New York Rangers News and Notes: Around The NHL
- The Vinny Prospall era has ended today in New York, as the forward signed a one-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He will be making a total of $1.75 million, far to much for the Rangers to bring him back for another year. Best of luck to Vinny in Columbus, he'll have fun with Nash and Carter on the first line.[TSN]
- News surfaced yesterday that Derek Boogaard's brother (Aaron) was arrested and charged for Derek's death. Aaron was found providing Derek with unprescribed narcotic pain pills of oxycodone. He was also found flushing the evidence of the pills down the toilet before authorities arrived at Derek's apartment. He was charged with both distribution of a controlled substance and interfering with the scene of a death. [NY Post]
- Many of you have heard about the recent terrorist attacks in Norway this past Friday. New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello was present in Norway at the time the attacks happened. However, he has checked in with multiple people to indicate him and his family are doing fine, just a little shaken up. [Ranger Rants]
- Brandon Dubinsky was featured in a video earlier today discussing his new contract. He stated that he knew the deal would come at some point. They even had their 9:00 AM arbitration hearing pushed back to complete the deal. Dubinsky states that New York is the only place he wants to play and glad a deal was in place to keep him here. [Blueshirts United]
- The Winnipeg Jets officially unveiled their new logos for the 2011-2012 season late Friday afternoon. The logo has some history to it, but has been completely modernized. To view the logo, check out the official Winnipeg Jets website. [Winnipeg Jets]
- Across the waters, our rivals, the New York Islanders have apparently been in talks to bring forward Alexei Yashin back to the Island. There was concerns a new contract would violate the current CBA. Bill Daly confirmed that it would not violate it, but might risk a cap circumvention. The Islanders are still currently paying Yashin for buying him out four years back. [TSN]
- The legendary Mike "Doc" Emrick has stepped down from the Devils broadcast booth to join NBC and Versus. Emrick spent 21 years with the New Jersey Devils, and served 23 years with MSG Networks. [NJ Devils]
That's about it for now, use this as your open thread for the day. Hopefully more to update soon. Discuss away!

Random coincidence?
So I’m on vacation this week on Long Beach Island, but I’m checking in here for all the latest on the Callahan talks. As I get about 4 blocks from the house I’m staying at, I pass by a bar…named Callahan’s. I’m hoping that’s just good karma.
Sad to see tan man go – no one could celebrate a goal like him.
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
Callahns is OK
But hit Boulevard Clams.

Boogaard’s brother being charged is vile beyond words. Aaron did something he shouldn’t have but to seek a criminal charge appears to be a DA trying to make a point. Instead of the point being a prosecutor who’s tough on drugs, it comes off like a guy reinforcing the notion that he’s a dick.

I don’t see it that way, you kind of have to press some sort of charges. If the DA wanted to be a dick, he would have sought wrongful death/manslaughter charges, rather than the minimum applicable charge that doesn’t carry jail time (unless he has a record already).
he would have sought wrongful death/manslaughter charges
Not an option. He admitted to giving his brother one pill and the cause of death as a mix of oxy, vicodin and alcohol – the second two were “self-inflicted”

Agreed. Were there laws broken? Allegedly, yes. If laws were broken, is the DA entitled to bring charges against the brother? Absolutely. But unless Aaron is allegedly involved as a “pusher” who ostensibly distributes drugs to other people as well, I don’t know that justice — or We the People — would be served by arresting and trying the guy.
If what happened is as alleged—I’m not claiming any knowledge of guilt or innocence here—Aaron played a role in his beloved brother’s demise and helped bring the worst pain a parent can know to his mom and dad (as well as the agony brought to his siblings). Every day, whether he’s a free man or in a jail cell somewhere, the knowledge of this responsibility and guilt will remain. It’s a life sentence, and I don’t know (and I don’t want to know) how a person lives with him-/herself after something like that.
I’m not just saying this because I’m a Rangers, or hockey fan. I feel horrible when I hear about parents making mistakes (or their children show a little too much initiative), and then on top of the tragedy of losing a beloved son or daughter (be it through their actions or inactions), they are being charged with a crime, too. I don’t know that the movie Stargate could be filmed nowadays because Col. Jack O’Neil would probably have been arrested and jailed following his son’s demise.

a story I read made it seem like they were trying to use Aaron to go up the chain and bust up sources of this non-prescribed controlled substance
Oh, okay. Thanks, SeanI! That certainly puts a different slant on this sad story. If they’re trying to get to the source, but Aaron has been refusing to cooperate so far, then this would appear to force TPTB’s hand on this. If the suppliers can be taken off the streets, then something good will have come from a horrible, horrible tragedy.
Couldn’t have said it better.

but to seek a criminal charge appears to be a DA trying to make a point.
That’s what it is though… if they didn’t pursue an indictment against Boogaard, then the issue would be about a celebrity’s family getting special treatment.
Two sides to that coin. It’s a tragedy, and it sucks. No one knows details at this point, but fact is the law is the law. If Aaron Boogaard did, in fact, break the law, and that crime led to his brother’s death, then he should be charged.
Case in point, the charges against Michael Jackson’s doctor. There is criminal negligence in being an enabler.
I’d agree there is criminal negligence, but the case you site is not a good example. Jackson’s meds needed to be administered and propofol requires constant medical supervision.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

why would the islanders...
Get rid of there player just to try and sign them back a few years later? Is this one of the reasons the islanders are a bottom team?

Why Yashin?
He’s not a guy in my mind to mentor younger players. There was nobody else in free agency or trade that Snow was serious about getting? I just don’t get it.

I don’t think Stillman is going to put up 40 points. I’m not even that confident he can post a point every two games, let alone stay healthy.

Stillman got 50 points last season, did he not, and many (more than point per game) once he was traded back to Carolina…
37 in 65 games. He hit 65 four years ago, when he was 34.

and..
How in gods name does that play on there cap. Since they were already still paying him while he has been off the team…now if they resign him what happens..they pay the remainder of those years plus the new contract ?
by XxC17xX on Jul 24, 2011 11:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Yup. They pay both.

Palffy’s probably a better option. Dude led his league in scoring w/ 99 points in 53 games in Slovakia.
