Breaking New York Rangers News: J.T Miller To Play for Plymouth Whalers
New York Rangers 15th overall pick, Jonathan Miller has decided he will play for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Last month when he was drafted, Miller was committed to attend North Dakota and play for the Fighting Sioux.
Miller confirmed back in April that he would officially decide where he would play after the NHL Entry Draft. J.T Miller will now have the opportunity to play and develop at a higher competition level than the NCAA.
What are your guys thoughts? Would you rather see Miller play in the NCAA?

Anyone know ...
How he did at Prospect Camp? I’m always excited hear of prospects arriving earlier than expected, almost as excited as being the first to comment on the breaking news…
Hypothetically how soon could he be playing in the NHL? I do not comprehend the many nuances of contracts and stoof.
He stated
That he would like turn pro in the next year or so.

There are a lot of ways to look at this. There are obviously pro’s and cons to all of the leagues, but lets mention some of them in Miller’s specific case.
Pros: Going to the OHL will refine Miller’s offensive skills. The NCAA is a league where he would be playing a defensive oriented game, which is already one of JT’s strengths. He will get plenty of playing time in Plymouth to hone his offensive skills. He will always be with other kids who have the same goal as him, to make it in the NHL. He will be able to focus on hockey 24/7 unlike student athletes. We will get better scouting reports than in the NCAA. In addition to all these, if the NYR were to sign Miller to an ELC before the junior season started, he would be able to pocket the signing bonus money, while sliding the contract back 2 years. I don’t know about you guys, but 200,000 dollars is enough incentive for me to skip school.
Cons: Being as physically mature as he is, he might be able to overpower his way through the defense in a way you can’t in the NHL, not learning anything in the process (see Grachev).
+1, thanks for the info

Looking forward to it
Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a college NHL game, or even better, the NHL series added a college feature?
I’d add Kreider to the NHL, add him to the Richards, Gabby line, and destroy.

Please don’t overwhelm EA…they have enough trouble keeping the game straight just with what’s in it now..

NHL 11 is a failure of a game.
I love it so much, but it sucks.

just to stir shit up
does this mean he’s better than Kreider?

better skill wise can’t tell, however he will probably be more NHL ready in 2 years than Kreider will be in 2 years… meaning he’ll be better suited to play a full NHL season…
I think a while ago Jess did some comparisons about the levels and College was the lower levels of the prospect pools, college has taken a leap forward, but OHL is clearly a high competition pool than NCAA ranks… there are more better players in the OHL than the NCAA
doesn’t mean he’s better or worse, quite frankly i would say they aren’t the same type of player so comparison is unfair, but I would say that if they both went pro after this upcoming season Miller would be closer to being ready to play a full NHL season than Kreider… just purely from season length and game speed…

Do the Rangers have an affiliation with Plymouth?
Is this like their “single A” type club?
no
junior teams in the ohl, qjmhl, whl have no ties to nhl teams

He’s playing against younger competition but will play a lot more games. He’ll also have more time to devote to practicing since he won’t be tied up with chem labs and whatnot.
One thing I need clarification on: since Miller was playing in the NTDP when he was drafted, can he play in the AHL before he’s 20 or is he subject to the CHL eligibility rules?
North american = no AHL til 20

I’m not 100% sure, but I believe that’s the rule.

Nope. :-D
Since he wasn’t drafted out of the CHL, the “under 20 rule” does not apply.
Here’s an excellent read on the matter: Prospects Annex on the CHL- NHL Agreement
Christian Thomas, on the other hand, does fall under the rule, since he was drafted out of the CHL (in other words, when he was drafted he was playing for a CHL team).
Thanks db!

Had a feeling when you posted Jess said he wanted to turn pro after a year, because the math wasn’t working.
Thanks for keeping me in line.

Jess @the Prospect Park made the comment that if he really intended to turn pro after one year, he had no business going to NCAA, Plymouth would be the wiser choice. If he intended to play 2 or more years before turning pro, the NCAA might make sense (I’m paraphrasing all this, not quoting, and doing it from memory).
Presuming he’s serious about turning pro after one season, this is the smart decision for him.
I don't see the harm in this, as long as he stays healthy
and picks up more skills along the way
