Breaking New York Rangers News: Dubinsky Signs Four-Year Deal

NEW YORK - APRIL 09: Brandon Dubinsky #17 of the New York Rangers celebrates scoring a goal against the Philadelphia Flyers during their game on April 9, 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

The New York Rangers announced they have avoided arbitration and agreed to a four-year deal with forward Brandon Dubinsky. Reports are surfacing that the deal will have an annual $4.2 million cap hit with a total of $16.8 million.

The deal is also broken down to pay Dubinsky $3.75 million in the first two years and $4.65 million annually in the final two years of his contract.

Dubinsky lead the Rangers last season with the 24 goals and 30 assists. Dubinsky also stated at the end of the season that "I’d like to get it done as quickly as possible. I think the Rangers want me, and I want the Rangers. So at the end of the day, we may as well not waste each other’s time."

With this new deal, the Rangers can turn their full attention to locking up the final RFA, Ryan Callahan. This deal shapes up good for Ryan Callahan, who is expected to receive around the same numbers as Dubinsky.

Dubinsky caught up with the NY Post about his new deal, here is what he had to say:

"I wanted to be in New York, it’s the place I live, it’s the place I love and I want to be here forever. At the end of the day, I think it’s a homerun for me. I hope the team feels the same way"

“I can’t even tell you how much I’m looking forward to the season, with all the guys we have coming back plus the signings we’ve made with Richie [Brad Richards] and Mike Rupp, I think we’re going to be a contender in the East; I really feel that way."

“I high have expectations for myself and for the team. The last couple of years we’ve talked about being contenders. Now I truly believe we have the team to do it, not just talk about it.”

RANGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH

FORWARD BRANDON DUBINSKY

New York, July 21, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Brandon Dubinsky on a new contract.

Dubinsky, 25, skated in 77 games with the Rangers last season, registering 24 goals and 30 assists for 54 points, along with 100 penalty minutes.  He established career-highs in goals, assists, points, power play assists (seven), power play points (11), and shots on goal (202).  Dubinsky led the Rangers in points, goals, assists, and road points (26), ranked second in shots, tied for first in road goals (14), third in power play goals (four) and power play points (11), fourth in power play assists (seven), and led all team forwards in average ice time (20:13).  He led the Blueshirts with a career-high, 13 multi-point performances, including a season-high, three-point effort (one goal, two assists) at Pittsburgh on March 20.  His goal in that contest, an empty-netter, was his 50th point of the season, marking the first time he reached that scoring plateau.  Dubinsky skated in his 300th career NHL game on March 3 vs. Minnesota, and recorded his 100th career NHL assist on February 1 vs. Pittsburgh.  In addition, Dubinsky led the Rangers with two playoff goals and tied for the team lead in scoring with three points in five postseason contests.

The 6-1, 210-pounder has skated in 316 career NHL contests with the Rangers, registering 71 goals and 108 assists for 179 points, along with 347 penalty minutes.  Dubinsky has reached the 40-point plateau in each of his four NHL seasons, and has notched 20 or more goals in each of the last two seasons.  In 2009-10, he established career-highs with a plus-nine rating and six power play goals.  Dubinsky led the Rangers in game-winning goals for two consecutive seasons in 2008-09 (seven) and 2009-10 (five), with 12 of his 33 goals counting as game-winners over the span.  His seven game-winning tallies in 2008-09 marked a career-high and tied for 14th among all NHL skaters.  Dubinsky was twice selected to skate in the NHL YoungStars Game at the NHL All-Star Weekend (2008, 2009), and was named MVP of the 2008 event after registering three points (two goals, one assist) in the contest.  In addition, Dubinsky has registered seven goals and eight assists for 15 points, along with 32 penalty minutes in 22 career NHL playoff games.  He established postseason career-highs in games played (10), goals (four), assists (four), and points (eight), while finishing fourth on the team in points and tying for second in goals during the 2008 playoffs.

As a rookie in 2007-08, Dubinsky ranked seventh in the NHL among first-year players in scoring with 40 points, and led all rookies and ranked 15th in the league overall with 196 hits.  He won the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, voted by the fans as the player who performs "above and beyond the call of duty," following his rookie season.  Dubinsky made his NHL debut on March 8, 2007 at Long Island, and recorded his first career NHL point with a power play assist on October 25, 2007 vs. New Jersey.  Dubinsky captured the 2006 Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award as the best rookie of the Rangers Training Camp as voted by select New York media.

