NY Rangers Release Prospect Development Camp Roster
The New York Rangers prospect development camp for 2011 will be held this week, from June 27th through July 1st, at the Madison Square Garden Training Center. The Rangers released the roster tonight, which includes top prospects Christian Thomas, Tim Erixon, and Dylan McIlrath. The roster also includes every pick from the just drafted 2011 class, highlighted by first rounder Jonathan Miller. You can read more about some of the highly touted prospects on the Rangers website.
The one name not on the list is Chris Kreider. As you may recall from last year, in a similar situation to Kreider, Ryan McDonagh was committed to staying in college, but shortly after attending this camp, he signed his entry-level contract. There will be no such situation with Kreider, who will not be attending the camp, and with that basically eliminating any remaining doubt of what his plans are for 2011-12.
The full roster can be found after the jump.

MclWrath is 6’5? Holy fucks, he’s gonna be a monster checker.
I had no idea we were allowed to invite players from other teams. Marchessault is on the Habs isn’t he?

Marchessault is the kid we just signed, he was Bourque’s teammate in the Q. Not sure why he’s listed as an invitee instead of with the roster.

And McIlrath is not the biggest kid on the roster
There are 2 guys 6’8 but the one match I want to see is McIlrath vs Samuel Noereau both 6’5 and both had double digit fighting majors

My totally non researched, non expertise five to watch
1) Hagelin- According to prospect extraordinaire Jess Rubenstein, he has the best chance of making the pro roster
2) McIlrath- Wanna see how much he’s grown in a year
3) Erixon- Gave up both of our 2nd rounders for him and is highly touted…lets see what he can do
4) Thomas- Kid put up 54 goals in the OHL last year, might not make the team this year, but he’ll get a pretty good look
5) Borque- Dunno much about him, besides the fact that he’s been injured lately
Go ahead tell me why I’m wrong

Nothing wrong there. I put Fasth and Miller ahead of Erixon and Hagelin. I agree Hagelin has a great chance, and believe Erixon will also, but I’m more interested in how those two do in camp than how they do now.
I’m really curious how Miller compares at this stage of the game, even though he’s still young.

Strange Kid George
Since he was taken I asked everyone who knew him about him and they put him up against Biggs.
Said Miller was more finesse, Likes to go top side right with his shot and that Miller had better upside than Biggs.
But turn around and ask another person and you will get a totally different story.
He is a “free spirit” who sometimes gets lost in the moment. Pray for his soul if he gets lost around Tortorella

You may be selling bourque short, he has the type of a skillset the Rangers covet as shown in his most recent WJC campaign. I have a feeling the organization is a lot higher on Ryan Bourque than the fan base currently is.

well I'd be higher on him
if i heard more about him…I’d have to do some more research on him but all i know is that he’s had penchant for being injured

Watching him in the WJC
He has UNCANNY passing and awareness, plus carries a 55 gallon drum of beloved JAM.
Laser accurate, super hard passing was the thing that stood out for me. Played like Callahan, except at Center.
Given his pedigree and his showing on a big stage, I’m very high on Mr. Bourque
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

He is a lot more skilled than people give him credit for.
I posted this video earlier in the season, it just shows off his hands and his personality.

Here are a few guys I think were good invites
Nikita Zaytsev if he was not Russian would have been drafted. Not super physical dman but plays position well. Nice hands and decision making.
Andrej Sustr Is a 6’8 defender from the Czech Republic who somehow wound up playing for Nebraska-Omaha in the WCHA. Nothing other than his size stood out.
Ryan Flanigan played for Merrimack and every game I watched he scored in. He had 5 goals against Kreider’s Boston College, a 1-1-2 game against Notre Dame and etc.
He played UP to his competition which makes him a good risk.
Peter Ceresnak plays for a team in Slovakia that is broke and the skinny says he skates like Boyle did when he first came to the NYR. He has NHL body at 18 and if you fix his skating could be a steal
CHL Import Draft is Wednesday, if he gets taken I think the NYR will convince him to stay.

our two late round bash brother defensemen
Cresenak and Noreau are absolutely gigantic for 18 year olds. Odds are they never make it tho but can’t really argue with drafting that sort of size late in the draft
For all the worries about drafting a scorer, I wonder if Christian Thomas will be the one that’s eventually that ‘highly skilled forward’ we develop for the top line. That’s a ton of goals that he’s scored..tho I hope he’s not another Nigel Dawes.

