Rangers News: Drury WILL be Bought Out, Avery & Wolski Will NOT

To follow up on our earlier report of the Rangers possibly buying out the remainder of captain Chris Drury's contract, Larry Brooks of the New York Post has in fact confirmed that the report is true and that GM Glen Sather called and informed Drury that he will be bought out. Brooks also confirms that Sean Avery and Wojtek Wolski will not be bought out.....

General Manager Glen Sather has informed Chris Drury that the Rangers will buy out the final season of his contract, The Post has learned.

Drury, the team captain whose 2010-11 was ruined by injuries that limited him to 24 games during which he was reduced to a bit player, had signed a five-year, $32.5M free agent contract on July 1, 2007. It was the same day the Rangers signed free agent Scott Gomez to a seven-year, $51.5M deal.

The Post has also learned that the team will not buy out either Wojtek Wolski or Sean Avery, each of whom ended the season with tenuous futures on Broadway.

And again, buying out Drury will open up $3.3 million in cap space for the Rangers.

I’m surprised they’re not buying out Avery as well. I really don’t want to see dreck like Wolski on next years team, but I can’t see anyone being dumb enough to trade for him considering how much money he’ll make next year.

by graves9 on Jun 9, 2011 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

Wolski = to be traded. Avery = reward for getting Richards to come here. SOMEONE has to play LW on the 4th line.

by Richter1994 on Jun 9, 2011 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

Who would be interested in a stiff like Wolski?

if only you could eat some of that contract but NHL rules prohibit that.

by graves9 on Jun 9, 2011 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

for one year there are probably takers (even if it’d for nothing then you take all his $3.8M off the cap). I agree, I said for a while that he’s a (talented) stiff. but if the Rangers announce he’s being bought out then they have ZERO chance of trading him. right?

and after 2011-12 WW & Avery will be off the books for good.
Conversely, I think a 4th line of Avery-Boyle-Prust is a solid line of pests that will hustle and generate some offense. And if Richards comes to town then why not WW-BR-Gabby on the 1st line? if Wolski can’t score on a line with those two then he never will and his $3.8 will create cap space for next summer

I wonder if just getting rid of Dru this way, through buyout

is just to open up enough dough to re-sign Dubi and Callahan. Would we have enough to re-sign both of them and give Richards a $7mil/year deal, I dunno.

I can see Brooks Laich unless

The Rangers do not secure Richards. My fear is what Richards will want in terms of Money and years, That scars, albeit he would solve a major need on the PP and first line center. I would love Richards but he all fails and we get Laich, that would be a great asset as well. He is younger and would be cheaper but for the Rangers to fulfill their needs, a trade would most likely follow. I can see some sort of deal for an elite player. Who knows!! Maybe Sather is revisiting the idea to trade for Patrick Sharp, Chicago throws in Mike Scott to take over for Boogard role.

It looks more and more like the signing will be 1-Richards, 2-Enforcer 3- Some sort of trade of a current roster player and a player in the system for a winger

Laich with Cally and Dubi would be an intense line..talk about grit..

All facts, but Spezza has also been more productive over his career. Stastny has yet to break the 30 goal mark.

by one-bar on Jun 10, 2011 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Spezza also has the benefit of playing with a possible Hall of Famer (Alfredsson) and Dany Heatley, both point-per-game players.

Stastny hasn’t had that luxury, the closest being Chris Stewart, or when he lined up with Hejduk and Ryan Smyth before he was traded

“had” as far as Heatley is concerned.

And Spezza hasn’t played 65 games in either of the past two seasons. I think he’s a better scorer than Stastny, but you need your guy actually on the ice to be effective.

Sure, he slumps (like plenty of other players in the league) but that means he also streaks. He’s averaging more than a point per game throughout his career.

I bet the next thing will be “Well, he was on Heatley and Alfredsson’s line for his best 3 seasons”. To that, I say look at the players around him this year. It’s no wonder he went on a terrible slump… Ottawa doesn’t have much.