Internationally, Dubinsky recently represented the United States at the 2010 World Championship in Germany, registering three goals and seven assists for 10 points, along with a plus-three rating in six contests.  He ranked second among all tournament skaters in assists and points.

The Anchorage, Alaska native was originally selected as the Rangers’ second round choice, 60th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Apology no, because he was quite shitty for a while. He does, however, deserve fucktons of respect for his work over the past 3 years. This is all leading me to believe that the shitty decisions he made back then were under Dolan’s influence.

Give the credit to Jeff Gorton not Sather as Gorton made the deal while Sather was off on his annual fishing vacation.

Yes Sather does deserve credit for improving the team but as the last couple of days proved; it only takes 1 problem to ruin what really should be a time of good feeling and hope

Would probably be just for space

or to allow Zuccarello to make the team. At this point I have no idea. A lot depends on the Callahan deal, and then if Erixon makes the squad.

There are 2 more deals after Callahan to be made

It sounds silly but because the Rangers made qualifying offers to both Chad Johnson and Stu Bickel their contracts (and QOs ) have to be added towards the Ranger summer cap hit.

Would like to see the hobbit make the team but the problem is not his size but Tortorella’s lack of confidence in him. All Zuccarello did was set up goals by 11 different Rangers which alone should be why he makes the team

Sending a guy nicknamed “the Hobbit” to forecheck against 6’2", 200lb defensemen when he’s on the ice with two other players (Wolski and Stepan) not known for forechecking themselves? Instead of allowing him to be the playmaker he is?

Sounds like a mistake to me. As well as Tortorella did coaching and getting the best from Dubinsky, Callahan, Boyle, Prust, I think he did a poor job with Gaborik, Zuccarello, and Wolski… and even Stepan if it is to be believed that he was the best playmaker on the team (as was said by Tortorella himself, I believe.)

I think we’ve GOT to give Wolski at least one more chance/year. He’s young, got lots of talent, has been working with Underhill, and will certainly be given a shot playing with BR and Gabby. The upside on WW is way too high to get rid of him now. If after this year he’s still lackluster, then he’s gone.

As much as I deride and bemoan Sather, I have to give him his props. He has done an excellent job with contracts and signings this offseason.

I’m also thrilled with Dubinsky because by all accounts, he came down in his negotiations both in money and year terms to remain a Ranger and avoid potentially injurious arbitration. Although we have had some close calls the past two years, he has ultimately proven himself to be a stand-up guy – a professional that cares about the team.

My wife hates that I compared the feeling I get after a productive bowel movement to that which I get after fornication. After five years of marriage I thought I could share that with her, comment did not go over well. Though I’d get points for pointing out there was no correlation between the odors created/observed during both processes. Did not help.

Prediction for 2012 Offseason

If two of the four guys below prove to be NHL caliber (meaning bottom 4 minutes) by next off season, the Rangers will look to move Girardi in a package to either free up space for a UFA top six wing or trade with a forward heavy team.

Erixon, MDZ, McIlrath, Kundratek

I like Girardi but I think the numbers will dictate his salary would be better deployed up front for scoring and outweighs potential drop off of plugging in the guys above. Again, this assumes most things constant (McD and Sauer stay close to last years form).

Forget about point totals for a minute of your life and think about what he means to our team. I don’t think I really have to explain that to you, or anyone else for that matter. If you watched any of our games this year you would know exactly what I mean. 4.2 million per is extremely reasonable especially when you look at similar players around the league. You’re so stuck on his offensive production that you forget what he does defensively. Also, have you seen anyone lately with better puck control along the boards? Even with pressure he can still handle himself. Now let’s shift the focus back to points. He had a steady increase in points every season, including the 10 point jump last year. You should expect nothing else this year. There is talk that he could play with Richards and Gaborik and if that happens you will see a surge in points. That I can guarantee. If not, another year with Cally and Artie couldn’t hurt either.

Okay, well

Tell me where +8, -6, +9 and & -3 are great to a defensive game? And pardon me if by no other standard I can his value is not to the contract he just agreed to. Like joereiter said, I do hope this indicates that he is trending up, and that his efforts equal more productivity. But, this was too much. Sather would’ve been better served to let this get to arbitration, probably saving $500k against the cap.

by Danz10 on Jul 21, 2011 3:56 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I know George can give a better answer, but how about this:
Just this year – Erik Cole, Ville Leino, Brooks Laich, Andrew Ladd, Brad Boyes (the only one not signed this year).

The only one I’d even consider taking over Dubi is Ladd.

by j-red on Jul 21, 2011 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s good enough, though not exactly comparable because all but Ladd were UFA.

