New York Rangers News And Notes: Lazy Sunday Edition
Even less going on today than yesterday. Sometime you forget just how long these summers drag on with no real hockey news.
Since it got some pretty good discussion yesterday, here is a link to all the free agent defenseman still on the market. It looks like there might be a few reasonable players (Brent Sopel anyone?) who the Rangers can get for a low price tag.
Glen Sather won't make a move on a veteran defenseman, however, until he knows what he is going to give Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan. Sather also has to assume that top-flight prospect Tim Erixon also makes the team this year, which would add another $1.75 million to the cap.
While a veteran defenseman might also come from a trade, there's no reason to assume Sather won't at least take a long look at what would be available on the free agent market. Still, the focus is on Dubinsky and Callahan as of right now.
Use this as your open thread for the day. As usual, if any news breaks we'll have it here for you.

I know Eminger didn't exactly set the world on fire last year
But I feel like for continuity sake we should just bring him back for a mil. To my knowledge he didn’t grump about the healthy scratches after the McCabe pick up so he’s prob a good locker room guy.
And if Erixon/MDZ/McIllrath come in to camp on fire then two of those guys are gonna get the 5-6 spots anyway so good old Stevie can hang out at 7 and collect his $1.1M. I don’t wanna sign a vet who thinks he’s gonna play & have a grumpy 7th on the bench or then send down a kid who’s ready so the vet can play.
Were they saying "Boo" or "Boo-urns?"

I agree…..Eminger can be had for a million or so…..retain him.
Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.
no one was gonna point out to mr. kendrick jay that mcllrath has almost no shot of making the team this year? Additionally if Mcllrath, MDZ, and erixon all slot in the top 6, then who exactly is Mr. Jay trying to remove? Is it Staal? Girardi? Cant be Mcdonagh or the newly signed Sauer can it? Just a bit confused.

he was saying any one of those three have a shot at making the big club, even though McIlrath in reality doesn’t.

Brett Sopel?
Sure, why the hell not? I mean its a D-Man for the bottom pair does it really matter?

If we can get him for ~2 mill he’ll be essentially another Girardi but getting paid substantially less. Would not hate him on our team at all.

Girardi is a better Dman than sopel, and capable of logging first line minutes, which sopel can’t.
I wouldn’t be terribly opposed, he seems good enough in the locker room and has a big shot, but more importantly a big righthanded shot.

yeah righthanded is a very enticing thing

If you look at Sopel’s numbers when CHI won the cop, he played over 20 minutes 10 tens out of 22 games. He may not log 1st line minutes but when, depending on what kind of contract he would hypothetically get, you consider he could have a cap hit of about or less than 2 million, he be a better value since they both are defense first/hit/block shots like crazy defenseman.

Wasn't Sopel's corsi rating
pretty terrible last year? I wish the Rangers would have signed Sean O’Donnell. He would a have added size, toughness and veteran leadership and not cost much.
True but you have to wonder how much longer he can be effective, if hes not 40 right now he’s very close.

2010/11 Worst 20 Raw Corsi Ratings
Found this on another site, which pointed out some of these are obviously due to player match ups and roles. Not sure that accounts for Sopel’s placement.

I think he has one more
good year and he knows him limitations. He would have been great on the third pair.

We know that Tim Erixon is a talented prospect
but we haven’t seen him play and we don’t know if he’ll actually make the team. It is prudent for Sather to plan for the cap space in case Erixon does make the team but it isn’t a certainty. There are so many talented defensemen that will be in camp that any number of them can could make the squad.

Very valid concern, but the theory is that the SEL is close to the NHL in terms of quality of players and even closer in terms of being “a man’s league”/close in physicality. Three years as a teenager in the SEL is very valuable experience and is very translatable into the NHL. Furthermore I remeber reading a quote from Erixon on his seemingly easy transition onto the smaller ice surface (which would probably be easier for a defenseman as apposed to a forward like MZA).

Eminger is the best value on the list. I believe after S sees how much cap space he has , Emi will be re-signed. IMO, I think he is very underrated.