ANy opinions from a hockey perspective on Krieder’s decision to stay in college? I mean, I’m very pro education, but I’m annoyed he’s not here already.
Yeah Buddy I'm annyoed and disappointed...
You only get one shot to be a pro anything in sports and there are a zillion others fighting to take your spot. But you could really go to school anytime. I figure he probably thinks he’s not ready, but hockey should be his life. I know it would be mine if I had his abilities and gifts to skate fastttttttt……..
I think the opposite with Krieder
He knows he is ready and wants to pad his achievements and stats
Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.
he'd be in the minors anyway if he was here
maybe an outside shot to make the team. He might be able to go back to school later, but only once will he be playing college sports.
Hockey is his life…why would he be playing college hockey if it wasn’t?
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
He's going be the THE guy on BC now
this is gonna be his year to show that he can in fact dominate and put together a big season with all of his raw natural talent. He’s had flashes of it in the WJCs and the WC he’s played in but he really hasn’t put it all together for a full season against Hockey East

it pisses me off, now I have to watch him destroy BU again, with the double whammy effect that it’s coming at the Rangers expense
Dammit Kreider

The only thing I can think is that he doesn’t want to pay for it. Pretty sure NCAA players have to pay their own way at these things.

because he's in college
he can’t accept anything from a professional team (dont tell that to football or basketball) so he would have to fly out and find a hotel room under his own expenses

Kreider made the right call
The key to a prospect advancing is by answering did he dominate at the level he was playing at. In Kreider’s case the answer was no as he (hate to say fail) just did not produce or show forward progress.
Against the very best in the NCAAs, Kreider was 0-1-1 in 7 games. Take away Beanpot week and he had at best an average year.
That he made the honest decision to walk away from money for improvement is his first big win. He could have taken the money and spent 2 years with the Whale.
Instead he took a full load of classes at BC (think he is going to try to graduate early) and focused his off-season workouts on himself.
He will be here next year and he will be ready

He is out of it and very excited to come here. I think he has a good chance of jumping Valtank and Kundratek on the depth chart (no small feet as they seem NHL ready) and maybe making the team this yr (depends on how we manage MDZ and wether we want a 1 yr vet since we could have a little space and I’m sure it’d still give good growth to the other D)
He was playing top-pair minutes in the KHL and was the number 1 pick in their draft last year, I’m really hoping he proves me right.
Can’t wait to see Thomas and Miller. I think Thomas is a better Grimaldi so they two of them together could be a pretty lethal combo down the road.
Don’t mind Kreider taking time but he should at least be at the camp…
Any info on Hobbs/Lindberg? Only two I don’t really know anything about.

Hobbs/Lindberg
Hobbs plays at UMass is a 2007 7th round pick who is about to start his senior season. I think he has underachieved as UMass it took him 3 years to start playing like a power forward.
Not very big but was leading scorer on a terrible UMass team was also an “A” for them. Can not see as serious prospect
Lindberg is who they got for Ethan Werek, skinny says moment he shows up he becomes the best faceoff guy the NYR will have,
High energy player who gives 100% honest effort. He is under contract in Sweden for 1 more year

Kreider will come in next year and put up 20 and 20.
I’m thinking Tony Granato/Tony Amonte type impact as a rookie. Completely sold on his taking another year at school.
Very interested to see Fasth/McIlrath and Thomas. Hagelin is polished, definite candidate 3/4th line and PK. Not to stereotype, but he reminds me of Nicklas Sundstrom (with a bit more offense). He wasn’t what the Rangers wanted as a first rounder, but had a pretty good career.
Not sure if I read this properly, but Christian Thomas’s dad (Steve Thomas) is British. Not sure how many other Brits have made it to the NHL.

Yes you have it dead on. Great forchecker and was WCHA defensive forward of the year last year. He has this knack of scoring highlight reel goals when the game is on TV.
What I want to see is a race between Hagelin, Stepan and Kreider as you know speed kills but these 3 can motor.
Hagelin’s defense is what will earn him a roster spot and you guys will love the Swedish Chef just like they did at Michigan

RE: Speed
Really? Stepan did not look that fast last year – Kreider seems to have at least one “higher gear” than Derek.
Definitely looking forward to seeing Hagelin.
Any thoughts on Thomas ?
Stepan wore down as the season went on (not unexpected). He had good jump early on.
The speed of Kreider and Fasth stood out a WJC. Kreider also looked good at WC, but his speed was closer to that of the competition (as you’d expect). But he was still quite productive.

Kreider
Let the kid finish school, its important to him, God bless, Alla Salute. The Rangers will be here when he is ready. Jess has brought the point up several times that he struggled this past season against the top competition.
When Kreider was drafted, the “knock” on him at the Draft was that he was a “5 year kid”, meaning 5 years to the NHL.

So I guess you're reminding everyone
that he’s only 2 years (this will be the 3rd) into that “5 year” cycle.
We’re all hopeful that it will only be those 3 years before he goes pro – but time will tell – he may need 1/2 year or year in the AHL to get really ready…
but, but
