Rangers Analysis: Dubinsky Won't Struggle With Added Pressure

Photo

"There's a lot of weight that comes with the contract I just signed,  and a lot of expectations that come with it," said Dubinsky. "But I think I am ready to take that step and make sure that I play up to those expectations."

Brandon Dubinsky has been around long enough to know that hefty contracts come with hefty pressure when playing in the city of New York. The 25-year-old's recent 4-year, $16.8 million contract will certainly bring upon expectations that he's never experienced at the NHL level before, but Brandon's persona suggests that he will not fold under the added pressure. Instead, he sees this as an opportunity to improve and take bigger strides than he has in the past.

Each season Dubinsky has improved his game in some way, and last year I think we saw improvements in more than just one way. Everything clicked for Dubi and he never really hit the rough patch that we were so accustomed to seeing him hit in years past. The difference between last season and the ones prior was that Dubinsky emerged as an individual. He was no longer just a set-up man or there for the benefit of someone else like when he played with Jaromir Jagr several years ago. Last season he was there for Brandon Dubinsky, and he took hold of that concept and ran with it.

Star-divide

Dubinsky is no longer being compared to other players in the league. Instead, others players in the league are being compared to him. His work ethic, his hands, his leadership; it all blends to form a very well-rounded player, and those don't grow on trees these days. That's why he was valued so high and why he is being paid $4.2 million a year to remain a New York Ranger.

Sadly, though, cap numbers have a much more significant meaning to the fans now. All past accomplishments and merits are thrown out the window once you sign a new contract (see Chris Drury). The fans expect more out of a player when they have an expensive price tag attached to them. Dubinsky will experience this and he knows that. He will be expected to help lead the team, not only in the locker room and on the bench, but on the scoresheet as well. If he doesn't live up to those expectations, the Garden and media will let him know it. That's just how it is.

But there's something about Brandon that tells me he won't run into the same problems as former teammates Wade Redden, Scott Gomez and Chris Drury all did under the Broadway lights. He puts expectations on himself and believes in himself. Trust me, there are no confidence issues when it comes to Dubi. He will take the added pressure and swallow it whole. He will use it to his advantage and as a motivational factor. Dubinsky is not going to fall into the never-ending ditch of overpayment. He'll prove he deserves that $4.2 million per year, and he'll be worth every penny of it.

You can mark my words.

i agree with your take on dubinsky but..

I think you have it backwards with the others. Gomez reddden and drury ( ok ill give it to you for drury haha) didn’t really crumble under the pressure. They pllayed as good as could be expected when looking at their most recent seasons. Gomer pocketed over 70 pts that first year, just like career average said. Redden had been on the downturn for over 2 seasons. Drury deteriorated way too quick but even his first season was ok. Players don’t magically get betterbecause you pay them more. The difference with dubi? His contract actually fits his production :)

All he needs to do is be himself.

He’s being paid to produce 50 points (±7) and play with grit and passion. That’s in his DNA and he’s never wavered from that since getting into the NHL. I’m not worried at all. His game is not reliant on other people, he makes plays for himself and others with speed and power.

Brandon Dubinsky is the best 50 point player in the league and we’ll be saying the same thing next summer.

Comparing Dubi’s Contract to Drury, Gomez, or Redden isn’t fair.

Drury 30 years old 5 yr. 35 mil
Redden 31 years old 6 yr. 39 mil
Gomez 28 years old 7 yr. 51.5 mil

Dubinsky 25 years old 4 years 16.8 mil

Dubinsky is still growing. He’ll have more opportunity this year then ever. On the top line he’ll be playing with a pair of elite players. On the Pack line he’ll face easier competition as the top line will get the attention of the top defensive pairings. A win for Dubi either way. The way Torts changes lines it’ll be both.

Dubi will earn his paycheck.

Do big money players really wilt

Under the bright lights of MSG or is it that the players are overvalued in the first place?

As nhl21 mentioned earlier, some of the larger FA signings in recent years have produced to the level that their career averages suggested they would produce but then started to decline as many players that have hit UFA and the aging curve suggest they would as well.

And as much as we like the think that MSG is one of the grandest stages in all of sports, I wouldn’t say that it’s the toughest market to play in the NHL. Both Jagr and Naslund have remarked that they’ve noticed that the Rangers are much further down the pecking order in the NY sports scene than the perception would lead you to believe. This is not to say the Rangers are not supported well by legions of die hard fans, but I’d be willing to bet that the pressure of being a star player weighs more heavily in other major cities like Montreal and Toronto or smaller cities like Vancouver where the primary focus of the sporting culture is on the hockey club and not split between the other 3 major sports.

If Dubi does player well and earn his deal, I think it will have more to do that he’s a player that’s still improving rather than one that’s already reached his peak or will start to decline before his deal comes to an end.

When Dubi first came up

Someone said that he reminded them of Adam Graves. At first I didn’t really see it, but he has really proved me wrong. Give the man the letter he deserved and let the team get better under him.

a few things...

Gabby agreed as almost always but hopefully next year its more points. Squadron you’re right that the blueshirts are not on the pedestal of new York sports but msg has a huge equalizer on that when it comes to capacity… giant stadium in New Jersey holds close to or over 100,000 same with Yankee stadium the Garden only holds about 18,000 of take take no shit nasty fans, hate to admit but its true. And blue seats all I have to say to you is thank you…
