New York Rangers Analysis: Choosing The Rangers Captaincy

The Dynamic Duo celebrates after successfully catching The Long Island Loser

As far as this offseason has gone Sather has done just about everything right. He's bought out Chris Drury, a necessary move for the team to move forward. Glen also went out and acquired Brad Richards, the number one center this team has needed for a long time.

There is something this team is missing however, a captain.

With the Rangers buying out Chris Drury they have a need for someone to take up the captaincy and while Ryan Callahan may be destined to fill in that role, there are two alternate (assistant however you want to put it) spots that need to be filled. Some say that its Dubinsky and Staal's spots to lose some have other ideas

Take the jump to see my top five candidates for those alternate captain slots

Star-divide

Brandon Dubinsky: One of the more obvious choices as fans and the team have come to see Callahan and Dubinsky as the dynamic duo of this youth movement that the Rangers are going through. He isn't a bad choice to be Cally's second in a similar situation as Jagr and Shanahan (Jagr led on the ice while Shanahan led in the clubhouse) Dubi seems to be the more spirited of the two but Callahan's effort on the ice and his self sacrifice gives him the C

Marc Staal: Staal is another leader of the youth core, being the team's best defenseman he would be a good choice to back up Callahan as a voice of leadership on the ice seeing as how he brings that same effort game in and game out

Brad Richards: While Richards may be a new addition to the team, he has been an alternate captain during his brief stint in Dallas and coach John Tortorella knows about Brad's leadership credentials very well since the two won a cup in Tampa Bay with Richards getting Conn Smyth honors during that play off run. Also Richards could be a good veteran leader to help teach Callahan and Dubinsky grow as leaders of a professional team

Brandon Prust: Yes Prust may not get the attention that Dubi and Cally get, but Brandon Prust proved last year that he is willing to do what has to be done for the team and still did not miss a game. His on ice work ethic and his awesome "It's just pain" quote puts him in the running for an A

Rotating alternates: While Callahan is the most deserving of the C, head coach John Tortorella may want to rotate who gets the A as the team plays throughout the season

The decision as to who will get the C and two As will be made after training camp by the head coach, but it never hurts to speculate.

Here's my choice for the Captaincy

C- Ryan Callahan

A- Brandon Dubinsky

A- Brad Richards

OK guys...thoughts? Opinions?

Dubi

He should be next if Cally is getting the C Dubi should replace his A. Our youth will be led by the ones who came before them and thats Cally, Dubi and Staal. I like Richards and i can see y he could get an A but i just think with how our team is built that is should go to our home grown. I love Prust he is great to watch and i root for him but i just dont see it happening for him. They all have their positives im just a homer for our home growns and youth.

I think it has to be Cally ©, Staal (A) (you can’t take it away from him), and Richards (A). I am a big Dubi fan but I think this makes sense. Of course, I think BR would be a leader with or without the letter as he understands his role so Dubi may end up with the other “A.” OR, you can alternate the “As” between Dubi and BR.

by Richter1994 on Jul 12, 2011 6:30 AM EDT reply actions

There are two options for the C: Callahan and Staal. A lot speaks for Cally wearing the C but with all the responsibility Staal gets, I think he’d be a good captain too.

The two As will go to Staal or Cally (whoever will not wear the C) and Brad Richards. Giving Brad Richards an A makes a lot of sense with what the Rangers expect from him. N1 center, leader for the young guys etc. I like Duby but unless Torts decides to rotate the A there’s just not enough As for him to get one.

Only concern about Cally

We need his production, not crazy about adding the pressure with the C. Marc Staal wouldn’t be phased by it and has risen to the occasion every time he’s been asked during his time here.

I think Cally will do just fine under pressure considering he was our unofficial captain all year. Now they’re just inking it.

Unrelated.. I have built a team out of existing UFAs that could beat the Islanders in a best of seven.

You could put this team together for less than the Islanders payroll and it would be better (but way older).

Left Wing Center Right Wing
Propsal Niedermayer Selanne
Samsonov Stillman Zherdev
Ruutu Marchant Grier

Dave Hannan Brent Sopel
Shane O’Brien Steve Eminger
Ruslan Salei Paul Mara

Also, that’s not beating NYI. Selanne is the best forward on either team, but NYI is icing the next 6 best forwards. The goaltending may not even be better than NYI’s, and on D, Streit’s pairing and Macdonald-Hamonic are the two best D pairs.

The captaincy should go to Dan Girardi, IMO. This team has been built on its defense, and Girardi showed that more than anyone over the last 2 years more than he has.
His alternates should be Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky. Although the team has veterans on board, the youth should be put to the test in terms of their leadership. I think they can meet that challenge.

