. The place itself was real nice, but considering how huge it is and not really crowded when I was there, I’m not so sure how it’s gonna stay in business in this economy. Anyway, got to see his Fairfield Prep jersey and other cool memorabilia on the wall, so that was neato :)

good to know i might have went there one day if I happened to be in the area just to see what that hot oil is all about lol

it will stay in business….cuz Drury is rich…and if they’re only making pizza….its cant be overly expensive…….but yeah….sounds kind of weak.

I haven’t posted in a while… I’m still here every day… Just from my Android so I don’t post….

I hope they can buy out Drury and would love to see him go.

I have to comment on the Pizza… The original Colony Pizza in Stamford was well liked by many… mostly for the hot oil Pizza. Chris’s Colony in Fairfield is the same.

I am a huge fan… The crust is very thin even compared to NY or New Haven thin crust pizza. There isn’t much sauce and there is only one size (bar size). The place is very nice inside with a great bar and good beer selections. Hot oil or Zinger (hot oil and peppers) is the way to go. There is nothing else but pizza on the menu.

If you want to try a unique and truly delicious pizza and aren’t afraid of some heat GO!

I woke up to this news with a Rangers blog alert just now and thought I was having a wet dream…dude man adding his thoughts also said at the end of the story “anyone who thinks Brad Richards isn’t coming now is out of their mind” well if it all pans out with a contract within reason and this all comes true ill be one happy camper…I WANT THAT RICHARD

Oh and there was another article about a lot of teams acquiring about Anisimov..which the Rangers have all turned away…very good news for me all around

Question about how buyouts work..

On a cash basis, does Drury get the same amount from a buyout versus being on the actual roster for the 1 year remaining. I know from a salary cap perspective it lowers the hit this year and pushes some dead space to next year. But on an actual cash basis of money paid to Drury, does he get a reduced amount from his 2011-2012 salary of 7MM?

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jun 26, 2011 10:17 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think he get’s half of his salary and not the whole 7+ mil

Ok. If he was going to threaten the Rangers with injury claim to prevent buyout and collect the difference, that’s where I’d have a problem. In my mind, it would be a very “un-Chris Drury” type of thing to do. Any other player I’d understand, but he has something of a legacy. He’s a prideful guy and probably feels that he’s disappointed here in NY. Can’t see him flipping the fans the bird on his way out. I’m sure in the background the Rangers will negotiate personal appearance contract to bridge the gap.

This whole situation reminds me of what a class act Markus Naslund was/is.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jun 26, 2011 10:58 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

His 2011-12 salary would be $5m. A buyout, per capgeek, gets him $3.3m of it.

Not that any of us are Chris (whoops, had to correct a “Christ” Sunday morning typo!) Drury specialists, but I’m wondering: why the sudden change in heart? Or was there a change of heart — was this the option he was leaning towards after all.

All in all, I just really don’t have it in me to be ticked at Drury, no matter what he chooses. Drury wasn’t holding a gun to Slats’ head during the negotiation process, and Slats was no more of a pod person when he signed the contract than he usually is.

The Boogaard stuff makes me wonder about Drury’s captaincy, but…I’m not exactly sure what role a captain is supposed to play off the ice. (If anyone would like to hop in and explain, I’d greatly appreciate it. :) )

I am curious about what impact, if any, Drury made on developing Cally into Captain material. Oh yes, and congrats to Cally on his wedding.

I think this might have been a negotiating ploy by Drury’s agent to get some of the money he’d be losing in a buyout. It is a business and if Drury doesn’t intend to sign elsewhere you might as well try to grab every dollar (within reason).

There’s no telling what the cap will be next year, for all we know, it will go down by the amount Drury would come off.

in this economy I wouldn’t be surprised. New CBA next year who knows.
Anything on what Redden intends to do?

by Kmp on Jun 26, 2011 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Is it true that a player can void his contract? If so, how does it work? Would he have to sit out a year or something like that?

by Hoggo on Jun 26, 2011 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I remember reading that he was considering voiding his contract to get back in the NHL, but that is speculation. Don’t know if its allowed in the CBA, but if both parties agree I can’t see why not.

by Kmp on Jun 26, 2011 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I read an article on TSN and it was talking about how the salary cap is increasing which could entice some teams to take on bad contracts because the player isn’t completely worthless and they need to reach the cap floor anyway so why not. (Think Campbell to Florida this past weekend) Of the players mentioned that could be a possible target was Redden. Maybe we can find a suitor for him, so he can get back in the NHL and we can get rid of his contract on the summer cap. I don’t know though, just wishful thinking I guess.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jun 26, 2011 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah thats really wishful thinking…I think I’d play a hundred dollars worth of lottery that day if that ever happened..

by Mr. Avery to you on Jun 26, 2011 7:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It won’t happen immediately, but as it gets closer to the season, you may get some teams get interested.

For instance, Florida, even after Campbell, is still close to $26m away from the cap floor. They need a goalie, 1-2 defensemen, and at least 7 forwards to sign. That’s a minimum of 9, maximum of 12 players still needed, so almost $3m per player on the bottom end, and $2.16m per player for the top end.

It’s serious wishful thinking for June 26. But August 26th? We’ll see.

They’re going to have to sign backloaded deals, or acquire people whose cap hits are greater than their salary.

I think a lot of them are going to go bankrupt. I guess guys like Jussi Jokinen and Brooks Laich are going to get 5+ mil a year now.

there is some speculation they could overpay Stamkos by giving him say 11 million for 1 year.

by Kmp on Jun 27, 2011 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

wouldn’t Drury be attractive to the Avs, who are a long way from the floor as well.

by Kmp on Jun 27, 2011 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

No voiding of contracts to play in the NHL.
It can be voided if the player chooses to go overseas – he’d effectively be a “no-show” and in default.
Or a team can ‘loan’ a player to a foreign league, and while I don’t know the details I believe they can work out an arrangement where the salary is paid by that foreign club, and can be reduced from the NHL contract level ( again – not positive about this – but I believe this is what happened a couple years ago with WAS and Nylander ).
The SPC is effectively a binding contract between a player and all member clubs of the NHL. The only ways a player changes clubs are:
trade
waivers (full salary)
re-entry waivers (clubs split salary 50-50)
buyout

It’s possible there could be a compliance buyout in the next CBA like there was in 2004/5 – but it’s not a sure thing.

One thing I have to say

I don’t think Chris Drury owes it to the Rangers to let them buy him out, but if I was in his shoes I would definitely do it. No, I don’t think I’m the nicest person in the world or whatever, but I like to think I’m equal to my contract. (Note, I’m not being paid to write for Pinstripe Alley) If I knew I was hurting the team, and they didn’t want me, and they were trying to get rid of me, and they had a better captain candidate, I wouldn’t stick around for the extra money. That’s just me, and I can’t even completely guarantee that’s true. I definitely do NOT think keeping the money is such a terrible thing. According to the contract the Rangers gave him he should be given the money, so he has every right to take the money.
