New York Rangers News: Mikhail Pashnin Leaves KHL For North America

The New York Rangers 2009 seventh round pick Mikhail Pashnin has decided he will continue his career in North America. Pashnin turned down a contract from CSKA of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He is currently in negotiations with the Rangers organization on a contract.

Pashnin comes in at 5'11", 190 lbs, but he loves to throw his body around and makes his presence known on the ice. He uses his hitting abilities and is a stay at home defensemen, but with work he can add some offense to his game.

With Pashnin's addition, this adds yet another solid defensive prospect to the Rangers organization and he will develop much quicker.

Pashnin's agent, has officially confirmed he is in negotiations with the Rangers that would bring him to the AHL this coming fall.

“Mikhail took part part in the Rangers rookie camp this summer and received good reviews.  Team management informs [us] that they expect him at their main training camp, starting in Sepetember."

Yet another highly talented defensive prospect is upon us. What are your guys thoughts?

So you're saying the CT Whale D looks like this (if erixon makes team, and eminger signed):

Redden – (MDZ or Valentenko, whichever doesn’t make the big team)
Kundratek – Pashnin
Niemi – Parlett

Wow, that’s like having a 1/2 NHL D squad, 1/2 good AHL D squad. They should do well.

Valentenko’s waiver eligible, Del Zotto is not, which will be a fairly large factor here.

what does that mean?

Does that mean MDZ cannot be brought up and down between HFD and NYR, but Valentenko can?

I think it’s the opposite.

by Hoggo on Jul 22, 2011 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Correct.

Valentenko will have to clear waivers to go to CT this year, Del Zotto will not. I don’t see Valentenko clearing waivers. It might have a serious impact on some things.

Well...

A lot of sources seem to indicate that Valentenko played at an NHL ready level all year last year in AHL, and in training camp. If that’s the case, why not let him play 40 games with the big team on the 3rd pair, pushing up his value, then trade him? Then with a half season in HFD, maybe MDZ will be a little more seasoned and ready to come back up?

by Tim-May on Jul 22, 2011 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if he plays well, there has to be a willing trade partner who values him enough to give the Rangers what they’d be looking for in return. And if he doesn’t play well, he has to stay with the Rangers, or they run the risk of someone grabbing him if he’s sent back down.

by Hoggo on Jul 22, 2011 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

so then what’s the solution? Sounds like he almost has to make the team? Sounds like the Rangers may be keeping 8 D and only 13 forwards if this is the case. Just so they can work him into an NHL player enough to get something for him. If he can get his value up to what other teams would give up for Sauer, then I’m happy with that. Interesting to see how it plays out.

I wouldn’t outright say it, but it’s going to be a monstrous tie-breaker with players, even Erixon.

So the next few drafts will be focused on O, very nice.

Be curious to see if Bourque or Stumpy’s kid take a roster spot from Avery or EC . . .

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

Hagelin = 2011-12 Version of Stepan

No doubt this kid makes it right from camp. Talented two way forward.

Let Hagelin get the time he’ll need in the AHL. No rush.

by Hoggo on Jul 22, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s not going to need the time. That’s the point.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jul 22, 2011 3:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He is quite polished already.

by The Blue Seats on Jul 22, 2011 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

He was the best player on the ice in the Frozen Four… and it was obvious.

by one-bar on Jul 22, 2011 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

excellent playmaker in college…

by The Blue Seats on Jul 22, 2011 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he makes the team and plays 3rd/4th line minutes and is on the 2nd PK unit. The only way I see him going to CT is to get top line minutes and PP time. Will be interesting how Torts views him and chooses to develop him.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jul 22, 2011 8:43 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

get top line minutes and PP time.

And that’s the reason why I think he should start in Hartford.

Besides, the second penalty kill unit will be some combination of Boyle with Prust or Fedotenko. It wouldn’t make sense to put a rookie in that spot when there are players who have already excelled in that role.

by Hoggo on Jul 22, 2011 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

If you watched him play and read scouting reports on him, you would know why he won’t need time in CT. Its not my job to educate you on this topic, so google Carl Hagelin and then come back with a more informed opinion and we have an adult discussion on the subject.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jul 22, 2011 10:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Have an adult conversation? Educate me?

So what you’re saying is that because of scouting reports, which I have read, and Google you’ve determined that Hagelin would be a better fit on the penalty kill than Boyle-Prust who were relied upon as the second kill unit behind Dubinsky-Callahan.

You’re also saying that having a rookie get top line minutes and power play time in a professional league, having played only 5 games previously would be a waste of his time?

I’m basing my opinion on facts. You’re basing yours on, what exactly?

Not the first time I have heard the comparison.