To answer the question, no, I cannot name 5 since 05-06 that have similar stats for salaries, because I unfortunately don’t have the salaries of others players in the league either memorized or databased, nor are the stats that I would use readily available prior to the 07-08 season.

However, I did a whole thing on his comparables vs what he’s worth, and I came up $80k too high. So I don’t really feel the need to do the work again.

Wasn’t the point of this to resign an RFA? Let’s take Ladd out of this for the time being.

I can safely say that guys like Giroux, Burrows, Clowe, and Dustin Brown would surely say they got hosed in comparison to this. Not to mention (speaking of intangibles) that of these four I’ve named, Giroux and Burrows have been to a Cup Finals. Clowe has been in the Conference Finals at least twice.

This was not the right amount. Sather could’ve taken this one to arbitration and could’ve gotten Dubi to settle for less. My issue is the amount, not the retention or the length in terms.

"The winner of the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award is Number Eight, Brandon Prust!"--Ofc. Colin McDonald, NYPD, April 7, 2011

by Danz10 on Jul 22, 2011 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Giroux had plenty of reason to sign for more than $3.75m long before Dubi got his deal. By the end of this year, Giroux will likely be able to say he got hosed by upwards of 90% of the contracts in the league.

Burrows plays with the Sedins. If you don’t think Dubi could do the same damage as him with their 70% offensive starts, soft defensive assignments, and obvious elite talent, I dunno what to tell you.

Clowe had one 52 point season and little else behind it, including no PK time, which separates him from the rest of the group in terms of value. He got paid for one season. Yes, he’s broken out after that, but he’s also 28 years old now, 4 years ahead of Dubinsky and well into his prime.

Brown’s a bit better of a comparison as he at least had two seasons, one of which was a 33 goal year. I don’t have a good reason why he took $3.15m for 6 years.

I’ll be honest here, I saw in the other thread that you said “3.8, 3.9 max.” I have no idea why you continue to be so animated over a $3-400k difference. Are there guys signed to better contracts? Of course there are. No one’s claiming this is the best deal in the history of the franchise. For what Dubinsky brings though, 50-55 points against the leagues top players, while adding all the intangibles (which do not include being members of a good team), the value is just about right on.

by George E. Ays on Jul 22, 2011 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

That $3-400k difference isn’t my issue, and I’m glad to see that you have time to eyeball my other posts. The issue is that the market was warped somewhere regarding Restricted Free Agency; and Sather knew putting this number would only feed into the continuation of this idiocyncracy.
You can only control these contracts for so many years; and this was Sather’s opportunity to hold the cards just long enough to start setting things right. He didn’t do so, in this case. And that is my argument with this…as well as the fact that this was the player that Cigar needed to reel in without complication (including how much the cap number).
I say again, I’n glad he’s back; Dubi has become one of my favorite players. I just think this was too much for right around 55 points, a career +6, some nice intangibles, and a good penalty kill.
I’m not saying Dubi is not much, but $4.2 mil sounds more like Teemu Selanne (the 30-40 goal Ducks version, not the 76 goal-scorer in Winnipeg back in the day). That’s not Dubi (not yet, anyway).

30-40 goal scorers don’t sign in todays NHL for 4 mil. Atleast not regularly. Sure, here and there you see an underpaid player. But for everyone one of those there is an overpaid player.

What I’d give to have Ladd on the Rangers…

by Hoggo on Jul 22, 2011 3:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Aside from not using +/- as a good gauge of defensive ability

Maybe look at how well the Rangers PK has been since he’s been a part of it.

The arb probably would have awarded somewhere in the ballpark of his first 2 years of the deal. The next 2 years are UFA years that would be more expensive.

He’s on the verge of 60 points, which would put him top 50 in the NHL for forwards the past couple of seasons. He’s not making Gaborik/Richards/Kovalchuk money.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jul 21, 2011 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re countering this with “60 points putting him in the Top 50 over the last two seasons”? No, he’s not making Gaborik/Richards/Kovalchuk numbers, but he might as well be when you put that argument in front of it. Many put $4m in front of Dubi’s new deal and I said it was too high. Reason: the same said body of work. We’re not talking Bobby Ryan here, with all due respect to them both. But, this is a lot of money to give all at once. Just doesn’t add up to $4.2million, IMO. The intangibles are there; no denying.