Not saying I blame you; that was a total embarassment, but IMO, Girardi more than made up for it last season. He’s not my captain for next season, but he definitely could have worn the C on his chest this past season with cally and drury out for so long.

I know he looked lost sometimes without Staal, but he sacraficed his body for the team and defended his teammates all season long.

And try not to trade away Staal.
Then we’ll speculate who will be C and A.

I agree you can’t take the A away from Staal as he’s already earned it but I hate the idea of Dubi missing out on the A because he has been an obvious leader especially emotionally. I do however see it going as most of you have said: Cally with the C, BR and Staal with the As. Don’t forget what someone else mentioned about different home and away alternates like 94 though unorthodox this team seems to be a prime candidate for something like that. But I don’t think that will happen. My want is Dubi and Staal with the As and Cally the C but I think it’ll be like I said before.

by Mr. Avery to you on Jul 12, 2011 8:52 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

alternating A's

I have in the past suggested having different A’s for home and away games. I believe Renny did it and obviously its been done prior (Keenan).

anyway I would LOVE to see 4 A’s reason being there are so many people who deserve it. To me Cally wearing the C is a forgone conclussion. At home i would have Dubby and Staal. away would be Prust and Danny G. To me that is the most fair way to reward your warriors that you have built a team around.

thing about duby

Him and cally almost always play together and they should. But you really want the assistant cs on different lines for the advantage of having a leader more available to talk to the refs. Leading by example might also be better spreading out a bit.

I think boyle or prust are deserving. Stepan is a choice down the road also.

I’d like to see home and road alternates again might help even out our crappy home performances

Pressure

I think the “C” belongs to Callahan and the “A” belong to Dubinsky and Prust. Richards has got enough pressure on him without adding the additional weight and responsibility of captaincy. In the end the coach will choose who wears which letter or any at all. The coach gets to see who is leading the team on and off the ice. The fans, as much as we love our team and it’s players, only see a fraction of what goes on with the team dynamic.
I’m sure Torts will make the right choice.

by SideByEach on Jul 12, 2011 9:58 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Agreed

As I say in threads every now and then, I would say Staal is 4th or 5th down the line in deserving of an A. He is one of the most talented players in the NHL, makes his D partner better and eats up big minutes, but I think Dubi, Cally, Prust and now richards will do more to deserve letters.

Not to sound like a goon monger, but I think a prerequisite for a letter is that you will stand up for your teammates on the ice. Staal doesn’t do that, simply put. The only fight i remember him being in is when semin embarassed himself by slapping him like a bongo, but that overshadowed the fact that Staal turtled on the ice.

As I’m sure someone will bring up, we don’t know what goes on in the lockeroom, which is true, but from what I see (which is all I can use to speculate), Staal is way too bland and behind the scenes to wear a letter for this team. That said, I’m not sure how you can take the A away from him.

But IMO there is no place for Avery on this team any longer. Unless he blows us all away in Training Camp or Pre-Season. I would much rather give his spot on the third line to a younger more desrving AHL’er like Hagelin or Thomas. Any one else have any ideas on this..

I am pretty sure the Rupper signing just sent Avery to the AHL, or the Press Box, or back to Vogue.

thomas has never played in the AHL, Hagelin played like 6 games after college last year. How does that make them more deserving AHLers?

I have no problem if they beat him out in camp, I want the best guys on the team, but these guys have zero history of playing professional hockey. they deserve nothing untl they earn it.

Richards

They signed the guy to a 9Yr deal and to be a leader of this team. While I do think Callahan has earned the right to be named Captain, I think Staal and Richards will get the A’s.
C – Callahan
A – Richards
A – Staal

Don’t get me wrong, I think Dubi is certainly capable of wearing a letter and has proven he can be a leader on this team. I just have a feeling Torts will want Richards to take on that role more so than even maybe Callahan.

by Mike_from_NNJ on Jul 12, 2011 10:38 AM EDT reply actions

Yes, this is my call too Mike. We have a nine year commitment to Richards. This means we’re, in effect, asking him to lead us…somewhere. I would begin with giving him an A and make him earn the C through his performance. He shouldn’t step right on the ice with the C on his chest, that would be too much. But it should be there for him to earn.

In the meantime, this is Callahan’s badge. Dubi and Staal have also earned it. Prust, as much as I love him, is not an elite player in any capacity. He’s great to have, I want to keep him, but he’s not an A or a C by a mile.

