Top 5 goalies: Post Lockout

We have seen some great individual seasons from NHL goaltenders since the lockout. There was Steve Mason's rookie season where he posted a 2.29 GAA and took home Rookie of the Year honors. There was also Mikka Kiprusoff's 05-06 season which was good enough to win him the Vezina. Also Tim Thomas had an unreal season this past year winning the Vezina and Conn Smythe. However, none of these goalies have really been able to stay elite for consecutive seasons. While guys like Lundqvist, Brodeur( for the most part) and yes, even Luongo. Here is my top 5 list. 5. Ryan Miller- Since the lockout Miller has had 215 victories. During this stretch his SV% is 915. He will always be remembered for his Olympic heroics with Tean USA. Miller has really been the backbone for Buffallo the last six seasons. He also took the to the Eastern Conference finals in the 05-06 season. 4. Roberto Luongo- Was Luongo the reason the lost in the Cup Finals? Maybe, but either way he has been sensational in the last six seasons. His SV% is .919 and while he was not great in the Finals he does have good postseason numbers with a a 2.50 GAA and SV% .919. And he does have 32 W's in the last four playoffs. 3. Martin Brodeur- Since the lockout he has had three 40 win seasons and won a few Vezina trophies along the way. While has not gotten the playoff results he has wanted he has been great in five of his last six seasons. One also has to remember his age, 39. 2. Henrik Lundqvist-"Hank" has been a top goalie ever since he came into the league. Lundqvist has 213 wins since the lockout, which is when his career began. That is an impressive number considering he has played on some very mediocre teams. His GAA and SV% are 2.32 and .918 and he has been nominated three times for the Vezina. The King is well respected by the rest of the league and has been one of the few Rangers to never be booed. 1. Tim Thomas- I might take some heat for this pick, but Thomas has the ring. He is the only of these five that has won a cup since the lockout. The 37 year old put up some ridiculous numbers this past season with a 2.00 GAA and .938 SV%. He does only have a 158 wins post lockout. Someone might say that he only has winning percentage of 50%. His 09-10 year was a bad one, which makes his last season even better. His playoff stats are insane as well, 26 wins SV% 935 and GAA is just 2.06. You guys think this is a good list and do you agree with the order?

I love Henrik as much as any other Ranger fan…..BUT, Tim Thomas has 3 things that Hank does not since the lockout….A Vezina, a Conn Smythe, and a cup….Tim Thomas has been the man since the lockout.

by PhxRanger on Jul 20, 2011 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

And all those things in the same year?

Last year Thomas was the best goalie in the nhl, regular season and playoffs. Arguably the best player as well.

BUT, what about over the past 6 years? I think Hank definitely should get some votes.

not to mention, Thomas has won 2 vezinas since the lockout…not just this past season.

Good points. I’m too lazy but I’d like to know their wins, SV% and GAA, and shutouts over the past 6 seasons.

That would be a fair comparison. Well not so much the wins, butt he other stats.

Thomas- SV% .919 GAA 2.45 SO 26

Thanks!!

Obviously numbers aren’t everything, but Hanks look better, especially the shutouts. He also did this on a worse team.

Hank didn’t lose his starting job to Tuukka Rask, either, like Thomas did in 2009-10. So Thomas has the edge there too, I guess…..

by greifi griffie on Jul 21, 2011 8:30 AM EDT up reply actions

That was due to injury though… Which is the exact reason Thomas decided to wear an all white mask this season. He told Boston at the beginning of the season that if he isn’t the starter for them this year that he wants to be traded to another team that will allow him to start… so he went with an all white mask (since it would match any other team’s jersey).

by one-bar on Jul 22, 2011 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Thomas was healthy by the time the playoffs rolled around, I believe….and I brought this point up to show that for whatever reason, Tim Thomas has not been as consistent as Henrik Lundqvist, either in terms of games played per season or overall quality of play from season to season. Thomas has been up and down throughout his career, alternating excellent seasons with disappointing ones, while Lundqvist just goes out there every year and puts up similar numbers across the board. In six seasons, his save percentage has ranged between .912 and .923. His GAA rests between 2.23 to 2.43 every year, and other than his rookie year (when he played “only” 53 games in the NHL and six more in the Olympics, winning the gold medal) the man has played 68 or more games for five straight seasons…..that number doesn’t include playoff starts either, of course. And then there are the win totals, which don’t dip below 30 in that same six-year period. Hank is the most consistently excellent goalie in the world.

Prole art threat.