"The winner of the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award is Number Eight, Brandon Prust!"--Ofc. Colin McDonald, NYPD, April 7, 2011

by Danz10 on Jul 21, 2011 4:18 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Gaborik/Richards/Kovy are guys that are capable of 80 point seasons, thus the higher value of their contracts. They get the mega contracts because there’s about 15 guys in the NHL every year that produce 80 points or better. The price of those guys is a combination of the marginal production of such players and the scarcity of players of that level in general.

Again, the arb ruling would have probably come in around what he’s getting paid the first 2 years so I see nothing wrong with years 1 and 2. You’re certainly entitled to feel that 55-60 points is not worth approximately $4.5M+, but the market says it is and I’m sure Dubi’s agent used comparable players to arrive at the demands that we awarded for years 3 and 4.

I think the Rangers relatively low-ball offer of 2.8 Mill for the arbitration hearing played into getting this to happen. Most arbitrators split the decision right down the middle meaning Dubi probably would have gotten in the neighborhood of 3.7-3.8 Mill. I’d wager the Rangers went to him this morning, said this is the final offer before arbitration, and Dubi agreed basically getting himself an extra 500K a year. I think it’s pretty obvious neither side wanted to go through with that hearing.

All in all, an agreeable contract for both parties.

On a side note, I have now moved Sather from ‘bottom 5 Gm in the league’, to bottom 10 in my book. He has had probably his best offseason as a Rangers GM. If he keeps up the good work, he might find himself in the top half by the seasons end.

Yes its been a steady uphill improvement for Lord Sather....

….I wonder if he went to Dubinsky’s agent and choked him using only his fingers from about fifteen away?

If you chalk up Redden, Drury, and Gomez as honest errors, Sather has been doing a lot better. As the philosophy of the Rangers changed he went right along with it. Its good to see that he finally gets it.

I wonder how much, if any, influence Mark Messier is playing in any of this? Is he being groomed? Does he have a lot of say in our moves and draft picks?

Assuming Callahan’s cap hit is similar to Dubi’s, there is just enough space for Erixon or Eminger, but not both, assuming MZA, Avery, Wolski and EC are all on the team (i.e., carry 14 forwards, 6 d-men). I agree with keeping Wolski for now. If MZA has a great camp and the Rangers really want to carry 7 defensemen, EC could probably be traded for a low draft pick without much trouble, freeing up the space for the 7th deferenseman. Otherwise, MZA or EC could be sent to Hartford, or the Rangers could just go with 6 defensemen for now.

This is the reason I was not happy with the FedEx signing. He takes up just too much cap space, really has no place in the Rangers future, and isn’t really essential this season (he’s not much of an upgrade over going with Wolski, Dubi, Avery, MZA and EC as the left wings).

by LJR on Jul 21, 2011 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree about Fedex – he’s an upgrade over Avery, MZA, and EC. His D-zone work is much better than all of them, he’s better along the boards and on the fore check than all of them, he can (and has) put up the most points out of all of them, and he’s a Cup winner with veteran experience. Add to that the fact that he’s played with Brad Richards before, and he’s the next best option at top line LW after Wolski (assuming we want the pack line together).
I think Fedex has a place on this team next year, way more than Avery and EC, though moving forward, MZA is a better long term option.

Fed-Ex's contract bad?

Fedetenko is a defensibly responsible utility forward who can and will do whatever is asked of him. He’s a character guy who historically steps up in the playoffs and is trusted by the coaching staff. On a young team this is invaluable. To let Fedotenko walk in order to retain what is essentially a problem-child whose usefullness may be at an end, an unproven rookie who may be too small for the NHL, a talented wing whose only consistency is inconsistency, and a talented center who is basically the hockey equivalent of Rain Man……….well, that’s just foolishness in my book.

Drugs are considered addicted for a reason.

One thing you don’t understand at all are the dynamics of drugs.

You yourself might be smart enough to see what they can do to you, but that doesn’t mean all people are.

Instead of calling others retarded, maybe you should be grateful that you understand what drugs can do to you.

Should have never started it in the first place? Are you serious?
Use some god damn inference skills. What did Boogaard do for a living? Take punches in the face? Punch helmets?

Doctors prescribe what Derek overdosed on. Maybe it just so happened that, given the line of work he was in, the DOCTOR TOLD HIM TO USE IT AS A PAIN MEDICATION?

Have you ever had a serious injury? You must know what it is like to cope with one. What would you do if you had a serious injury? Listen to your doctor? No you probably snuffed him and treated yourself because you seem to know everything. Anyways, if you were to listen to the doctor, he would give you the crap he gave Boogaard, which is sad because there are other things on the planet that can help people cope with pain that is a lot less harmful than Oxys.

Open your eyes.