Hagelin is without a doubt a better skater of the two.

by The Blue Seats on Jul 22, 2011 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow. He was drafted pretty late. Didn’t realize he was a 7th rounder.

Was that due to worries about his commitment to North America?

Pierre McGuire needs to go away.

by MartyEqualsPansy on Jul 22, 2011 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

I believe

that is the exact reason. He was the #1 overall pick in the KHL draft, and teams didn’t know if he would come over

If he doesn’t make the club he’s going to make 65K + some bonus money playing in CT. Why pass up the money in KHL? Even if he signs for 1 year it would be for much more money.

Happy he’s here now.

i love having this problem of too many young defensemen with good/great potential

by SaveByRicther on Jul 22, 2011 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

To be honest, would rather be bloated with high end offensive prospects since he have solid D now and Hank in the pipes.

But, these guys are valuable chips to us or other teams as trade bait.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jul 22, 2011 3:41 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I could see Sauer being traded...

If Erixon rounds into form the way they think he will then our top 4 would then be Staal Girardi McD and Erixon. Rounding out the 3rd pair would be Eminger, MDZ, Valentenko, and McIlrath if he proves he’s ready. Sauer is the one who becomes expendable. But I like Sauer’s grit, A LOT!!! Sometimes he was the only guy clearing the front of Hank, and sticking up for his teammates. I’d be sad to see him go, but he may wind up being the odd man out, especially if Valentenko can’t garner the trade value quickly. Sauer has decent trade value now as a top-4 D man. And he has had injury problems, so Sather might just pull the trigger.

'Cause Brawndo's got electrolyes....

by Tim-May on Jul 22, 2011 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

If these young guys progress, Girardi will be odd man out next year via trade. His salary cap hit would be better spent on top six wing either by trade or UFA. If Sauer does nothing more than repeat last years performance, I’d be happier than a pig in shit..or a priest at junior high school wrestling match.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jul 22, 2011 3:58 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I don’t recall Sauer missing any time last year with an injury, certainly nothing serious. He is hardly injury prone.

1 solid rookie season makes him the odd man out? can’t see that.

Lets dtop overvalueing “prospects” until they actually do something tangible

by GAThingy on Jul 22, 2011 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

he was injury prone before last year – that’s why he never got a real shot before last year, and was not viewed as one of our top prospects.

by j-red on Jul 22, 2011 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

yea regardless of his history

He played his way onto this team. He wasn’t just good he was solid, and has a great defensive game. I can’t see the rangers trading saur when his contract is cheap and he’s young. Girardi would have to be the odd man out if a trade was brewing, his value is the highest its ever been and probably ever will be. If we were to make a trade it would be due to a log jam and to shed salary. But regardless I personally don’t think many more moves will come via trade but if it were I think girardi would be a target rather saur.

by SeanI on Jul 22, 2011 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

We have an embarrassment of riches here in the young talent department. If most of these guys CAN wait until next year, they should. Feds and MZA may be good for us this year but outperformed by one of these guys next year and figure at that point Avery and Wolski are gone and Eminger may no longer be needed… plus a possible Girardi trade….

by BigB22 on Jul 22, 2011 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

Great news, looking forward to seeing him in preseason. At this point I wouldn’t mind seeing one defenseman sent to another team, but don’t forget how great abundances are.

There’s no problem having seven+ capable players for six spots. It’s great.

well i guess

this is a great problem to have….a ton a great potential stud D men, and offensive prospects also with great potential that will already give our vets a run for their money….it will create great competition and hopefully everyone will give it there all to fight for their jobs. The future is bright my friends.

CSKA fans unhappy with the game Pashnin. He had a lot of bad penalty. In CSKA he is not progressing.

thanks for the information!

I was under the impression that he did not have a good prospect development camp, and that he was ‘just trying to hit stuff’ but no playing all that well.
This kid is a long shot to make the team, in my opinion, so I’m interested to see what he feels about playing in the AHL.

PLAN AHEAD

Wow, all of a sudden the Rangers are a*#hole deep in d-men!!! What a change from years past!
This as all well and good, but the ultimate dream would be another Leetch type guy, one that can bring offense, defense, leadership, and enthusiasm to the team. I’m not one for stats, as I’ve posted before, so I tend to go with my gut. I feel that, among all the up and comers (not including Staahl and Girardi) the one that shows me the POTENTIAL to be the best of the bunch is Del Zotto. It’s too early to comment on his leadership (or perhaps lack of) qualities, but there’s no doubt he has the raw talent and the mental makeup to be a great offensive, as well as a defensive d-man. We could sure use that!!!
This is only my opinion, in NO way provable, but that’s the impression and feeling I get while watching him. It would be a shame,IMH, not to hang on to him for a couple of years to give him time (and that means PLAYING time) to develop.