I also agree

and can’t add much more here, except given Torts knowledge of (his game) and relationship with Richards, BR will almost certainly wear a letter this year, and for reason well articulated above, it will start off as an “A.” As for the other letters, I think and hope it will be C for Cally, and A for Staal.

From Wikipedia
According to International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and National Hockey League (NHL) rules, the only player allowed to speak with referees about rule interpretations is the captain, or, if the captain is not on the ice, an alternate captain.12
Although the rules do not specify any other distinction between the captain and his teammates, the captain has numerous responsibilities to the team, particularly in North American professional hockey. The captain is a dressing room leader, and also represents the players’ concerns to management.3 During the game, captains are expected to motivate their teams, particularly captains who are stars or franchise players.[citation needed]
The captain is often considered the primary representative of the team to the public, sometimes is responsible for organizing the team’s social functions, and performing ceremonial on-ice functions such as award presentations or ceremonial faceoffs.3

No but

We did see a team that was fully committed to playing a selfless style and that held together much stronger than any team in recent memory. They stayed in control when leading games (undefeated in the regular season when leading after 2) and were able to claw back into games that in previous years they seemed destined to lose, the Boston game at the end of the year being the best example. Maybe they didn’t have a de jury captain, but they were far from aimless out there.

The whole captain thing has to be one of the moat overblown conversations. It really doesn’t matter that much. Even if Richards doesn’t have a letter, he is still going to speak up and be respected.

Your 3 picks are kind of a slap in the face of Staal...

There’s no way they would take the ‘A’ away from Staal and give it to Dubi. That would be insulting. Staal wore it during the year in Prospal’s absence, so clearly he was next in line. If Dubi were to get a letter, it would have to be alongside Callahan and Staal, who already wore them. So if Richards gets a letter (which I doubt) then Dubi will likely be left without one since two others are ahead in line.

Pierre McGuire needs to go away.

Lots of love for Dubi.. common name on other teams wish lists.

Are they hot for him because of what he has done or what his upside still might be. He’s a good player, but he’s a 50-60 point guy in my book. If Rick Nash gained 25 pounds of beer gut or ruptured both achilles tendons and had nerve damage in his hands that resulted in him losing 15% of his stick handling/passing/shooting/finishing ability… he’d be Brandon Dubinsky.

And furthermore....

Jess Rubenstein just posted a similarly themed topic on his “Prospect Park” blog about how leadership is not defined by a letter worn, to which I replied the following which explains further as to why Cally is, gloves down, THE man…

While a letter may not explicitly “define” leadership, it damn well sure helps to be a not-so-subtle reminder to teammates when they see it day after day permanently sewn right above the R-A-N-G-E-R-S logo on that player’s sweater. If u look at the first defn of leadership Jess included…

“The test of a leader lies in the reaction and response of his followers. He should not have to impose authority…He must make his influence felt by example and the instilling of confidence in his followers. The greatness of a leader is measured by the achievements of the led. This is the ultimate test of his effectiveness.”

…this has got Cally written all over it, as an NYR Captain for sure. While BR has shown these qualities while wearing TB and DAL uniforms in ours and other buildings, he has yet to do it while wearing NYR colors in MSG/NYC. That’s a fact. Cally has. Also a fact. And, though Staal certainly logs enough minutes to make an overall impact on a game or games, Marc’s ability to sense and dramatically change the flow of a particular game with a timely hit, a precious PPG, a PK blocked shot (sans injury, hopefully) or a fight is not as prevalent nor as instinctive as it is with Cally. Or with Dubi for that matter, who was noticeably left off Jess’s list (ref. Dubi vs. Ovie @ MSG’s 7-0 rout.) Plus Staal seems very “Leetch-like” in his soft-spokenness and I think the “C” would weigh heavily on Marc’s already tiring 30+ mins./game, just as it did on the superior-skilled Brian.

If you subsequently add Messier’s defn. of leadership to the mix…

“As a captain, I think it’s important that the players really know who you are and what you stand for, what your beliefs are, and to be consistent in those if things are going good or things are going bad.”…

…it’s Cally again and not b/c I think so, or most fans think so or even b/c the revered Messiah himself may think so. Just go back and look at post-game after pre-game after b/w-game interviews with Torts, the man who, as NHL rules stipulate but I do not agree should be solely responsible for, will ultimately decide who our next Captain is. JT consistently lauded and praised Cally all season long for his singular ability to define and represent the “identity” of this team, what the Rangers as a team and organization “stood for”, and both times when Cally went down with injuries, Torts flat out called it “devastating” and the loss “irreplaceable.” The often clandestine coach also quite frankly admitted after Cally’s Chara-induced, season-ending injury that he’d have to break the habit of calling out “Cally” from behind the bench every time it was a PP, a PK, a 1-goal deficit, a spark was needed, during the frenetic last minute, etc., etc., etc.

