2011 NHL Free Agency: Day Two Open Thread

The New York Rangers stuck to their guns on the first day of free agency Friday. Glen Sather made just two signings in Mike Rupp and Ruslan Fedotenko. Now, of course, the attention turns to Brad Richards. According to Richards himself, he has narrowed the offers down to just four teams, and he is expected to make a decision before the day is done. In fact, some circles are expecting a decision before noon. There have also been reports that the Rangers are the frontrunners in landing the coveted free agent, but at a nine-year pact. We'll obviously know more when it happens, but for now use this as your day two open thread to discuss the days news and events.

I posted that from my phone haha

im on a trip in the woods with basically no service, it didn’t even break my paragraphs.

Blueshirt Banter: Covering the New York Rangers the only NHL team with three home arenas.

If it’s 8 or 9 years, I think the best idea is to let him go elsewhere. I really think he wants to come to New York, and that he doesn’t want to go to Calgary or Toronto, and that he sees that he runs the risk of dropping to 3rd line center in LA. This is the best place for him, and I don’t think we need to go into the truly insane realm to get it done.

Personally, 6 years/$42-45 million is just about right to me. We’ll see where it ends up.

by captain9nyr on Jul 2, 2011 8:53 AM EDT reply actions

Why don’t people understand, it is more the teams that want that length than the player. Its the only way to have a reasonable cap hit. Those last 2-3 years are bogus and can be bought out at a fraction for the price/cap hit

Aucune clause de Mouvement

by Blueshirt in Paris on Jul 2, 2011 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I absolutely understand that. But, if it’s 6 for 42, 7 for 49, or 8 for 56, it’s still 7 a year. I understand the idea of adding dummy years at the end to lessen annual cap hit, but that sort of deal doesn’t accomplish that.

Richards at 7 million per

Is a fine contract. That just .5 million over the ridiculous 6.5 a year Brooks originally proposed

I mean, I’m no expert at structuring contracts, and it’s true, Sather has wiggled out of alot of recent bad ones, but that just sounds too high. Obviously, its not my money and I’d love his talent for the next 2-4, but I dont want to sit through another aging veteran producing shit for 7 mil again. I know I’m not saying anything terribly new here. Just getting it out of my system before I go get some sun. I’m sure my bro will text me as soon as anything goes down. Peace

Still hard to handicap the Richards race. NYR and LA are neck and neck. A line with Richards and Richards is interesting. NYR by a nose?

Have to be LA at this point. I also think this would probably bring Doughty back at less money, to fit and make the Kings a real Cup contender.

For the Rangers, we need to deal for a left winger who can pile up goals and PIMs to snag Richards. The money may be right for both teams, but put a Dustin Brown with Richards and Gaborik, we’d have him for sure.

40 is way too many.

We only want 20 goal scorers. Sather also likes guys with ceiling around 10 goals. Must have pained him to have Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, Anderson and Tikkanen all those years. He’s making up for it now with Rupp/Voros/Rissimiller/Shelley/Brashear/Hollweg/Orr.

I just hate him as a player. I want the Rangers to beat him the rest of his career. I feel the same about Ovechkin and Semin.

I totally understand the need to add a 1st line center to this roster, I just don’t think Richards at his current price is a good choice- in fact, I believe his signing will be a huge mistake. He’s a good player, but not even close to the franchise player he’s going to be paid to be simply because it’s the worst group of free agents in recent history. Seriously, he’s good, but did I miss his coronation as one of the league’s elite players somewhere? Add in the wrong side of 30 and most importantly, a concussion flag, and I honestly would rather the Rangers bide their time until somebody better suited for this type of contract becomes available (even if it means trading some of the complimentary parts they have developed). I’d rather wait.

Cuz I don’t

by Major on Jul 2, 2011 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Why? There’s no lock Avery makes the lineup, there’s no lock Rupp is the lineup every day either.

There’s no room for Bourque, that’s obviously because he’s a center, and we’re not going to need centers for a while with BR.

No. Avery as the 13F, Rupp as the 14th, EC released, MZA/Thomas as the 3rd RW

There’s still a lot of questions to be answered, and indications are that BR or not, the Rangers are planning to move a forward. Still way too early to speculate lineups really.

For all we know, a kid like Fasth could absolutely dominate in training camp and make the team. There’s a lot of talented youth around.

I'm concerned about what Slats does if he fails to land BR

His best trades are from when he’s dealing from a point of strength and not feeling pressure to get something done. Would hate to see a knee jerk reaction and over pay in a trade. While the RFA group and prospects are abundant.. I’ve resigned myself to standing pat BR doesn’t sign.

The bottom of the East is getting better. Toronto, FLA and the perennial cellar dweller Islanders should be better. Rangers will be hard pressed to keep at 90 plus point clip without progress from the youth and return to form for Gabby.

Richards said early on in the process that he wanted to win and play in a smaller market.

Richards is from P.E.I. – far eastern Canada.

He was impressed with the presentations by Los Angeles, Calgary and Toronto. Those markets are all different, but playing in LA gives him the best chance to win now. LA is also out of the hockey eye, compared to NY, CGY and TOR.

If I had to guess, it’s a two team race, NY and LA.

kypreos said that richards left some money on the table to sign with us for less. Good sign right?
Brooks also says that we should have about 3.5 mil left after we sign richards and all of our group 2’s.

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