So put him with Gaborik and either Wolski/Dubinsky/any other player that can produce in front of the net and he becomes a point per game player again… Something this frnachise is badly missing.

Then there’s the arguement that we have to give up assets to get him… Well, no matter who we bring in, we’ll have to make room. Gabby/Dubi/Cally/AA/WW/Boyle/EC/Prust/Avery/Stepan/MZA/Feds… I count 12, plus the person you bring in and that doesn’t even include any of the hopeful kids we didn’t play last year or any other free agent pickup.

The one negative is his contract – 4yr/$8m… But signing BR would be similiar to that ($7m-$7.5) and for longer on an older player (who ha salso had injury problems in the past).

Ultimately, I think Spezza is just as good of a fit as BR (who might not even want to come to NY) and is a much better offensive fit than Statsny (although I like that Paul is more physical and a better two-way center).

In the event that’s true, they’re much better off just sitting tight w/ what they have, letting the kids progress one more year, and going full-bore after Patrick Sharp (and maybe Alex Semin or Ales Hemsky also) next season.

They’ll have more cap room with WW and Avery gone, they might get lucky and get Redden to void the contract this summer (which frees up the summer overage next year for even more room). It’s not a strategy that will work forever, but next years UFA class is deeper at forward, and thus better than overpaying anyone that isn’t Richards.

Summer

I would be fine with sitting tight if Richards doesn’t work out. I think our team with D (which is set for practically 8 years if we want) and a solid group of forwards and forward prospects will have a great window either 3 or 4 years out and then for 5 years. With Richards maybe it is 2 to 3 years out… otherwise I would look to maybe trade for Pavelski or Statsny if a good deal, maybe Jussi Jokinen or Leino if it is a good deal, especially JJ as he plays a two way game and can be a 1st/2nd line guy and in 4 years would still be good depth on 3rd line. Otherwise we would have some money to spare (probably at least 7.7 million after signing RFAs and assuming Weiss on the 4th line) and so maybe look to take a bad contract on a trade and get a better prospect or something

by bwl1 on Jun 9, 2011 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

I said that 2 years ago and got luke warm responses from other fans. he gets around 60 pts on a horrible panther team. put him with Gaby and who knows? a couple of problems though: panthers need to spend as they are currently way under the cap floor, they love Weiss, he loves them (for whatever reason), and he’s a bargain at $3.1M per for the next 2 years. It would take a boatload to trade for him given the issues I mentioned.

by Richter1994 on Jun 10, 2011 6:08 AM EDT up reply actions

If I all these rumors are true

Which I believe they aren’t because I think Brooks just wanted to steal Jessie’s thunder on the story about Drury, then how about we get Wisnieski at a reasonable price. Re-up Cally Dubi, AA, and Boyle. Forget about adding another forward. Bring up a kid to play, Zucc, Krieder(probably not), Grachev etc. Force feed them ice time, and hang around with 7 million open in space all year, once the deadline comes BOOM…Grab a guy like a Grabovski from Toronto or some other team that looks like their season is in the tank. All that would require us to do is stay afloat until January/ February. Maybe even get lucky to experience Stastny go to blows with management and want out. Maybe get him cheaper. Lots can happen during the season, why not sit on some cash and attack a team looking to deal.

Plus they have 13 players this year that are either UFA or RFA and even more next year. in fact besides Stastny they only have one player signed beyond next season.

But I think they would be smart to hold onto both. You really can’t build around just one player and as good as I think Duchene is right now and will be down the road, he’s not quite Crosby or Ovechkin territory either. Keeping Stastny and Duchene along with Erik Johnson on the blueline is a good start for that team that looks like it took quite a big step backwards last year.

Oh I agree, if I were them I would as well but not sure what financial constraints they are up against.

Because we need someone to shoot on the power play?

Speaking of Cally?

Rumors are circulating on FB that Torts has already told Cally he’s the next NYR captain…can anyone confirm that this has been done even though Drury’s buyout is not finished? Thanks! :)