In all honesty, the bottom line is I don’t see how GS, JT, Rammer or anyone else even remotely affiliated with this team, as it is currently constituted and finally well-positioned for both the short and the long-term, can pick someone other than #24 to wear the “C” w/o having to defend the utter hypocrisy of it all.

We shall see… :)

C- Callahan
A- Staal
A- Richards

I don’t think it is right to take the “A” away from Staalsy after the team gave it to him last year. I also think that we need to put the “A” on him to make it clear that he is the leader (albeit a young one) of the defensive corps. I think it is essential to have someone in that very young group step-up as the guy who everyone looks to as an example.

Dubinsky is a little too impulsive and fiery for an “A” in my opinion, though that also may be why he would make a great alternate captain.

This must be the first time we have disagreed on something in a long time 8k… I feel empty inside.

Not exactly sure why torts went with Staal instead of Dubi, but that decision has already been made and to reverse it would be an insult to Staal. No chance that happens. Cally has a letter too, whether its a C or an A is still unclear. So either Dubi or Richards will get the third letter. If its Dubi then Cally gets the C. But if Torts goes with Richards, its definitely possible that he gives him the C right out of the gate.

I for one agree with George – - it does not really matter to me – - just something to talk about while waiting for the RFA’s to sign.

I didn't read everyone's comments, but...

I think the team is better served if Dubinsky is not part of the designated leaders. His fire naturally pulls his teammates behind him and forward united, labeled or not.

One thing we see from Dubi that we all LOVE is his “take no sh1t from anyone” attitude, as demonstrated when he beat the $!# out of Ovechkin at center ice that time (or the other times). He likes to mix it up both physically and with words, and likes to play out to the edge almost like an agitator. I worry tagging him will actually make him change the way he views his role on the team and take a small step away from that edge. But that edge is exactly where he should be.

I could easily see Torts giving it to Richards over Dubi though. I would give it to Dubi though cause he has been here is whole career AND I could see him being offended by not getting it because it means so a great deal to him. Richards on the other hand could lead with or without the letter and will probably not be an concerned by it.

Dubi would probably feel snubbed if Richards gets it over him, where I think Richards would be happy to see the kids lead, especially with all the pressure already on him.

Capitals captaincy timeline:
05-06: Jeff Halpern; traded
2006: Ovechkin declines captaincy
2006-2007: Chris Clark named captain
2009-2010: Clark traded; Ovechkin approached about captaincy; asks coaches to ask teammates; teammates vote unanimously for Ovechkin

So obviously his teammates thought he was alright. I think just looking at how many stars and 1st round picks are captains misses that many of those players are known for competing hard, doing whatever it takes to win, being a leader on the ice, taking heat and interacting with the media, etc. They’re pretty much trained to be captains.

Every night when the Rangers go out to battle, there is one man that you know, no matter what, even if he’s hurt or beat up, will give you 110%. That man is Ryan Callahan. He represents the never say die attitude of the New York Rangers (at least the 2010 team) and has the support of his teammates, and the fans. I have never seen Ryan Callahan skate slowly towards a puck, or shy away from a player to save himself, or avoid a speeding bullet to save an amazing Rangers comeback (hello, Boston Bruins game) Callahan defines the word captain.

Alternate 1: Marc Staal. I don’t know if he’s the best candidate, but you can’t take away an alternate for no reason in my opinion. I just don’t support that. Sends the wrong message.

Alternate 2: Mike Del Zotto. Sorry, I love MDZ. I’ll change this.

Alternate 2: Brandon Dubinsky/Brandon Prust. No, I’m not just saying this because my name is Brandon. The Rangers can use a guy that’s fiery and willing to fight for his teammates. I feel like it’s a tie between the two, and I’ll defer this choice to the masses. Either way, with the few negatives in their respective personalities, the two have earned their way into leadership roles, and have my full support.

Left Out: Brad Richards. Listen, I know he is a fantastic leader, and he is my first choice to take over in case of injury or failure to live up to expectations of the letter, but he has not played New York Rangers hockey yet. He has not spent a year with this team, he has not gone to battle with this team. He may be a terrific leader, but he can lead without the letter. I like the idea that you have to earn your way to a letter with the Rangers. Just my opinion.

Thoughts?