The King: the first goalie in NHL history to record at least 30 wins in their first 6 seasons. And on some terrible Ranger teams as well. Enough said. There have been goalies with better individual years but NO ONE has been better since the lockout as a whole. plus, you add the anti-Ranger bias in the league which explains his lack of award support. Game 7 in the Cup final then I want the king in nets.

this year Tim Thomas was unreal, however in order to properly compare Thomas to any others, you have to see waht other teams have done in front of their net minders… Boston’s defense is far superior to the rest of the other teams, and while Thomas may face 30+ shots a night, his team rarely gives up prime scoring opportunities and most rebounds are cleared out of the scoring areas… Lundqvist needs to not give up rebounds period to be successful, and thats what he does, when he doesn’t he gets scored on… put lundqvist on Boston and I do infact believe he’d dwarf Thomas’ numbers…

his team rarely gives up prime scoring opportunities

Those who tracked the scoring chances for the playoffs disagree with that assessment.

He did have an outstanding playoff, but I’m sure if I compiled the regular season results from the teams that tracked this year, it wouldn’t be much different. Boston’s D was seriously overrated this year.

I'm pretty sure

this list is backwards.
Just flip it completely and that’s the top 5 since the lockout. 2 great years and 3 average years doesn’t really show me consistency, which is what Miller, Hank, and Luongo have all shown since the lockout. Marty gets 4th because really until last year and the injury the year before, he was one of the best.

I disagree

about Hank having 3 average years. I think he’s been the most consistent of them all.

by stepan21 on Jul 20, 2011 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

+1. He’s never been the best goalie in a year, but almost every year he has been a top 3 goalie. He has been top 5 every year though.

I didn't say Hank had 3 average years.

I’m talking about Thomas’ 2 great years, then the year he lost the starting job and the 2 years before he really became good.

My list:
1. Miller
2. Hank
3. Luongo
4. Brodeur
5. Thomas

Thomas at #5?!?!?

This year alone makes him worthy of being ranked higher than #5.

Also, the year he “lost” the starting job to Rask was due to injury. IMO, Thomas is AT LEAST top 3 since the lockout… Hank too, of course.

by one-bar on Jul 22, 2011 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes at 5, this is for the past 6 years IMO, not just 2 years. And it wasn’t just injury, he wasn’t playing as well as he did the year before, then Rask played amazing. My main factor is consistency, Thomas has been great for only half that time. I’m not knocking him or anything, but this is post lockout era.

What I’m saying is that him not playing well was contributed to his injury, Thomas has been on recorded for saying that.

Comparing Thomas to Marty over the past 6 seasons is almost a wash (it seems like every good year Thomas has, Marty has a bad one that year and vice-versa). However, I would have to give Thomas the edge since he has won a cup since the lockout and a Conn Smythe trophy as well.

As for Luongo… Not a big fan. Yes, he’ll get close to 40 wins each season, but he has a history of struggling in the playoffs and really doesn’t have much to show for being listed as #3 (even though he’s on one of the more talented teams in the past 3 years). To me, he’s 5th on the list and battling it out with Vokoun and Ward.

Personally, I would put Thomas at #3.

Hank has done more with less........

………Tim has been lights out brilliant and yes, he has more hardware, but taken in total Lundqvist gets the nod. He’s also dreamy.

Not since the lockout, but over the next 5 years its a possibility.

Forget Rinne…Vokoun is the glaring, glaring omission. His lowest save percentage since the lockout is .919 (granted, both Nashville and Florida overcount shots), and he’s posted 41 shutouts on not-so-good teams.

I also have an issue with this. I like Tim Thomas, but out of anyone on that list Henrik and LOLoungo seem to be the most consistent. Last season(previous to the Cup) Thomas played himself out of the line up. I’m not even going to comment on Kiprusoff or Brodeur 2.0. Mason and Rinne have had a decent year or two but……thats all we have to compare with them. Brodeur has not been the same since the Devils stopped trapping. And head to head Henrik has crushed him. Miller, like Henrik can only carry their teams so far. 30+ wins during the season and playoff failure but not necessarily their fault as we’ve seen in two series against Washington where the team couldn’t put them away and score timely goals. I’m not saying Henrik is the best, he’s had Vezina quality seasons. But he is a top 3 goalie in the NHL

Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.

by earthworm on Jul 21, 2011 10:21 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think it was as much Thomas playing himself onto the bench as it was Rask winning the starting job. Thomas still put starting-caliber numbers, it’s just that Rask put up Vezina-worthy numbers (aside from GP).

Any way you want to spin it, the fact is that Thomas lost his job to his backup in ‘09-’10. That has not happened to Henrik Lundqvist, which is the point made by Earthworm and me in our posts. Lundqvist’s consistency is something that has eluded Thomas to this point in his career. I expect that a Cup victory will help Thomas maintain the mental edge necessary to remain at his current level for at least the next couple of years.

Having said that, I must say that I believe Lundqvist has been the best goalie in the world since 2006—and he shows no sign of slowing down, despite a massive amount of games played in that time period.

Agreed.

Henrik is up there, he hasn’t been the best in any year, but he’s been one of the best every year.

Its true that hank has been more consistent, but at the same time we have never had a backup of Rask’s calibur.
